danieldan prude's name. >> the 41-year-old man stopped breathing during the c confrontation back in march. he died after being taken off life support a week later. >> the rochester mayor suspended seven police officers with pay. prude's death intensified the issue over officers responding to mental health crises. and ahead of the kentucky derby, the location has been highlighted as a symbol of history of inequality and segregation. holding the derby today is insensitive and a distraction for racial justice. >> gabe gutierrez is there for us now. gabe, last night was the 100th night of protest for breonna taylor. it has been 176 days since she was shot and killed by police. give us a sense of what it is

like on the ground there now. >> reporter: good morning. cori and garrett. this is how it is like here on the ground. much of downtown louisville is boarded up. you mentioned 100 days of protests. 100 days. activists and advocates are frustrated and furious that the kentucky derby is happening. it is supposed to happen several months ago, but postponed because of the pandemic. now as you mentioned, thousands of protesters are expected here in louisville later today. could be counter protesters as well. because of that, kentucky state police and local authorities are here with a heavy security presence. armored vehicles and fencing to funnel protesters and try to prevent clashes that residents fear could escalate around the kentucky derby. there have been a lot of developments in the case over the past several weeks.

there were reports and breonna taylor's family's lawyer said they were trying to get her ex-boyfriend to try to implicate her in a drug ring. the family is furious about that. many protesters here are demanding the officers be charged. one has been fired and none face criminal charges so far. a lot of anticipation over what happens later today during the running of the kentucky derby. iconic american institution will be facing a lot of protests this afternoon and evening. back to you. >> gabe, can you put more context on this? the kentucky derby is an institution, but on the other hand, 100 straight days of protests. this story never left the news. what is the divide like in louisville? what is the feeling like? give us more context of what it is like in that city right now. >> reporter: certainly. it is a very devastated city. you can see so much of the city is boarded up. a genuine fear of when this will

end and what will happen if these officers do not face any charges. yes, garrett, you mentioned 170 something days since it happened in march since the raid happened where breonna taylor was shot. her boyfriend at the time thought it was an intruder and it was actually police. getting a no-knock warrant to go in the apartment. the police say they have announced themselves. the boy disputes that. there have been protesters out for the last 100 days. at times it has turned violent and deadly. since then, peaceful protests during the day and there has been conflict during the night as other parts of the country. garrett, the breonna taylor case rose to prominence in the aftermath of george floyd's death. breonna taylor's death happened several months before. her name, along with george

floyd and now jacob blake say rally cry for social justice around the country. there is a great sense of frustration it has taken so long for a decision to come in this case about any potential charges for the officers. this is another flash point tonight on the kentucky derby. we will have to see if it remains peaceful. >> gabe gutierrez for us live in louisville. we will watch. gabe, stay safe. to the growing backlash over the comments of fallen and injured troops. the president pushing back against allegations he referred to killed and injured soldiers as suckers and losers. >> we have kelly o'donell nell the white house. >> reporter: we have john kelly, because he was present during

2018 trip to paris with the president. that is why there was discussion of the veterans. the reports attribute behind the scenes officials without naming john kelly. john kelly has not come forward to dispute or make a comment which raised the question about what did he know and was he a witness to that. the president was asked about this during a briefing and john kelly was a four-star marine general and had a son, robert, who died in iraq and was visi d visited. john kelly in the report and visiting the grave with the president of his son. why would they volunteer to serve is the comment the president made. the president denies the story and now this story is taking on

the president is beicritical ofm at time the president is saying disparaging things about the service members. the president not taking the opportunity there to at least acknowledge kelly's service. the president pushing back and so has his wife melania on tw s twitter. several officials were around the president and they don't believe he said these things. part of it makes it politically potent for the president is other occasions and settings, publicly with cameras on, he has been critical of the service of john mccain or gold star families like the khans. that is why there is a line connecting the comments behind-the-scenes. the president denies it. there are multiple reports about it making it a controversial story. >> something tells me we will hear more today.

early or i want to mail in my ballot or how can i safely vote on election day? outlining those things to them. of course, something important to know is that they announced huge fund raising haul in august. over $364 million which they say gives them enough confidence to be able to not only devote more money to battleground states, but own the air waves. we saw that earlier this week with just one day alone where they were able to put out five new national ads targeting groups they had already identified and they believe they will do well. also what they really see in the next couple weeks is trying to not gain any defection or erosion from the base and hoping to expand and keep it so they don't lose voters that voted for president trump and now swinging

reporting. as kelly noted earlier, the language does fit with the language the president used in the past. specifically his desk pisparagi comments about john mccain and the gold star family in 2016. the context doesn't look good for the president. he has been able to weather a lot of these stories that have come out from former administration officials which aides point to. the thing is the military has been a big part of his administration. we'll have to wait and see if this hurts standing with mechanics of the military and vae investiga veterans. one thing we will see is more of these stories especially with cohen's and woodward's books

thinking this is what the commander in chief said? this is political season. those soldiers have to continue to do their mission regardless of the election. it is discouraging because the president audio and video don't match. he said respect the military and went to the pentagon and told the generals they were a bunch of losers. he used the word in addressing one of our recent heroes, senator mccain, after captured and kept in a prison camp for years that he likes his heroes not to be captured. he said disparaging remarks of the khan family who lost their son in the war. he has weaponized words. his audio and video don't match.

two party convention. >> joe biden leads as low as 7 points to high as 11 points. joining us now is susan del percio. a member of lincoln women. a coalition within the lincoln project and morgan chalafont. how do the numbers compare with the past selection? do you think there is a false sense of security for the biden ca ca camp? >> from what i hear, the biden campaign does not have a false sense of security. what is important to remember about the national polls is that president trump was elected based on state by state. that means the electoral college. the state by state polls are more important. national polls do two things. one, helps set the narrative which means people are hearing

biden is ahead and it is good and reinforces it. it helps with fund raising. there is one other polil i like to throw in that from the military times. it has biden leading 41% to trump's 37%. no republican has ever been elected in recent times without the majority of military and veteran support. >> i want to talk about the battleground states more. morgan, a bunch of polls from fox news. biden, plus nine in arizona. plus eight in wisconsin. plus four in north carolina. pennsylvania, more of a mixed picture. plus eight in one poll. plus four in another. talk about the different strategies as the candidates hone in on these states in particular? >> biden has ramped up his campaign activity going to wisconsin this week.

he has appearances in michigan. trump is traversing the country. he focused on north carolina and trying to drive home the message and trying to tie biden to the left-wing party. >> and as president trump ramps up public safety messaging, he is saying no one would be safe under a biden presidency. there is a poll out showing biden is leading trump 58% to 35% among suburban voters. susan, is this evidence that the president's message is not resonating with the key group he needs? >> it is. because the difference is as trump is trying to do this law and order message. i will tamp down the violence in the big cities. he s he is adding fuel to the fire. suburban voters are looking for

safety. he stoked the flames for political reasons. >> polling shows voters will feel more safe in a biden presidency than trump presidency. the poll is 51% to 45%. saying this is an edge for biden. morgan, does the trump white house and campaign say this strategy is not working and we should try something else or say we are down six and let's keep hammering it. >> i think they have been hammering it every appearance that trump makes. this is the theme of his message. they cast doubt on the polls. it doesn't seem to be changing strategy at all. he is sticking to this. traveling to wisconsin this week and not meeting with the blake family or not talking about the racial protests and racial injustice. he is betting on it. >> this is an interesting prediction. democratic data and firm

hawkfish told axios said president trump would have won an election by a landslide on election night. the model predicting that trump could hold that lead. if 15% of vote by mail ballots had been counted days later once every vote is in, they could see that lead shifting to biden who becomes the winner. what do you make of that is scenario, susan? >> it is good that the message is getting out there and people know things won't be decided on election night. traditionally we say that paper of absentee ballot follow the machines. unless someone has done a great job of absentee ballots which republicans are a great campaign tends to follow. we know because that will be skewed by the amount of absentee ballots coming in and in some

cases 40% or 50% of states voting absentee, we have to wait and see what the results are. in some place in upstate new york, the buffalo area, there was on election day in a primary that half the votes counted had one candidate leading. after the paper, the other candidate won the election. >> there is a very clear delineation between how you democrats are voting versus republicans. susan and morgan, thank you both. president trump has commented about the poisoning about the russian opposition leader. does he blame the kremlin? the president has yet to condemn russia and it nags the question why. russia and it nags the ques why. into a smaller life?

a lot of acgents i talked to sa we have an i mperfect view of te putin mind. we are not always perfect in judging his intent. if you are russia right now, you are looking at the united states and seeing the president who is obviously reluctant and allergic to criticizing publicly putin specifically and really behavior out of moscow in general. you are also seeing an american public clearly with no appetite for military conflict right now. you need to look no further than the fact that bringing troops home from afghanistan was a campaign issue on both the left and right this year. i think if you are moscow, you know, when you think about how you will achieve your national objectives, you can push that line further than you might otherwise think you would be able to when you combine the two dynamics. that is what i hear from the

. with just 59 days until the election, a reminder about our interactive guide. it has everything you need to know about how to vote where you live, including the first day you can cast your ballot. speaking of, north carolina is the first state to begin voting for the november election. yesterday the election board sent hundreds of thousands of mail-in ballots to voters across the state. >> jordan jackson is life in winston salem, north carolina. how is the state getting ready for this influx of ballots? >> they have drastically scaled up, and election officials tell me they tried to start as early as possible. we're already seeing record breaking totals in this state. almost 17 times the number of ballot requests compared to 2016. election officials tell me they're feeling it.

one county director put some of these numbers into context for us. take a listen to what he said. >> we got over 100,000 requests right now. and, you know, we're processing them daily. what we've seep in the past is nowhere near this the most amount we had requested in its entirety was 2016, that was only 34,000. we're already at over 100,000. >> now, this director said he is working closely with the post office, but he encourages voters if they plan to vote by mail, that they do so early. all of this comes just as this week the president urged voters here in north carolina to test the system, if you will, by trying to vote twice. officials here at north carolina pushed back on some of those calls from the president and actually late thursday of just this week an orange banner appeared on the state's election
