difference in changing the trajectory of this disease. >> i'm still going to live my life exactly as before. if you have someone they're trying to persuade that they need to be a part of this effort, how do you approach them? >> be able to flatten that curve by everybody taking responsible. i think it's so important that each of us recognize that even if we're healthy, look, i love the fact that people have an attitude of wanting to preserve their normal life as much as possible. we can't continue the way that we normally are. i think that we have to respect the fact this is our new normal. at the same time try to live within means, when ever that's possible with exercise, movement, mindfulness, whatever we can do. >> vice president biden -- i'm sorry vice president pence is
1:06 pm
going to be leading a press conference in less than an hour. do you have a sense of what we can expect to hear from the vice president? >> yes, we think they will probably be announcing, at least a couple of new initiatives from the white house podium. today having to do with availability of tests and certainly the vice president or president trump, if he makes an appearance and his twitter today suggests he might, they will get a lot of questions about the long lines and the congested conditions and the lack of planning involved for returnees at u.s. airports today. the pictures you showed a short while ago is the situation being replicated at dozen or more airports across the country. that will be a major focus for the white house reporters asking the president, the vice president and members of the task force why that happened and

baggage claims at the airports last night. i do think that will have to give answers as to what ann was talking about as the whether or not this is posing a public health risk to americans and for foreigners in these airports in these crowded conditions. i think that's one of the answers we're hoping to hear. how they are addressing this problem and implement some type of social distancing to the degree that they can at a number of u.s. airports to minimize the risk to americans. >> when you have new york's governor writing an op-ed urging the president to mobilize the military to set up temporary medical centers. your take. >> we know we're going to be over capacity in our hospitals. i'm hearing from my colleagues all around the country that their e.r.s are being crowded with the worried well. people who don't need emergency care but are there because they are concerned about coronavirus.
1:09 pm
please do not go to the e.r. unless you really need emergency care. we need to save those e.r. beds and hospital beds for people who are truly ill. still, we're going to run out of space. be more we can build up capacity in the hospitals, the better but there are things that each of us can do right now to prevent the transmission of the disease to others. >> there's a lot of concerns over the economy here because people are scared to go out. i will just say one of the things you can do, if you're healthy, you and your family, it's a great time to go out and go to a local restaurant. likely you can get in easily. it does not hurt the working people in this country. >> is that messaging dangerous? >> very much so. it's exactly the opposite of what we should be doing right now. we should be staying at home.
1:10 pm
hunki ieering down. we should be preventing the spread of this disease. it's spread from person to person. if we stop the transmission, person to person, that's how we're going to curve this illness. we're also going to see a large escalation in this country. >> i have to pick up there and say a new nbc poll out today says that 60% of americans feel that the worst is yet to come, but there is a clear partisan divide with that number being 79 for democrats and 40% for republicans. how does that reality play out in what we see from the white house on capitol hill in this coming week? >> i think you're seeing something here that we haven't had to deal with in past public health crises. disease is not partisan issue. you can get it whatever political party you support. whether you believe president trump is doing a good job or
1:11 pm
not. you can still get it. the fact that the white house is not sort of getting ahead of that and the president, although he is actually out there talking just about every day about ways that the administration is trying to confront this crisis, we don't see from the president, the vice president directly messaging to the most loyal trump supporters saying, look, you actually do need to listen to nbc news. you need to read the washington post. you need to pay attention to reliable national reporting that tells you exactly how widespread this disease is and ways to keep yourself safe. we have a story today and it was disspiriting to see people in conservative parts of the country say they think they should go out and go to church
1:12 pm
and should do things in public because not doing so is giving in to liberal hype. it's not. not doing so is keeping yourself safe. >> all right. thank you all so much. after the break, we're going to talk about what they're doing on capitol hill. where does the relief bill stand and is it just start of what's needed from congress? there's a debate in washington. you better believer health care will be a big part of it. i'll ask the biden and sanders campaign how they are preparing. that's coming up on nbc live. snacking should be sweet and simple. the delicious taste of glucerna gives you the sweetness you crave while helping you manage your blood sugar. glucerna. everyday progress

ended up with bill that excludes these larger companies. at this point i just want to emphasize that we did include free testing for anyone that need a test, a coronavirus test. if you're feeling those symptoms, you'll be able to get tested without cost. it also covers over 80 million americans if they have to stay home for those companies with employees of 500 or less. if you have to stay home, if you have a sick one at home that you need the take care of, it provides three months of paid family leave. this bill is not perfect but we had to act very swiftly. we sent it to the senate. i expect the senate to act just as fast as we did. >> you talked about small businesses. i want to read you this tweet from the senator from your state. marco rubio. the senate small business committee has a bipartisan plan to protect workers from layoffs and help businesses provide the goods and services we need to

as the number of coronavirus cases escalate, immigration advocates are ringing the alarm about the potentially devastati devastating impact this could have in the detention centers. in a series of letters sent last week, the aclu of southern california called on i.c.e. to develop a plan of action for detention centers. it points out that people in detention are highly vulnerable to outbreaks of contagious illnesses because they're living in close quarters and are often

in bad health. wi thank you for joining me. we talked about it in the intro, but i'd love for you to talk through it with us. what are the risks these making rants are facing? >> thanks so much for having me. the risks that detainees have, individuals and families being forced at the border, the concerns and health risks are great. we have seen at the detention facilities, the conditions have always been substandard there. people are being housed in masses at the facility itself where they hold 2,000 individuals, people are placed in barracks of over 100 people. and medical facilities at these i.c.e. facilities, detention facilities have always been substandard. they've not been able to provide

adequate care. in the last year alone there have been several times people have been put into quarantine due to the spread of infectious diseases. with covid-19 quarantining mass people is not an option. detention facilities are not adequately to be able to respond to this threat. >> what would it look like to proactively begin to address these challenges? >> as you stated yerlier, the aclu along with others, we are calling upon i.c.e. demanding they release detainees. it's just a public health crisis waiting to happen. housing these individuals, keeping them there, waiting for the covid-19 to spread at these facilities is a huge threat that the public safety cannot -- should not have to undertake. >> at the same time, despite this pandemic you still have many migrants being forced to show up to court hearings.
1:54 pm
how does that complicate this equation? >> that's exactly right. one thing we need to be asking ourselves and this administration is, what is more important in this time? is it the sanctity of our public health? or is it immigration enforcement? the fact that imgraegs court proceedings are continuing, the removal of individuals is continuing, that they are not suspending these hearings, tells thaw clearly for this administration, they still don't think that this is a crisis that deserves us responding and protecting the public's health. >> we've talked about those in detention facilities, we've talked about those at our border. let's talk about undocumented members of our community. what needs to be done in order for them to feel safe enough to be tested for this virus? >> immediately i.c.e. must come out and say that they are suspending enforcement activities until covid-19 we have it under control. unless and until they can do
1:55 pm
that, i could almost guarantee you that immigrant families, especially those undocumented are going to be forced to go underground, because they're too scared to seek out help and assistance, and we can't afford that. >> thank you so much for joining us. >> thank you. that wraps it up. in just a few minutes we expect a live briefing from the coronavirus task force from the white house. we'll bring it to you live. the reverend al sharpton takes over at the top of the hour with "politicsnation." r with "politicsnation. want to brain better? unlike ordinary memory supplements-neuriva
