it was the past few years that o'rourke had attention out of texas. it was last night, particular exchange with his fellow texan that really caught the eyes and ears of that debate. here is part of that. >> some of us on that stage have called to end that section, terminated. some like congressman o'rourke have not. i think it is a mistake beto. if you truly want to change the system, we have to repeal that section. >> thank you. let me respond to this. as a member of congress, i leped to introduce legislation to make sure we don't criminalize -- if you are fleeing, you are talking

one part of this. >> that's not true. if you did your homework on this. >> reporter: that was about the most contentious part of the debate last night. to clarify, what castro was calling for is a repeal of section 1325 of immigration law. this is part of immigration law that allows the federal government to prosecute those that cross the country illegally. what beto o'rourke is contending is that there should be a mechanism when it comes to human traffickers or drug smugglers in which the government can prosecute these offenders. castro says this should be burr purely going through the immigration system. this is night number one, we should expect more from night number two.

way to take the people who have medicare and say you can't have that anymore or change into or out of an obama care situation. i think most people who shop around and pick a new plan every six months. these are sort of issues if a candidate wants to make a case on, they have to explain to voters. >> for weeks now, we've talked about top issues. health care being number one. the candidates that will be on stage tonight, do they have the opportunity to reshape how they'll respond to a lot of issues because they saw how the can candidates spoke last night?

>> i think on health care, they were asked if they would be okay with abolishing private health care. with so many candidates on stage and so much ground to cover, it is hard to get to every single topic. health care is an important topic. we saw immigration and then health care. we were surprised we didn't hear more about women's reproductive rights. it is turning into more of a swing turn out.

respiratory conditions. >> an unfortunate reality there. back to senator klobuchar, she mentioned free public college and wanting to cancel up to $40,000 in debt for americans. >> i do get concerned for paying for college for rich kids, i do. i think my plan is a good one. that would be first of all to make community college free and make sure everyone else besides that top percentile gets help with their education. >> this is a common criticism of this plan. is senator warren's college proposal similar to paying for college for the rich? >> what amy klobuchar said here is mostly true. one warren is proposing free public college.

you could make the argument that because it is not tied to income, wealthy families could take advantage of this and we would be paying for college for rich kids. that said, extremely wealthy families, are the families that are likely to send their children to private schools, which are not at all part of this plan. elizabeth warren has a plan to cancel student loan debt. under her plan, people with a house hold income of under $250,000 are still getting considerably relief. her claims here do hold up. >> we have a lot of good fact

wondering should they be voting for someone who request beat the president or someone they believe in? we've seen warren rising in the polls. she is very much about issues. she definitely didn't take the bait that a lot of others did on the stage last night. she was not about the infighting. she stuck to her message. did she do it well enough? can she be one in the same? can she be the person who beats the current president and inspires people to vote for her because of the issues? >> it is very early to tell if she can beat donald trump. i don't want to make too many forward predictions. >> but that's what people are thinking. you are looking at those candidates thinking i like what they say but can they stand on

that stage next to donald trump. we are fooling ourselves if we think that's not going through people's mind's watching this. >> right. talking to a lot of democratic strategists, i'm hearing more and more that elizabeth warren is in the best position to win the nomination. it is too early to tell. joe biden hasn't seen a slip but she's rising. i wonder if her focus is the correct formula to really beat donald trump. donald trump does not necessarily focus on the issues a lot. in 2016, he went on the offense attacking clinton not only on the issues but making a series of personal attacks and did that in the 2016 primary. you are seeing warren not even get into it. with joe biden coming under fire with the remarks of him working with two segregationalist

senators. you saw more of this infighting. i don't know if a lot of democrats have the appetite to see that infighting. they want someone who is willing to stick to the issues and rise above. s maybe that would send a strong message if warren were to face off against president trump. >> and the president we have been told just touched down in japan as he begins a two or three-day trip there to attend the g20. we have the trade war with china. rising tensions with iran. he is set to met with putin. yesterday, he told some reporters there, we asked him what he was going to talk with putin about. the president said none of your business. we know he watched the debate last night. he tweeted one word.

them on? >> it was very difficult for someone like myself to take someone like governor inslee. he seems like a nice man torks take him serious. by saying the president is the largest threat was a a joke and he was throwing red meat to the base. >> why do you think that was a joke? >> because i think the president is actually doing an excellent job with handling china and putting tariffs on mexico and china and dealing with trade. >> so you think the trade war is a good thing right now? >> i do. >> what about iran? we know iran will be top of mind. he's meet iing with the preside from china and vladimir putin. top of mind will be iran. how is the president doing with that right now? >> it was wise for him to pull out of the iran deal. it was interesting to see all the candidates last night disagreed with that including tul tulsi gabbard. i liked her. she came across strong outside

of that answer. when us yo had the one answers as to what was the biggest threat, she did say nuclear war, which i agreed with her. those that spoke of climate change, only had a tough time taking serious, but if they said that intermix ed with china, thn i took them seriously. >> we have a resurgent china. you have iran, which is is a persistent threat. you have the crisis in central ameri america. and you have hot spots all over the middle east. based on what we saw last night, based on what you know the candidates will had see tonight, who is best to tackle the range of these threats here as we have a minute length of time in our coverage this morning? >> based on the debate performance, the three that stood out to me was cory booker -- >> just one moment if you can standby as we're watching the president disembark from air force one to begin the g-20 summit talking about many of the
