allowed to stay because police thought he could help. >> kardashian said that's jason simpson. so that's a name we're able to call out. he stops. he turns around. >> roger sandler saw it all and still believes jason was then in serious danger. >> jason simpson very well could have been killed that night if he had anything in his hand or had he made a move. >> in the deposition, "dateline" obtained, jason explained he just wanted to see his dad. >> did you run to the car? >> yeah. >> for what reason? >> desperation. i tried to reach through a.c.'s window, and a.c. stopped me and pushed me back. and i guess it kind of shocked me, brought me back down to reality. i had the police behind me yelling and a.c. yelling and i had just turned around and just said, jesus, just get back in the house. let these guys handle it. >> jason was hustled inside and handcuffed. one crisis averted.

but his father remained in the car, still armed and a potential danger to both police and to himself. >> simpson was resting his chin on the barrel of a revolver. >> in his deposition, simpson said he wasn't thinking about the police. even after spending hours evading them. he claims to have been focussed on someone else. >> by then i was in so much pain for nicole, i wasn't thinking about the police at that point. those weren't things being arrested was not something that was on my mind at that time. >> choppers with cameras continued to hover over the scene. beaming live pictures to the millions who were watching the lapd's every move. >> you got to understand the history of the lapd. there were people betting on us that we were going to fail and have a horrific outcome. and the folks that were there

were not going to let that happen. >> at times the choppers had trouble getting a clear view. not so for photo journalist roger sandler. he continued shooting pictures. in fact, sandler was so close to the action that robert kardashian mistook him for a cop and made a desperate plea. >> he kept grabbing my arm and begging, don't kill him. you shouldn't kill him. please don't kill him. kardashian was pleading with me with tears in his eyes. >> the team began to negotiate with simpson. >> we immediately go to work. we want to introduce dialogue. >> but they faced yet another challenge. the bedlam surrounding them, the deafening noise made communication next to impossible. >> get rid of these helicopters. we cannot hear. >> and they had to deal with something else, something even less manageable and way more unpredictable.

phone? >> he's not making a whole lot of sense. still a moaning. >> i'm not going to hurt nobody. >> o.j., we know that. pick it up. >> i'm not going to hurt you guys. >> nothing seemed to be changing simpson's mind. the s.w.a.t. team knew to get him out they first had to get al cowlings out. >> listen to me, o.j. listen to me. and then what you could call a fortune mishap. the cell phone simpson was using to talk to the s.w.a.t. negotiator died. now they had an opportunity to get cowlings out of the car to grab a new phone. >> some sort of negotiation going on in the driveway there and it appears to be al cowlings. >> he was able to step out. we enticed him. and then when he got close to the door, we were able to secure him and then remove him from that whole process. >> roger sandler took these exclusive, close-upshots of an agitated cowlings just as he exited the bronco. >> cowlings was very volatile.

just sat there. >> i think he was overwhelming with everything. >> what's simpson saying in that moment? >> he is talking about being disappointing. it was more emotion, family -- >> somebody from the outside is looking in and they see him looking at the pictures of his kids. >> so the s.w.a.t. negotiator appealed to simpson's sense of family and also played to his large ego. imploring him to protect his legacy and not be remembered this way. >> he was provided a lot of dialogue that was supportive to encourage a surrender. >> finally, after some 40 minutes, a breakthrough. >> he made it clear during the dialogue process that the gun was not for us. >> i would never point anything at you guys. i would never point anything at you guys. >> albanese says simpson finally put the gun down.

prosecutors ultimately decided not to charge al cowlings for his role in the chase. a representative for cowlings told da"dateline" he was tryingo save both their lives in an extremely volatile situation, and when detective tom lang interviewed him. >> a.c. was very cooperative. we ended up actually feeling sorry for him. i think he was used by simpson. >> the standoff could have ended any number of ways and history might have taken a very different course. the trial of the century and the fallout from it might never have happened. we all know what did happen. >> we the jury in the above entitled action find the defendant orenthal james simpson not guilty of the crime of murder. >> thank you, jesus, oh, halleluj hallelujah. >> a little more than a year later after a civil trial, simpson was found responsible
