mistakes which we all make because we are human, he is a good person. he is willing to step up and say i didn't do right then. he has bounced back from terrible personal tragedy in his family. his own health. he got over it. he landed on his feet. i'm excited about his candidacy and i think it's going to be exciting. i do. >> what do you make of his implication. a lot of it was vivid imagery was video which i thought was fabulous. he compared charlottesville to the hitler rallies. the torch carrying and the neoclassical imagery. it looked nazi with the swastikas there. the implication he is sending is i'm the one who can stop this guy. i'm the unique candidate who can beat this guy. what did you think of him? >> i honestly think by using
4:05 pm
this video and a lot of experts said that wasn't a big deal. i thought it was courageous. i thought it was strong. he talked about the right wing. the far right. the nazis and the kkk. it's important that we have a leader who isn't afraid to look at that and i think it established him at a different place in the race, frankly. everyone else and i love so many. they are my friends and colleagues and may may beat joe at this point. i don't know. everyone said learn about me. joe didn't do that. he talked about the country. he talked about the problems we are facing and the most important problem we are facing is this division and the hate and the fear that is stoked by this president. i was touched. i was surprised at the video. i thought it was going to be something about winning the working class vote. there will be time for that.
4:06 pm
>> i agree so much. jamie, your thoughts about the gothic nature of this introduction into a campaign. good and evil. pretty direct. >> yeah. listen, chris, i thought it was a very powerful video and a powerful way to start. it focuses us in this primary on what's most important. we are in a battle for the soul of this nation. it's important that we remember that. it's important that democrats as we squabble about policies and who is to the left or the right that we focus and there a lot of people suffering in this nation because of the current leadership in the white house and his sick offense in the senate. we need to change that. i applaud the vice president for reminding us what is really, really important in this race. >> i want to ask you about something ethnic. some people would say racial. i like ethnic better. we are all the same race. here's a guy, a white guy, joe
4:07 pm
biden, who served as the number two guy to an african-american president. the only one ever. how powerful is that to people of color that he was the number two guy for all those years in a close working relationship. does that ring true or is he another candidate, another older white guy? >> chris, what i have told all these presidential candidates that come to south carolina when they are talking to the african-american community, the most important thins is they show and not tell. you really have to illustrate through your practice and through your actions what it means to be able to represent these various communities. the one thing i give joe biden, as the officer, i'm not for anybody. the thing i give joe biden is in the times of pain for the african-american community, particularly here in south carolina, he was here for mother emmanuel and he sat through services and didn't have a lot of pomp and circumstance.
4:08 pm
that means a lot to a lot of people. it's those actions that i say to all the candidates, think about running in 2028. we are going to win the white house in 2020. make sure you are out there and practicing and showing your action. how you are going to fight and what your values are. >> so well said. don't just show up for the ask. >> exactly right. >> well said, sir. after his announcement, biden was praised if not endorse bide barack obama's team. the spokesperson told nbc news, president obama long said that selecting joe biden has his running mates was one of the best decisions he ever made. he relied on the vice president's knowledge, insight and judgment throughout the campaigns and the presidency. the two forged a special bond over the last 10 years and remained close today. that's the statement from the president. biden was asked about president obama in wilmington.
4:09 pm
here's what he said. >> why did president obama endorse? >> i asked him not to. whoever wins the nomination should win on their own merits. >> a source familiar with president obama's thinking said the former president is excited by the extraordinary and diverse talent in the field of candidates, adding it's unlikely he will throw his support behind a specific candidate this early. eli, this guy is a big candidate, biden. everybody knows him and most people sort of like him. he's very comfortable. most people are comfortable with him. he's familiar. many say first day as a candidate will be his best. it's going to be tough because he's such a target. >> he didn't make his announcement about me, me, me. he doesn't have to. he's at 25 or 30% before he's
4:10 pm
even in the race. there is a lot of baggage by not focusing on biography. that will get prosecuted. he is offering a general election argument and a message about electability and a frame about trump. do you want eight years of a trump presidency or do you want to end it? i'm your guy. that's your guess. in 2016, democrats went with clinton thinking she was the safer choice. didn't work out. there are 20 plus candidates and there will be a couple more. this is going to be a fight. he will see if he can stay where he is right now. he can make a claim on a lot of states trump won and the rust belt, but not everybody in the party sees him and not everyone sees him. there is a hunger among some voters for somebody newer. diversity on the ticket.

poll. compromise or fight for values? >> this is like the toughest tight rope for even the most skilled politician to walk of the incentive structure to go out and act good and be civil to one another or is it to stand up and fight? can you brent the two? the interesting thing i thought about this poll -- >> has anybody done that? buttigeig, there is lanes. not left or right. we don't hate the other side and the other is we hate the other side. a lot of people say trump is evil and must be fought any way we can beat him. you have buttigeig who is more moderate in his voice. kamala harris is a bit more aggressive. bernie sanders is a lot more aggressive. >> cory booker is doing hugs and love. >> he's a lot more about that. the differences are less

ideology than the best way to take on trump. do you fight fire with fire. >> amy klobuchar is trying to be nice. she called it the woman next door. >> right. what this poll clearly shows is there is four main actor who is have the power to clean up their act. one, republican political leaders. two, democratic political leaders, number three, the media and number four the voters. media, political leaders, all culpable and voters blame them, but voters need to take responsibility and the contradiction shows why. political leaders it need to police their own. as long as they send the mixed message, they will continue to have the state. >> fine, go after me. i know every time i walk down the street, they don't say you

4:53 pm
it's a rural-urban or is it racial? the divisions are more than just logical right now. this sums it all. you see this level of pessimism with republicans and democrats and independents. younger voters were less pessimistic. that might be because they haven't known it any other way than this. >> what i notice that is different than growing up, my dad had buddies that played golf once a week. they were not rich, but his friends were all democrats. he never talked politics. they lived in the same world. today you know how it works. you go to a party, you assume one party is there. democratic or republican. people were saying i don't know anybody who would vote for trump. i don't know anyone who doesn't like trump. they are different worlds. >> in the 70s, the country was

far more divided on a number of important issues, but people were not drenched in politics the same way. it's so pervasive because of the 24-hour television and facebook. i can't go on facebook to check my friend's birthdays without seeing a screen about politics. it's everywhere and dominates everything. >> mitch landry said i don't pick my friends on the basis of politics. what? in this town they do. >> that's a controversial comment. vice president biden has gotten in trouble with that. >> we will continue this conversation. how rough and tough you should be and how nice occasionally should you be. occasionally. thank you so much. >> former fellow of ours. >> i like that georgetown elite. thank you, michael steel. up next, and good values. nelson mandella's words from a quarter century ago in america. you are watching "hardball." - choosing to foster a child

one of the greatest of human rights is how his words resonate what's happening in our country. he speaks to those who see racial diversity as a basis for national unity and those who use it to divide. here he is in the midst of his historic win. >> we have used diversity in order to build a strong nation, unlike the party that used diversity to keep us divided. to foment racial hostility among south africans. our vision of south africa therefore has been one where you have the bill of rights which entrenches the right of every south african. >> joe biden made a similar appeal and spoke of a president who refuses to condemn outright racism and backs racial
