checks. calling for support early in the week as he had after the shooting in parkland, florida. the nra chief executive spoke with trump on tuesday and told him a background check bill would not be popular among supporters but before his trip to el paso and dayton yesterday, the president still seemed determined to act. >> i'm looking to do background checks. i think that is important. i don't want to put guns into the hands of mentally unstable people or people with rage or hate, sick people. >> what about assault rifles? >> well, i can tell you that there is no political appetite for that at this moment, if you look at, you can speak you can do your own polling. there is no political appetite from the standpoint of legislate your. i will attorney generally bring that up.

president biden, cory booker, beto o'rourke and others talking about bringing together the moral core of this country and being somebody that can champion all the people could very well impact this crowded field. >> on gun reform, where are things likely to head. could we see legislation make its way through the senate that actually ends up on the president's desk and signed? >> there is no question the politics around gun control in washington are changing. we've heard the so-called red flag laws that remove guns from some people they seem dangerous. they feel that doesn't go far enough. the president has already said back in february when they were brought to the floor he would veto them. mcconnell said he wouldn't bring them to the floor.

the big wildcard is the president. if he would come out and talk to lawmakers of his party and say, look, i do earnestly want to see background check legislation move forward. i think that could have a ripple effect of lawmakers who currently oppose those policies could possibly bring them along and have some real movement on the issue which hasn't seen a lot of movement since after the sandy hook shooting. >> we know a lot of policies he makes are based on the last person he spoke to or the last event event he's reacting to. if the snapchat last person he spoke to is the nra, he'll go one way or the other way. >> that's correct. in the nra, they have the president's ear. they've been talking, i go back to what he said in those

>> welcome back, wall street suffered another day of wild swings sparking renewed concerns among investors. joining us live from london. good morning to you. stocks regained much of their losses by the close yesterday. what can we expect to see today? >> it was a wild session yesterday. actually the dow saw its biggest come back ever for the year in 2019. at one point, it was down over

600 points. by the end of the section, it had recovered to almost flat. about 70% of the stocks in the s&p were at 2% or more to give you a feel of what we overnight, things have stabilized somewhat. we have seen stocks up in the green. european averages are trading a little bit more in firmer market territory and the indices in the u.s. are pointing to open up firmer as well. for the week, many of the indices are trading down south of 2%. the market is still very much concerned about the global growth outlook here. one company we are looking at in particular throughout the last 24 hours is barney's, you may recall they filed for bankruptcy earlier this week, and plan to reduce the footprint and find a new buyer. they had filed for bankruptcy for $75 million but a surprise last-minute funding in the last 24 hours, from capital management, who will pay the 7 a million and inject another 134

million into barney's to stay open until october 24 and hopefully find a new buyer by then. >> let me get your thoughts on the wal-mart ceo who issued a lengthy statement on this weekend's mass shootings and obviously walmart has been at the center of this for many years now and saying the retail giant will respond in a thoughtful and deliberate way, not quite sure what that means if they're willing to take any specific measures on preventing sales of weapons or ammunition, but what is the market saying about what was behind this statement? >> two things we know about the walmart stores in the space of three days, as a consequence, many people have called on walmart to stop selling firearms, they're one of the largest sellers of guns and ammunition in the united states, so yesterday, the walmart ceo responded in a lengthy statement online actually, expressing his grief, shock, and anger at the events, but then he also said, we are a learning organization,

welcome back, joining us from washington, d.c., with a look at the co-founder, mike allen, good to have you with us. what is ax onone big thing? >> it is big business, under pressure on guns so we just saw that clip about walmart in the previous segment and a lot of big companies are hearing this, because a lot of companies touch guns, even if they don't actually make them. so you have bankers, you have retailers, you have shippers, very complicated supply chain, and here's why it matters. big business can actually make changes. they can't blame partisan gridlock like lawmakers can. the businesses can make quick changes and they haven't. there has not been a single big corporate change after this tragic weekend in america. >> so okay, we're four days post shootings from the weekend, is there any sense that they are

going to make some substantial changes? >> there are. i heard in that walmart statement the clear signal that they're reconsidering their stance on guns. and axios is reporting, showing a lot of big companies are reconsidering it. you're right, it has been a couple of days, and they're not going to do something hasty, but here is the bottom line, is that these companies face increasing pressure from within to make changes like that. so companies that used to be able to ignore a lost outside pressure, they now have pressure from customer, from activists, from their own employees, from employees that they want to recruit, to take a stand on some of these big issues. >> it is interesting to see on that story we reported earlier about the ceo, the equinox investor, and sole cycle and how companies had to put out a statement distancing themselves from the ceo support. >> i bet there is more to come on that. that is painful pressure and that is a perfect example of what we're talking about. >> and let me ask you about another interesting story, because i know axios has new
