speech to his largest crowd yet. we are going to get a live report. >> plus, big news for joe biden, and it is not just a second place finish in nevada. the big name endorsement he is set to receiverings, the dow se to drop more than 350 points as cases of coronavirus surge outside of china. good monday morning, everybody, it is february 24th. i'm yasmin vossoughian alongside ayman mohyeldin. we begin with president trump's first trip abroad since his acquittal from the senate impeachment trial. the president and first lady melania trump arrived in india today, the world's largest democracy, to a two-day state vis branded as namaste president trump. despite the fanfare and warm relations the u.s. and india
1:01 am
have so far been unable to resolve their differences over trade. prime minister mody and president trump are still expected to announce new agreements on the purchase of u.s. military equipment and possible energy cooperation against the backdrop of china's growing influence. prior to the trip trump administration officials said that the president is also expected to address alleged human rights abuses in cashmere and relay concerns about the treatment of religious minorities in that country. this is president trump's first visit to india as president and fourth consecutive u.s. president to visit that country. >> joining us from new delhi, india, kelly o'donnell. good to have you with us on this monday morning. what is the agenda of the president over this two-day state vis id. a pretty remarkable one as far as the fanfare. >> reporter: this is very much about spectacle and scale and the relationship between president trump and prime
1:02 am
minister mody. really overriding more of a policy substance. they are talking about things that you outlined, defense spending where the u.s. will sell about $3 billion worth of military equipment to india, there are still questions about resolving trade differences, especially when it comes to tariffs and so forth. so there are policy things to discuss, but far more important than that is the spectacle that certainly prime minister modi has tried to create for president trump to reinforce the binding ties between the u.s. and india that have endured for a long time but really represented in the strong personalities of these two leaders. we have seen a great deal of effort put in by india to prepare for this visit where the president had more than 110,000 people in the new cricket stadium there, the largest cricket stadium in the world to give the president that scale of crowd that so often attracts his attention. in addition to that the president and first lady will
1:03 am
see one of the great sites of india, the taj mahal, that's happening today. they paid a visit to one of the really important historical homes of mahatma gandhi and a place for hindu study. that was a much softer in terms of appearance visit but very important certainly here and there will be the state dinner and a lot of the official meetings but really think in terms of the visuals that have been established by india, knowing what that means to president trump as a real important backdrop for this two-day visit which is about emphasizing these two large democracies. it is also a message to china in terms of the power relationship between the u.s. and india, but it is so much about the relationship and how that's reflected in the policies and politics of both nations. ayman, yasmin. >> nbc's kelly o'donnell live for us in india. thank you so much. now to breaking news in the race for president, two people with firsthand knowledge tell nbc's craig melvin that

congressman james clyburn will endorse joe biden at an event on wednesday. the highly coveted endorsement is a major boost ahead of saturday's south carolina primary which is viewed as a must win for the former vice president. this also comes with news from nevada with nearly 88% of the vote in, nbc news projects joe biden will, in fact, finish in second place right now at 21%. quite a distance from bernie sanders who powered to a victory with a diverse coalition of voters now at 47%. we will get more in on all these numbers in just a moment. first more from congressman jim clyburn who spoke out before we learned he would endorse biden. in fact, clyburn explaining what biden did wrong in the lead up to iowa and new hampshire and why he predicts things will be different when biden takes the debate stage in south carolina tomorrow evening. >> in the first two contests people from south carolina, like around the country, were looking
1:05 am
at this and i've heard from a lot of people that they thought that joe biden could have done more to engage during the debates, thought he could have done more to say why he would be deserving, and so i think he suffered from that because he didn't do enough, but i do believe that a lot of that had to do with other candidates. i think that at that time he had, what, 17 or 18 people on the stage, kamala harris i think unnerved him a little bit with her request he. >> right. >> so all of this changes when you only have six people. so the dynamics on tuesday night will be totally different from what they were on those two contestes. >> and as we did mention senator bernie sanders won saturday's
1:06 am
nevada caucuses in commanding fashion and with a broad coalition of support, dominated among hispanics winning over 50%, won more white voters than any other candidate, 29%, he was second only to joe biden amongst black voters, 27% there, he won 49% of voters who described themselves as very liberal. he tied biden with voters who described themselves as moderate conservative at 24%. he dominated amongst young voters, winning 65% of voters under 30 and 57% of voters under 45. he also dominated among voters who say they prefer a candidate who agrees with them on the i wish issues and placed first among voters who say their priority is to beat the president of the united states. president trump. here is sanders addressing his supporters after that sweeping victory. >> trump and his friends think they are going to win this
1:07 am
electi election. they think they're going to win this election by dividing our people up based on the color of their skin or where they were born or their religion or their sexual orientation. we are going to win because we are doing exactly the opposite, we're bringing our people together. >> 2020 democratic front runner senator bernie sanders outlined his foreign policy approach in a recent interview including whether he would meet with north korean leader kim jong-un. >> on foreign policy, you said you believe in diplomacy, you're concerned donald trump is going to get us into an unnecessary war. are there situations where you believe military action is warranted. >> of course i do. you know, hopefully as rare as possible, but, yeah, we have the best military in the world. >> what would your criteria be for military action? >> threats against the american
1:08 am
people to be sure, threats against our allies, i believe in nato, i believe that the united states, everything being equal, should be working with other countries in alliance, not doing it alone. >> if china took military action against taiwan is that something that you would -- >> that's something -- again, i think we have to make it clear to countries around the world that we will not sit by and allow invasions to take place, absolutely. >> would you meet with kim jong-un? >> yeah. i mean, i've criticized for trump for everything under the sun, but meeting with people who are antagonistic is to me not a bad thing to do. i think unfortunately trump went into that meeting unprepared, i think it was a photo opportunity and did not have the kind of the diplomatic work necessary to make it a success, but i do not have a problem with sitting down with adversaries all over the world. >> sanders also defended past
1:09 am
comments he made about former cuban leader fidel castro. >> we're very opposed to the authoritarian nature of cuba, but it's unfair to simply say everything is bad. you know, when fidel castro came into office he had a massive literacy program. is that a bad thing, even though fidel castro did it. >> a lot of dissidents in prison didn't -- >> that's right, and we condemn that. unlike donald trump, let's be clear, i do not think that kim jong-un is a good friend. i don't trade love letters with a murdering dictator. vladimir putin, not a great friend of mine. >> let's talk about some of this. joining us now from charleston, south carolina, nbc news 2020 embed following the bernie sanders campaign gary germbach. >> good morning. >> by saturday night after nevada bernie sanders already moving on to texas, skipping right over south carolina it seems. what does this say about the campaign's strategy heading into super tuesday which is just
1:10 am
around the corner? >> that's right. well, in a first -- last few days leading up to the nevada caucus bernie sanders his campaign really was not worried about the state of nevada. he had spent months and months there in the highly populated areas of las vegas and reno, even in the lesser populated areas of henderson, nevada, talking to voters, getting out there, holding town halls, taking questions from voters. it shows he was up more than 20 points to former vice president biden so clearly that ended up working out for them. he got a head start on super tuesday states by heading to the state of texas, he held four massive rallies this weekend in major cities across the state of texas and so gone are the days now of talking to voters in terms of answering their questions one-on-one, more of a town hall format, these were major rallies with more than 25,000 supporters across the state in total over the four rallies. coming out i see senator bernie sanders. >> i know that, gary, joe biden will soon receive that coveted
1:11 am
endorsement of congressman jim clyburn. how has his support among african-americans changed since bernie sanders and pete buttigieg claimed victories in those early states, i should say bernie sanders claiming victory in those early states, pete buttigieg leading in the delegate count in iowa? >> yeah, that's right. so in the lead up to iowa and new hampshire while most of the candidates were in iowa and new hampshire, senators are surrogates, nina turner, cordell west, phillip ago knew, they were spending time in south carolina talking to the voters and finding out the issues that mattered to them and focusing on criminal justice reform and their housing plan. that's how senator sanders i think is really succeeding here in south carolina and closing that gap between former vice president biden and senator sanders himself. >> gary, what is sanders' main strategy heading into super tuesday so that he could feasibly walk away from that
1:12 am
pivotal day in this primary process and make voters believe that he is running away with this potential nomination? >> senator sanders has been on message or i think more than 40 years now and is staying on that message, not getting distracted by some of the other stories in the news but staying on message and focusing on the issues that americans care about, things like medicare for all, things like college for all which is one of senator sanders' signature plans. he is also using south carolina and he used nevada as a jumping point for other campaign events around the region. so he will be heading to this week he will be heading to virginia, he will be heading to north carolina and all across here in south carolina making the point that this is important to him, this is what matters and the american people need to hear what he has to say. >> gary, live in south carolina, we will talk to you again in just a little bit. still ahead, much more ahead on the race for president including mike bloomberg reversing his decision on those nondisclosure agreements after

u.s. district court judge amy berman jackson the judge that sentenced roger stone to more than three years in prison last week has rejected stone's request that she recuse herself from a potential new trial. the motion argued that jackson could could not impartially relate the request over juror misconduct. they allege her ability to remain impartial. she said the jurors had served with integrity. jackson defended her remark and said it fell short of the evidence of bias that would require a judge to step aside. she wrote in part, quote, judges cannot be biased and need not be disqualified if the views they express are based on what they learned while doing the job they

were appointed to do. stone's motion for a new trial remains pending before jackson with the defense's next filing on the issue due later today. let's get a check on your weather with nbc meteorologist bill karins. >> good morning. welcome back. we are watching for the most part a couple weak storms this week, we are not going to have one big huge one, but a lot of active weather out there. you will need the umbrella often in the ohio valley and southeast. the storm is over the top of oklahoma city and wichita, this is a shield of heavy rain, a soaking rain kansas city and st. louis to start your day. we still have light rain traveling through areas of southeast, it's definitely an umbrella day through much of the southeast and the ohio valley. anyone traveling the airports today looks like rain, maybe foggy conditions in atlanta, could have possible delays, delays nashville, st. louis with moderate rain, it will approve a little later in the afternoon.
1:18 am
new orleans could have scattered storms and chicago you're going to go for rain later on tonight and tomorrow is when you go rain over to snow. it's amazing we haven't had a lot of big snowfall forecasts this february and that continues. just this little narrow sliver from the quad city south wards, northern portions of missouri and then this little stripe through davenport, looks like towards milwaukee to chicago, we could end up with 1 to 3 inches of snow, at most a few spots could pick up 4 to 5 inches. this will be primarily during the day tuesday, heading into tuesday night and that will be about it. your week ahead forecast, we have rain in the southeast, snowy weather in the northern rockies. some will spread out into the plains. we have one more beautiful nice day for the northeast today, could be 60 degrees in boston this afternoon. how enjoyable is that? you don't get many february days like that. as we go into your wednesday our storm system lingers with rainy weather over areas of the northeast, still a little bit of snow on the backside.
1:19 am
by the time we get to thursday and friday that clears out and much colder air will arrive. looks like the end of this week much calmer, more winterlike as temperatures will tumble throughout areas of the great lakes and northeast. we have one week left in february, we are on pace for an extremely warm february as we've noticed. we may come close to the warmest february ever recorded, areas like boston, new york, you know, no snow and warm temperatures. >> i have to say after arriving back from somewhere that was hovering around negative 15 when i got up in the morning and went to sleep at night it was nice to have 60 degrees yesterday when i arrived back at the airport. >> strange, though. >> yes, very strange. thank you, bill. >> thanks, bill. still ahead, major developments in the coronavirus as cases surge outside of china with some countries now closing their borders. we will have the very latest on that. - when i noticed

you know, because i'm here in washington i want to talk specifically for just a minute at the top about a threat that is coming our way and it's a big fleet, not a tall one, but a big one, michael bloomberg. >> so that was senator elizabeth warren taking a dig at mike bloomberg's height on saturday. meanwhile, the billionaire has agreed to release three women from nondisclosure agreements with his company. in a statement issued on friday bloomberg said officials at bloomberg lp identified three
1:23 am
ndas over a 30-plus year span related to complaints about comments they said i had made. it goes on to say if any of them want to be released from their nda so that they can talk about those allegations they should contact the company and they will be given a release. plume berg added that under his tenure going forward the company would no longer offer confidentiality agreements to resolve sexual harassment claims. the move is a stark reversal from the former new york city mayor's stance at last week's democratic debate where he took heat for preemptively shutting down such an idea, but bloomberg's attempt at transparency has not impressed his fellow democratic candidates. take a listen. >> it's just not good enough. michael bloomberg needs to do a blanket release so that all women who have been muzzled by nondisclosure agreements can step up and tell their side of the story in terms of what
1:24 am
michael bloomberg has done. >> how can you run against donald trump, the ultimate glander, and have 2, 5, 10, 20, whatever it is, nondisclosure agreements with people who i guess allege had harassed them or had some -- anyway, i just know how -- you have to be transparent. there is no option. >> now to the very latest on the coronavirus. stock markets are set to open drastically lower today as the number of cases of the deadly virus outside of china surged over the weekend. as of yesterday 79,000 cases of the virus have been recorded in at least 29 different countries. the president of south korea raised his country's infectious disease alert to red after a recorded seven deaths and more than 760 infections up from 30. italy recorded 152 cases of the coronavirus and at least three
1:25 am
deaths. yesterday pakistan and turkey temporarily closed their borders with iran after the country announced that cases of the coronavirus have been recorded there as well. now, this morning iran announced 50 people -- 50 people have died in the any alone, that is up from 12 recorded deaths in the country just hours before. in mainland china the government announced there are more than 77,000 cases with just under 2,600 deaths. on friday a world health organization leader said it was worrisome that the virus has spread to countries with no clear link to china and that, quote, the window of opportunity is still there, but our window of opportunity is narrowing. we need to act quickly before it closes completely. >> startling statistics there. still ahead, the latest from india as president trump wraps his speech before a massive crowd, likely his largest ever. plus the big news from in the race for president as we learn joe biden will get the highly coveted endorsement from congressman jim clyburn ahead of

welcome backs, everyone, i'm ayman mohyeldin alongside yasmin vossoughian. we begin this half hour with president trump's first prip abroad since his acquittal from the senate impeachment trial. the president and first lady arrived in india today, the world's largest democracy for a two-day state visit branded as namaste trump. despite the fanfare and warm relations the u.s. and india have so far been unable to

resolve their differences over trade. prime minister modi and president trump still expected to announce new agreements on the purchase of u.s. military equipment and possible energy cooperation against the backdrop of china's growing influence. prior to the trip trump administration officials said that the president is also expected to address alleged human rights abuses in carb mere and relay concerns about the treatment of religious minorities in india. this is the fourth consecutive visit by a sitting u.s. president to visit that country. now to breaking news in the race for president. >> two people can firsthand knowledge telling nbc's craig melvin that congressman jim clyburn will endorse joe biden at an event on wednesday, the highly coveted endorsement is a major boost for the biden campaign ahead of saturday's south carolina primary, which is viewed as a must win for the former vice president. this also comes with news from nevada with nearly 88% of the vote in nbc news projecting biden will finish in second place. right now at 21%, quite a

enough, but i do believe that a lot of that had to do with other candidates. i think that at that time he had, what, 17 or 18 people on the stage, kamala harris, i think, unnerved him a little bit with her question. >> right. >> so all of this changes when you only have six people. so the dynamics on tuesday night will be totally different from what they were on those two contestes. >> and as we mentioned, senator bernie sanders won saturday's nevada caucuses with a broad coalition of support. he dominated among hispanics, winning 51%, he won more white voters than any other candidate, second only to joe biden among black voters, he won 49% of voters who described themselves as very liberal, he tied biden with voters who described themselves as moderate or conservative. he ran away with the young voters winning 65% of voters under 30, 57% under 45, he also

dominated among voters who say they prefer a candidate who agrees with them on the issues and he placed first among voters who say their priority is to beat trump. here is sanders addressing his supporters after that sweeping victory. >> trump and his friends think they are going to win this election -- they think they're going to win this election by dividing our people up based on the color of their skin or where they were born or their religion or their sexual orientation. we are going to win because we are doing exactly the opposite, we're bringing our people together. >> so while the goal for congressional democrats is to defeat the president in november, some are expressing concern that having senator bernie sanders at the top of the ticket may hamper their efforts to retain the house and possibly
1:34 am
win control of the senate. despite a strong showing in the primaries some in the party say sanders' policies may be too liberal for the broader electorate and so actually drive away some urban voters who favor democrats back in the 2018 midter midterms, particularly in those divided districts. even his political rivals have spoken out about the potential consequences of and is aers presidency. watch this. >> do you think that bernie sanders is capable of beating donald trump? >> i think it would be -- i like whoever the democrat is to beat donald trump, i would vote for mickey mouse against donald trump. >> sure, but do you think he can win? >> the answer is i don't think he can beat donald trump and keep a democratic senate, get a democratic senate and keep a democratic house. >> before we rush to nominate senator sanders in our one shot to take on this president, let us take a sober look at what is at stake for our party, for our
1:35 am
values and for those with the most to lose. there is so much on the line. senator sanders believes in an inflexible ideological revolution that leaves out most democrats, not to mention most americans. >> and senator bernie sanders ex core sheeted russia on friday after being briefed that the kremlin is helping his presidential campaign as part of an effort to interfere with the democratic primary in the 2020 election. >> mr. putin is a thug, he is an autocrat, he may be a friend of donald trump's, he is not a friend of mine. the american people, whether you're democrats, republicans, independents are sick and tired of seeing other countries interfere in our elections. the intelligence comment has been clear about it. they did interfere in 2016, the
1:36 am
intelligence community is telling us they are interfering in this campaign right now in 2020. what i say to mr. due tin if elected president trust me you are not going to be interfering in american elections. >> the "washington post" report on friday u.s. officials have briefed president trump, other lawmakers and sanders that russians are helps his campaign. this comes as trump was criticized for pushing out joseph mcguire because he was angry that lawmakers on capitol hill were briefed that moscow is interfering to aid his reelection. trump touched on the issue at a las vegas rally on friday. >> i see these phonies, the do nothing democrats, they said today that putin wants to be sure that trump gets elected. here we go again. i was told that was happening. i was told a week ago, they said, you know, they're trying to start a rumor. it's dids informati it's disinformation. do nothing democrats. that putin wants to make sure i get elected.
1:37 am
listen to this. so doesn't he want to see who the democrat is going to be? wouldn't he rather have, let's say, bernie? wouldn't he rather have bernie? >> trump on twitter yesterday accused adam schiff of leaking information that russia was helping sanders. schiff was denied the accusations. national security adviser robert o'brien says he's seen no evidence that russia is seeking to aid the president's reelection but said reports that russia is trying to boost bernie sanders' presidential campaign were, quote, no surprise. >> there are these reports that they want bernie sanders to get elected president. that's no surprise. he honey mooned in moscow. the president trump has rebuilt the american military to an extent we haven't seen since ronald reagan. i don't think it's any surprise that russia or china or iran would want somebody other than president trump. >> have you seen analysis from the intelligence community that
1:38 am
shows that one of their aims is to help president trump. >> i haven't seen that. i've seen the reports from that briefing at the intel committee, i wasn't there, but i've seen no intelligence that suggests that. i've also heard from the briefers that that's not what they intended the story to be. so, look, who knows what happened over at the house and the intelligence committee, but i haven't seen any evidence that russia is doing anything to attempt to get president trump reelected. >> all right. joining us now once again from charleston, south carolina, nbc news 2020 embed following the bernie sanders campaign gary grumbach. some democrats have begun to voice their concerns about a senator sanders nomination as you saw from those clips from pete buttigieg as well as joe biden. what has been the response from his campaign? >> so senator sanders is a poll rising figure for sure. he is often talking about taking on the democratic establishment, he also often says that, you know, he welcomes the hatred of billionaires.
1:39 am
this weekend in texas he held four rallies with a little bit of a different tone after winning nevada. he is saying he is calling for unity and really talking about how, you know, my family needs to help your family, your family needs to help my family. of course, this comes along with senator sanders' plans. it is important to recognize the difference between unity and compromise. senator sanders is all for medicare for all, that's not something he's going to compromise on, however, he is calling for everyone to be together and to unify under one democratic nominee. >> gary, let's talk russia for a moment. we heard from senator sanders directly addressing vladimir putin with regards to these allegations that russia is once again trying to interfere in the election. how, though, has this sanders campaign reacted to reports that russia may be attempting to help bernie sanders get the nomination? >> yeah, that's right. so i will pull back the curtain a little bit for you. we were on the plane with senator sanders as the news broke on friday, as we landed he came out to the tarmac, spoke to
1:40 am
reporters and told us that, hey, vladimir putin is not a friend of his. he called him an autocrat as we heard and he says he does not want any of vladimir putin's help, he does not want any of russia's help and he was serious about this, taking a very strong stance, no the mincing any words about the topic. >> what would a win for senator bernie sanders be in south carolina beyond just the obvious coming in first place? i mean, everyone has been talking about south carolina being a fire wall and resuscitating joe biden's campaign with this big endorsement from jim clyburn. do you get a sense from what you've covered so far that the sanders campaign would be pleased with a second place finish in south carolina? >> i think they would be hugely pleased. something senator sanders says on the trail often is that he often before iowa he said we're going to win iowa, we're going to win new hampshire, we're going to do very well in south carolina. he never thought he was going to win south carolina. this could be very close. it was certainly former vice president joe biden's state to lose. it will be interesting this week as we have the debate coming up,
1:41 am
town halls coming up and canned at that time all over the state campaigning for the south carolina votes. >> gary, just give us a quick look at the sanders campaign days after south carolina as we head and march towards super tuesday. >> yeah, that's right. so super tuesday he's using south carolina kind of as a jumping point here. he will be heading to virginia, north carolina this week, those are super tuesday states, he was just in texas for four massive rallies. gone are the days of these coffee shop events where he's talking to voters one-on-one, answering questions. these are big rallies. this weekend he spoke to more than 25,000 texans across the state and he is planning on doing the same across virginia and north carolina and here in south carolina as well. >> all right. gary grumbach live for us in south carolina. thank you. >> thanks, gary. still ahead, a potential conflict of interest for president trump's new spy chief that could leave the acting intelligence director vulnerable to blackmail.

welcome back. according to a new report president trump's new acting intelligence director richard grenell used to do consulting work for a foreign politician that the united states accused of corruption. pro publica reports grenell, quote, used to do consulting work on behalf of an eastern european oligarch who is now a fugitive and recently barred from entering the u.s. under anti-corruption sanctions imposed last month by the state department. in 2016 grenell wrote several articles defending the politician. he also did not register under the foreign agent has registration act which requires people to disclose work in the u.s. on behalf of foreign politicians. an attorney for grenell declined to say what his paid consulting

work involved but said he did not have to register because he was not working at the direction of a foreign power. that act is the same law that trump's former campaign manager paul manafort and former campaign manager sophomoric gates were convicted of violating. supreme court justice sonia sotomayor have accused her conservative colleagues of bias in favor of the trump administration. sotomayor issued a dissenting opinion on friday in the case of wolf versus cook county illinois after the court ordered to uphold the -- such as medicaid and food stamps. in his dissent justice sotomayor wrote that the, quote, decision follows a now familiar pattern. it is hard to say what is more troubling that the government would seek this relief as a matter of course or that the court would grant it. addressing her conservative colleagues the justice added,
