this election. thanks to both of you. >> thank you. >> appreciate it. thanks to everyone at home watching the beat. i hope you have a great weekend. i'll be back monday night 6:00 p.m. eastern. find me online. instagram and twitter. rite now keep it locked it's joy reid. >> today with nearly every u.s. state now officially a coronavirus hot spot. 78 million americans will reminded why they decided to vote for joe biden. the president-elect released a presidential statement. urging hope during this worsening crisis saying i know people are tired. this will not go on forever. and adding that urgent action is needed totd.
4:01 pm
now. starting with acknowledgment of how serious the current situation is. today the leader of the current administration addressed the nation. emerging from the white house where he's been stewing for a week. and hiding from the shame of becoming a one term president. that acknowledgment that never happened. instead the antiscience president took credit for breakthrough therapy. making sure to dangle the vaccine before a democratic governor who didn't play nice. and something like this. >> we won't go to a lock down. i will not go. this add mirs will not go to lock down. hopefully the whatever happens in the future who knows, which administration it will be. time will tell. >> which administration do you mean, sir? 950,000 covid infections have been reported.
4:02 pm
7,500 americans have died. look at this devastating map. covid is exploding. to new levels across the country. hospitals are again at full capacity. with schools and the economy in chaos. trump infected his own family. leadership and staff. and 130 secret service members are infected because he needed big rallies. he continues to ignore the reality of the pandemic he's ignoring the reality of the histor historic loss to joe biden. his refusal to concede is not just a threat to tradition but but democracy. something president obama addressed. >> when donald trump won. i stayed up until 2:30 in the morning and called. to congratulate him. his margin of victory over clinton wasn't greater than joe biden margin over him.
4:03 pm
the peaceful transfer of power, the notion that any of us who attain an elected office, whether it's dogcatcher or president. are servants of the peep. it's a temporary job. we're not above the rules or law. that's the essence of democracy. >> joining me now biden campaign senior adviser. great to see you. congratulations to the campaign. i can officially say that to you now. the election is over. peacefully hand power over to the birther who pushed the conspiracy theory he wasn't even really a president. he managed to do too. all the presidents who lost. they managed to do it. on and on. this is i want to play a bit of the way the current administration is behaving.
4:04 pm
a whole week plus after they lost the election. >> we're moving forward here at the white house. there will be a second trump term. >> it would look bad if he didn't attend the inauguration. sour grapes, wouldn't it? >> the president will attend his own inauguration. he would have to be there, in fact. >> as irritating and silly and embarrassing. walk us through how much it is complicating the work that you all have to do to plan to govern. >> thank you for having me. it's always great to be here with you. those clips you showed i think might be concerning for a number of people across the country. they are wondering if the current president of the united states is not recognizing what's happening. what does that mean for the democracy. is in fact in tact.
4:05 pm
and president-elect joe biden transition is moving forward. would we like a concession from the current president of the united states, yes. it's the presidential thing to do the right thing to do. it's something that is a hallmark of the democracy. presidents whether democrat or republican have participated in the peaceful transition of power for years. and that is really an under score and foundation of who we are as america. you saw not just the statement from president-elect biden today. he was meeting with his covid-19 task force today. earlier this week he announced the task force and did a briefing. he and vice president-elect kamala harris were meeting and talking about the aca. affordable care act and what they would do in the add mirs to protect preexisting condition. president-elect announced his

4:07 pm
we have ran out the conversation that the president-elect had with former president bush. and we haven't read out the other conversations because it requires two parties to agree to do that. we'll respect -- >> you're saying senators. republican senators have done that. >> yes, joy. republican senators. sitting y sitting united states senators, yes. >> joining me now. michael steel. senior adviser for the lincoln project. and former obama campaign manager. you heard her say that republican senators are calling but it requires two people to agree to let it out. what does it say about the republican party that these people are too aafraid to go public and say the obvious that joe biden is the president-elect of the united states. >> it says what it's been saying for four years.
4:08 pm
they are hostage to one person. i appreciate the fact they made the overture to the president-elect directly. that bodes well. youns get the obstacle and obvious problem out of the way, you can probably see a sort of thawing if you will, of the relationship that is going to be that needed to be formed in order to tackle the big things ahead. if a senator sitting senator republican senator wants to make the private call and ask the vice president not to disclose the call is made, that's fine. what that says is joe biden now knows he has someone to work with when he becomes officially the president of the united states. and can maybe at that point the phone call will be revealed. i'm not going to make much more of in a negative way. than that. we know what the obstacle is. and as soon as that is gone, we

4:10 pm
if you are dealing with governors and senators like that. >> my sense is you'll get a corporation on the vaccine. they bought into the story that trump was going to deliver a vaccine ahead of the election. yes, the issue here is we need universal social distancing. mask wearing. many states not the ones you mentioned are putting out strict guidelines around holiday gatherings. that's the challenge. we're in this together. joe biden is so skilled, he's got a high eq. successful through the career working across the aisle. heel have to find a governor like gnome who just refuses despite all the evidence. maybe she'll be supportive of the economic are leaf. you'll have to find your areas. the question is when you think about this period, we expected this from trump. tragically. is this the only time in the next ten to 20 years we have
