wednesday, april 3rd. i'm ayman mohyeldin alongside yasmin vossoughian. we begin with security concerns at president trump's mar-a-lago resort after a chinese woman was found on the property saturday with a thumb drive containing malware. according to court documents, mar-a-lago authorities were unable to verify that zhang was on an access list. now, once inside, officials say zhang told a secret service agent she was going to the swimming pool and handed over two chinese passports as i.d. after several interviews, the criminal complaint says her belongings were concerned turning up four cell phones, a laptop, an external hard drive and a thumb drive.

>> the miami herald reports that cindy yang event, trump was in florida at the time of the breach, golfing at a different property, trump international. he returned to mar-a-lago hours later. however, the first lady and other members of the trump family were at mar-a-lago when the incident did occur. the secrets is is telling "the washington post" the service does not determine who is invited or william at mar-a-lago, this is the responsibility of the host entity. the club's management determines which members and guests are granted access to the property. this access does not afford an individual proximity to the president or other secret service protectees. north korea launched a missile test while president trump was hosting the president at mar-a-lago. and the president was discussing

strategies as club members stood by watching and snapping these pictures. today, a house commission is likely to issue a subpoena to get robert mueller's full report from the justice department. jerry nabler way want a few more days. while claiming that mueller had, quote, totally exonerated him. a senior administration official told new york magazine that while white house staffers many want to put this behind him for fear that trump was oversold his exoneration. they reportedly asked for the investigators to be investigated. >> we went through two years of the mueller investigation. not only that, you read the word, it was proven.

who could go through that and get wording where there was no collusion. no nothing. this thing has gone on for two years. and really, it started long before that. it practically started from the time i came down the escalator, because this was a whole plot. i hope they now go and take a look at the oranges, the oranges of the investigation. the beginnings of that investigation. >> president trump and senate leader mitch mcconnell appear to be at odds over the closing of the board. president trump said he's 100% prepared to shut down the border at mexico. at the same time warning the it could be a financial disaster. >> if we don't make a deal with congress, the border is going to be closed 100%. >> do you worry about the impact on the u.s. economy by closing the border. >> sure.

it's going to have a negative impact on the economy. it's one of the biggest trade deals in the world that we've just gone with the usnca. it's a very big trading partner. but to me, trading is very important. the borders are very important but security is most important. >> well, we certainly have a crisis at the border. i think the president is right about that. closing down the border would have potentially catastrophic economic impact on our country. and i would hope we would not be doing that sort of thing. >> meanwhile, a chief economist at moody's analytics is warning that quote, a full shutdown of the u.s./mexico border in the next few weeks would be the fodder for recession for both mexico and the united states. according to associated press, trump officials are exploring half measures that might satisfy the president's urge for action like stopping only foot traffic at two more crossing. and two more women have come forward of accusing former vice

president joe biden of touching them and making them feel uncomfortable. caitlin caruso, a former college student and sexual assault survive accused him of resting his hand on her thigh and hugged her just a little bit too long. this happened at the university of nevada. another woman claims while she and her husband stood up to take a photo with biden, biden put his band on her back. axios reports that believe advisers to bernie sanders are at least behind the anti-biden campaign. one backer says biden will run and biden is ready to kill bernie. the house speaker was also asked

to weigh in. >> these women feel this is not okay. i imagine this is a conversation he'll be having with the american people. >> i believe them and i respect them being able to tell their story. i encourage them to do it. >> do you believe that the vice president should enter the race? >> oh, he's going to have to make that decision for himself. i wouldn't tell him what to do. >> is it disqualifying and what is your reaction to that? >> i don't think it's disqualifying, i think it's disqualifying what the intention is. he has to understand we're in a world that now people's space is important to them. and what's important is how they receive it, not necessarily how you intended. >> and president trump took a swipe at biden during a fund-raiser for congressional candidates. here he after retelling a little

joke about receiving military advice. >> i said, general, give me a kiss. i felt like joe biden. but i meant it. see, i meant it, big difference. >> our former vice president, he's -- i was going to call him. i don't know him well. i was going to say welcome to the world, joe. you having a good time, joe? have you having a good time? >> okay. so late last night the presidential campaign of senator bernie sanders strongly denied having anything to do with the allegations against joe biden. the daly beast quoted a top democrat source that the suspicion within the biden universe of stories of women made uncomfortable by the former vp were all, quote, coming out of bernie world. the sanders campaign manager faiz shaki said neither the

bernie sanders campaign or anyone involved planned or persuaded and we didn't play a role. shakir went on that it's shameful to suggest that a political agenda is behind these statements. and 2020 democratic senator bernie sanders has raised $18 million in the first weeks of his bid. sanders has received 950,000 contributions with the average donation being $20. that is down from $27 during sanders' 2016 run. meanwhile fellow senator kamala harris has raised $12 million. and south bend indiana mayor pete buttigieg raised $20 million. however, those fund raising totals are significantly left than what barack obama and

hillary clinton raised. joining us now a national political reporter for associated press. wanda sanders. >> nice to have you. >> thank you. >> let's talk about some of these fund raising numbers that ayman was just talking about. do you think some of these candidates should be concerned that they haven't hit the measures of barack obama, they haven't hit the numbers of hillary clinton back in 2007. or is that because of the fact that the field is so much smaller now than it was then? we have so many more people running for president than 2007. >> sure. one of the things is the size of the field. the name of the game has changed so much on the left. a lot of these democratic activists don't want to see big donors. of course, they're still courting them to have the fund-raisers, but they're showing they have that grassroots support.

i think why we see folks like bernie sanders emphasizing the number. and you see someone like kamala harris from california saying she's received a slew of high dollar donors. she and many other candidates have been hosting from coast to coast. i think the calculus has changed a lot from the candidates but the fact of the matter is they're going to need a significant haul of money, particularly the way the calendar is to particularly compete in iowa, new hampshire, nevada early. >> they're going to have to get really big donors to stay in the race and be a strong contender. >> for sure. >> let me switch and get your thoughts on joe biden, all of this that has happened with these women coming forward. obviously, the implication that may be the bernie sanders campaign that may been behind these women coming forward with

the stories. how much of this is going to affect joe biden's decision to run. and how much has it changed the dynamics of the race? >> well, aides to joe biden spoke on anonymity to us says this hasn't changed the calculus. we've seen this week statements of women who have worked alongside defending the vice president's actions. i do think it's changes the calculus. it goes to what we saw, donald trump taking aim at vice president joe biden. people are raising questions as to whether or not he is the most credible person to take on trump in a head-to-head matchup where voters are looking for the candidate who cannot just galvanize democratic voters but win in a general election. >> should joe biden take a page from the way republicans deal with accusations in responding? either to deal with them or deal with them head on or move on?

when you look back especially to al franken, they really drew a line in the sand with regards to accusations made against democrats. and here with joe biden -- >> when moore was running and everybody was ready to throw him under the bus earlier. >> sure. i'm just wondering how the biden camp is going to respond to this? >> one of the things that hangs on this this in the level of roy mire or sexual misconduct. we're talking about this gray area where women are saying, he didn't assault them. he touched them in ways that he felt was personally invasive. we haven't heard from biden himself. i imagine while his democratic rivals haven't rushed and he'll feel a need to step out. >> they're not rushing to defend him but they're also not rushing to take him on like we heard from some of the women early on. juana summers, thank you.

welcome back, everybody. the florida man on trial for targeting president trump's critics with mailed explosives says he did not intend to hurt anybody. in a handwritten letter to the presiding judge, the 57-year-old apologized for his actions writing he intended to threaten, but not cause harm, in an attempt to clarify a statement he made. sayoc had told the court that he believed that the 16 crude bombs targeting barack obama, hillary clinton, cnn and others he built and mailed last october could have detonated. he now said he never expected

his device which is were packed with glass and fireworks powder to actually work. sayoc's sentence is sentenced for september. he faces life in prison. actresses felicity huffman and lori loughlin are expected to appear in a federal courtroom. both will take part in a preliminary hearing with other parents for their alleged role in that college admissions scheme. the parents are charged with conspiracy to commit fraud. they are not expected to enter pleas today. the justice department says the parents paid college admissions coach rick singer to help get their children in some of the nation's top universities with bribes, fake credentials and by rigging entrance exams. quite a historic win yesterday. lori lightfoot won a resounding victory to become the first afric african-american woman to be

elected mayor. she defeated toni preckwinkle sweep the chicago's ward and winning 74%. >> that is a landslide. >> incredible bid for her to say the least. lightfoot is set to be sworn in as chicago's 56th mayor on may 20th. a lithuanian man was boarding his flight to italy when he got a very pleasant surprise. he was the only passenger on the boeing 737. makes you feel like the whole plane was business class. according to the associated press, the man was traveling for a skiing holiday and had the hole plane which typically seats up to 188 passengers. the only other people on board were two crew members. only one-way tickets were sold. the man was the only person that bought a ticket. can you imagine if he would have

welcome back, everybody, i'm yasmin vossoughian alongside ayman mohyeldin. it's the bottom of the hour. let's start with the morning's top stories. house democrats are ramping up their is investigation into the white house's approval of the security clearances as the whistle-blower who raised a red flag about that process is now speaking out. the house oversight committee voted along party lines yesterday to authorize four subpoenas into the matter. that includes one for former white house personnel security director carl klein to testify before the panel about his role in approving clearances. in a statement, klein said in part he issued to appear before the committee voluntarily but the committee chose not to allow that. >> in a contentious hearing

yesterday, reporesentative cummings. >> the white house needs to understand they cannot stone wall and just offer general information about their policies, not when there's such mysterious allegations of a risk to national security. >> now, today, we're going to subpoena a guy who just finish sent us a letter saying he's willing to come here voluntarily. i've been on this committee ten years. i've never seen anything like this. >> oh, please. >> never seen anything like this. i haven't. >> yeah, you've done it. >> i haven't. >> this lady was scared. you hear me? she was scared. she's small in stature. and she's already seen what is going on in the white house. she was scared to death. >> all right. the woman that you just heard chairman cummings was trisha newbold. they is the whistle-blower who alerted congress about the at least 25 trump administration officials that received security

an american issue. and we as security professionals owe it to make all of our recommendations in the best interest of national security. >> it's america's national security at stake here, correct? >> absolutely. >> all right. president trump is backing off plans to introduce a replacement to the affordable care act after speaking with senate majority leader mitch mcconnell this week. mcconnell told reporters that he had a conversation with president trump on monday and told him the senate would not be taking up health care legislation before the 2020 election. >> a difference between you and the president on what he wants to do with health care and where you see the debate? >> not any longer. we had a good conversation yesterday afternoon. and i pointed out to him, the senate republicans' view on dealing with comprehensive health care reform. with a democratic house of representatives. i made it clear to him we were not going to be doing that and

the senate. >> but yesterday, president trump denied that mcconnell had to convince him to delay a new health care plan, watch this. >> did mitch mcconnell accomplish that? >> no, i wanted to delay it myself. because we don't have the house. even though health care is good and really good. it's much better than when the plan comes out that we'll be showing you at the appropriate time, it's much better than obamacare. so when the plan comes out, you'll see it. and president trump's criticism of puerto rico is born out of criticism he's received and what trump feels is mismanagement of the funds. the president tweeted yesterday morning, puerto rico got $91 billion for the hurricane, yet that figure reported by the president is far higher than what they reportedly received. trump also that the island politicians only take from u.s.

and yesterday, the press secretary defended the tweet by saying this. >> president says puerto ricans are taking from the usa. puerto rico is part of the united states. people who live until puerto rico are u.s. citizens. you're rolling your eyes. i don't know why you're rolling your eyes. there's a lot of confusion on why the president would say this? >> that's ridiculous. he's actually travelled to puerto rico after his horrific hurricane. he was there. >> and then talked a lot of bad things about puerto rico after he returned. >> he gave them a lot of them. they've mismanaged that money and hurts their people. >> and in that statement, he referred to puerto rico which is actually an american territory for more than 100 years as, quote, that country. match. >> always done in that country, a systematic mismanagement of goods and services we've sent to them. their governor has done a horrible job he's trying to make political hay in a political

year. and he's trying to find someone to take the blame off of him without having a grid and system in that country. >> i think you referred to puerto rico as that country. >> a territory, yes. >> yes. >> that was a mistake. 100%. >> joining us a national political reporter for the associated press, juana summers. let's talk about that country, puerto rico, for a moment. ramping up the rhetoric against puerto rico does not seem to be registering that this is a u.s. territory, that these are american citizens. it's mind-boggling. what is the way to explain it? what are people telling you about why they understand why this trepresident is having so h animosity? >> he doesn't want to give puerto rico any more money because he thinks he's protecting the puerto rico people because the leaders are mismanaging it. >> sure. when you look at it on the left

and in particularly puerto rico, people there are saying it's egregious that he's doing this to american citizens. many see it as criticism coming along racial lines from this president. on the right, though, there's also concern that we've been reporting. many republicans worry by continuing to ramp this up as we head into an election year, that president donald trump is possibly compromising his political portions. and in florida. and many puerto ricans have moved from the island to sentra florida. they're worried he may be worsening this fortunes there. alienating the general voters who may back him in the general election. >> we saw elijah cummings and jim jordan go head to head. and also wanting to come forward and testify with regards to the subpoenas and what exactly took

place there. we know, obviously, jared kushner, first daughter ivanka trump, their security clearances could be under recruit anscruti. if in fact house democrats continue to move forward with the investigations with regard to security clearances, what could feasibly happen to people like jared kushner who i know security clearance has been lowered. but still does have pretty high level security clearance. could he feasibly get his security clearance wiped out. >> revoked. >> revoked. >> certainly. there are a number of outcomes that could happen here. this is a sign how much more aggressive this investigation has become now that democrats do indeed have control of the house. this is something that chairman cummings was focused on and looking at. president trump is getting a wake-up as to what it looks like in this new era of divided where republicans do not have full control. and it's not sure just how far

this investigation mail go and what it may tell. >> there any reference as to other presidencies that have dealt with security clearances in the past, has there ever been a circumstance or situation similar to this, where you have a president who has had people within the white house, within their administration not get security clearances easily? >> where is presidential historian jon leachman. >> yeah, exactly, so, no? >> i don't know. but democrats are not going to let this go. and they've made that very clear looking that the very contentious hearing this week. >> and many issues as well that they don't plan on letting go. juana summers. with a few days to go, british prime minister theresa may said he will ask the union for another delay. she will sit down with jeremy

joining us from washington, d.c. with a look at axios one big thing, we have jonathan swan. what is axios' one big thing? >> we have reporting on president trump's relationship with the fed chair, jerome powell. late last year, the president considered firing jerome powell and replacing him with kevin walsh. walsh was on trump's short list when he ultimately selected powell. trump considered this according to two sources who discussed the matter directly with the president late last year. this is the latest development in what has been a tortured relationship over the last year on the functioning of the fed and markets.

>> talk to us about axios' reporting, that people close to biden believe bernie sanders' advisers are behind the campaign against the former vice president, which we have heard from sanders' camp, they are strongly denying. what are you hearing? >> well, this is reporting from my colleague. biden's advisers have made very clear that they're not diswaded from the allegations that are out. they're full steam ahead for his announcement. they are blamblaming, privately casting blame over their rivals for -- some of them are talking in conspiratorial terms, what is happening. >> do you have a sense of what's coming forward with joe biden, the women coming forward, may not only affect his decision to run, but how he enters the race? >> when he announces. >> i don't know about the announcement date, whether it's had a factor on that. what we're getting on the reporting is this hasn't had a

bearing on the announcement date. i think we're already seeing, to some extent, how biden is running. the question is whether he calibrates or changes. he's started his campaign on an apo apolo apologetic foot. saying times have changed, you need to listen to the woman, and their experience matters. we're seeing that already. the question is the extent to which he owns his record. he has a long public record, which we know is not entirely keeping with the modern democratic base or the activists component to the base. the question is whether biden embraces his record and runs as a centrist, or tries to apologize for certain things he supported in the past. >> i feel like we're waiting for biden to run as we were waiting for the mueller report to get released, saying it was wrapping up at any moment. now it is like, any moment, joe biden, they're going to announce he is running or not. what are you hearing from biden
