should be at 6:00 in the morning. 7:00. we say good morning. we have a lot to get to. including the development over the showdown over the postal service which heads to capitol hill. house members will gather for a rare saturday vote. >> house democrats want to add a $25 billion injection into the postal service. they want to assure the postmaster general doesn't implement anymore changes this year. >> it comes after congress grilled louis dejoy who contradicted the president and insisted election mail will get delivered securely and on time. >> we have leann caldwell on the capitol hill. how is the white house reacting to it? >> reporter: good morning, cori and kendis. this is a rare saturday session. this is the middle of august. they came back from their august

recess, but they are trying to find the post office and give them $25 billion today. the house will vote on it later today. this comes amid republican opposition and republican leadership opposition, i should say, and fresh veto threat from the white house. the reason the post office needs money and this is a big deal is because the president has long said he has opposed funding for the post office. a couple of weeks ago, we started getting reports from people out in the country and postal workers who said their mail was being delayed. then, the president said just recently that the reason he opposes post office funding because it would assure the efficient delivery of election mail. in the middle of the pandemic when mail-in ballots are expected to sky rocket.

that setoff alarm bells here at capitol hill. this is coming at the same time the postmaster general, a trump donor, is coming under pressure for the changes he made to the post office in his short tenure so far. he was up at the homeland security committee yesterday. he said he was going to reverse some changes. here's what he said about this issue of overtime i want to play for you. take a listen. >> are you suspending your policy eliminating extra trips? yes or no. >> no. first of all, policy was not to eliminate extra trips. mitigate. >> are you limiting overtime or is that suspended right now and people work overtime if necessary to move the mail out every day? >> senator, we never eliminated overtime. >> curtailed significantly is what i understand? >> not been curtailed by me or our leadership team. >> reporter: he said he never

eliminated overtime. our colleague, geoff bennett obtained an internal memo from the post office which he did just that. that memo is fresh from july. there's a lot of skepticism especially from democrats on what the postmaster general is saying. despite him saying he promises election mail will be delivered and have a priority. the legislation the house democrats well vote on today an attempts to block any of the changes until at least the new year. it is only going to be a symbolic vote because the president, again, said he will veto it and senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says he has no plans to bring it up. kendis and cori. >> you see the blue boxes and sorting machines that have been removed. most promise to bring those back. leigh ann caldwell. thank you. now to decision 2020 and the

only area with this damage in california right now. >> reporter: just a slice of the destruction we are seeing in northern california. crews at this very moment as we speak are battling hundreds of wildfires all across the state. some of them are the biggest among ever recorded in state history. it has firefighters stretched incredibly thin here. overnight, the sprawl of more than 500 california wildfires surged in relentless march of flames. hardest hit is the north. the largest fires are churning through wine countries. reducing whole neighborhoods to pile of rubble and ash. >> oh, no. oh, no. >> reporter: chris lost most of her livestock. including horse and goat as the flames swept through her parents' ranch. >> the devastation is amazing.

on november 4th, they continue to hold congress and white house accountable for supporting them living their best lives. this was not unusual for president trump. he is a skilled orator. he is extremely passionate about service to the american public. we saw that there. >> i want to ask about the convention itself and the set up. what we saw in wilmington could have been held in wisconsin. there are a lot of business owners in wisconsin who are upset that lost out on thousands of dollars by not having the virtual convention held there. was that a big mistake? hillary clinton did not visit. they are sore from 2016. >> as i understand it, vice president biden's team has been on the ground in wisconsin and will be on the ground in wisconsin. >> he wasn't there. >> absolutely. >> so many people pointed that out after 2016. that should be a sensitive point.

they will consider today a measure that would provide funding for the postal service and set restrictions that operational changes could not take place. that is, of course, because of the concern of mail delays and how that affects mail-in ballots. and other things the postal service provides as well. the white house is threatening to veto this measure and it is not expected to move forward in the senate. this is a largely political pressure bill today. there is a lot of pressure to make certain the postal service can function and mail-in balloting can work and be trusted. the president's personal campaign against voting by mail is delivering plenty of tror controversy. >> they all think i'm trying to steal the election. i want the fair result. >> reporter: the unusual. on a summer saturday. congress is back in d.c. to vote

now to the front lines at a houston hospital where a father/son doctor duo has turned battling the coronavirus into a family fight. father and son are emergency room physicians at memorial herman hospital in houston. welcome to both of you. there you are. texas has more than 600,000 cases of covid-19 in harris county, that county leads the state. what has it been like on the

front lines there? >> we're busy. lots of patients, swimming in covid. >> still to this point? >> things have eased up. i know the cases are down, but from an emergency medicine doctor's standpoint, you go to work, there's a lot of people to see, irrespective of what's wrong with them. >> dr. michael, what are you seeing when it comes to people displaying symptoms. we've heard there's new symptoms that are being detected. are you seeing the same thing at the hospital? >> there's such a wide range when people ask me could this be covid? a lot of it is maybe. a lot of big things are clots in the lungs, stroke, heart attack. but just, you know, lots of things that we can't predict. lots of rashes. a range of symptoms. it's so broad. we're learning more every day,

every week. >> it's quite unusual to v. family members working at the same hospital. here we have father and son. you both work at the same hospital. it wasn't until this week that the two of you worked together. take me through what that must have been like for you guys and for your patients especially during a global pandemic? >> from my perspective, i just struggle between being the proud father and the emergency room doctor. but we got to work together and resuscitate a critical patient. that was a total rush. and then, yeah, we're there. just professionals and we're not really father and son, we're dr. torrey and dr. torrey. >> do you question some of michael torrey's calls? >> absolutely not. >> what about you, michael?

you learned your dad came on board -- well, he was already there. obviously it was a surprise to you as we understand it. >> it was a great experience. a lot of it, yeah, we're just kind of doing our shift, seeing each other walking around, but we did get the opportunity to work hand in hand with someone who needed a lot of help. it was pretty surreal. it was so smooth, we did what we needed to do. we did it together. it was great. >> it is probably a surreal moment as you mentioned for your family to be working there with your dad, especially during a global pandemic. michael, this has really been a tough, tough couple of months for many people there in texas. do you see a light at the end of the tunnel at all? >> yeah. we'll get through this. it's been pretty stressful, people are scared. people are anxious. lots of people are coming in
