this show. msnbc answers on twitter, facebook and instagram. you can e-mail us to talk@msnbc.com. first we want to get you up to speed on the latest news on coronavirus. >> we're just two hours away from an update from the white house on the pandemic and what's being done to combat it. this as the number of cases in the u.s. has now passed 3,000, including 61 deaths. >> the country's top infectious disease expert anthony fauci warns we still need to do more to stop the spread. >> would you prefer a 14-day national shutdown to slow this down. >> i would prefer as much as we could. i think we should be overly aggressive and get criticized for over reacting. i think americans should be prepared they will have to hunker down significantly more than we as a country are doing. >> we're seeing massive lines and over crowding at airports now as travelers are attempting to get into the u.s. amid the new coronavirus imposed screenings.
12:01 pm
>> illinois's governor criticized the trump administration in a spritring o tweets yesterday because there was so much airport chaos. he called the lines up acceptable and said the government needed to get it together. >> here is how the white house responded to him. >> well, here is what i got. call at about 11:00 last night after that tweet from a white house staffer who yelled at me about the tweet. that is what i got. >> new polling out today reveals that majority of americans, 60% feel the worst is yet to come with this virus. >> now we want to get to your questions. we have plenty but keep them coming. you can use the hashtag msnbc answers. you can also e-mail us. >> we have piles of questions but i think it's good if we like basically set the ground rules here. what we want to make clear our

answers are based on what we know now. we are in completely different place than when we did this show on wednesday. kie it keeps changing fast. nothing we say with substitute for the advice of your doctor and your specific situations. doctors cannot diagnose you over e-mail. here is today's panel. let's get to the questions. >> should i go first? >> yes. >> the question from taylor. is there any definitive number or range of age for the healthiest of individuals between which they contract covid-19 and they begin to display symptoms and are they contagious before they display symptoms? more importantly will they display symptoms or is it possible they may feel well enough to circulate among the
12:03 pm
public for weeks without knowing they are transmitting the virus? what do you think? >> those are great questions. thank you for having this ongoing conversation. the data really is evolving and changing almost every day. let's unpack all those questions. people can actually carry the virus but not necessarily exhibit any symptoms. you can feel healthy and also carry the virus. that said, that doesn't mean you won't be shedding. you can be carrying the virus, feel well and yet still be shedding the virus. it's really important to practice what we have been talking about which is social distancing and good precautions because we don't know who is carrying the virus. >> okay, from nancy. i'm a retail worker. part of my job straight tennesseeing up after people on the sales floor. i wash my hands and stay away from people as much as i can but i'm constantly touching things that other people have touched.
12:04 pm
i'm just curious, how long does the coronavirus live on hard surfaces? >> certain laboratory studies have shown they can stay active and infectious up to nine days. current data might suggest a few days earlier. wash your hands after you touch everything and that way you're going to stay safe. >> people are watching who use those sanitizer, or wipes on everything repeatedly, smart. >> absolutely. >> agreed. >> got a lot of questions. let me say, you see a lot of people in retail establishments wearing rubber gloves. i think that should be a practice. it's widely adapted. people riding on subways, we suggested we set up stations with inexpensive but effective gloves that people can put on and dispose of after they hold
12:05 pm
on the subway poles and touching the seats. >> let's dig into that. a lot of us ride transit. i started with thew subway pole to put my arm around it rather than putting my hand on it. i've been putting my phone in my pockets more. if people are thinking i'm going to amazon to start buying gloves, what are they shopping for? >> for the most inexpensive gloves possible. you can use a paper towel for all i can. if you can avoid with your hand touching a surface on a public transportation whether a bus, subway, in an airplane, that's fine. we know the rules for airplane riders. it's wiping down the tray table. wiping down the screen, the tv screen and the armrest and really just trying to take care of yourself and that will help reduce the spread. even the idea of traveling on an airplane now, we're talking about very serious restrictions
12:06 pm
and problems with that. >> we'll do a whole section on travel, coming up. let me read this question. i live with my 87-year-old mother who has respiratory problems. i work full-time outside of the home. in other words to help my mother i do care amount of cook and cleaning. whae we heard you can pass the vie lus before owe show symptoms. i'm concerned i could contract the disease an not know it. how do people in the same household keep from passing on the virus to other family members? >> let me take a stab at it and feel free to leap in here. i think that's a risk situation. grandma at 87 is a risk already. if she has any precondition especially in the respiratory, really anywhere, anything that might affect her ability to respond, she is at very high risk. i completely understand the question. i'm not sure we entirely know the answer but even trying to
12:07 pm
stay a six foot distance from your elder relatives is really important here. it's hard to do and i think using the hand sanitizer shs grandma using the hand sanitizer, we have to get very serious about the personal hygiene issues which seem minor. they are major ways of controlling spread. >> do we quarantine someone in one room of the house. >> these are really relevant questions and important to all the viewers. the cdc clarifies what to do in household settings. if you're taking care of someone older, there was some of the recommendations make it limit to one person who is going out of their room. keep them as much as possible in one room. don't have them walking all over. practice good hygiene. you have access to hot water and soap, do that really religiously. avoid touching face but minimize that one person and keeping a distance as much as you can.
12:08 pm
>> go through your house with the cleaners. when you're not there with your elderly loved one, they should get outside and breathe some fresh air. as much as you can limit that distance. keep rigorous hygiene in the house. any kind of surface you'll be touching and using. >> you heard from a lot of people with diabetes about this. here is one representative question from bob who asks, i'm on dialysis and go three times a week. i'm squacared that someone willt only have the virus and spread it but the dialysis center will have to close or patient will be told to stay home. if we stay home, we can't get dialysis. what are patients supposed to do if at isolation at home.
12:09 pm
>> there's been recommendations. first of all, dialysis is life sustaining therapy. it's not an option to just not get dialysis, first of all. secondly, some of the recommendations that are being made about facilities are screen patients before they come in, before they make their patient. screen all -- especially high risk patients. if they are at risk, have them wear masks. have your staff if they are sick, stay home and don't apply punitive measures. be supportive of staff who are sick and wearing face mackinsks. >> i'm curious about what's going on in doctors and other medical offices. i've been getting a ton of e-mails from every doctor or dentist i've ever been through talking about well, first of all, if i have an appointment, are you still coming but also talking about what they have put into place. are we getting to the point though where a lot of these
12:10 pm
offices are going to only have to be for people who really need to go? if you're going for a dental cleaning, maybe you don't go now. if you have a horrible tooth ache and feel like you might be infected, then you do go. how are the decisions being made? >> right now, awe eyes need to be on the health care system. it's in deep trouble. i'm talking about today. the next week or two weeks we can see serious problems in dealing with patients in general. it's not just the patients that may have covid-19 because the more we get over crowds with those patient, the less we're able to care properly for people with trauma, stroke and chest pain. it's happening as we speak. people should stay out of the doctors offices. anything elective should be postponed for the foreseeable future.
12:11 pm
we have been in this issue before. the thing is our public officials have to understand the gravity of what's happening in american hospitals from coast to coast. it's no two ways about it. whatever we do, we need -- they need a lot of help. they are running out of ppe today in hospitals in new york city. we're talking about serious -- >> running out of what? >> personal protective equipment. g gloves, masks. they are running out of the nasal swabs to get the sample. they are having to go to research labs to try to get as many as they can. the federal government has major role here to focus on the hospitals. what are the alternative care sites. we use the va hospitals to back us up and what are weoncretely.
12:12 pm
>> let's pause there for a moment. our panel will stick around for the hour. >> keep sending us your questions. you can e-mail us talk@msnbc.com. up next, we're live at chicago's o'hare airport. how is coronavirus affecting travel there? air travelers are facing a new reality when dealing with a global pandemic. that is next. h a global pandemic. that is next did you know that febreze air effects uses 100% natural propellant? cheaper aerosols use artificial propellants.

we're already getting a sense of how it's hitting in a lot of different areas. n nbcnews.com has a piece looking at a few of the things we know. just the cancellation of the southwest by southwest festival will cost austin $355 million in revenue. >> no march madness would mean a loss of $100 million. that's just to atlanta.
12:17 pm
the loss of the frozen four. that's the ncaa hockey e kwif lents lent will cost detroit about 10 million dollar. on top of that the impact on airlines continues to grow especially with that travel ban to the uk in ireland. that's set to take place, take effect at midnight tomorrow night. the international air transport association is estimating the global hit at $113 billion. they have been adjusting that up on almost a daily basis and money is far from what most travelers are thinking about right now. >> look at this. a dallas journalist tweeting these images at dfw international saying passengers had no offers of hand sanitizers, gloves from customs and immigration officers nor did they get temperature checks. one of several airports with hours long lines had people standing in close quarters. you can see them in the pictures. exactly what we have been told not to do. >> president trump tweeted that
12:18 pm
airports are doing very precise screenings and moving as quickly as possible. he wrote quote we must get it right and also safety first. nbc's wendy the monitoring the situation at o'hare international in chicago. have things smoothed out or talk about it being crazy, a little crowded and cramped? >> reporter: cramped is an underestimate. we're taking it in baby steps today. good afternoon to you. chicago mayor has some very strong words about what happened behind these doors last niet calling it a fail. you have to remember, passengers are not technically in the city of chicago until they walk through them. everything behind them considered federal jurisdiction. we have all seen that awful video by now of thousands of people waiting in small spaces. waiting some four, six and even eight hours after o'hare, dfw, jfk. some of the 13 airports
12:19 pm
funneling passengers returning from europe. that goes directly against guidelines from the cdc and health departments to help prevends the spread of covid-19. this local mayor frustrated by not being consulted before directives are given by the federal government. >> when the federal government doesn't listen and when it doesn't bring the considerations of mayors and governors and other local officials into the equation, not only are you creating a disaster, not only are you creating a hazardous circumstance that threatens the public, you risk causing serious illness and death. >> reporter: mayor lightfoot very much acknowledges today could be another tough day here at o'hare international. flights from europe already in route to chicago. they have already asked the faa to stagger the flight patterns and keep passengers on board until they can be processed. most importantly, guys, they
12:20 pm
have asked to cut some of that red tape and let local emts who are on stand by at the airport, asking them to help the federal screenings process that's new to every one here. hopefully cutting that red tape will make it smoother and safer for every one. >> thank you, wendy. >> i'm not sure when you look at those pictures that i found as somebody who flies a lot, terrifying, how you deal with those kinds of numbers. they had to know when they said they would put the travel restrictions into place this was the inevitable outcome. i was trying to think if i was in that situation, what would i do. i know i wouldn't stand many that group of people knowing what i know for four, five six hours. on the other hand, i can't make it a run for it. what in the world are you guys who are medical professionals thinking when you see this? >> we both have a lot to say.
12:21 pm
oh, my god. travel is stressful at baseline. we're talking o'hare which is the country's busiest airport. this should have been anticipated. this is not a secret. we have been talk about this for weeks. again, trying to keep social distance which recommendation, six feet but in a crowd like that it's hard. trying to cover your mouth. trying to keep your distance and using hand sanitizer. otherwise, these are all optimal in that crowd. >> we have lots of questions about travel in general. that's why we should introduce another member of our panel who joins us alongside dr. roy. >> let's get to a question from margie who asks my son and his family threw to ecuador. they were checked for fever. when they landed at dfw, they
12:22 pm
weren't checked for anything. many, many people touching the same surfaces for reentry to the u.s. what's not okay about this? i think the answer is everything is not okay. >> this incredible mishandling starts at the top. we're used to the president tweeting nonsense and caught many times in giving false information to the public. now it's serious. his inability to control himself from happy talk during a crisis like this is unconsciousable. i'm seeing this disorganization of what the messages are to the public and lack of policy decisions that are made about air travel is very much endangering travelers in the united states. this cannot go on. he needs a czar who knows
12:23 pm
something about these issues. they should not issue a policy statement without having images. it's immediate danger to people. we have to figure this out like right now. there are things that can be done but we have do them. >> clearly, the health issue is paramount. for a lot of people it's an every day life this this has caused such disruption. my cruise to europe is cancelled. the princess is taking care of us with refunds. now i found out that travel guard won't pay for coronavirus. the national emergency make any difference. do i just lose money? >> the really unfortunate thing that is a lot of travelers are finding out is that travel insurance typically does not
12:24 pm
cover a pandemic or epidemic. that's not a covered cost. your recourse is really going to the provider directly. i think you'll have a lot better luck asking for a refund even if there's no policy in place. the policies are changing so quickly. following up in week, asking if you can get a refund for a credit for a future trip. >> worth noting, we took a look at travel guard's website. i want to make sure we go through this from travel guard. we're kind of saying it's not covered. trips cancelled for fear of taking the trip. you could try for insurance refound. maybe a voucher for future travel insurance. if the flight is cancelled because of coronavirus, you can seek a refund. if you have cancelled for any reason, that might cover part of the loss dependsing on the policy and cover trips covered more than 48 hours before departure. if it's a cruise line, contact
12:25 pm

12:26 pm
on. it should not have been all the money you are counting on living on. every one should have an emergency fund. we talk about it all the time. people say it's a rainy day fund. it's a coronavirus fund. we need to have one. if you do not have one, here is a time to take some of the money that you have been putting into your 401 k and start building up on arj fund. make sure you have resources to last a month but ideally, who knows how long it will have to last. you want to keep banking that money. you don't want to my out on your 401(k) free money opinion if your company matches your contribution, put enough in to get that company match. then the other real savings goal needs to be making sure you have cash on hand when you need it in an emergency fund. make sure you're putting money into the account. if you're not get that steady paycheck and you've been out of work, you have a 401(k), you
