5:07 am
minot is the especially center of of it. it is a paragon of the crisis and underestimated rural spread and overburdened hospital system. mayor, good to see you. i know it is busy for you right now. we appreciate the time you are taking. what has happened in minot? you have seen a remarkable jump in cases. you had 1,400 last week. at the beginning of october, you had 11. >> good morning. we had more than 11, i think, as a backlog has taken place. what you are seeing here is what is happening around the country. the weather got colder in many cases and here rather than in the south where it was wormwarmn the summer. we anticipated the spike in the winter time to pretty much mirror what a lot of the experts
5:08 am
said. i think what we have seen here is a lot of folks that are hard working individuals that may not have taken this as serious as this may have been early on and right now we are involved with everything one else trying to get the mask mandates further followed and getting people to take this spread of the coronavirus serious. >> you are right, mayor. i misread my numbers. 174 cases at the beginning of october. it went to 1,400. deaths were 11 at the beginning of october. since then, 94 deaths. talk to me about the mask mandate. there's been an unusual difficulty in getting it out there and getting it done finally and then having people take seriously it needs to be done. part of the issue with the mandates, they are meant to be encouragements. you don't have police evnforcin it, but they are meant to take
5:09 am
this seriously. this is a problem you have in north dakota. >> i think you take a look at the upper midwest. that is what we are seeing across montana or minnesota or north dakota or south dakota. it is upper midwest where you have a group of a large population who are very dependent individuals and resilient individuals. trying to get folks to come around to the issue that masks are meant to protect others. this is a community. we fought through and overcome natural disasters in minot and fargo and to get them to understand it is a component. not just the solution that masks go along with the hand sanitizing and general hygiene and awareness of not being around large groups or in large gatherings. we can help mitigate this spread.
5:10 am
that is one of the biggest, i think, mental blocks to overcome for people. this is not others. this is community effort. little things we do can make a heck of a difference as we see the hospitals that are at or near capacity. not just in minot, but across north dakota and the midwest as the numbers have been spiking. we wihen we saw our death rates increase, that is simply because it got into our nursing homes like we saw across the country early on in the covid spread. looking at a 1.5% mortality rate in the county, which is a population of 67,670 people. certainly, not a huge number, but higher than anyone would like. that is what we are really trying to get around our hands around and back under control. >> so mayor, we are eight months in and obviously north dakota doesn't feel like eight months because we are in the northeast had it more severely early on.
