of vermont as well as colorado and utah. sand rs is also leading right now in california. the state with the most delegates. but the race is too rl to call with 45% of the vote in. sanders has 32% to biden's 23%. the state of maine is too close to call with 91% of the vote in. biden leads sanders, 34% to 33%. when it comes to delegates, biden is now the front runner. that's a math and count of the total delegates so far. 420 to bernie's dlsh 435, we just updated it. to bernie sanders 343. warren at 37. >> so joe biden took to the stage in los angeles last night before polls closed and celebrated his vikt i ctorievic. watch this. >> it's a good night. tz a good night.

it seems to be getting better. they don't call it super tuesday for nothing. >> a few days ago the press declared the campaign dead. and then came south carolina and they had something to say about it. and when us you got to super tuesday it would be over. it may be over for the other guy. i'm here to report we are very much alive. and make no mistake about it. this campaign will send donald trump packing. people are talking about a revolution. we started a movement. we increased turnout. the turnout turned out for us. >> there was some drama amist all the wins.

at one point protesters rushing the stage, as you can see coming within feet of the former vice president and his wife. the body man carry iing that proit'ser off the stage. and then moments later a second protester storming on to the stage. she was carried off by biden campaign aid. >> super tuesday victories were thanks to his support among black voters in several states. according to nbc news exit polling, black voters were a key voting group for biden fueling his win in south carolina and also true in virginia where 63% of african-american voters said they voted for the former vice president. 62% of tennessee's black voters also cast ballots for biden and in alabama, biden received 70% of the the backing of black voters in that state. biden claimed a significant portion of the black vote in southern states, where almost two-thirds vote forward him yesterday. >> and bernie sanders spoke to

reassessing whether or not to stay in the presidential race. senior campaign officials telling nbc news that bloomberg will meet with top advisers in new york this morning to make a decision after pouring more than $500 million of his own money into the campaign. the former new york city mayor failed to meet the 15% threshold required to win delegates in most super tuesday states. but according to the data, bloomberg has already invest eda $7 million ad buy primarily across states voting in the coming weeks like florida, with he was last night. he currently has no public events scheduled for today, as he makes his decision. >> after finishing in third place in her home state of massachusetts, elizabeth warren and her campaign are charting their next steps. according to nbc news, team warren appears to be tight lipped. staffers seem on edge and there are signs that the campaign is feeling the pressure. and tensions are mounting among progress i-s as the moderate wing of the democratic party begins to unite.

plolitical reports angered the sanders camp as she vows to go all the way the to the convention. tweeting, last night, imagine if the progressives consolidated last night like the moderates consolida consolidated, who would have won? warren held a rally in detroit without once mentioning super tuesday. >> but prediction has been a terrible business. and the pundits have gotten it wrong over and over. so here's my advice. cast a vote that will make you proud. cast a vote from your heart. and vote for the person you think will make the best president of of the united states of america.

i'm in this race because i believe i will make the best president of the united states. >> joining us now from north carolina, david gur. two different realities this morning if you're inside the booiden camp or the sanders camp. tough decisions for bloomberg and warren ahead. let's start with the results of us super tuesday and how they may have impacted some of these campaigns starting with joe biden's camp. what does this mean for bernie sanders going forward? it seems in the course of a day, the momentum has shifted from joe biden now being the front runner and bernie sanders now being the underdog. >> reporter: it's fascinating to be here this was contested territory for a lot of democrats who looked at polling and it was a three-rayway race between joe biden, bernie sanders and michael bloomberg, who as you mentioned spent so much money here on infrastructure and advertising. in the end this race was projected quickly after the polls closed. joe biden with a pretty

resounding victory here in north carolina. you see his camp citing what happened in south carolina as a really catalytic thing. he winning that state gave him momentum that changed things here in north carolina and throughout the south and parts of the midwest as well. they are going to try to capitalize on that going forward and i was struck listening to that tape you were playing there of bernie sanders in vermont last night drawing the contrast between his record and yb jb's record over the last few years. and really that's the benefit of having this narrowed field. michael bloomberg out of the way, at least as the two front runners. michael bloomberg even further back naps what we're going to see here in the next few days is bernie sanders, the senator from vermont, drawing that contrast and joe biden having to respond to the critiques from the senator from vermont. >> david, we have talked the last couple days leading up to super tuesday about some of the major democrats coming in behind the former vice president,

coalescing and bolstering the endorsement from jim clyburn. also taking a look at exit polls from last night, especially in north carolina, the overwhelming amount of support for the former vice president has come from african-american voters, especially in the south, is ses stounding. >> they was very confident in even as his campaign was not doing well in the weeks leading up to super tuesday. he was convinced he was going to get the support of black voters, and we did see that. when you look at how it shook out by percentages, he got 6 out of 10 black votes here in north carolina. so that confidence was met by the reality among black voters. you look at the will tea knee vote, it was a different story. he didn't do as well with them throughout the states in super

tuesday. there's actually subtle investigator lining for bernie sanders. you look at how he performed in texas in 2016. he really struggled with latino voters. he got 30% of the vote in texas. this year it was a different story. as you pour through the data that you mentioned, you see the reason for that is when you look at latino voters in texas and other super tuesday states, they say that health care is the most important issue to them. they are very warm to the proposal that bernie sanders introduced for medicare for all. you couple that for what he said about tuition-free college. for a lot of them, bernie sanders seems to be their candidate. so again, we haven't a senatnar field here. we're going to see much more of a contrast drawn between joe biden and bernie sanders. >> david, we'll let you keep looking through those polls. still ahead, we have so much more to talk about include iing

when i was asked what was my intent with the endorsement, i said i was trying to create a surge for joe biden. i knew that just to win south carolina was not good enough. he need ed to win it big. and just even winning it big would not be good enough unless it was done in such a way that the people in north carolina and virginia and people down b in alabama, tennessee, i followed up by endorsement with visits to north carolina. and then i did robocalls into

tennessee, into alabama, arkansas and north carolina. and so i feel that people got the message. >> a lot of folks basically saying joe biden is where he is because of that man. that was congressman jim clyburn of south carolina. he was reacting to biden's big wins last night in the role he played in all of it. not only in his home state, but across the south in which biden performed well. >> we'll get to more results from super tuesday. but 24 hours we had tragedy to report out of tennessee. today we're getting a better picture of just how devastating that tornado was that struck nashville and other parts. 24 people were killed. we'll go now to meteorologist bill karins for an update on that. we were saying yesterday, we were going on the air, initial reports two people dead. unfortunately, that number has skyrocketed. >> we knew a tornado had gone

through the major city. i think it was an ef-2 or ef-3. that rarely ever happens. so we had two fatalities, but what we learned was in a rural area, they had 18 people die in a two-mile stretch. and there were children that per you sha ished this their homes too. it was one of the worst tornadoes in tennessee's history. it was one thunderstorm that produced three or four tornadoes from one thunderstorm. it was incredible damage. it was very strong tornado. i think the winds were at least 165 miles per hour. so they are saying 77 people are missing. a lot of those people they survived and left the area, but they are still trying to find that many people so the death toll could go up. we have a severe weather threat today too. we have a watch over southern mississippi and alabama. so our storm system and our active weather in the south is

still continuing. we have a severe thunderstorm watch in here in areas of west texas. so all through the south, numerous areas with a ton of rain. this tornado watch includes jackson, mississippi. there's no warnings right now. there's no one that's heading into their basements or safe rooms seeking shelter like we were this time yeed. but these storms could produce isolated tornadoes. the other threat it's been so wet in areas of the south that flash flood iing is going to be problem too. we have 15 million people under flash flood watches from baton rouge to birmingham, montgomery, atlanta. so throw some airport delays inside this also. as far as the rainfall totals go, it looks like by the time we're done with this, some of these areas of the brighter oranges here and reds, we have another two to three inches of rain. we'll have a flash flood threat and then all the water runs into the rivers. we'll proebl get some river flooding problems. the cut offline is charlotte

south wards and jacksonville, florida, north wards. so your forecast today, a nice day in the midatlantic. enjoy the 60s in d.c. but then enjoy the 41 in minneapolis. colder air will come in. we'll talk about snow in the great lakes throughout thursday and friday. one of the worst tornadoes in tennessee history. and just imagine that community. it's a small community. 18 lives lost in a 2-mile stretch. >> i think two important things to mention. the governor of tennessee declaring a state of emergency and president trump going to be heading there later this week to visit the site of the d devastation. divided supreme court yesterday increased the ability of states to prosecute undocumented immigrants and other people who do not have work authorization in the u.s. if they provide false social security numbers or other information on job applications. with the court's conservative justices in the majority, the 5-4 ruling overturned a 2017 supreme court decision that voided the convictions of three

welcome back, everybody. we begin this half hour with the results from super tuesday. it was a stunning night for joe biden. the former vice president swept the south. the projected winner in nine states. with landslide victories in alabama, arkansas, tennessee and oklahoma. he also won minnesota, the delegate-rich state of texas d elizabeth warren's home state of massachusetts. sanders won his home state of vermont as well as colorado and utah. sanders is also leading right now in california, the state with the most delegates.

sanders. so you would naturally think sanders would take the state of myrtle beach. yet you had the major endorsement from amy klobuchar. how crucial was her endorsement for biden's chances in winning in her state? >> reporter: exactly. amy klobuchar flew down to dallas on monday to announce her endorsement of joe biden and saying that she would be behind him. what you saw here in the results in minnesota last night was a 12-point victory for joe biden. and even greater context to that was four years ago here when it was hillary clinton and bernie sanders, bernie sanders won minnesota by 22%. last night i was talking with some klobuchar staffers here in minneapolis who were elate d by the results and suggesting to me that amy klobuchar intends to hit the trail again here later this week for joe biden believing that that consolidation of support around him, thad like to believe their senator here from minnesota played a wibig role in his abily

to win one of at least nine states here on super tuesday. >> let's look at it from the sanders perspective. he won in 2016 when he was running against hillary clinton. he lost yesterday or at least certainly the delegates are going towards joe biden for the time being. what is the sanders camp saying about how it went down in minnesota? what happened? >> reporter: this is a place they won by 22% in 2016. as part of sanders appeal, they could beat donald trump in november. winning places like the midwest back. minnesota went narrowly to hillary clinton over donald trump in 2016. so this hurts. you go to iowa. he didn't win in iowa. you go to minnesota, didn't win in minnesota. sudden issenly these are places where the map was important for him. and joe biden is able to suggest he's puling support from a broad cross section of this country, at least geographically. >> let's talk about senator

elizabeth warren, as we were just playing sound from her speaking. are there any signs out there as to what her next steps might be? we have heard from inside elizabeth warren's camp that she wants to take this thing all the way to the convention. the likelihood of that, though, considering the fact she has no seemingly path forward to the nomination seems fair hi low to me. >>. >> reporter: just on monday night, she was slamming joe biden as being a washington insider. saying that the democrats shouldn't be putting up a washington insider. our colleague had the chance to ask that question of senator warren last night after her event saying if you do not win a state here on super tuesday, will you stay in the race? and senator warren, who is usually quick to answer, offered no response to that.

so i know our team is in massachusetts with her. her first event in which we should be expecting to see her next is the not until thursday in lansing, fwan. >> really quickly. let's round out all the candidates. any indications speaking of billionaire michael bloomberg dropping out, any indication he may do that after how things played out for him on super tuesday? >> reporter: several of our nbc news colleagues reporting that the bloomberg campaign is going to be reassessing the status of their own campaign here as the sun comes up. because last night was disappointing. for putting in $500 million in your campaign, michael bloomberg will have not won a single state and barely met the 15% threshold in a couple of them. he thought he was going to be essentially able to be in the position that joe biden finds himself this morning, but those results yesterday in which michael bloomberg spent heavily

and has been up on tv air waves since thanksgiving, this was not quite the result in which $500 million was the anticipated outcome for michael bloomberg. >> think of all that money being spent and then just walking away with american samoa. thank you. we're going to check back in with you. president trump went after rivals on twitter as candidates waited on the results of super tuesday. the president tweeted about michael bloomberg writing in part, the biggest loser tonight by far is mini mike bloomberg. he got nothing for his $700 million. but the nickname and the complete destruction of his reputation, way to go, mike. trump then went after elizabeth warren. tweeting out, elizabeth "pocahontas" warren, the loser of the night.

now she can sit back with her husband and have a nice cold beer. however, joe biden defended his opponents in a tweet to trump writing, you lost tonight. democrats around the country are fired up. we are decent, brave and resilient people we are better than you. come november we are going to beat you. >> as the president went after michael bloomberg and elizabeth warren on twitter, the president watched the returns roll in on television. they tried to tamp down on joe biden's momentum. everyone should reremember that he's just as terrible a candidate right now as he was a couple days ago. before adding that, establishment democrats ganged up to deny bernie sanders the nomination as the race turns into a battle between sanders and biden, trump has seized on the division. the democratic party has gone crazy. and as trump's reelection effort heats up, the rnc announced it raised $86 million last month

it's a sense that as insane as everything has felt, as unconventional to say the least as everything has been since 2015, there's still a resilient core of american voters. >> that was presidential historian john meacham sharing his thoughts saying americans vo voted for a return to normalcy. john meacham will be a guest coming up this morning on "morning joe." then there's the issue of voter turnout. the commonwealth of virginia saw more voters than ever before yesterday. about 1.3 million votes were counted with 1% of the vote still out. nearly doubling the 780,000 votes cast back in 2016. even b surpass iing the 2008 primary between barack obama and hillary clinton, when underunder 1 million voted. the sanders campaign long argued that high voter turnout favors their candidate, but that was not the case in virginia last night. where biden won by 20 points.

>> let's switch gears and bring in meteorologist bill karins with a check on your weather. we have been talking about the disaster in tennessee. any relief today for the folks down there? >> they don't have any bad weather coming down there. the pucktures are incredible. when you see most tornadoes, most of them are weak. we don't get a lot of these strong ones. when you see pictures like this when you don't know what you're looking at anymore. sometimes like the weak tornadoes will just take the roof off. when you get an ef-3 like these, you see this incredible damage with winds in access of 160 miles per hour. and you see there's cars and objects that are embedded into concrete. and you can see why in the middle of the night, even if people were in their shelters why we lost so many lives. >> can i just quickly ask buzz you brought up a good point. it hit in the middle of the night the reason the number is so high. was there any warning?

wall street saw yet another day in negative territory as it was mired in uncertainty after the feds emergency interest rate cuts filled to stabilize the stock markets because of the coronavirus. stocks jumped initially but then tumbled. the dow falling nearly 1,000 points and ending down 800. the s&p also dropped 2.8% while the nasdaq dropped 3%. even safe haven us assets saw trouble. the ten-year treasury yield fell for the first time ever.
