otherwise taken decades. >> reporter: the campaign is called birtherism abhorrent. aides promise they will respond aggressively to attacks against the first woman of color on a national ticket. kendis. >> thank you, andrea mitchell. for more on this, joining me is michael starr hopkins. he has also served on presidential campaigns of obama and hillary clinton. michael, good morning to you. obviously, having served on the two previous campaigns, you know the sort of op-po that would come out. is this expected? >> good morning. this is the trump playbook. president trump, then candidate and private citizen trump, used the same attack lines against obama that he is using now against kamala harris. questioning the citizenship and

legitimacy to hold office. this is racist. the idea of birtherism. this is pure racism. it is president trump and his administration showing it is scared of strong, black individuals. whether female or male. it is good to see the biden camp pushing back strongly and aggressively. >> senator harris is not taking the bait. ignoring the attacks from the president. you get a sense that is the right move to not give the baseless theories any are more oxygen? >> you know, you have to give them a balance. to some degree, the ignoring of the accusations of obama's presidency gave them some legitima legitimacy. i think they're smart to punch the trump team back in the mouth and move along the issues. >> it is interesting, michael. i'm sure you have seen videos. there are so many emotional reactions from black women and indian-american women and kamala

harris' being named to that ticket. she spoke a little bit more about what this all means and why it is so important for black women to vote. >> when you have one ticket that can say the phrase black lives matter and another who has been full-time sowing hate and division in the country. those are the things that motivate black women to vote. there will be a point of pride. you don't want to have false d modemo modesty of a black women to be on the ticket. it takes more than that to vote. >> they did raise quite a bit of money after she was named to the ticket. $48 million in 48 hours. it did causal of thoe all of th emotions for the black women across the country. >> black women are the most

consi consi consistent voters across the country for the democratic ticket. representation matters. for them to see a black woman now on a presidential ticket is something powerful. something they will never forget and the next generation of children will never think is impossible. >> "the washington post" reporting that the biden campaign plans to deploy harris to swing states and connect with voters and activists and suburban women and groups whose support for biden is far from guaranteed. you get a sense harris will rally the key voting blocks. she tried it as a presidential candidate. it did not work. why now? >> this is going to be different than a primary. democrats are united. there is a foil in donald trump and mike pence. so, what you see is the party rallying around together and

democrats rebuilding the obama coalition which was african-americans, latinos, suburban women and college educated men. we're seeing that in the nomination of kamala harris to the ticket. she has the ability to excite african-american women and bring in young progressives and suburban women who are running away from the trump administration at record rates. especially as he attempts to rig this election with the united states postal service and his lack of funding. >> a key voting block within the democratic party that is needed. elizabeth warren wing and bernie sanders wing. some suggest from the progressive wing of the party with harris picked. her record as a former prosecutor has been criticized as you know. we're in the midst of the middle of the movement centered around that in the country. do you get a sense that democrats will remain concerned

be processed in time to be counted. josh lederman is at the white house for us. josh, the president has resisted funding the postal service. what is he saying now? >> reporter: good morning, kendis. there were a few things in life we could get behind. baseball, apple pie and the post office. now the usps has been thrust in the middle of the raging fight over mail-in voting with president trump and democrats. the latest alarming development overnight are the letters that the post office's top leader said the timeline for voters requesting and returning absentee ballots. they may not be able to deliver back in time to be counted. questions if voters trying to vote by mail will be

disenfranchis disenfranchised. the postmaster general has been blamed for the delays with the cost cutting measures. whether those were about efficafieffec efficiency or an attempt to kneecap the post office. the postmaster general is looking into the issues. democrats say there is still some time to do something about this, kendis. they have been asking in the negotiations for $25 billion for the u.s. postal service and $3.5 billion for election resources as states across the country move rapidly toward mail-in voting during the coronavirus pandemic. president trump has repeatedly said he is opposed to the funding. acknowledging he doesn't want the funding for the post office. he knows democrats want to expand mail-in voting. take a listen when he was asked if he would support more money for the post office.

>> what i want is what the american people want. in addition to the executive orders that we signed which will be doing terrific things with payroll tax cut which is a lot of money coming to a lot of people quickly. i directed the secretary of the treasury to get ready and send direct payments. $3,400 for a family of four for all americans. democrats are holding this up. >> reporter: kendis, the president said he might be able to sign something that does include funding for the postal service if it was part of the deal with democrats in which the president and white house got a lot of what they have been asking for. including that payroll tax holiday that the president has been seeking. as far as getting any closer to a deal? the senate have all gone home through labor day. the house is not in washington. it is possible they could get called back to d.c. rapidly if

now to the latest of coronavirus pandemic headlines. texas becoming the fourth state in the u.s. to surpass 10,000 covid-19 related deaths. this comes after a forecast from the cdc saying the death toll could reach 200,000 by labor

day. we learned the u.s. and canadian border will remain closed for another month. canada extending the ban on non-essential travel until september 21st. that said, that travel ban will likely not be lifted before the end of the year. in new jersey, reversal on school reopening. schools can choose the semester with the all-remote learning plan. this is after fripressure from teachers union. we have cori coffin with more. what does this mean for individual districts, cori? >> reporter: this means the individual districts come up with a plan whether or not they will be fully virtual learning or some portion of virtual for the fall. the governor originally saying he wanted all 2,500 public schools to reopen in person this

fall after a lot of pushback from the state's union and individual district iunions and hearing about teacher concerns. if a district qualifies, which means it has to prove it does not have ppe and ventilation and other challenges, then it can opt-in for virtual learning. that is the case in elizabeth. 375 teachers opted in. they had been immunocompromised or live with somebody who could be affected. now elizabeth will be 100% virtual learning. more and more states are doing that. this is a big win for anybody not vying for that and concerned about safety in schools this

fall. it presents challenges. parents having to work and make sure kids get school. will the kids be learning properly virtually and teachers working from home as well. take a listen to what three teachers told me. >> this city that we work in, many of our parents are economically disadvantaged. it is going to be very difficult for all parents to make the decision of staying home or going to work to support their families. >> i have four children of my own at home. i am going to be managing to care for my four children and educating my son and make sure my students have an education. >> what does the juggling of that look like? >> we will try to keep the school day as uniform as possible. i think everyone, teachers, parents and students, will have to take a step back and take a break throughout the day. >> our students rise to the

expectations. if we believe they can do it, they can do it. >> reporter: this is not a 100% virtual learning plan across the board. the governor still requiring a set plan in place to reopen and how they adequately and safely reopen. the teachers tell me they think it is a matter of time, kendis, before all of the districts opt-in to the virtual learning and all qualify for it. this is how easy it is to spread. they, themselves, interact with hundreds of people a day. students, teachers, administrators, bus drivers, security guards. all of these people would then have to quarantine themselves if there were one or two cases. you can see how quickly one or two schools and entire district would be affected by this. all of this coming as a 90% spike in covid cases among children continues to grow nationwide. kendis. >> 90% spike.

troubling data. cori coffin live in new jersey. thank you. new in georgia. what appears to be an aboutface on face masks. as coronavirus spreads in the south and georgia in the top ten states with the most cases. blayne alexander joins us from atlanta. blayne, what is behind this? we call it an aboutface. it is. what is behind the change? >> reporter: kendis, good morning. the governor is withdrawing that lawsuit that he filed against the atlanta mayor and atlanta city council over the mask mandate and restrictions. he is plan beining to replace w an executive order. he is clearing way for mask mandates. it cannot be essentially enforced upon local businesses.

it is important to look at the numbers in georgia. the state health department is pointing to the number of hospitalizations and number of cases which went down over the past week. also this past week, georgia saw its highest single day total of deaths. highest since the pandemic began. this morning, a dire new warning from obtained by the ajc, the coronavirus task force warns the georgia policies are not enough to stop the widespread and expanding community viral spread. urging leaders to close bars and nightclubs and gyms and implement a statewide mask mandate. governor kemp withdrew the lawsuit against keisha lance bottoms. the governor will allow local leaders to require masks, but says they cannot force

businesses to comply. it comes amid new concerns in the classroom. in cherokee county, where students returned to class last week, there are 110 confirmed cases and 1,600 quarantined. >> uneasy feeling. >> reporter: after one week, hillary decided to keep her daughter home. >> to send your child for six or eight hours a day and i heard some people refer to it as a war zone with the illness. it just creates a new havoc in your life. >> reporter: nationwide, more schools are welcoming students. including new york. and in vermont, students are back in a different classroom. >> this is not what any of us expected. we're trying to use all of our creativity. >> reporter: and as america returns to the favorite pasttime, an encouraging sign of 12,000 tested across the league.

he is the florida state lead for the committee to protect medicare. doctor, thank you for being here. i want you to pick up on what blayne was talking about and whether or not many of the places, including florida where you are, should rollback reopening which has taken place with bars and restaurants. >> good morning, kendis. thanks for having me. so, basically i want us to start thinking about how are we going to live with the virus? we're past the acute phase or transitioning into the chronic phase. these issues will not go anywhere. as long as the percentage of infections remain high and as long as we have widespread community transmission, we will continue to have the conversations next year and beyond. a lot of folks are thinking that this is just a temporary state of being and i need folks to realize this is our reality. we need to do better at controlling the virus. we are not getting the virus

under control. we still have the same arguments about reopening schools and closing down businesses. we need to focus on the public health aspect of this and then figure out how we will live with the virus in society. >> talk about the reopening the schools. many issues that you are facing in florida. the plan to reopen schools in florida to in-person learning is facing legal action. yesterday, you had the state's high school athletic board to vote to allow practices for fall sports to begin august 24th. that ignores the advice of medical experts. doctor, how concerned are you about the resumption of sports and in-person classes? >> let me address the sports issue right on. i am a cardiologist. we have actually seen data that the majority of patients with covid-19, a systsymptomatic, ths

evidence of heart inflammation that actually occurs weeks after the clearing of the infection. there is actual autopsy that shows the virus is in the heart muscle. we don't know what the long-term implications of the virus is. if we put kids out there, safety is number one. this virus has been around for less than 12 months and we don't know. absent the information, you want to err on the side of protecting the students. >> and sports? >> basically, we need to do our due diligence. as a father, would i let my son play? no. do i think the schools and school departments in the state of florida have done enough to investigate? no. until we can reassure parents

that kids are safe? the answer is no. >> that really is a decision. go ahead, doctor. >> i wanted to speak quickly to the fact that our wait times are still ridiculous. 10 to 14 days to get test results back frm. we don't have control of the virus. and we are focusing on warp speed for vaccine development and we cannot develop a testing procedure, this is ridiculous. i think we need to realign our priorities and focus on controlling the virus rather than focusing on reopening schools without a strategy. we have a lot of work to do. >> the cases are still on the rise. clearly in florida, it is considered the hot spot.

do you get a sense that the response in the state hasn't improved? >> compared to a few weeks ago, we are in a better position. do we have the virus under control? hell to the na. the virus is not under control. the virus is spreading. there is unchecked community spread right now. the fact our governor and leadership has not really appreciated that is ridiculous. we keep doing these piecemeal approaches. the governor agreed with me and said it is taking too long. he proceeds to open up two rapid testing sites here in south florida for just a specific population. everybody needs to have access to testing. everyone needs to get done within a day. we need to do better. i just can't -- i feel like i'm beat aing a dead horse. >> it is something, as you mentioned, we have to learn to live with, but even when we get a vaccine, we will have issues.

that poll that shows 35% of americans could not take a coronavirus vaccine if it was available right now. i'm not sure why that is. could that stat mean the virus would be with us for some time? >> i can tell you why that is. one, people have distrust of the health care system. especially people of color. blacks and latino. flu vaccine. those groups have a lower rate of vaccine utilization. the fact we have leadership and a president who is giving out misinformation and rapid development of vaccine with ineptness of controlling the pandemic. you put all that together and people will say no, i don't trust the government. a rational fear of the vaccine.

courtney. good morning. susan, let me start with you at 30 rock. the president amplifying the conspiracy theory. what does it say about the campaign? >> it says donald trump thinks it is 2016 all over again. this is what he does when he is campaigning. this is all he has in his playbook, kendis. he can't run on his record. what will he do? talk about how he is handling the coronavirus? that's not working. what does he do? he goes to his old tropes that are offensive. this time i think it will boomerang against him. in 2018, women came out in droves for the candidates, but also against donald trump. i think he will see that again.

precautions. gary grumbak live from the campus in elon north carolina. i know many, many students are angry about this. they say that the university has not prepared properly. and see this as premature. >> reporter: hey there, yeah this is a move in weekend unlike any other here at elon. this is the fourth time i've covered this event by three previous at a journalist on campus. when students come to campus they are first greeted with a temperature check for everybody in their car. they also have to make sure they have take ab covid test before they even get to campus and greeted with a goody bag of sorts here. this mask, hand sanitizer and some tissues. the a number of upper classmen who are not thrilled with the idea in fact held a protest a few days ago, urging the administration to reconsider the decision to hold inperson

classes. the freshman i talked to, as they r they were moving in yesterday with their parents they were frankly unfazed by the idea of inperson classes and unfazed by the idea of social distancing and mask wearing across campus. here is what some had to say. >> i think there is definitely some worry there that kids won't follow the rules and there will be an issue. but i think the school will handle it well. and that i'm not like too worried about it. honestly. >> reporter: there is going to be a tendency to let the guard down at some point. so you just got to i guess be careful and make sure you follow all the s.o.p.s. >> like a week before i was set to move in i was like are we coming back? are we really? yeah it's been hard to adjust to and i think there are worries in the back of everyone's minds about what happens if we do have an outbreak but i'm just kind of coming with the mind set of enjoying the time while i have it while also being safe as i can and encouraging my fellow students to do the same.
