incident started. there's a very short timeline of violence. for that, we're very fortunate. this was all an exterior event. it all occurred outside. >> any description of the shooter you can share? >> not yet. the shooter is deceased. you know, we still -- we're interviewing obviously a lot of witnesses as well as officers to try to determine if anybody else was involved. >> what type of weapon was used? >> it was a long gun. >> no officers were injured. >> nine dead, plus the suspects. so ten dead on east fifth street and 16 that we're aware of, hospitalized in unknown condition. >> we also spoke with a witness who was an eyewitness to all of this. listen to how anthony reynolds describes the scene. >> we hear a shot like we just hear the sound of a gunshot.
3:03 am
we didn't think it was a gunshot because we're not used to that. then we hear a repetitive array of gunshots. my friend was behind me. i'm telling him, come on, they're shooting. as i turn around, you can see bodies falling in the line at the bar. people falling and screaming and then the chaotic, the mob of people running. you can just -- it became a frenzied situation. >> anthon incompetent, i'm so sorry that you had to witness this. can you describe for us what this neighborhood is like on a normal night. >> it's live bands, it's nightclub atmospheres, bars, just a lot of middle class, working class people, college students. it's very peaceful. oregon is one of dayton's historic districts. we spent a lot of time down there. we cherish that area. we usually don't have any incidents. >> i know that police told us that they were able to respond
3:04 am
very quickly because they were out there on patrol for what was supposed to be a fun, regular saturday night. how quickly did you see law enforcement respond to this awful situation? >> i can honestly say that law enforcement were prompt. they are usually down there with heavy presence in the oregon district on saturday. it's usually peaceful because of it. but at this point, they responded quickly. i can't say what -- i've seen any of them do. i was kind of running. but i know for sure, at least within a minute. it wasn't too long. >> anthony, did you see the shooter? >> yes. heavy-set, white man. black attire. he had a face covering up but you could see the top of his head. >> all right. you heard the words from anthony reynolds. we spoke with him a few moments ago. he said it sounded like pop pop,

shooter, they believe, was the person behind the massacre. has not been identified but confronted by multiple officers and eventually died from gunshot wounds. we don't have a motive at this point but we know that the weapon used was a long gun. the latest numbers once again, disheartening to share this with you. nine dead, 16 wounded. police are saying that there is no longer a threat to the area. once again, they do shooter. they're investigating the possibility of more people being involved. as you know, in scenes like this, multiple agencies arrived quickly and the fbi is investigating. >> kathy, we also talked to the spokesperson of one of the hospitals in the area. kettering health system. what do you know about the extent of at least of the 16 injured? >> jo, to be honest with you, i'm en route to the airport
3:07 am
right now. as far as what i have been hearing, as far as reports go, injuries right now are holding steady at 16. officials are not releasing the extent of those injuries. as you know, these numbers are preliminary and can fluctuate throughout the morning. >> totally understandable. just this note to our viewers of what you're looking at on the screen. the large image that's there on the left, that's a live picture of the historic oregon district there in downtown dayton. occasional occasionally, somebody will come in front of the camera shot. that's because it's a live picture there. you can see several hours after the shootings took place, that area is sealed off and heavy police presence right there as cops are trying to figure out what exactly took place. i know that the fbi is on the scene as well. we believe other agencies, federal agencies will be en route.
3:08 am
we're joined by kathy park en route to the scene of this. you said it at the top. quite unbelievable that less than 24 hours after the massive shooting that took place in el paso, we're en route and hearing about another one this early morning. >> kendis, that's right. as i mentioned, this happened hours ago in a popular area of downtown dayton. the oregon district. as you know, the popular place because of a lot of restaurants and bars it's known for. just lots of activity. it's also a saturday evening. fortunately, there were a lot of officers on the scene because it was a normal evening. i apologize, i'm getting out of the car to get to the shooting. but i was told that there is no immediate threat at this point. they are investigating the possibility of another shooter.

a few minutes ago, reporter ashley kirk land of our affiliate in cincinnati spoke with two witnesses of the shooting in dayton. let's listen in right now. >> how did you know tonight was different? >> the screams. the cruisers. the chaos. i've never been pushed out of -- i've never been told to get out. but the security guards and themselves were running around telling people to get out. just how everybody was acting, you knew that something was wrong. you came outside, as soon as you hit the street, you see the bodies. you knew that this was different. you knew it's something you never thought of experiencing. never experienced. wouldn't want anyone to experience. >> we're going to bring you from dayton, ohio, to el paso, texas now. we're going to get the latest from nbc's morgan chesky. morgan, what is the latest at the crime scene there?

>> reporter: jo, this investigation very much under way this morning. the walmart where all of this took place just behind me about 50 yards away. that's where investigators are still making their way through that building, gathering every bit of evidence they can in hopes of building a case against this alleged shooter. the only believed suspect that walked into this walmart yesterday morning, we believe he started to open fire in the parking lot before making his way inside where some people were able to run outside to find safety, others trapped inside, forbesed to hide. we've seen -- forced to hide. video of people ducking behind whatever they could as the telltale sound of gunfire rank throughout the building. we know there was a woman working at a checkout who confused that sound with someone dropping large boxes. it was indeed the sound of gunfire. she was able to get people and move them outside. this walmart, keep in mind, is in a popular area. we're only five miles from a

heavily used border crossing from texas into mexico. it's near the mall which is adjacent to it. that was placed on lockdown for hours yesterday. many people not knowing what was going on as police tried to keep everyone there, they hoped to track down the suspect and take him into custody without incident. at this point in time from our last check-in with authorities, they aremotive. there is an essay that was posted online that is believed to be tied to him at this point in time. it's not been confirmed. it was an essay detailing an anti-immigration, anti-government, anti-corporation here just dee testing so much of what america stands for before this attack took place. we do know that federal authorities were tipped off to the posting of this online essay about a half hour before the gunman opened fire. but that wasn't enough time for them to intercept him before

he's believed to have shown up at this walmart and pulled out that rifle and start shooting people inside. unfortunately, at this point in time, a lot of families are left waiting in this area, jo. there's still victims inside. they don't know yet their current status. >> morgan chesky, thank you so much. we're going to el paso where blayne alexander is back with us. several patients have been operated on since arriving at the hospital. what do we know about the extent of the injures, blayne? >> thank you. we're here at del sol where 11 patients were brought. this is one of three hospitals triting the wounded. we're waiting to hear a news conference in less than two hours. we're going to hear from the ceo of the hospital and the director of medical trauma. we're going to find out how the patients are doing. you heard morgan talk about the

fact that families are waiting to see where loved ones are being treated. earlier this morning, there were about six, seven or eight, a group of people out here waiting to seven, or eight, a group of people out here waiting to see if they could get information because they believe they might know 1 of the 11 patients being treated inside del sol medical center. so a lot of that is heart-wrenching when you think about the fact that we're now hours into the response to this and there are so many families who just don't know where their loved ones are. so i want to go over to university medical center as well, because that's one of the places that's treating these patients. we do know that the former congressman for this area, beto o'rourke, of course, a 2020 candidate, visited some of the patients there yesterday. he spoke afterwards and said he wished that he was able to come on different circumstances, under different circumstances. but this is his hometown, and he spoke very passionately about just the kind of resiliency that you see from the people here in el paso and the people coming together. so, we can expect to see an

update here, more people coming to visit some of the patients, and certainly looking for a lot of updates on the medical conditions, and hopefully, some names and some idea of who exactly was targeted during that attack yesterday. >> we know there was a call to donate blood. hundreds of people showed up. what can you tell us about those donations? have they been helpful here? >> reporter: well, you know what, that's really what's been so remarkable here. one of the kind of story lines we're seeing that's been so remarkable. it was a tweet that went out from el paso police, essentially saying, urgent, blood is needy urgently, just a simple tweet. it did not take long at all for there to be lines, constant pictures and videos of lines, people just wrapped around the corners almost, waiting to donate blood. so yes, that is something that has come in handy, we understand, because they were looking at a possible shortage of blood just because of the sheer number of wounded that they were trying to treat across three different hospitals here. so, that's something that people have pointed to repeatedly as

just the spirit of people here in el paso trying to help in any way that they can. and i will share this bit with you guys. as i was riding from the airport yesterday, i was talking with my uber driver about this, and he said he's lived in l paso almost his whole life, and i was just kind of asking his thoughts, and he paused for a long time and then just gave a deep sigh and says, i guess it means that el paso is now just brought into the real world. so, a kind of somber take from him, just saying, look, this is unfortunately the reality and now, sadly, el paso, texas, is part of that grim reality, guys. >> a community certainly reeling here. blayne alexander, thank you for joining us from el paso. appreciate it. >> back with us now is former atf agent jim kavanaugh. and jim, earlier, i don't know if your ears were ringing, i was quoting what you were saying yesterday in reference to the el paso shooting, where you said, "these garbage white nationalist screeds posted online are being

written by cowards who then go out and kill kids and innocent people. it spreads just like with isis and al qaeda. it's nothing new. just repackaged for the digital age." expound on that. >> well, let's take you back historically. you know, there was a notorious meeting of organized hate in estes park, colorado, in 1992, and it was the klansmen, the militias, the antigovernment extremists, haters, the neo-nazi pasto pastors, and they met there in the mountains. and lewis beam, the notorious klansman, issued a writing at that meeting about leaderless resistance. and it was on the heels of all of us in the federal service and law enforcement breaking up a lot of these klan and nazi groups by infiltrating them. i mean, we were infiltrating those claverns and groups and
3:54 am
taking down their conspiracies. i mean, we had actually had atf agents, you know, marching as klansmen inside, infiltrating the groups in klan marches. fbi was working on them. atf was infiltrating them. we were destroying them. and beam came up with this leaderless resistance. it was from an old military idea against the soviet union developed in the '80s, but he pushed it did with the nazis. and we're seeing it today. it's taken hold. this was his vision, that people would act. and many of the shootings that we all know about -- i won't enumerate them all -- but in recent years were the effect of this leaderless resistance. in other words, act on your own. you don't need direction from the head of the klan or the nazi head. you just need a figurehead, someone out there who's talking and is espousing the philosophy, and you act on your own when the time is right. >> so, in modern-day history, who's doing that? >> well, in modern -- there's

still a lot of these agents of influence on the web that are direct purveyors of that influence. a lot of this talk is mainstream, and it's in the political world, and you see all this talk from the president about go back and anti-immigrants, and that plays into their mind-set. so, there's a lot of energy for them out there from politicians, and there's also direct orders or direct encouragement for mass murder. so this is what's going on. now, al qaeda and isis also used those tactics later and would direct their followers, just go out and drive a truck over people, you know, use whatever you have, make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom. i mean, they were also using this leaderless resistance model that lewis beam, the notorious klansman had perpetrated in '92. and we all had to work after that on these people who were doing these things. >> yeah, we did. >> and they're still doing it today. they're still doing it within the last few hours.
3:56 am
that's what we're watching, leaderless resistance. >> that is the frightening part of what's taken place on the streets of our cities all across america. jim cavanaugh, thank you. >> we're waiting for the mayor of dayton, ohio, to hold a nerves conference on this deadly shooting that killed nine people overnight. we're going to bring you all of it at the top of the hour.
