we want to share an update. we're excited about here around the beat. senator elizabeth warren is back on the program. it's going to be a special interview. because it's heading into tomorrow's historic vice president debate. of course she knows some of the people on the. we're looking forward to it. join us 6:00 p.m. eastern tomorrow. as for now it's the "the reidout" with joy reid. >> donald trump. the reality television president. went to extreme lengths to spin his failure to contain the coronavirus. a fill yur so thorough, he couldn't even protect his wife. his staff. his press secretary. members of the united states senate. the military members and secret service agents sworn to protect
4:01 pm
him or himself. from catching it. and so, at least 18 people connected to the trump white house are now infected. late today we learn that steven miller, senior adviser to the president tested positive. but what trump wants you to take from that is the spin that he faced the coronavirus head on and beat it. you should revere him and stop fearing the coronavirus. trump doesn't want you to know reality tv especially the one about his presidency is fake. the apprentice was fake. he wasn't that rich or successful. all that trump rhetoric, scripted. both photo ops and visuals orchestrated. at great risk to photographers and innocent people. he's highly contagious. with an active infection of covid-19. infected for we don't know how many days. while that is being packaged and
4:02 pm
produced to create a version of trump who is capable and healthy and strong, that is fooling no one. everyone outside of the assumes trump is sicker than he's letting on. coronavirus isn't just coursing through the 7.5 million americans most of whose name you don't know. and killed more than 211,000 americans. all of whom trump and his party have ignored. since march. it's also surging through congress. and through the white house. with a fourth press staffer in addition to press secretary, testing positive today. as well as a trump military valet. who came into contact with trump testing pose over the weekend. senior military officials including chairman of the choint chief of staff are in quarantine. after exposure. and to the infected president. what trump hoped to hide during his american balcony stunt.
4:03 pm
he was having trouble breathing. just like he wants to hide he's not in control of the virus. or election that he's desperate to win. trump is falling even further blind biden in battleground states that highway neee needs . he's clearly afraid. of not just the virus hurting him. he's afraid of you. he's afraid of voters. early voting is shattering records this election season. fuelled by a big mail in ballot lead for democrats. more than 4.2 million people have already voted. in this presidential election. they're coming out in droves. look at this line outside in ohio. wow. while in virginia, 700,000 people voted early. with additional 700,000 already voting in florida. with nearly 400,000 of them
4:04 pm
being democrats. trump knows he's losing. look at that line. full stop. he's losing. rather than acknowledge the seriousness of the infection. the only hope for his to turn the campaign around. he is embracing his identity as a confirmed super spreader putting people and families at risk. from the secret service agents forced to drive in the sealed vehicle for his photo op. and his democratic opponent who he plans to face in person in nine days. white house staff forced to work for the president they say shouldn't be afraid of the coronavirus. despite not having a healthcare privilege only the sitting president enjoys. it is insane he would return to the white house and jeopardize his staff. a white house source said. adding this place is a ses pool.
4:05 pm
joining me now. white house correspondent. internal physician and an opinion writer for the "new york the people who work in the white house who are not political. >> i have been talking to people who work in the white house for the last couple days. people are freaking out. therest no way to really talk or exaggerate how scared people are. it's mayhem. people are worried and lining up to get tested. they don't know who could be exposed. there's no telling when the president last tested negative. the white house is refusing to provide information. and a contact tracing the white house is not want the cdc and
4:06 pm
health officials to really weigh in outside of them. they have this in house epidemiologist contact tracing. chris christy is hospitalized and never heard from the white house about bt coronavirus contact tracing. it's a white house that is has a virus coursing through it. and the president falsely saying it's like the flu. we know it killed five times the amount of people the flu has in the last five years. killed more than that. it's really remarkable that the president is continuing to talk about this and trying to project strength. when so many people in the white house are scared. >> they should be. donald trump has a highly lethal infection disease and he's walking around and pulling his mask off. as for the contact tracing rk the white house said no to the cdc. which is the agency that could do it. they will not be assisting them
4:07 pm
allowing to assist with contact tracing. i reached out yesterday, just about watching donald trump do his moment. people started noticing he appeared to be laboring in breathing. at one point he pit his hand on his diaphragm. like he was wincing in pain. he was trying to look like a tough guy. he looked like a sick elderly man with make up on. that's what he looked like. i want to direct you to a tweet. he's not a doctor but put out a time line. it says here, herman cane. a trump ally to the end of his life. he got sick on 6/24. attended a trump rally with no mask. tested positive on the second of july. by the 30th he was dead. in between the 2nd and 30th he
4:08 pm
said he was feeling better. i don't know the doctor sent him home thought he was fine. he ended up dying. trump tweeted out and said people shouldn't be afraid. made a video. people shouldn't be afraid of the coronavirus. that tweet was considered so egregious facebook and twitter took it down. it is false. kp they reacted. facebook is pretty liberal about letting him say whatever he wants. how much danger is he in prognosis. and how much danger is his staff? >> great to see you. when he was standing on top of where ever that was, i looked at that video many times. shortness of breath they think of huffing and puffing. you don't see that. what you can see is he's using the accessory muscles. labored breathing. he's using these muscles to
4:09 pm
breathe. for people like you and i not having trouble breathing, we don't need to use those. he is clearly using those. the point you made yesterday, he had somebody else apply the make up. somebody had to get close enough to him. to your point, the president said something to the fact the effect of look at me i'm better. he had access to some of the most world class state of the art experimental medication. hospital. specialist. doctors. personal transportation. security. all of this is to encapsulate one worpd. that is privilege. that is something the 7 million infected patients people in this country do not have. something the 210,000 people and
4:10 pm
counting who have died including mr. cane did not have. it's not something -- it's lack of access that most people in the country don't have access to just good old fashion healthcare. and we already know that over 80% of the people who died have been elderly. black, brown and native american people are disproportionately infected. what is he doing to reassure them. what i want to hear as a doctor is wear this. this will save your life. keep physical distancing. that will save your life. >> how much danger is he? he's actively infected and contagious. how much of a physical threat does he pose to the people in the white house? >> something else i didn't get to. the next coming days he's far
4:11 pm
from being out of the woods. he got a steroid which is going to make anyone feel better in the short term. in the long term in a few days, who knows what will happen. he needs to be closely monitored. and of course he's infectious. he should be in isolation. which means none of the photo op non-sense gigs in isolation far away from people. mask. and good hand hygiene. that needs to happen. >> yeah. joe biden gave a speech today. it was presidential. here he was talking about the virus itself. >> this pandemic is not a red state or blue state issue. this virus doesn't care whether you live or where you live. what political party you belong to. it infects us all and take anyone's life.
4:12 pm
it's a virus. it's not a political weapon. >> he also made a statement over twitter. make no mistake if you are out of work and your business is closed. if your child's school is shut down. trump decided none of that matters. he needs to rip off mask and do video ts. let me contrast that with the mike pence. the head of the coronavirus task force. he mocked senator kamala harris. for wanting to have a screen between herself and him. and he's been around the infectious president. he said if she wants a fortress around herself have at it. as if he's a macho statement. the politics around this seem clear. they seem clearly horrible for trump already losing an election. can you make any sense of them digging deeper into this strategy? of ignoring the coronavirus. >> i don't know that it's a strategy. for donald trump.
4:13 pm
so much as a psychological or that he can't break out of. donald trump could have if he was a completely different person, said my experience battling this terrible disease has shown me something about what the country is going through and given me empathy for the 7 million people in the country who had to fight it. if he was capable of doing that, he wouldn't be the person that he is. this is a person who is narcissism. even gets in the way of self-interest. who need above all to be seen as strong and invulnerable. and approach to this disease all along has been this propaganda of the deed. to basically say we're going it say the disease is totally under control. and not that dangerous. and then to animate that lie. they were going to act like it.
4:14 pm
they were going to demand people around him act like it. even at the cost of their own lives in danger. it's interesting that quote about mocking kamala harris demands for a greater safety at the debate. it comes from katy miller. who is married to steven miller. who just tested positive today. after testing negative for several days. the idea that mike pence is out of the woods because he has tested negative so far. or that kamala harris is safe being on the stage with him with no barrier. is it's kind of completely disproven by the situation of her husband. >> yeah. @press core obviously has been put at risk. press secretary refuses a mask. i wonder if if the media at some point if the correspondent association says we don't want anyone near this guy.
4:15 pm
>> i think it's a tough position to be in. if you become a journalist and you understand this, you have this mission and white house correspondent you have a mission to represent the american people. and press for so many answers because this is an administration that needs to be held accountable. and at times in person. that's when you can get them on camera on the record to answer tough questions. including why aren't you doing more to help americans as the federal reserve chairman says if you don't help and if congress doesn't do something we'll get even further into this. there won't been an economic recovery. reporters myself included are constantly balancing putting at risk and going to the white house. for me when i go there i make sure i mask. i'm distancing and staying outside. people are clearly being put at risk. and people are very angry. i can't imagine a apart from a
4:16 pm
journalist the people cleaning the white house. feeding the president food. the people cleaning the bathroom. there's a host of people that we don't see apart from journalist that are exposed to this. >> do you know whether or not inside the white house people who -- donald trump doesn't like people in masks. are the people who clean the white house and the people who serve him food the butlers are they allowed to wear masks? do you know? >> the white house in a statement said anyone that was going to be around president trump is wearing a mask. that's what they're telling us. this is a white house with a credibility issue. president trump being contagious took off his mask. he had a photographer within feet of him. that person was at risk. they're saying everyone around the president is masked, who knows if that's true. >> michelle, last quote to you. it sound like the trump campaign has been over. they're not doing a campaign
4:17 pm
anymore. for whatever reason. it is at this point just a cult of personality. i wonder how you run against that. it isn't even a campaign anymore. i still think as much as it looks like they're in a tail spin and see trump salting the ground as he retreats by refusing to pass the desperately needed covid-19 stadium l stimulus saying it's not on the table until after the election. it's hard to think of a worse closing message besides coronavirus will make you feel like you're 20 years younger. at the same time, i don't think anybody should be complacent. as bad as the polls are for them, people should run democrats have to run as if they are behind. they have to remember the lesson of 2016.
4:18 pm
even though 2020 is not an exact parallel. and seems like joe biden has done a really good job of sort of staying out of the way. when your opponent seems to be imploeding. >> yeah. stay away from donald trump. as far as possible. run through the tape. that's what they tell me in track. thank you all. please stay safe. trump says don't be afraid. don't let it dominate your life. tell it to millions who lost jobs. or the 211,000 families who lost lovered ones. two of them join me next. why is the president in utah? shouldn't pence be in washington running the government? michelle obama closing argument for electing joe biden. >> let's be honest, right now our country is in chaos.

because of a president who isn't up to the job. the "the reidout" kocontinues after this. after this i just found out about mine. i knew for years. epclusa has a 98% overall cure rate. i had no symptoms of hepatitis c mine caused liver damage. epclusa is only one pill, once a day, taken with or without food for 12 weeks. before starting epclusa, your doctor will test if you have had hepatitis b, which may flare up, and could cause serious liver problems during and after treatment. tell your doctor if you have had hepatitis b, other liver or kidney problems, hiv, or other medical conditions... ...and all medicines you take, including herbal supplements. taking amiodarone with epclusa may cause a serious slowing of your heart rate. common side effects include headache and tiredness. ask your doctor today, if epclusa is your kind of cure.

trump is down played the virus from the very beginning despite the reality on the ground. >> it's a very contagious virus. it's incredible. but it's something that we have tremendous control of. >> mass casualty incident that won't stop. >> the country wants to get back to work. our country was built to get back to work. >> i'm without a job in march. >> we met the moment. and we have prevailed. we have done an incredible job. >> people get laid off. people have losing their apartments. people are out here dying. >> the doctors are tired. we're tired of it.
4:24 pm
nobody wants to keep doing it. we're not done yet. >> don't let it dominate your life. >> no one is letting it. they didn't let it. it wasn't a choice. and it dominated his life. it dominated my life. our families life. for 95 days and because he didn't make it effected my life. >> i'm joined now by long beach, california mayor who lost his mother and stepfather to coronavirus. and she lost her mom to the virus. thank you for being here. you are stronger than me to come on and talk about this. i really truly appreciate it. mayor, you first. mayor garcia. trump says don't worry about it. don't let it dominate your life. he feels better than he has in 20 years. he's 73 years old. he's one of the 7.5 million people who have coronavirus.
4:25 pm
he's lucky because 211,000 people have died. what do you say back to him when he says it's all good? >> i think his response especially the last few days have been totally shameful. completely beneath any president of the united states. he's treating this virus like it's nothing. and somehow has put no value on the people who died including my two parents. he is acting like somehow he's a warrior and his family is calling him a warrior. the people that died have just as much value as he does. the irresponsibility he has shown putting others at risk. it's really hard to see. it's been hard to see. he had an opportunity to make an example. and show some leadership. after being getting the virus and instead he's exact opposite. he's made things worse. and he's actually making it more dangerous in the country every day.

>> yeah. your mom was a medical assistant. from peru. she's one ocht people who we need to be solving this crisis. can you talk about -- there we see a picture of your beautiful mom. healthcare professionals are not even immune from this. they have also died and been sickened. this is a time when it should be all hands on deck. as a mayor, someone responsible for a sni this country, what are you doing different? how are you communicating with your city as to what they should be doing to protect themselves? >> i have grown up around clinics and hospitals my whole life. my mom was a healthcare worker. until she passed recently. what healthcare workers and doctors will tell you this is a very serious virus. and that people that contract covid-19 need to stay quarantined or stay in the hospital.

by donald trump going around taking joyrides and back to the white house and taking his mask off he's a serious threat to public health. what waer trying to do is tell people to stay safe, trump makes it harder every day too keep people safe. locally and encourage people to wear masks. >> yeah. let me bring you in. your mom was a chicago public schoolteacher. somebody another person incredible essential. to the society. doing the great work of teaching. she passed just weeks after going back to school. you have also taught at chicago public school. your mom taught there for two decade. she was a teacher. do you feel that our public schools would have been safer and the students and teachers would have been safer, your mom
4:28 pm
would have been safer had the president done something different. and what would that have been in your mind? >> absolutely. as we can see he's making light of the situation. not only just my mother get covi, she went to work. and she came home and she gave it to my father and myself and my sister. now if the schools would have been safe and sanitized and had proper equipment. and appropriate amount of staff, that wouldn't happen. i would have my mother. i no longer have that. if cps had the funding and everything to provide the proper things, we wouldn't be in this situation. >> yeah. we know that in illinois there have been 307,000 cases. 9,000 deaths in the stay. including your mom. unemployment soared to 11% in
