welcome back. joining us now from washington, d.c. with a look at axios a.m. the co-founder mr. mike allen himself. good to have you with us. >> welcome back. something looks right this morning. >> oh, wow, thank you so much. i appreciate it. >> i don't know what you're talking about. >> a familiar feeling. >> thanks, mike. let's talk about axios one big thing. >> the axios one big thing is republicans demographic decay. so the largest long-term threat to republicans is in population trends. it's not just that the country is getting more diverse, it's that swing states in particular are getting more diverse. listen to these stats.
2:57 am
every single state has gotten more hispanic since 2000, if you look at key republican states, florida a quarter hispanic, texas two-thirds hispanic, arizona a quarter hispanic and listen to this, the two states that have had the fastest growth in nonwhite population are two big states for trump, big states for republicans, florida and texas, the giants. >> interesting. >> so given what we have seen as we well know by well because we have had a lot of coverage of it from the president this last week or so and the attacks he has made against these four freshmen congress women, what do these shifting trends mean for the 2020 campaign? >> this is the difference between a short-term strategy and a long-term strategy. here is another way to say what we said at the top, theres not a single demographic trend that's favoring republicans. the country is getting younger and the country is getting more diverse. president trump is thinking very

short-term and thinking about how he can juice his specific turnout in 2020. that's a decision that could echo for generations because if you are a republican who is coming up, you realize that marginalizing minority voters that you need could be a huge problem down the road. >> so let me get your thoughts on this because i know axios has been looking at the democratic presidential candidates and the big winners for small donations which has become an important metric over the last few election is cycles, who came out on top in the second quarter for you? >> this stat is super interesting. the campaigns really pay attention to it because it indicates how you're doing with the grassroots. we will see there at the at the top is secretary julian castro who is not at the top of many other lists for 2020. look who else is pretty high end on that list, senator sanders and senator warren, they get two-thirds of their donations
2:59 am
from smaller donors. it can be a measure of online strength and that's what we see with donald trump there on the graphic we see president trump has a higher share of small donations than the other top tier democratic candidates, than biden, than buttigieg, than kamala harris, and they also watch it because, again, i mean, you're bringing in lower income voters. >> it's interesting when you look at that list if we could bring that back up, you guys, marianne williamson her numbers are obviously not as big as you see with bernie sanders at $18 million and elizabeth warren, but the percentage of her small donors, 70%, still pretty high as well. how critical are these small donors to the life of their campaigns? >> you were right to point to her because she got a good online buzz from that msnbc/nbc debate, people enjoyed listening to her talk about her soothing
3:00 am
ideas and -- >> soothing ideas. >> -- you can see how long -- you can see how that can translate online, and this helps explain why we get so many of those emails from campaigns where they say just give me a dollar or just give me $15, give me a dollar and a dream, and part of it is so that they can boost this number. if you get a lot of big donors you want to bring it down, if you don't you want to have a stat you can win. >> after a week like this we could all use a little soothing at some point. thank you very much. we will be reading axios a.m. in just a little bit. you, too, can sign up by going to signup.axios.com. >> that does it for us, i'm yasmin vossoughian alongside ayman mohyeldin. "morning joe" starts right now. what's your ethnicity? >> why is that relevant? >> they represent a dark underbelly in this country. >> she looks down with contempt on the hard working americans saying that
