evolve your home security. get the peace of mind, safety and convenience of xfinity home. and don't forget to catch the croods, a new age in theaters thanksgiving. rated pg. good day, every one from msnbc world headquarters here in new york. welcome to weekends here with alex witt. here is what's happening right now. president-elect joe biden is counting down to taking office
11:01 am
in just 6 0 days while president trump is holding onto his job for dear life. the president's increasingly desperate and so far, unsuccessful legal ma moneuvers suffered a double blow. on friday the state of georgia certified biden's win and two michigan republican lawmakers met with trump at the white house and say they don't see anything that would change the outcome. this as president-elect biden plans to meet with advisers today while formal transition proceedings hang in bureaucratic limbo. new reporting says announcements on two key cabinet roles are expected next week. today a virtual g-20 summit is under way. president trump sitting on some of those meetings. making his final appearance as u.s. president on the world stage but not participate in the meeting focused on pandemic preparedness. he was at his golf course. this comes against the backdrop
11:02 am
of a nightmare health crisis in the u.s. as the coronavirus pandemic escalates at rapid speed this morning. the number of cases in the u.s. surpassing 12 million. we're going to go over the days top political stories with this hour's team of reporters. it's supposed to happen officially when. what's this all about? >> if at first you toents succeed, try, try again. the president was unsuccessful in winning the majority of votes inmy michigan coming in. then he tried this purchase campaign on state legislative leaders that came to the white house yesterday but emerged to release a statement saying we have not been made aware of any information that would change the outcome of the election in michigan and has legislative leaders, we will follow the law and follow the normal process
11:03 am
regarding michigan's electors. today we heard a letter from the state's gop chair as well as the chairwoman of the national republican party urging the state's canvassers not to go ahead an certify the election results when they meet on monday but instead calling for a 14-day delay while they are seeking an audit, the results in wayne county where there's a lot of votes in the detroit area for president-elect joe biden. we are already hearing from the secretary of state's office which says the process is very clear. that certification should go forward and warning that there are legal requirements on these canvassers that they perform their duty and adhere to the will of the voters in michigan. >> okay, josh letterman. thank you for that from the white house. let me ask you one quick question with regard to the g-20. there's this virtual thing going on, it's kcovering a bunch of
11:04 am
topics. where is the president's focus right now? is it elsewhere? is it on the golf course? >> the president made clear he's not a big fan of these big multi-national forums like the g-20. we did see him briefly on this web cam version of the g-20 that's being hosted by saudi arabia. he didn't speak this morning during the opening session. the president was shooting off tweets about a purported election fraud and then there was a break out session focused on coronavirus and pandemics. we saw the leaders germany, many other countries but the president had left the white house to head to his golf course in virginia where he's been wrapping up. >> thank you for that from d.c. let's go to wilmington, delaware. joe biden reportedly close now to making a couple of koe piey to his cabinet.
11:05 am
>> reporter: they remain in place of bureaucratic limbo because the general services administration still has yet to certify or send a letter of ascertainment about the election results. they are still pushing forward on personnel and on policy. on the personnel front, we saw this week a string of west wing appointments made for senior positions there. starting the fill those holes throughout the white house. then it's speculation season. we have long been told and i was just told again that we should start to expect to see some cabinet selections coming from president-elect joe biden. over the course of the next week, on or around thanksgiving. we did see the last time that we were expecting a big personnel announcement from him, that was the vice presidential pick and that date had a tendency to slide. we'll speak generally here. a lot of people saying these announcements could come around thanksgiving. that's the ballpark of timing we're looking at.
11:06 am
as we start thinking about biden who has said he has selected someone he wants to lead the treasury department. speculate starting the mount about who koulcould lead the st department. the key is diversity on the one hand and considering who the senate would confirm on the other. both of those races critical to the senate and allowing biden more room if they were to win one or both of those seats to pick people and have more democrats confirming those people but listen to what one of the transition advisers say in terms ho s of how they are thin through this. >> we will have a team that looks like america that is diver diverse. we saw today that there were a number of republicans who indicated they would be open to supporting nominees. that feels like a positive sign.
11:07 am
we know the american people are not expecting obstruction. they are expecting members of both party, democrats and republicans to come together and help put qualified and experienced people in place to address the various crisis that our country is facing. >> reporter: it's hard to start looking past what the confirmation battle will like in the transition period. this is something that viewers and you and i should expect to talk about the push and pull to get these cabinet picks confirmed once they are named. there's a lot of push and pull on the progressive side of this. certain people jockeying to have different people with different ideologies in different roles and this is where biden's bipartisan credential, all the the abilities he's touted to reach across the islaisle, thos will come home to roost. >> he's trying to put together
11:08 am
something that senate will confirm but he's giving that consideration unlike the revolving door of cabinet secretaries that were acting secretaries that donald trump was legally able to do but it just, as we know. it's hard the keep track of how many have been through the cabinet positions in this administration, acting positions. thank you for that. is it possible for joe biden to have a successful transition without any help from the white house? >> it makes it much more difficult. everything from being able to get classified briefings about what's going on in the world to having a smooth transition as the country and as he prepares the take on a the biggest issue facing the country right now which is the pandemic and that includes the economic fall out from the pandemic as well as
11:09 am
efforts to ensure there's an infrastructure in place once a vaccine is ready to get that distributing to americans as quickly as possible. these are really literally life and death issues that the biden administration is facing. the longer the trump administration puts bearriers i place for that process to start, the more difficult that it will be. >> kimberly, it kind of seems like joe biden knows donald trump is listening when he speaks. he's very careful. you can see him parsing the language that he uses. do you think he will reach the end of his rope any time soon and change that tone? >> i think we're already seeing the tone gradually change. i think in the early weeks after the election and the results were clear, we saw joe biden moving carefully in order to allow president trump to have the 12 stages of grief or whatever he needs to come to the realization of what has happened. now you see in each of these
11:10 am
briefings, you see president-elect biden expressing more frustration and expressing more urgency that by waiting for this transition and preventing this transition from moving forward that people's lives are in danger. he's going naming his team, talking about his plan, having his own meetings with respect to foreign policy, with respect to the coronavirus and other things. he's moving forward to the extent that he can but i think we're already seeing him begin to lose the patience with this president who seems bent on obstructing him. >> yeah. it's unable donald trump may be going through the 12 stages of grief but he's doing it on joe biden's time. that's the problem here. abby, what do you make of the latest effort to delay the certification of the election results in michigan that i was talking to josh about. do you think the president believes something really could come out of this? >> it's hard to tell. this is a president who builds
11:11 am
his open reality. if you look back in his biography, he creates this fa saids and engages in litigation that is meant to wear people down and maybe not is based on the merits of the case. he's delaying is basically the inevitable. there's no republican legal mind who is are engaging in these lawsuits. ben ginsberg cannot scream to heavens loud enough this election is over. the world is moving on. the american government will move on. what makes me nervous about this is trump's base is not moving on. i was on plane last weekend with someone and a woman on this thought she was going to return to washington, d.c. for the trump inauguration. this is getting very uneasy and v very anxious. i'm more worried about that inauguration day and the government. kimberly makes some very good
11:12 am
points there too. >> i'm not surprised by the conversation you had on that plane. i've heard similar things myself. there's a person close to the president who tells nbc news that the president knows he lost but that he wants to make it as difficult for democrats as he believes they made his transition into office. what do you make of that? >> there was mueller investigation and intense lack backs on that campaign but in the actual transition, president barack obama and his staff did many, many things to show the ropes of the white house. president trump, himself, came over and met with president obama. democrats did do things. at times jared kushner and vice president elect did not heed their warnings. there's been books written about that, including pandemics. trump has some vengeance going on here but the reality is obama tried to replicate george w. bush's transition in doing everything he can to support his
11:13 am
successor but the stakes are so much higher this time given the pandemic that every day thousands of people are dying. it's an uncomfortable situation. >> kimberly the last word on that of the president knowing he's lost but trying the make it as difficult as possible in an act of retribution. >> that's the only explanation at this point. he wants joe biden to fail in his administration. if he can aid in that failure, in his view, in making it more difficult to get off the ground and deny the legitimacy of his victory, he's going to do that whether it's to make his own administration look better or whether it is to start as of january 20th a new presidential campaign on his order or whoever he thinks his heir would be in starting that political fight. that's clearly start of what is happening right now. >> ladies, so good to see you both. thank you for joining me.

because i've got to know your reaction. when you hear the u.s. added a million new cases in less than a week. why is this happening now? >> it's so disturbing. we're seeing and exceeding some of the estimates we had. that's without the thanksgiving crush that we know will happen. i think that we're seeing this for a couple of reasons. it is getting colder. people as the country is getting colder, movie ining indoors mor. you heard about the small gatherings as well as people's homes. here is what we're seeing. we're seeing a lot of people who are asymptommatic and positive. they might get a positive test and not get tested at awe and say i don't feel bad. they don't necessarily isolate the way they should. then the people around them are not quarantining as they should. they are kind of going through work or they're going to some of their usual activities. literally, it's called viral spread for a reason.
