we want to bring us all in and together around the big challenges before us. >> not all of beto o'rourke's competitors were taking the day off. a couple getting their messages out. pete buttigieg hitting a t trifecta of shows. chuck todd pushed him on whether he would pursue charges on donald trump if he was elected. >> how do you change the channel and prosecute the former president at the same time? >> changing the channel means focusing ou how to make people's lives better. if there's investigations going on into criminal behavior by people who were at the highest levels in our government, so be it. bernie sanders facing the fire on fox news. while he was pressed on his stance on economic socialism. >> we need an economy and a government that works for all of us, not just the 1%.

if people want to accuse me of believing in that, i plead guilty. >> all of this as a new poll shows some shifts when it comes to the enthusiasm race among the top candidates. 66% of democrats say they are enthusiast basic or comfortable about a joe biden candidacy. that's down from march. elizabeth warren is up to 64% and bernie sanders is at 56%, down six points himself. one person not happy about the 2020 poll, donald trump. after a leak of polling showing the president trailing biden in 11 critical battleground state, the president did this and did what you expected. his campaign firing the pollster. the issue of pink slips coming up on whether trump had the right to fire robert mueller if he wanted to? >> you talk about article two.

your position is that you can hire or fire anybody, stop or stop. >> that's the position of a lot of great lawyers. that's the position of some of the most talented lawyers and you have to have a position like that because you're the president. without even bringing up article two, which absolutely gives you every right. >> let's get started with our nbc news road warrior who is following beto o'rourke in south carolina. this is a poll that you know well. b beto only up 4%. how is he handling that situation? >> reporter: he's handling it the same way he handles everything by diving sbook the ground game. being on the road. we have seen this so much from him. four events in south carolina. he has the road to himself today. the only one of the 23 candidates out campaigning.

a lot of these other folks doing television and starting to prepare for the debate. we all knew was going to be important. we'll talk more about the zk tk poll in second but all of these polls are starting to look largely the same. we're seeing joe biden at the top. his support slipping a bit is since he got into the race. elizabeth warren creeping into the second pspot. i asked what he would see as success. >> i want those who watch the debate to know why i'm running the campaign on father's day. i'm thinking about my kids and the fact they are counting on us. all of our kids at a very divided moment, at a time when this democracy is so broken, the only way to realize our potential is to bring people in and together. >> reporter: in talking to voters in all the different

campaign es vevents, there's on them and momentum seems to beget further moment. folks like joe biden because they think he is strong and can beat president trump. i used to hear people tell me how much they loved elizabeth warren. as her numbers started to tick up, that generated even more. all these other campaigns are looking at that dynamic and looking for the one thing that can make their numbers go up one point or two and start that upward growth. nobody i talked to feels like they are out of this thing yet. >> one of the things you're talk about the poll is the number of one percenters. they are not seeing momentum that voters could hop on board with. >> reporter: those folks have

been out on the campaign trial. i think some of these governors, current and former, these are folk who is have whole states that they are in charge of. the difference for those candidates and why they still have hope, they have qualified for these debates. they will get a moment on the stage. it's not as though voters and the rest of the country have had a good solid look at the candidates and rejected them. they haven't seem them yet. i think the danger is greater for candidates who start high and sink low. the candidates ovhovering aroun 1%. all of those candidate, i can't speak for all 23 or all of those 1 percent feel like if they get a moment they can get good look from the american public. >> thank you so much, sir. other candidates are also getting ready for the first democratic debate ten days from

the in your opinionumbers for y understand falling? >> i see a lot of people kicking the tires on a lot of different candidates. if you look at this same time, the republican primary had jep bush in first place and trump was out 1%. i'm telling you the polls drive us. they motivate our supporters. we see the establishment counts us out. they did that in 2015. we're going to say we have to work even harder. >> bernie sanders, can you be a two-peat? >> we're investing a lot on the ground. lots of volunteers and supporters. we feel good about our ground operations. we're going to make a super strong effort here come ng the

summer and early fall to demonstrate that the movement is strong and growing stronger. as we plain to voters there's only one candidate in field who is willing to mobilize and thinking about mobilizing millions of people and listing them into service. challenging poweringful special interest. change our government in a transformative way. i think people will grave at a time toward that. sfwlp how do you discuss the issue of age? >> there's a lot of people. the president of the united states. there's vice president biden. what we need to make clear to people is you're voting for vision. that's the thing that people want to feel like is the most important thing they're voting on. with bernie sanders you have

someone willing to take on special interests. who do you trust to change the system when you stack those issues up. i believe bernie sanders stands out ahead of the pack. >> how is bernie sanders going to address this on the debate stage when those from the right and left of where he is at, discuss the issue of democratic socialism? >> this is the debate we want to have. when you think a bt our held care system and you see tens of millions of whoent have health insurance and you're saying why is this system failing us? we've been trying to ticker with it for ages. tweet it here and there. it's corporate greed. the incentive to screw people over. who will change that and come in and say single payor, we're removing them out. that's the debate we want to have. when we make that argument we

women's act so that would be part of our nation's foreign policy. >> i want to go to the poll that came out today. wall street journal, nbc news poll shows that joe biden in terms of enthusiasm losing 7 percentage points. you can see that now versus march. what does that tell you? >> the poll numbers are going to be all over the place from here till the end. it is incredibly hard to maintain high poll numbers from start to finish. we anticipate that they'll change but, look, 66% which is the number that you quoted is pretty doggone good. >> that's worth 66% maybe. >> thank you. >> let's go to this. when you look at what joe biden needs to do during the debates, what's the win? >> i think he has to be himself.

welcome back. now it's time for red, white and you as the 2020 democratic field gets ready for their first debate a week from wednesday, we want to know what issues are most important to voters. one issue that seems to be on a lot of minds there, immigration. >> immigration isn't just the people in the fields. it goes much deeper than that. they are the people working behind the scenes at restaurants. the people working behind the scenes cleaning buildings or

who is are watching this debate. there's independents and republicans along the way that we have also talked to. yes, while the president maybe announced four years ago, this upcoming friday will be two and a half years since the start of his administration. there's a record now on which the president is are you positiving on and the democrats are comparing themselves to and frankly, these voters that we have talked to are beginning to look at the last two and a half years, the body of work by this administration whether it be on the trade war. whether it be on health care looking at the failed effort to repeal the affordable care act. there's one gentleman we talked to in nevada two days ago who said the republicans didn't come up with a better alalternative. he said he be will be watching. there's a broader audience here that will be watching this. four years ago there are 18 million people that watch that debate between bernie sanders, hillary clinton and martin

o'malley. we can expect the number to be higher than that. when talking to folks on the ground here, we keep hearing passionate answers in terms of their believes when it comes to issues. whether it's comes to candidates, they are a little more iffy but they have very specific policies they want to hear from the candidates and looking to discern between that field of 23. >> talking about the issues and the criteria. they will apply that to when they watch the first debates on june 26 and 27. south carolina, busy weekend. you can see biden losing nine. warren seems to have pushing for plus nine there. what are you see ng south

carolina as to why this is changing? >> warren has been surging. i've been noticing that not only at her events but when i go to other candidate's events and ask folk who is are undecided which candidates they are interested in. every single voter seems like they talk to they are considering elizabeth warren if not making her their favorite. >> do they tell you why? >> folks have talked in specific policy. student loans, student debt comes up to me. folks talk in general about the well known perception of her of having a plan. that reputation is widely known at this point. it has served her well.

he's the most trusted in the african-american community which is the decisive demographic in south carolina. some of them will have a chance to introduce themselves to voters. >> daniel, who is undecided? vaughn was talking about there are those independents and those who have not made up their mine. they are thinking about key issues important to them? >> i think a lot of the democratic parties is undecided. that's why we're seeing dramatic movements. joe biden's numbers are slipping. there's some erosion because there are a lot of democrats who

aren't fully decided on choices and say they prefer one candidate right now. maybe they prefer warren or buttigieg but that could change. they are still shopping around in this primary. >> the poll that came out within the last week here, you saw the match ups here. it looks very good for just about all the democrats except if you're kamala harris or bernie sanders. really, really close. i guess the concern for the democrats there if you're on the ground for any one of these campaigns, can you overplay your card here. it's never turned, at least so far, it's never turned blue. there's a big hope from the democratic side that could happen. >> exactly. that's why the democratic party is having this conversation about it. you go and win the likes of wisconsin and the likes of pennsylvania or pennsylvania and michigan and the field is open. kwhou can take michigan, georgia

even but there's the states here. texas which beto o'rourke lost by 2.5 percentage points. look next door, two doors down over in arizona. the democrat beat martha mcsally by several percent an points. if you win, if you're a democratic nominee, win. if you're able to take arizona and texas would be quite the snatch, you're talking about a map that's much different for this democratic party looking beyond 2020. >> a part of that margin you're discussing there, black voters.

>> that is the ticket here in south carolina. it's the reason why certain campaigns have been more focussed here than they have been in iowa, new hampshire or less focussed depending ho inin they think their candidacy could be. kamala harris has been laying down a significant ground game here and has picked up some important endorsements. bernie sanders has been trying harder in the african-american community than he did in south carolina and that is getting noticed as well and cory booker has been spending a lot of time here. they have spent by far the most of any candidates in the field. that's going do be all important. they are not going to change their mind os on a whim and go with somebody they don't know.

>> definitely a long time ago compare tods whd to what we're about now and how these candidates will resonate with that particular voting block as well as other minority voting blocks. >> yeah, i mean look, we have seen over the past two cycles in the mid term elections that the democratic party has put a increasing effort to reach out to african-american voters. i think that's part of the reason we haven't seen a huge amount of enthusiasm among the candidates.

they know who joe biden is. i think that will change over time. that's what the charleston poll showed us today. >> very quickly here is asked in south carolina yesterday, one voter said i didn't know cory booker was african-american. that really does resonate to the point you're making where the voters are still learning and still deciding. >> that's really a remarkable thing for a voter to say because booker has made efforts to do a lot of canvassing. a lot of campaigning for candidates around the country especially in the mid terms. he's often been the first surrogate on the ground for key races be it mississippi or anywhere in the south. >> within the last cycle. great to have three good brains here to talk about what we're going through right now. appreciate it. have a good sunday. coming up, the big idea. nbc news asking the 2020 democrats to pick the issue they hope defines their candidacy.
