♪ good morning, everyone. it is wednesday, march 11th, i'm i've lost track of the day. it's wednesday, march 11th. i'm ayman mohyeldin alongside yasmin vossoughian. i know that because yesterday was a voting tuesday. you have to remember it's wednesday. >> working on the fly there. >> we begin with last night's democratic primary contest as joe biden extends his lead with victories in four of the states that voted last night. of course, the key state, the state of michigan with the most delegates up for grabs, missouri and bernie sanders up by seven points with 63% of the results in so far. over in washington state which, of course, as you know, has been rocked by the coronavirus, too

close to call as well. sanders leads by less than 2100 votes. or 0.2 of a percentage point right now. any talk of a sanders comeback in michigan, that was blighted by sanders' double digit lead. biden awards 65 of the delegates so far. sanders gets 45 of those. 15 delegates still on the table with 7% of votes still out. >> we're also watching mississippi not because of biden's massive 81%. but because of sanders won 45 there. but it's actually 14.8. if sanders does not land at 15.0 which the remaining number of votes come in, he won't get a single state wide delegate from that state. here's where the delegate total stands so far, biden, 836,

sanders with 686. according to an nbc news exit poll, this is a 20-point yip tick for biden. meanwhile, biden continued to perform well among key voting groups including in michigan where he received over 60% of the vote of african-americans and voters over the age of 45. over in mississippi, he won 80% of voters, older voters, moderates, conservatives and black voters. and down in missouri, over 80% of democratic voters there who said they wanted a candidate who could unite the country, they ended up choosing the former vice president. >> joe biden last night addressed supporters from the national constitution center in philadelphia where following numerous primary victories, he sounded like he had already

>> good morning. >> bernie sanders thought to secure the nomination, looks like it's going to get a little more narrow this morning. where is his campaign turning its phoning customer focuses a yesterday. where does he have a path to a nomination? >> well, i thought it was telling that bernie sanders did not take the stage last night, basically ceding the stage to joe biden on a very good night for him. continuing his momentum after the super tuesday victory. these are states that joe biden
2:06 am
will win or draw with bernie sanders. it becomes hard to see how he will move forward. i think there will be some clarity in the next few days. clearly, the pressure is mounting now on bernie sanders to drop out of the race, even as we look to sunday night, where the two men will be debating in phoenix, arizona. but you heard the words of jim clyburn who wants this race over with. he wants bernie sanders to concede to biden. and i think you're going to hear more and more calls from biden supporters, and democrats in general that it's time for unify the party. >> and the sanders camp, though, has said, and they are committed showing up to the debate, making sure that they're there, nonetheless. so, i think we'll see sanders there and beyond that next week. who will knows, we'll have to wait to see. obviously, there's an indication, with regards to michigan especially if biden were to take michigan the way he did last night, that basically predicts how he's going to be
2:07 am
doing a lot of those midwest states. so, give us a sense about how last night's impact -- how last night's result are going to impact the path forward for the former vice president. >> yeah, biden is really putting together his own sort of coalition that includes suburban women in the suburbs outside of detroit. although includes noncollege educated white men. who had typically gone for bernie in the past, now are shifting towards joe biden. clearly, joe biden is doing very well with african-american voters, as we saw in michigan and mississippi. bernie has a slight edge on biden in terms of the hispanic vote. but i think all of this portends that joe biden has the potential to do very well in the general election against donald trump in some of these swing states that were critical in the 2016 election. wisconsin, michigan, ohio, pennsylvania.
2:08 am
where biden was born and raised. and so, biden, i think, is going to start -- you're going to start to see biden pivot to the general election at this point already this morning. you're seeing ads go up from super pacs are that are boosting biden in some of these key critical states with an eye towards the general election. with an eye targeting donald trump, not necessarily bernie sanders. and so, more and more, i think you're going to start to see this pivot towards the general election. >> scott wong in d.c. thanks, scott. >> thank you. now to the very latest on the growing coronavirus threat here in the u.s. as the number of known cases across the country has now topped 1,000. new states of emergency have been declared in colorado, massachusetts and michigan because of the virus. one of the top federal health officials issued this warning yesterday. >> we would like the country to realize that as a nation, we

can't be doing the kinds of things we were doing a few months ago. that it doesn't matter if you're in a state that has no cases or one case. you have to start taking seriously what you can do now, that if and when the infections will come. and they will come, sorry to say, sad to say, they will. >> now, according to the "the new york times," after weeks of mounting frustrations, states with a growing number of cases are still struggling to test widely for coronavirus. the paper notes that continued delays have made it impossible for officials to get a true picture of the scale of the outbreak. in new york, for example, state officials have set up a one-mile containment area in new rochelle. public schools in the area will be closed until march 25th. westchester county has seen 108 cases. >> and joe biden and bernie sanders were both supposed to
2:10 am
hold rallies yesterday but the rallies were cancelled citing public health officials. and this week's debate will not have a live audience. coachella and stage coach has been post pointed until october. and talk shows like abc's "the view" and live with kelly and ryan will stop taping in front of live audiences. and the uk health minister has tested positive, she met with boris johnson a few days before becoming ill. and politicians who have self-quarantined over coronavirus concerns, president trump sees no reason to be tested for the deadly disease. >> i don't think it's a big deal or we'd do it. i don't feel any reason. i feel extremely good. i feel very good. but i guess it's not a big deal do get tested. it's something that i would do.

i was thinking with the new realities with the forecasting and the coronavirus, the outdoor forecast is probably more important than ever. all of the indoor events being cancelled. people being outside, hiking, biking, fishing going could be skyrocketing with activities, especially with kids, you got to keep them entertained. today, we're watching showers in southern missouri. snow from lake michigan, for today's forecast, it's still extremely warm for this time of year. i mean, it's been goingology for so long, we kind of forget what it's supposed to be like. 82 degrees from san antonio to dallas. and 60s in detroit. and the tree pollen through the roof. heading up into the nation's capital. we still have a little stormy weather we're dealing with in southern california and nothing horrible. as far as the forecast tomorrow, more of the same, 85 in dallas tomorrow.

i often see them have teeth sensitivity as well as gum issues. does it worry me? absolutely. they are both very much hand in hand. so you should really be focusing on both and definitely at the same time. the new sensodyne sensitivity & gum gives us the dual action effect that really takes care of both our teeth sensitivity as well as our gum issues. by brushing with sensodyne sensitivity & gum at home it's giving you the relief that you need and the control that you need to take care of your oral health. and it creates a healthier environment. there's no question it's something that i would recommend. frustrated that clean clothes you want to wear always seem to need an iron? next time try bounce wrinkle guard dryer sheets. just toss it in the dryer to bounce out wrinkles. we dried these shorts with bounce wrinkle guard, and a pair without. the bounce wrinkle guard shorts have fewer wrinkles and static, and more softness. it's the world's first mega sheet that does the job of three dryer sheets. it also comes in unscented. if you don't love bounce wrinkle guard,

all right. joining us from axios, alexi. good morning? >> what is the one big thing for us? >> it's like we had a mini super tuesday of sorts last night in which joe biden cleaned house again. that's what's fascinating about this primary cycle, that just a few days ago, i mean, ten or so days ago before the south carolina primary end of last month, the conversation about bernie sanders and joe biden was how the democrats or various democrats were looking at bernie sanders heading into super tuesday with what they thought would be an accumulation of an insurmountable lead of delegates. that hasn't happened in the original super tuesday and last night that doesn't happen for bernie sanders again. we saw joe biden give remarks at the same time that bernie sanders didn't even give remarks after last night's contest, which i think says a lot about the way that he underperformed
2:57 am
last night after the previous to contests. and we saw how joe biden clearly pivoted to welcoming sanders supporters and the sanders campaign into his movement after he seen the way in which he's taking off with this thing. >> as we've heard, there has been appeals for sanders at this point to concede because there may not be a possible path forward for him. others would disagree with that. talk us through about the timing of all this and if there's a possibility that could feasibly happen. >> you know, i haven't heard much from the sanders campaign over the last 24 hours and i think that's in part because they are figuring out what their path forward looks like. now if we talk about a path forward in terms of just numbers and straight math, there might be some feasible path forward in some way if we stretch our brains. but realistically the delegate lead that biden has accumulated especially after last night, makes it really difficult to see a viable path forward for senator sanders in this primary. we know he's been fighting the pro progressive fight.
2:58 am
we saw warren drop out leaving bernie sanders as the person to carry the progressive mantel. but we've seen the way in which joe biden has carried the moderate vote. that's been a larger percentage of the democratic primary voters than those who identify as progressive. >> let me get your thoughts quickly on the sanders campaign in terms of where does it go from here? not necessarily trying to reach or make up a delegate count, but does him stay in the race give him letter raverage to get some platforms like medicare for all or some aspects of the green new deal or, you know, minute mum wag minimum wage or things like that or does he have to concede for the greater party unity? >> those are great questions. but when i talk to progressive leaders who were supportive of bernie sanders and elizabeth warren before she dropped out, they say that they would really love to see a debate just between biden and sanders this
2:59 am
sunday, which is obviously scheduled to happen right now. that would change if sanders dropped out. but they tell me that it's not because they think it will change the outcome of this race, but because, to your point, they want bernie to push biden on a few of these really staple progressive policies and ideas that he has as part of his platform and to see whether or not biden will move at all on some of these things that bernie has been championing. we're not going to see bind come out for medicare for all. we know where he stands on these big issues. but smaller things that bernie has been pushing that is more in line with the progressive wing of the party, there's a incentive for him to stay in through sunday to get joe biden to change some parts of his platform now that it looks like he could be presumptive nominee. >> but it's interesting how you say joe biden won't go to medicare for all because when you look at the exit polling, across the board in the states that voted last night along with super tuesday as well, many
3:00 am
americans do want medicare for all, inspect of the fact th all, in spite of the fact that they're voting for joe biden. >> that's one of the fascinating things that you mentioned from super tuesday, joe biden wins over voters who are supportive of a single-payer, government-run health care system. yet folks who are supportive of that are still flocking to joe biden, to your point, because they value unity and the ability to beat donald trump more than anything. and those are two things that joe biden has proven in the last couple of weeks alone that he's capable of pulling off. >> all right. thank you very much. we're going to be reading axios a.m. in just a little bit. you too can sign up for that newsletter by going to axios.com. >> that does it for us this morning.
