good morning everyone it's monday, march 11th. i'm mow my along alex witt and louis burgdorf. president trump has done it again. reportedly telling a gathering of republican donors on friday night that quote democrats hate jewish people. something that stands in contrast to how jewish-americans vote and their broad representation in the democratic party compared to republicans. three sources who were there but were prevented by security from recording tell axes on made the comments while the recent anti-semitism controversy over ilhan omar. he didn't understand how any jew could vote for a democrat these days. trump talked about how much he liked benjamin netanyahu. if he could run as prime minister he would be 80% in the

polls. now this follows the president's attempt to brand all democrats against the jewish people due to the controversy around the minnesota freshman. >> the democrats have become an anti-israel party, they've become an anti-jewish party. that's too bad. >> data shows something else, though. jewish voters have swung even more to the democratic party in recent elections. exit polls in the trump era shows in 2016 jewish voters favored hillary clinton over donald trump by 71% to 24%. trump performing eight points worse than mitt romney and democrats did better in 2018 after the accomplishments donald trump touted to donors winning 79 puerto rico of the vote to republicans 17%. >> there's another aspect here. the trump campaign is confirming more from the axios report. axios reports trump described opening his curtain one day to look at secret service agents

swarming the white house lawn. he said he saw agents wearing night vision goggles. they are in blackface he added jokingly referring to the masks over the agent's faces. he said they were in blackface because of masks so maybe they have to take them away. the sources assumed trump was referring to the controversy of the blackface photo of virginia's governor. last night on kacie dc he said it was a joke. >> he was joking these tactical gear and masks worn by the secret service are black and given the recent comment and controversies maybe they would have to change that. again it's a joke. your reporting indicated people laughed and saw what it was. this is the context. this is the president holding court so to speak with close advisors, friends, long time

mar-a-lago guests and republican donors. he's telling stories. recounting various things. this is not prepared remarks. >> president trump and michael cohen are calling each other liars in an argument over a presidential pardon. on friday trump accused cohen of lying during his recent congressional testimony claiming his former fixer directly asked him for a pardon. >> michael cohen lied about the pardon. it's a cold stone lie. he lied about a lot of things. when he lied about the pardon that was really a lie. he knew all about pardons. his lawyer said he went to my lawyers and asked for a pardon. i could go a step above that but i won't do it now. >> the president tweeted bad lawyer and fraudster michael cohen under sworn testimony he never asked for a pardon. his lawyers total contradicted him. he lied. additionally he directly asked me for a pardon. i said no. he lied again. he also badly wanted to work at the white house.

he lied. now michael cohen hit back on twitter about 30 minutes later writing in part quote, just another set of lies by president donald trump. president trump's lawyer rudy giuliani also weighed in telling the associated press on. friday he remembered trump telling him when he joined the president's legal team 11 months ago that cohen had asked for a pardon. now the ap point out this is something giuliani had never previously revealed including in an interview about pardons the previous day. >> nothing like a twitter feed between the powerful man in the world and his lawyer. joining us now david drucker. great to have you with us on this monday morning. let's talk about where we stan between these two men right now. it's pretty much a he had said/he said. anyway the president or michael cohen could actually move this beyond these just kind of twitter accusations and to something more substantial with evidence that supports either

one of their claims. >> why would they want to do that because we're all having so much fun. look, everybody knows that the president bends the truth when he wants to and doesn't really care about it. in a way it's worked for him. nobody actually expects him to tell the truth. people who support him like him in part because he doesn't always tell the truth, particularly when he's on the attack against his opponents. michael cohen is just a liar. he's lied for a living. he continues to tell lies. but one of the thing that he might be able to do that moves the ball forward in terms of investigating the president is provide evidence and facts so that even if he continues to either misremember things or lie and i'm talking here about whether or not he ever asked for a pardon or not and by saying that he didn't in front of congress and now being called on this, it's possible he's going to have another issue. but the evidence that he's providing to congress could be

grist for democratic investigations and democrats could end up in their investigating in the house find things on the president that we're not even talking about and that's why i think we need to differentiate between what michael cohen is saying and the evidence that he's providing. >> can i ask you, david, you heard mark lauder, he was confirming the blackface joke at mar-a-lago. the fact is even his own advisers suggesting donald trump would be better served in the campaign if he were not to do these free wheeling campaign style speeches that he does at these rallies and put himself in a more dignified setting. that might kind of do away with these kind of jokes and uncomfortable nature of that as they become absolute controversies. what are your thoughts on that? >> i all felt the president has so much credibility with his base and the expectations are solo, which is actually what you want in politics that if the president were ever to decide

that he was going to act more conventionally most of the time he would be able to keep all of the voters he has and he might have really good opportunity to expand his base of support and reach voters. that like a lot of his policies, but simply cannot accept the way he behaves. the president doesn't like that. i don't think that he believes that. the president, i think, believes that if he were to act conventionally and to act like a normal politician it simply wouldn't work for him. so i don't expect any of this to change. this is what the president enjoys so much. one of the reasons he's running for re-election. he won't pass up an opportunity to go on tour again in 2020. >> we see him with the prompter. it's not the same president. everything is different. david drucker thank you very much. we'll talk to you again in just a little bit. we're learning more details this morning about the so-called second trump tower meeting

during 2016 campaign. this one also involving donald trump jr. other participants for that august 3rd, 2016 meeting including a israeli social media essentiallyist, republican donor with controversial ties to the middle east and emissary who led the saudi arabia and united arab emirates. last year the "new york times" reported that george nader said that included saudi arabia's crown prince mbs they were eager to help donald trump win the election. the paper reported another participant was erik prince who arranged that meeting. in an interview last friday prince admitted to participating in that trump tower meeting, however before the house intelligence committee in 2017 prince failed to mention that he was actually involved saying he had no formal communication with

public relation services to assist businesses in america to establish and expand their brand image in the modern chinese marketplace. the company notes that its services also address clients looking to make high level connections in the u.s. one page of the website displays a photo of mar-a-lago and claims activities for clients have included providing them an opportunity to meet with the president and other political figures. the company boasts that it has arranged taking photos with the president and suggests it can set up a white house and capitol hill dinner. yang first came into the news last week when "the miami herald" reported she attended a super bowl party where she took a photo with the president. the same day "miami herald" broke that story the website for yang's consulting firm stopped working. last wednesday at a moment during an advisory board meeting at the white house that was caught on camera, president trump called apple ceo tim cook

an ethiopian airline flight heading to nairobi crashed shortly after takeoff claiming lives of all 157 passengers. among the passengers, eight americans. the crash comes months after a very same make and model jet crash in indonesia that happened last october. >> reporter: a devastating scene, the aircraft ripped apart. 'ses of the plane on a crash site the size of a football field. the point of impact, a huge crater. bodies and belongings strewn along the ethiopian country side. napkins from the airline. grief-stricken families are mourning the victims. radar shows flight et 302 lost contact just six minutes after takeoff at 8:44:00 a.m. local

time. crashing about 30 miles from the airport. the cause still unclear though data from flight radar 24 showed the vertical speed whether the plane was climbing or descending was unstable after takeoff. >> it's one of the safest airlines in the world. at this state we can't rule out anything. >> reporter: the boeing 737 max 8 is the same model involved in the indonesian lion jet crash in october which also went down shortly after takeoff from jakarta killing 189 people. boeing said they are sending a team to work with authorities. in nairobi this passenger was lucky to be alive after missing the flight. relatives from around the world wait for news including one

father said to have lost his wife and two children. just heartbreaking. our thanks for that report. a federal judge on friday ruled that the trump administration is responsible for the separation of migrant children from their parents before the administration began its zero tolerance policy. the plaintiffs represented by the aclu argue the children taken as early as july of 2017 should be included in a class action lawsuit joining children under the current policy so they could be reunified with their parents. government authorities said it would be overly burdensome since many children left government care. however the judge said in a ruling that was actually not such enreason to deny the trump administration's responsibility for those children. but stopped short of ordering the justice department to reunite them with their families. the ruling follows a report from a government watchdog that the

welcome back, everyone. i'm alex witt alongside ayman mohyeldin and louis burgdorf. it's the bottom of the hour. we'll start you off with the morning's top stories. the president is set to revive the fight over funding for his border wall. an official tells nbc news that the president will ask congress for $8.6 billion more to pay for the wall along the southern border. they will make the demand as part of its 2020 budget request. the new funding figure is more than six times what congress has set aside for border projects in each of the past two years. it's also more than the combined 8.1 billion trump got by

declaring a national emergency. in a joint statement chuck schumer and nancy pelosi say in part that president trump hurt millions of americans and caused widespread chaos when he recklessly shut down the government to get his expensive and ineffective wall. congress refused to fund his wall and he was forced to admit defeat and re-open the government. the same thing will repeat itself if he tries this again. speaking on friday pelosi dismissed the merits of trump's border wall. >> we're talking about funding a campai campaign, a pause line. there was nothing serious scientific evidence-based that a wall is what was going to be the best way to secure our borders. >> trump administration is facing yet another shakeup following the surprise announcement that bill shine is resigning as white house communications director. the administration announced the move friday saying shine will become a senior adviser on the president's re-election

campaign. no replacemen has been named as of yet. the former fox news executive joined the administration just last summer and was the fifth communications director in just over two years. according to politico shine's sudden exit came as a surprise to several white house aides along with officials working on the president's campaign. some of whom learned of his addition to the team on thursday. politico adds the campaign has been building the communication team over the last month and people close to the operation says it is unclear what shine's new role would be. "the washington post" adds that shine told white house advisors on friday that he was resigning because he was proving too much of a distraction to the president and that he was lonely in washington with his family living in new york and charleston, south carolina. but the "post" he recent lie moved into a nicer apartment in washington and had, in fact, embraced some of the city's social scene. this comes days after an

naivete. when we think about the greatest things we ever accomplished as a society have been ambitious acts of vision. and the meh is worshipped now for what? >> beto o'rourke made a surprise appearance at south by southwest. he appeared at the premier avenue documentary about his failed senate run, "running for beto" happened on saturday. he received a stand ovation before a q and a after the film. o'rourke's appearance comes ten days after he rolled out another senate run but said he hasn't made a decision about his political future. he didn't hint on saturday if or when he would announce a potential 2020 run. former vice president joe biden is concerned that his potential 2020 run could be facing a fundraising road block. the associated press reports

those close to biden have told him they believe he'll be at a fundraising disadvantage compared to his rivals who have received a quote flood of early small dollar donation. biden may be forced to rely on wealthy individual donors to fund his run according to a person with direct knowledge of his thinking. democrats in crucial primary states warned the former vice president that he is becoming difficult to persuade hold outs or rather is difficult to persuade hold outs to be patient as the vice president decides whether or not he's going to run. according to a new "des moines register" poll biden ladies the pack of 2020 contenders. 20% of iowa democrats say biden is their first choice for president with vermont senator bernie sanders following with a close second. if biden decides not to run, 30% of those who knows him as their first choice said they would actually back sanders instead. joining us once again senior

political correspondent for the "washington examiner" david drucker. so, david, from a financial perspective do you think biden taking a while to announce whether or not he'll get in the race does that end up backfiring him? you got a lot of money right now going to bernie sanders. kamala harris has done well. elizabeth warren has done well. is this a problem for him? >> look i think for somebody like vice president biden it's not a problem. if you're unknown and you need to lay out an infrastructure and you want to hire staff before they go elsewhere, it's a little bit more of an issue. you want to get started earlier because you need the extra time. vice president bid endoes not need the extra time. he can't wait forever. he shouldn't wait too long. but he's a known quantity. he has an image. i think if he gets in and runs a good campaign he'll be just fine. doesn't mean he'll necessarily win but these logistical concerns. if he doesn't have it in hand now given his history in

politics and how well-known he is in the party, he'll never get it done. look with small donors the thing about federal fundraising limits somebody who gives $20 to kamala harris and $3 to bernie sanders or flip that around they still have another $20 apiece for ten other candidate before they get federal limits. they are in good shape. >> let me get your thoughts on this new "des moines register" poll that shows bernie sanders 25%, joe biden at 27% ahead of sanders by two. these two men are drastically different in their styles, their approaches, their ideologies. how do you explain they are both front-runners and so far ahead of everyone else in the 2020 field? >> they are the most well-known. early polls like this are great snapshots because they let you see where the field is. but they are not necessarily an indication of where the field is headed. that's why we have campaigns. i think it's human nature. i do this for a living.

still, the reaction, the human reaction will be to look at a poll and think it can't change. it will never change. i guess this is the way things are. you run a campaign over the course of a year. these things can and will change. immediately when people make these choices they vote for people they know. in a poll that's how they respond because they won't respond in support of somebody they haven't figured out yet. an aggressive campaign with so many people involved and you'll see changes. we saw this in 2016 with the republicans when they had a crowded field. scott walker was ahead in iowa on the republican side for six months until he was overtaken by donald trump. eventually ted cruz won the iowa caucus. so these things will evolve. >> 2016 has taught us one thing don't rely on the polls solely. david drucker thank you so much. still ahead, senator elizabeth warren looks to take on big tech. >> the steps the presidential hopeful is causing to break up

welcome back. the collapse of the hanoi summit is having major effects on another deal the trump administration is attempting to negotiate. that's the president's proposed trade deal with china. president trump and the administration have inned about an upcoming summit for later on this month at mar-a-lago with chinese president xi jinping where the two leaders could be expected to sign some sort of a trade deal.

however a senior administration official tells cnbc there is a concern amongst the chinese that trump could just walk away from the table at the last minute just as he did in hanoi with north korea's kim jong-un. that official adds you don't want to send xi to mar-a-lago and have trump walk away. that would be a diplomatic catastrophe. to ensure that doesn't happen says representatives from both sides are conducting line by line negotiations. diplomatic sources tell nbc news trump has walked away from smaller trade deals with china though those were negotiated with commerce secretary wilbur ross and separately steven mnuchkin. xi doesn't want to be embarrassed by flying to florida just to have trump walk away. >> jerome powell continues to directly commenting on the criticism he's received from president trump but in an kpru with "60 minutes" he reasserted the central bank's independence.

us? >> biden decision imminent. we talked to a number of people in biden world who say that within days it will be apparent whether or not he's made what they call the final-final decision to go ahead with a presidential campaign. we've heard the vice president telling people there's a 95% chance he'll do that. one insider told me he's even used a higher number with some people, but the true tell, how we're going to know even before an announcement, if he's decided to go ahead for sure, he'll start pressing both people who might work for him and key supporters to make a firm commitment. that's how we'll know and that will be the prelude to a formal announcement sometime between now and the first week of april. >> mike, do you know what it is that he's been considering that's taken so long and once he does get in if he gets in, does he immediately hit the ground running and launch to the top? >> the answer to b is yes.
