senator harris will add to his candidacy, already assumed to have the lion's share of black support this year, if for no other reason than the opponent is donald trump. as team biden settles on a narrative for monday's democratic national convention, we know, as we always did, what the trump campaign's response will be to a black woman on the ticket. since tuesday president donald trump labeled the senator as a radical in the same vein as the rest of his democratic enemies. and because she's a woman, there's that term with him, but what is likely to trip trump up in his approach to harris has and will continue to be unsophisticated racism, a return to the birtherism that elevated

prepared for the 2020 race, senator kamala harris and i went to a well publicized lunch, or breakfast at world famous soul food restaurant sylvia's in harlem. and as we sat there, and i wanted to know her platform and her program and her strategy for her campaign, she really wanted to talk to me about shirley chisho chisholm, the first black woman who went to congress, who ran for president in 1972. and i was one of the youth coordinators of her campaign. i was just 18 years old, or would be 18 that october. she wanted to know what miss c. was like. that's what we called shirley chisholm, and what i learned from her and what she was up against, the miss song. >> and the racism. and i thought about miss c., shirley chisholm when joe biden announced that kamala harris would be the vice presidential candidate for the democratic party.

it was a long journey from a black woman who is also had caribbean descent in her background. ran for president to a daughter of a jamaican father, now being on the ticket, showing that we kept fighting and we kept dreaming. we went through mrs. c.'s campaign and jesse jackson's campaign that helped raise the issue of a woman on the ticket in geraldine ferraro was a result of that in 1984, all the way to winning with barack obama twice, both his election and reelection. never stopped. and at the same time, kept having the masses that would involve themselves in activism where we became the thermostats as those that would go in the rooms that the temperature was changed because those of us on the outside was turning up the heat, would go to places others

couldn't go. i know that mrs. c is looking at kamala harris knowing that it was all worthwhile, that now we have a black woman that has gone to the top of the ticket. that's why we won't stop being thermostats. that's why we're marching august 28th and the 57th anniversary of the march in washington. marching for the john lewis voting rights bill, marching for the george floyd and police justice bill, marching to keep our voices loud and clear that america can be great. it's not there yet for everybody, but it can be. we're going be covid-19 specific in all directions that day, but we're going to be there to stand up, because some of us know that without struggle, there is no progress. that does it for me. thanks for watching. i'll see you back here tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. eastern. up next, my colleague alicia menendez picks up our news coverage.
