[ cheers and applause ] >> tonight we will be sharing the stories of the five finalists for this year's cisco youth leadership award. all five set up organizations in their home countries that have impacted positively in their communities and the winner will receive $250,000 towards helping their organization grow and develop. so i want to tell you about the first finalist. priya prakash. in india, diseases like cancer and diabetes are the number one cause of death. with just one doctor for every

11,000 people, health care is an unattainable dream for millions. in 2016 priya set up health set go with the aim of improving health care in india's schools. today, health set go has impacted more than 200,000 indian children across 77 cities and it's become the country's largest health care organization for schools. [ applause ] priya's hope is to reach 1 million children by 2023. the first finalist for the cisco youth leadership award is priya prakash. [ cheers and applause ] >> i don't normally present awards but this guy means a lot to me and this award means a lot to me. this is an artist for over five decades remained so dedicated to his music, remaining unbelievably sexy and to saving the rain forest. and when i was a young man just dreaming about doing the job i get to do, i saw sting looking basically, who's this guy who's a bit nuts and talking about the rain forest? i didn't know what it was and i wouldn't have if not for sting, when they started the rain forest fund. what is climate change and he was way ahead of us all and that's why it's an honor to welcome a very handsome man and brilliant artist who's saving the rain forest more than any of us did, sting. >> millions of acres of rainforest are lost every year. from south america and africa to southeast asia, the lungs of our planet are on fire. 30 years ago, sting and his wife trudy stiler were inspired to start the rainforest fund after learning about the devastating impact its destruction was having on the environment and the indigenous people who rely on its existence. over the last three decades, sting and the foundation have

raised millions of dollars and protected more than 33 million acres of rainforest. their tireless campaigning has helped launch groundbreaking projects that have empowered indigenous communities to lead, putting the protection of their homes and human rights in their own hands. using cutting edge mobile apps and drone technology, the rainforest fund is revolutionizing the way communities are able to record, report, and monitor illegal logging and mining to protect the land they've lived on for centuries. sting has been on the front lines fighting for the planet and three decades later he's still using his voice to inspire action and encourage change. >> please welcome sting. >> thank you. i'm always a little reticent to receive awards that lie outside of the field i normally work in. i'm a musician. so thank you, chris, for making me feel a little more comfortable, accepting acknowledgment from a peer in my own industry. thank you. however, i am a citizen. a citizen of my country, the united kingdom. i'm also, as of this moment, still a citizen of the european union. [ applause ] as well as being a global citizen. as a citizen, of course, i'm honored to receive this award and the opportunity to admit whatever successes, whatever battles we've managed to win in the struggle to save our planet, we may well be losing the war. i was humbled recently by the words of greta thunberg as she addressed the united nations on the issue of climate change.

[ applause ] where on behalf of her generation she rightfully pointed the finger at mine. that whatever we've done, whatever we've tried to accomplish in the struggle, we have not done enough. and so i accept this award with the same humility that i would feel as a schoolboy reading my end of term report card. invariably, it would say the same thing. has worked well, but could do better. thank you, global citizens. thank you, chris. global citizen. and few embody this spirit like the winner of the 2019 world leader award. the eldest of five daughters born to a veterinarian from nigeria and a nurse from liverpool. amina muhammad's life has been nothing short of extraordinary. her passion for education took her from a small primary school on the banks of lake chad to england. after working in the private sector she went on to serve three nigerian presidents, worked with u.n. secretary-general ban ki moon as a special adviser, becoming an instrumental force in development planning, and today she holds the role of deputy secretary-general of the united nations. and did i mention, she's also the mother of six. >> amina mohammed is the driving force behind an amazing road map for the world.

the 17 sustainable development goals, which set out a united nations plan for our planet. she's out there inspiring world leaders to foster peace and ensure that we will end extreme poverty by 2030. >> the first set of goals that address economic, social, and environmental issues in one holistic plan for the world. >> so we're making a call for a decade of action to deliver on these goals. >> amina's leadership is about inclusion. she leads with determination. she leads with courage. >> amina mohammed is a role model for me and for young people around the world. >> tell everyone everywhere how these goals will change the world. >> she represents the hope of so many african women and so many africans inspired to lead to the world to realization of a more equitable planet. >> amina is the perfect person

[ cheers and applause ] today our world, yes, our world is facing many crises. climate change, inequality, injustice, conflict, and yet we have never had so much in our hands to make the world a more peaceful and prosperous place. we even have a road map. the united nations 2030 agenda and the 17 global goals that aim to leave no one behind, especially our women and our youth. we've got ten years to make them

a reality and help to transform our world. we must do that now. i'm humbled, really humbled to accept this award working for the united nations and the world that we want. thank you, global citizens. [ cheers and applause ] >> in communities where the opportunity to learn is often limited, children rarely achieve their full potential. the third finalist for the youth leadership award is haroon yasin. haroon began in the poorest slums of islamabad. his dream is to take the most innovative ideas and scale them to reach the most inaccessible

children to the world. to date, this organization has reached more than 100,000 students and with this award, haroon's goal is to impact 1 million users across pakistan by 2020. [ cheers and applause ] luisa saw the need to support and elevate a mostly female, mostly uneducated community of entrepreneurs in her country. tamu gento, which means we are together, is a free platform that connects and allows microentrepreneurs to develop their skills and guides them toward securing a better future. in just over a year, luisa's platform was able to connect with almost 4,000 microentrepreneurs and her hope with this is to scale the organization, grow her dedicated team and empower thousands more brazilians to achieve their dreams.

malnutrition and other diseases they are vulnerable to during pregnancy. by expanding to other african nations, his dream is to save 15 million lives over the next ten years. [ cheers and applause ] >> over the last ten years, the actions of global citizens on all five continents have driven financial commitments for the world's poor of almost $50 billion. how incredible is that? yes! [ applause ] and next year, global citizen is embarking on its most ambitious campaign to date. in partnership with teneo, global citizen is working to create a decade of action to achieve the sustainable development goals that will culminate on september 26th next year with an historic 10-hour global event.

in central new york. and today it is a global food brand. he has built a billion-dollar business empire while building better lives for his employees. he has championed refugees in marginalized communities in chobani's workforce providing access to continued education and creating a culture of family for those far from their own. [ cheers and applause ] but with a vision that extended beyond his own company, hamdi set up the tent partnership for refugees, an organization which mobilizes the private sector to address the global refugee crisis. take a look. ♪ >> so my name is prakas. i'm originally from nepal. so we wanted to move america for a better life. when i came here, i found everything that i wanted.

>> my name is iliasu. i'm originally from east africa. >> hamdi is an immigrant who came to the united states from turkey who couldn't speak english and is now the ceo and founder of chobani. >> hamdi is a big inspiration to me. it's not because i hear his story our listen to his story. because i've seen it. i see it daily. how fast we're growing. how fast we're helping the community. people always have really high expectation on how it will be in america, but once i get here, the community helps us big time. >> i didn't think the founder of a yogurt company would become one of the most influential people in the world. he brings to bear all of the attributes of a person who would commit their life to something bigger than themselves. so the tent foundation ultimately evolved into the tent partnership. over 100 companies today are on this crusade with hamdi to employ refugees all over the

world. since it started, tent has supported over 200,000 refugees in 34 countries. >> i haven't seen my family for about 12 years, but chobani is to me my nimes right now. >> we are like a community. >> i don't feel like a refugee anymore. that the sole purpose of business is to make money and that business should stay away from the problems of the world. honestly? that's the dumbest idea i've ever heard. [ applause ] companies and citizens must take a side. on climate change, on income inequality, on gun violence, business must lead. and when it comes to the 25 million people who sleep tonight in muddy tents and refugee camps, the mandate for business is simple. don't pity them. hire them. let them be part of community again. because a moment a refugee has a job, that is the moment they stop being a refugee.

the truth is what matters most in business or in life is the difference you make for the others. so this award is a reminder that when we stand together and fight together, kindness and courage will triumph over poverty and hatred every time. thank you so much. thank you. >> the winner of the 2019 global citizen of the year award is a beloved filmmaker whose storytelling has gifted us some of the most iconic films of a generation. but tonight, we honor his other work. >> many of you will know him as the founder of comic relief and red nose day. through that work, he has raised over $1.5 billion for charities around the world and supported and inspired a generation of activists like me. >> tonight, we honor the incredible richard curtis. ♪ >> richard made an extraordinary

influence in creating some of the most successful television comedy. he became a figure on the international film stage with four weddings and a funeral and knotting hill and "love actually." ♪ >> yeah, richard's a romantic. he's got this idea about human behavior and the way we should behavior to each other, which informs his films. and i think it informs his charity work too. >> he started in britain, comic relief which has become a thing in america, too. raised gigantic sums of money. >> tonight, live from new york city, it's the first of red nose day in america. >> the last few years, i've worked with him on another project dear to his heart which is the united nations sustainable goals. >> we need to fight global inequality end extreme poverty and respect our planet. >> he believes you are a good person. you watching, you listening are a good person who wants any

all children are as precious as yours and mine. and all men and women are our brothers and sisters. i'm a great optimist, and there's a reason for optimism, and that reason is sustainable development goals signed by every leader in the world, every country in 2015, and they're a really cracking good plan, and they are the only plan, and they're something that i think we must all fight for. all i want is for all of you to be global citizens next year and to really demand from everyone you engage with from your friends, from yourself, politicians and businesspeople, to really fight for those goals. there's an old folk song which

goes, every breath you take, every move you make, we'll be watching you. that's what we all have to do.
