findings are what the pharmaceutical companies are talking about. if some of those findings get to another court or another jury it is going to be a major part for the industry. the judge concluded that they made a deliberate choice to market opioids for long term chronic pain in a way that was not necessary and told doctors to ignore signs of addiction and prescribe even more opioids when they saw signs of addiction which was obviously addiction. >> let me get your thoughts. understanding this is very important. we need to reorganize and look at our finances. in this case, they're laufring offering to reorganize into an entity that is no long a for-profit company but instead, it exists for the sole purpose to helping to fix the wrongs that they arguably created. and the benefit to the individual owners of the corporation is that in chapter 11 bankruptcy, you only lose as an owner the investment you made in the company they don't reach your personal assets. which makes this offer even more interesting. because the sacklers apparently are offering to contribute their own money. a significant sum. and that's very compelling considering that chapter 11 bankruptcy, one of the chief benefits to owners is that they don't lose any more of their personal money, other than the money they invested that is in the company. >> okay. so, you said this is something that all parties have to agree to. what are the largest impediments being agreed to on all fronts? >> logistics.

. joining us now from washington, d.c. with a look at axios a.m., cofounder and ceo of axios, mr. jim vandehei. what is axios's one big thing. we're looking at the 2020 democratic field and how almost every candidate now is staking out positions that no democrat would have dreamed of or dared taking a lot of these positions even two or three years ago, and if you actually step back and look at the field and look at their policy positions, one way to look at it is i think hillary clinton or barack obama would be very conservative democrats in
2:50 am
this field, so what do i mean by that. if you look at basically the wide embrace of medicare for all, the wide embrace for multitrillion dollar climate plans. if you look at immigration, everything from creating, maybe turning it into a misdemeanor if you're coming across the border illegally or offering benefits to immigrants who come here illegally, if you look at wiping away, like i said, education debt, so you go down that list, these were positions that barack obama and hillary clinton wouldn't have dreamed of taking because they thought they would get a huge backlash among centrists and would have a hard time wooing independents. democrats are making the calculation that now is the time to sort of take a big public stand on these topics that are motivating the base, that are motivating the people who turn out, that are motivating the people who give money in democratic primaries. >> so then, jim, can you take this research and the way people are feeling and put it towards who becomes the party prospect,
2:51 am
as we get closer to picking the nominee. is it something that will likely be very much to the left, very liberal or will the centrists say we have to pick somebody who might be palatable for all? >> there isn't a centrist in the race. joe biden would be the closest thing to a centrist. you look at the last debate, and he has to distance himself from barack obama, and a lot of republicans who are watching, barack obama, isn't he super liberal, no, a lot of democrats are saying that he needs to do more on health care, needs to do more on immigration, and needs to be more liberal on a lot of these topics that barack obama didn't really want to touch, and so there is a centrist at the top of the field. i think the two parties have moved apart. one of the most interesting phenomenons in some ways, both parties are being reinvented in realtime before our eyes in this race, if you think about republicans becoming america first trumpers, and what's happening on the left with democrats. >> let me pick up on that
2:52 am
quickly and get your thoughtingthoughts. is this just a strategy for the primaries and whoever emerges will have to try to merge to the center if they want to win some of the base or some that went to trump in 2016 who may have originally been for obama in 2008. >> it's a good question. that's typically how it works. it's hard for me to see bernie sanders or elizabeth warren in particular, if they won the nomination, suddenly trying to run as a centrist, it wouldn't fit. it's not than ideology. you would see a lot of that be biden if he's able to win. you look the policy proposals, particularly that bernie sanders has been putting out, elizabeth warren has been putting out, if anything, they are pulling the party further to the left, and i think liberals are excited. to h lerell with it, let's stoph these mushy topics.
