prayer rally in tempe, arizona. some scenes from the rally right there. this is the shot of it from overhead. it was at sun devil stadium. it was called the awaken 2020 and it's not necessarily criticism due to his messaging there on stage but perhaps the messaging of the other people who were there on the stage. of course, kanye publicly declared his support for president trump, famously declared, quote, love for him in a 2018 white house meeting. let's talk about all of this and how it's all coming together right now with republican strategist and reverend joe watkins who's joining us right now. reverend watkins, you are here with me. >> how are you? >> good morning. good sunday morning to you. is kanye west trying to help widen the appeal to donald trump to more than just his base? >> i don't know that that's what he's -- i think when he's preaching or when he's performing in a church setting, i think he's about spreading the gospel of christ and not doing
3:56 am
anything political. that's always a challenge. i get invited to preach all the time. when you come to preach us, just share the gospel. we don't want to hear about your political persuasions or about your political thoughts, just preach the good news of the gospel. that's what i think kanye does when he gets invited to these places. >> in the news lately there is talk of evangelical support of trump and kanye very supportive of the president. when it comes to the black votes, nearly 2/3 of black americans say it is a bad time to be black in the united states. is kanye, do you think, in any way trying to bring black voters into the republican party with this platform? does he have any chance of doing this? >> i don't know that kanye's necessarily a republican. i know that he's friendly with president trump, but this is a tough time for black people in the country. if you're african-american like i am, you shouldn't have to worry that a police stop could end up meaning your life and
3:57 am
clearly we know this has happened around the country and it hasn't really been addressed by anybody, certainly represent con or democrat in a national way. so, yeah, this is a tough time for people of color in the country, i understand that feeling because i have the same worries that people of color have everywhere in this country. >> so are we wrong in associating what these events that kanye is holding with trump in general? >> no. i think that everything you've said is pretty much on the level. i think as it relates to african-american voters and african-american christians, there's a divide between black christians and white evangelicals. white evangelicals will probably overwhelmingly vote for president trump. i think in 2020 black christians will vote for whoever the nominee is. that divide is going to continue right through the november election. >> let's talk about this awaken 2020 event in tempe. some people are describing it as being discriminatory towards lgbtq people.
3:58 am
have you heard of anything from this rally, anything that would lead you to believe that it was, in fact, discriminatory? >> no, i haven't heard anything to lead me to believe that. obviously some of the people that were invited. some i think may have been disinvited at the last minute have been very public about their views, but as far as i'm concerned, certainly at the church i serve anybody is welcome to come. we love everybody that walks through the doors. this is god's house. it's not -- churches are supposed to be god's house, not an exclusive club. everybody is welcome. we're supposed to love our neighbor like we love ourselves. >> has your church played any of kanye's songs? >> not yet. he would be welcome -- he's a musical genius. i love his music. >> thank you. appreciate it. reverend watkins, enjoy your sunday. the impeachment trial, point, counter point. we're getting a much better picture of the arguments set to begin this week. uments set to
