first up this hour, closing the gap. two days until the new hampshire primary. and advice not taken. a new report about senators trying to stop the president from firing gordon sondland and the questions about whether other impeachment witnesses could be next. a trouble the new benchmark to stop the spread of the coronavirus as we get new information about people trapped on a cruise ship under quarantine. it's sunday, february 9th. this month is flying by. we have a team following the late fres new hampshire to london b and beijing. >> first, we turn to the race for the white house. the new hampshire primary is tuesday leaving voters 48 hours to decide on a candidate and a the latest poll show it could be a tight race. bernie sanders is leading with 24% followed by pete buttigieg
4:02 am
at 22%. >> the democratic candidates are mostly focusing on new hampshire voters today with events around the state. they ran a long day of campaigning in manchester. they each had a similar message. beat president trump in november. >> this election is a patriotism check. it's a decency check on this president. and what unites us more than anything is that we know that pg a part of america is bigger than the heart of the guy in the white house. >> i'll be damned if i'm going to lose this election to this man. we cannot let it happen. we cannot let it happen. the character of this country is on the ballot. we must defeat donald trump. >> with a president this devisi devisive, we must either be for a revolution or for the status

quo. let's make room for everyone. >> the choice is ours to usher in a fresh new era where our white house can once again be a beacon of light. a beacon of hope. >> people are worried that this fight against donald trump may not be winnable. but i have been winning unwinnable fights all my life. >> let's make america think harder ask move this country forward on tuesday. let's give our kids a future we will be proud to leave to them. >> i know i speak for every candidate is the nevada who wins the democratic nomination. we are going to come together to defeat the most dangerous
4:04 am
president in the history of this country. >> we should only nominate someone who can kick on the economy and i can do it. and we've got to pull together this fantastic, diverse party and i can do it. >> quite a matchup there in new hampshire overnight. let's bring in shaquille brucer. and daniel strauss, senior political reporter with the guardian. both in new hampshire. good morning to both of you, gentlemen. you have upbeen following sande. clearly he has a front runner status, at least based iowa. there on the ground in new hampshire, you get a sense that he's going into tuesday with that front runner status? >> you can really tell he's feels momentum. we saw him on the campaign trail yesterday. as he was going on, he got a little reflective. he talked about 2016 and he said that he thanked the people of new hampshire for the work they
4:05 am
did for him for the lead they gave him and the win in 2016. as we lock to 2020, he's coming into the race in a strong position. you look at the average polls. he's ahead. the latest polls, he still has that lead. the closest contender is mayor pete buttigieg. what we see with pete buttigieg. he's receiving incoming fire from all sides. you heard vice president biden and the video that came out yesterday kind of mocking mayor pete's role as a mayor. amy klobuchar went after him as well. sanders is seeming to join in on the fun at his own attacks saying he's a candidate who is the billionaire's favorite. you're seeing him feel prth good. he's been in a light mood making jokes all along saying he feels momentum and the establishment is fearing a victory that he believes he will have here in the state of new hampshire.
4:06 am
>> the new tracking poll shows sanders in the lead, biden sitting in fourth. what is the state of biden's campaign now? >> reporter: at this point, biden conceded he probably won't do well in new hampshire, similarly to how he did in iowa. and this underscores the importance for biden to do well in south carolina. a state that he anded a advisers say head will do well in and sprung board them into super tuesday. it's surprising how competitive his rivals are compared to him. at the beginning of the cycle, biden was the far away front runner now he's been polling far behind senator sanders and pete buttigieg. >> it seems strange for a kapd to say i don't expect to do well. >> it's very unusual. so shaq mentioned the ad that
4:07 am
came out attacking peboout judg. klobuchar getting in on the debate. here's with what she said. >> it seems delightful sometimes for people to have a newcomer that doesn't have a record. i think this team having experience of getting things done matters. >> so shaq, as the more moderate candidates turn their attention on each other and on buttigieg, why are they not attacking sanders who is technically the front runner here? >> that's a really good question one thing that biden did in that debate, it was kind of a moment he kind of slipped in there. when he said he didn't expect to do well here in new hampshire herks said bernie probably will do well. that's him raising expectations for a candidate like bernie sanders. but as you mentioned, they are kind of letting him go free as
4:08 am
they are having this fight among themselves. talking to some sanders, they are fine with the fight that's going on. i had people send me around and sanders supporters on twitter send around that video that was made by the biden campaign. they liked the fact that that fight is happening because, again, pete buttigieg his chief rival in this state of new hampshire if mayor pete is going down and getting stuck in battles with biden and klobuchar, the sanders campaign is okay with that. we saw that happen with his rise in december. there was a dabt going on there. it was elizabeth warren and other candidates, that's when you saw sanders and his numbers rise a little bit. when he's behind the scenes, thr okay with that. especially in a state like new hampshire where they feel he's in the lead. people are familiar with him ask he thinks he will do well here. >> let's prop up the latest poll numbers once again. because while there's a cluster at the top, i want the you to pay teengs what i'm noticing down there.
4:09 am
joe biden is at 10 public. amy klobuchar, who had moment ut of of the last debate is at 9%. so you potentially have the former vp, the former front runner who could end up on tuesday in fifth place. you get a sense by the next contest after tuesday in nevada that this will whittle down the whole field? >> reporter: yeah, we're sort of seeing that. we have only seen really a competitiveness in four or five candidates. at one point in the cycle, there were two dozen candidates in this field. but at this point, most of the money, most of 8 the poll iing going to the familiar names. buttigieg, and booiden to an extent.
4:10 am
>> thank you both for your time this morning. stay with msnbc weekend. we're going to have live coverage from new hampshire all day long as we count down to tuesday's primary. we have some breaking news to bring you. the coronavirus outreach reaching new heights in a tragic new milestone. >> the virus now claiming more lives than the 2003 sars epidemic in china. more than 813 people have died from coronavirus compared to 774 who were killed after sars nearly 20 years ago. that was over the course of eight months compared to one month with this one. >> there are more than 37,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus around the globe. that number on the rise. joining us, the world health epidemic says it's far from over. what's the chinese government doing the at this stage? >> reporter: there are restrictions that are in place
4:11 am
across the country. some more severe than others. here in beijing there's been the expectation that anyone returning to the city coming back from a vacation, coming back from their hometowns, remember this all started to transpire over the chinese new year here. so they were told by the government they had to stay at home and observe a 14-day quarantine period before going to work. we're seeing temperature checks everywhere. at the grocery store, at the one starbucks that's still open. anywhere you go it seems they are checking their temperature. people are wearing masks. there really is this sense they want to try to contain what's happening here in beijing with the expectation that the numbers could get a bump this week with people going back to work, using mass transit again, being in crowds, which would offer an opportunity for the virus to spread. >> thank you.

it's being called the deadliest mass shooting in thai history. a art sergeant in the military on a shooting rampage. >> it came to an end at a shopping mall where a gunman was shot and killed by police. joining us now there's matt bradley following the development all weekend long. and all of this happened over the course of a 10-hour period. take us through what happened. >> so this shooting spree began yesterday at a military base. the military base that really the gunman was housed. that's where the name of this guy killed his senior officer and then two others. then he stole weapons and an army humvee. he basically tore through the city on a rampage. he fired at several sites including a booudist temple. before he entered that crowded shop iping mall where he met hi

4:14 am
recurring thing where people who are committing mass murders, massive crimes are filming it themselves. >> any response from facebook? >> yeah, facebook denied allegations that he had live streamed his own massacre. there was all this talk that he had live streamed it, which is what happened in new zealand when we had the guy that shot a bunch of people in a mosque. that's not what happened. he did post periodic updates, but facebook said they went and did it in a shuttle way to shut down his profile to keep the images from proliferate iing ard the world. >> matt bradley with the the latest, thank you. >> the fallout from the white house firings, the key question this morning. will there be more? >> who are the senators who told the president not to fire gordon sondland? that's next. ident not to fire gn sondland that's next.

that's a purple heart winner. those dress blues were worn because he served his country in iraq heroically. so did his brother. those were the guys walked out like criminals yesterday. so does right matter? you tell me. >> the purple heart recipient, president trump attacked vindman calling him insubordinate. what do you make of that? >> what i think is these senator who is voted to acquit the president, especially the ones who want us all to know they were troubled by it or concerned about it or who thought the president learned a lesson. what i think is that phoney friends are worst than honest enemi enemies. what we need now is people with some courage. there are apparently no leaders left in the republican party. a bunch of followers. and guys like lieutenant colonel vindman who put it all on the

line first in iraq and then in a hearing room are paying the price. >> you talk about needing some darn courage here. "the new york times" is reporting that a handful of republicans behind closed doors warned trump not to retaliate, told him not to recall gordon sond land. they wrote, the senators were concerned it would look bad for trump to dismiss sondland and look unnecessary since he was talking with senior officials about leaving after the trial. the senators said sondland should be allowed to depart on their own terms. do you think republicans will have the fwuts to speak out geps this publicly? >> i think what you're seeing is pretty obvious. you're seeing vulnerable republicans after the fact try to cover their butts by leaking to "the new york times" they want us all to know they were deeply troubled by this. and even though they took a vote
4:26 am
that could have absolutely guaranteed that vindman would be made to pay the price for their fecklessness, they want us to know they were troubled by it. they are going to continue to escort the president, but they want "the new york times" to know they secretly know it's wrong. spare me. that's what i mean. i don't need phoney off the record after the fact friends. i'd rather have an honest enemy who stook with his president and owned up to what it entails. a friday night massacre of people who were serving their country honorably and spoke the truth. that's pretty stark. it should wake up the rest of us. >> speaking of waking up the rest of us, there are a lot of people, congressman, who felt, especially after the last two weeks, that it was sort of a gut punch for america. all that took place. you guys were the ones that came up with the prosecuted the case

4:34 am
it's a much more small government libertarian party here. and that proved really help ffu for trump. he was able to win here and after that it was really difficult for republicans as we saw to stop his rise to the nomination. in terms of new hampshire and the rest of the country's politics, like much of the rest of the country, you saw organized political resistance to the trump administration and to republican control of the state government. there were women's rallies here just as there were all over the country. and in 2018 democrats did extremely well in the midterm elections. they didn't win the governor's mansion, but they won everything else there is to win in new hampshire. they want control of the executive council and legislature and lots of down ballot races and really that's essentially where the country is as well. we had a midterm election where democrats did well and now we're facing a general election in which trump is seeking a second

term. >> you and your colleagues collected 17 years of data from events finding that front runner candidates are visit issing new hampshire less. when they do, they do more town halls and fewer meet and greets with voters. how does that weigh on the new hampshire electorate and their decision? >> well, this has been a change that's happened slowly over time, so i don't know any individual voter is necessarily swayed by the type of events candidates are having. but it does reflect that candidates are changing the way they run for president. the better known candidates are focusing less oncoming to the the early states 40 or 50 times the way they might have done once upon a time and running more nationalized campaigns we have seen presidential debates held a all over the country, not just in iowa and nevada and south carolina. and it's those lesser known candidates who are putting everything on retail politics.

government and what gets done there. and biden surrogates have come out to clarify they weren't attacking local government with the ad, but they were questioning what pete buttigieg has managed to get done on that front. and those are things that are likely to continue on the trail. klobuchar has been someone that criticized pete buttigieg on his experience and boout judge going back to the biden ad, the campaign did release a statement yesterday. i want to read the last line of it. because it was very interesting what they said. they said the vice president's decision to run this ad speaks more to where he currently stands in the race than it does about pete's perspective as a mayor and a veteran. and so if you remember pre-iowa, it was buttigieg who was calling joe biden out by name and questioning his thought process about whether or not it's time for america to take a risk on a candidate. now yes see the tables have flipped as pete buttigieg has come out of iowa on top with joe
