tv   Hardball With Chris Matthews  MSNBC  June 12, 2019 4:00pm-5:01pm PDT

4:00 pm
p.m. eastern tomorrow. don't go anywhere. "hardball" with chris matthews and a lot of breaking news is up next. >> trump's perry mason moment. let's play "hardball." >> i'm chris matthews in washington. a stunning admission. the president told abc news he has no problem accepting dirt from a foreign power. he denied that foreign help should be considered election interference. listen to this. >> your campaign this time around, if foreigners, russia or china or someone else offers you information, should they accept it or call the fbi. >> i think maybe you do both. i think you want to listen. there is nothing wrong with listening. if somebody called from a country, norway, we have
4:01 pm
information on your opponent. oh, i think i want to hear it. >> you want that interference in our elections? >> it's not interference. it's information. phi thought there was something wrong, i would go maybe to the fbi if i thought there was something wrong, but if they come up with research, let's call the fbi, they don't have enough agents to take care of it. you talk honestly to congress men, they all do it and always have. it's called oppo research. >> two years of the mueller report and now we have the president's motive. there is nong wrong with taking dirt from the russians. it's a shocking statement from a president who won with help from moscow in 2016 and signals to foreign governments around the world that his 2020 campaign is open for business. i'm joined by the national security reporter from nbc news and jason johns and a political editor at the root and republican strategist.
4:02 pm
i will start with ken. this is the politics. he admitted there is nothing wrong with what he has been investigated for two years, playing footsie with the russians. >> it's so different. republican and democrat. it's outside the mainstream. steph nanopoulos said he called the fbi. trump is blowing it all up and sending a signal to the chinese and the russians and anyone who want to interfere, it's open season. hack, investigate, use intelligence methods to get incriminating information and hand it to donald trump. >> when i heard the president say that and great work by george stephanopoulos and nothing wrong with taking dirt from a foreign power, i thought that's why his lawyers wouldn't let him give live testimony. because they were afraid this character would just do a perry
4:03 pm
mason and say all right, i did it. >> not just a foreign power, but the adversary for the last 50 years. here's the problem why auto not a perry mason moment. what happens? nothing. >> you make a point. >> what happens? nothing. >> there is nothing wrong with it. >> on some level we know he is a completely selfish person and the only thing he cares about is himself. if he thinks it helps his election, take it. >> you understand politics as a big picture. he never did anything like that. he on air force one concocted with hope hicks sitting there this crazy story. we were talking about adopting russian kids when in fact his son told him apparently he was in there getting dirt on hillary clinton. >> we always knew he was lying. >> of course i was lying.
4:04 pm
>> the o.j. thing. here's how i would do it. okay, i did it. you got me. the question is, how many republicans take the justin amash standpoint. this may be a this is it moment. when the president said i will take information. >> do you think the republicans will crack? i will argue because i have been waiting are in guy. george is standing next to me at a weird angle looking down on him and he is looking up sideways like he doesn't want to confront him and said yeah, what's wrong with that? so what? like street talk. >> the president has proven he has no respect for the office he holds and no loyalty. >> how about criminal defense? >> no loyalty to the country. he is a traitor to the pillars of our democracy and the fact that there are not republicans legal to stand up to them, i don't know what they will be doing when donald trump gets kicked out in 2020 and people are looking at them with
4:05 pm
disdain. i hope they do. >> we focussed on this program and many other programs like nightly news and everyone else, trying to figure out what was trump's motive? did he know what he was doing? was he knowingly involved in getting dirt from the russians? we have social media about hillary. hacking into the democratic national committee and john podesta and everybody. all that dirt. we know the big three parts to it. everything they were doing. now he admits nothing wrong with that. a lot of russians were helping with that. >> robert mueller found they were too disorganized to have a real experience. it wasn't just about morals and ethics. trump was willing to do that. the russians didn't need to conspi conspire. they were powuring out the e-mails they were using them. there is trolling going on. he knows this will drive people crazy. >> come on.
4:06 pm
no, no. wait until you see how this cracks. this is not part of an elongated circular game delay. >> he just doesn't care. >> he thinks he's fine. >> that's his genius. >> he knows the democrats are too cowardly to to do anything. >> his base will eat it up. >> he was asked about the question to your son. he is doing what most people did to defend the family. the son went to trump tower and the son met in that interview and he expressed and explained why his son, donald trump, jr., did not alert the fbi and he received offers of russian dirt on hillary clinton. here he goes. >> should he have gone to the fbi? >> put yourself in a position. you are a congressman and somebody said hey, i have information on your opponent. do you call the fbi? i have seen a lot of things in my life. i don't think in my life i ever
4:07 pm
called the fbi. in my whole life. you don't call the fbi. you throw somebody out of your office. >> al gore got a stolen briefing book and he called the fbi. >> that's different. this is information on your opponent. let me call the fbi. give me a break. >> the fbi said that's what should happen. >> the fbi director is wrong. >> here clearly said not fbi and use the dirt, but just use the dirt. give me a break. >> that's what he will do in the future and what he has done. it's open season. now the question is what do we do with the information? >> he's going to war with his intelligence committee. the fbi director is wrong and yesterday he repudiated the cia for trying to recruit the brutal dictator because he is friends with the guy. we have never seen anything like this in history. >> the republican party is 9-1
4:08 pm
deference. we are thinking about that. why is the republican party defending him no matter how outrageously shameless he is? this was a good example. okay. why didn't he say get out of here? we know we do this. are you kidding me? >> believe it or not, i think they are worse than donald trump because they are not standing up for what they know is right. donald trump i actually think believes that there is nothing wrong with accepting information from foreign governments on your opponent. i don't think it's beyond him to think it's okay to make things up and use the government to take it forward. >> you have a first shot at this one. suppose i try to flip it for my right wing associates. i don't have many, but if i had, i would say this. suppose hillary clinton and chelsea clinton set up a meeting with a russian lawyer working
4:09 pm
for putin to get information on this billionaire, donald trump, to win the election and then it came out that their colleagues r7 pushing out stuff and hacking stuff out of the files. they are going after benghazi in the e-mails. what would they have done with this. >> they would go do town. and frankly i'm always surprised when we see the democrats not jumping on issues and coming up with messaging to go after this president. there is a lot to do. they should learn from the republicans frankly. >> he said everybody does it. >> they don't. that's a lie. >> i don't think i have met two or three russians in my life. they are nice people, but we don't deal with them. he is dealing with them on stuff. on stuff. >> everything trump says is a
4:10 pm
projection and a lie. he has never thrown anybody out of his office. he will take any dirt he can get. not only will he lie, but we don't know the information we will take. will it be on his own country? >> the first question, i will hit you with a political question. always asked the question in e the. >> he will have a measly mouth response and do nothing. no, it's not acceptable and i disagree with the president. >> what's lindsey graham going to say. >> he has no soul. it's missing. >> the only one who would do that is probably mitt romney. that's the only one who stands up at some level to the changes coming out in the mueller report and other things. i would be willing to bet he is one. maybe a couple of others, but they are all looking at the primaries and worried about
4:11 pm
donald trump coming after him. >> we have amash and half of mitt romney. this is a tough one. >> this goes beyond donald trump's political future and why the u.s. government is not doing enough to stop the next round of foreign election. there is no leadership. he is not interested in the problem. the fbi is doing a little bit and the cia and the nsa, but we are not prepared. >> and the senate leadership. >> investigating counter intelligence. not just the law. not just whether he has broken any laws, but to try to find out whether he can stop the government which is our adversary, it is now. from hurting us again. we are the great role model of the world. our elections happened. that's the electoral college, but the members are right. some win and some lose, but we don't go out and say it was rig
4:12 pm
and arrest the losers. lock her up. not in a country like america. trump comes along and said screw all of that, everybody does it. i don't think everybody deals with the things the way he does. that's a lie. >> we have hay tradition of not prosecuting our elected leaders. this one needs to be prosecuted. >> he admits he did it. >> and we have the obstruction and he's an unindicted coconspirator. we may have to break that tradition and prosecute him when he is done. >> you are the lead guy from our network and i have to tell you, what does it tell you if you heard this six months ago if he said yeah, what's wrong with that? >> i would have been sure mueller had more. you spoke with the findings that the not in the mueller report. that's what schiff wants to pry out of the fbi. mueller did not pass judgment on
4:13 pm
the flirtation between the trump campaign and the rugs. someone in the fbi i bet did. >> he said there was no conspiracy, but the approximate president said yeah, i will go along with that. >> from the republicans, they think that all information is tainted. i don't care where i got the from. even if it came off the back of a truck. even from a place like norway. >> that's a boring country, that's why. >> hey, hey. be nice to norway. >> i don't care where the information comes from. that's the element. he wants to dismiss the fact that there could be national security. >> let's go back to the motive. you are the attorney. if it's on the record that on the plane with hope hicks there, on the plane he said we have to cover up this meeting with my namesake, he said that meeting and the president on the plane
4:14 pm
rewriting history saying this was about adoptions. >> lying. >> doesn't that establish the fact that he thought it was illegal or improp onner. . >> it's consciousness of guilt. it's a perjury lie. not to judicial -- >> doesn't it show that he was covering up what he thought was illegal. >> it shows consciousness of guilt and what he knows he was doing is wrong. >> why is he saying it's okay? >> he doesn't care because nobody will do anything. >> i think he thinks he's safe. mueller has taken a disappearing act and doesn't want to testify. pelosi decides it's bad politics and he said now i can come clean. screw you guys. i did do it. >> he's not going to be prosecuted. >> he's not going to be impea impeached because none of the
4:15 pm
democrats have the backbone to do it. >> he is staring down the barrel of the prosecution. >> i want to say congratulations to george stephanopoulos. i don't know what he did. sometimes you get a guy disarmed. they did with me once about abortion. he gets disarmed and george was standing over him in that amazing position looking down on him and he was looking up at george and he said yeah, what's the problem, george. all macho man stuff. thank you for sticking around. much more on this breaking story. perry mason moment from the president. so what if i did? a stunning admission he said he is willing to accept the help of a foreign government in future elections and from a global rifle it's not interference. think about that. we also get to the other breaking stories that hope hicks with the former top aide insider can talk about what happened. when he said the cover story was

>> back with tonight's breaking story from trump that he thinks it's okay to take political dirt on an opponent from a foreign government. look at what he told george stephanopoulos today. >> your campaign this time around, if foreigners, if russia or china or someone else offers you information on an opponent, do you accept it or call the fbi. >> there is nothing wrong with listening. if somebody called from a country, norway, we have information on your opponent. oh, i think i want to hear it. >> you want that interference in our elections. >> it's not interference. they have information. i think i would take it. if there was something wrong, i would go to the fbi.

if someone coming up with appo research and they don't have enough agents to take care of it. but you talk to a congressman, they all do it and always have. it's called oppo research. >> he's not walter cronkite. even after robert mueller's investigation exposed the full extend of the elections, he said it's not interference, it's information. he said maybe he would call the fbi. ted liu from california. congressman, the president believes it's okay to take dirt, oppo research from a foreign government. he said it's okay. does that square with your committee's decision not to impeach him? >> thank you, chris for your question. what donald trump said is unamerican, unpatriotic and unbelievable. the issue is not oppo research. you can take oppo research and
4:21 pm
you cannot take it from a foreign power. there is a law against this. the federal election campaign ad said you can't take anything of material value from a foreign power. donald trump is selling america down for his own personal benefit. >> what do you think the russians were up to. he thought there was something wrong because he lied about it later saying it had to do with adoptions. do you believe his motive that he thinks it's okay to do this will move the committee on the judiciary and speaker pelosi to move now or not? >> so i expressed my personal opinions to the speaker. this decision will be made by the speaker and the caucus and i respect that, but we are going investigate and gather evidence

and the breakthrough where i and other members will be able to look at the underlying documents, specifically for the trump tower meeting and we want to know what was said and what the agents were told and when they interviewed the witnesses. if there was things of things that they continue to investigate that meeting. he was saying he wouldn't tell his fbi director that he got dirt offered to him over the phone. what do you make of that? >> donald trump and he thinks it's okay to get information about opponents from federal governments. that is illegal. the fbi director is absolutely right. we can look back historically when the al gore campaign got a package of will information that
4:23 pm
was going to reveal information about the bush campaign, they sent it to the fbi. >> let's look at this again. you are on the judiciary and i want your reaction to what trump said in that interview with stephanopoulos. >> should he have gone to the fbi. >> let's put yourself in a position if you are a congressman. someone said i have information on your opponent. do you call the fbi. i have seen a lot of things and i don't think if my i have called the fbi in my life. you throw somebody out of your office. >> al gore got a stolen briefing book and he called the fbi. >> that's different. they have information on your opponent. let me call the fbi. give me a break. >> the fbi said that's what should happen. t >> the fbi director is wrong. >> after all the fighting with pelosi and everybody and all this stalling game going, which

is what it is, what would you have done if you got the information a few months ago in the written answers to the questions by the special counsel. they wouldn't let trump answer the questions. they gagged the guy. here he is coming out with what looks to me like very, very dangerous testimony. >> this interview with donald trump is very revealing. it shows that the president does not understand the difference between americans and america and a foreign power. so as a member of congress if i got information, oppo research on my opponent from an american political consultant, totally fine. if a russian person or official said hey, we have dirt on your opponent, that's what you are supposed to do. the fbi director is right and donald trump is unpatriotic and unamerican for thinking he can take material information from a foreign power and use it against his political opponents. >> every role cal call you have
4:25 pm
see them around at a dining hall at lunch. do you think they will be held to this question? will the media say it's okay to take dirt from foreign governments? >> i hope every news host and every channel asked them, including fox news and i hope they don't ignore the story. what the president said is unbelievable. it is unpatriotic and unamerican. he's a commander in chief of the american armed forces and no commander in chief should be selling america down the river to a foreign power to benefit himself. >> last question. it's a little "hardball," but does it matter what you think as the house judiciary about impeachment? we keep getting reports that almost every democrat wants to move forward with impeachment yet you don't do it. does it matter what you think? >> so right now -- >> that's a cruel question. cruel as hell.
4:26 pm
i have been hearing from everybody. they said we want to do it and we want to do it, but you don't. >> so we are making the mueller report come to life and getting information from the american people. we had another breakthrough where next week we will interview hope hicks. that will be behind closed doors, but the transcription will be publicly available. we are trying to get information to the american people when the trump administration had all these contacts with the russians and they tried to obstruct the investigation into the contacts. >> i sympathize with your situation and hope hick ss is going to testify behind closed doors to make sure anything even slightly interesting is not talked about because they will claim executive privilege. >> they might, but they will lose in court. we have strong case law behind us. we will see what happens next week. >> i'm rooting for you, sir. ted liu of california.
4:27 pm
we will stay on top of that, but more breaking news to get to. donald trump, jr. in the meeting with the russians, the president covered up about it and now the president said so what if my son was in a meeting with the russians getting dirt on hillary clinton? we all do that. junior returns to congress to testify and he did it today while the top aide hope hicks is coming next week, but with the help of the white house, they will have a lawyer there with us. stay with us. will have a lawyer there with us stay with us ate a better visitor experience. improve our workflow. attract new customers. that's when fastsigns recommended fleet graphics. yeah, and now business is rolling in. get started at fastsigns.com. if you have moderate to little things can be a big deal. that's why there's otezla. otezla is not a cream. it's a pill that treats plaque psoriasis differently. with otezla, 75% clearer skin is achievable. don't use if you're allergic to otezla.

back to "hardball." a stunning news that the president is admitting now. he did it with george stephanopoulos. no problem taking dirt on a political opponent, hillary clinton, from a foreign power, russia. former cia director and national security intelligence analyst. thank you for joining us. i was stunned. your reaction to hearing the president say no problem. i can take dirt from the russians, basically. >> well, first of all, chris, it should be unsprying to all of us that that was his comments. that has been his attitude ever since he was on the campaign trail, number one. number two, this just is the definition of an unethical politician who is willing to stoop to anything to win an election and mr. trump does not have a problem with a foreign government shaping the outcome of a u.s. election.

the president is saying perry mace onch style, okay, i do this stuff. >> this is disgusting and this president thinks he is above the law and republicans need to step up. now they can't blame the democrats. the president said out of his own mouth that he is willing to take information on arrival that ll help him win an election. if the republicans don't check him, they are cowards and they are the ones that are anti-government. >> this is almost ludicrous. suppose hillary clinton and chelsea, her daughter, arranged to get dirt on donald trump and knew at the same time they were hacking into the republican national committee and taking dirt and putting in that information out to embarrass them and running through social media. this was part of a campaign of dirt. imagine if hillary clinton got caught in that web. she would be in prison. >> the republicans would not hesitate. they would try to do this. this is about who will stand up. >> why are the democrats not
