this? >> so i have to tell you when i read that i was sick to my stuck. it just brought everything back into per spect sieve. on a shift that really happened this summer. in terms of it was always a focus on reelection and focus opt economy. and it was all of the decisions made and disregarding public health consideration. that was how a lot of the white house response was run. even though we had people in the task force meeting saying herd immunity doesn't work. dr. fauci and birx pushed back. we thought it was tabled. now i understand there was a shift in messaging. and you see the pressure on everything that we have to open up and no matter what cost. it was detrimental -- >> this was more than just a concern about the economy and reelection. this was it seemed to be donald trump and people around him

clinician his license would be taken away. he would be stripped of any privilege to do anything not only sued for medical malpractice and put him in jail. why am i not surprised? we have known it's not just covid. it's the border. forced hysterectomy. history will not look kindly on the president and the administration. and the people that have kind of led this and that's exactly where it deserves to be. the toll of death and destruction is just mind boggling. i commend what she's done in taking action. but i think we're still just scratching the surface. herd immunity, understanding the cdc career staff e mals have been blocked from trying to be public. putting people away like dr. fauci not letting him speak.

not holding -- our standards are so low we don't have regular cdc briefings. president-elect biden talked about how the new incoming director will likely resume daily briefings. it's amazing to me we think that's novel. when we have 3,000 deaths a day. and unfortunately this chaos and destruction hides the fact that federal government still hasn't done anything for places like southern california. where we have icu patients waiting in hall ways. we have need to get testing out to schools and teachers. none of that is being discussed. because it's just not convenient to the message. >> you're right. people wonder why a lot of people particularly black and brown folks. people don't trust the vaccine. quickly, you have good news. the fda saying the vaccine should go ahead and go forward. you have news the pfizer vaccine

has extra doses. maybe you can get more. how do you as a public health personal who cares about public health even convince people to step forward and take this vaccine and take it seriously when the government has essentially want ld us all to get sick? >> yeah. it's not easy. it has to be done with trust and trust is hard to come by. one thing true. you have done it yourself honoring front line workers. men and women to physicians and environmental services staff and people who hand out food. they have an incredible amount of trust. watching -- i watched your show monday and cried when i saw the nurse from long island. we cathedrneed more examples li. sp speak out and talk about her experience. the data and how she wants to stop seeing the disease and death in her own community.

action analysis beneath the president's remarks into the administration. so we can learn from this experience and figure out how to deal with a situation like this. in the future. and much more comprehensive way. >> it's not even just an after action. this to me sound criminal. we're not just talking about donald trump saying things that were stupid. but to down play the seriousness of it. don't let it take over your life. the cure can't be worse than the disease. playing down when he knew it was deadly and airborne. now it appears people around him were doing that because they want to lower people's defense and get people encourage people to get sick. they want people to get sick. they thought it was of the solution. that sound like more than incompetence. it's criminal. >> certainly sounds like the

indifference for human life. there should be accountability. we are focussed on trying to come to an agreement on providing immediate relief to americans. in the context of the negotiations that are ongoing. i think we are closer than we have been in a while. thanks to the great leadership of speaker nancy pelosi. who want to provide direct payments. child care. something about food insecurity. housing and unemployment. in the new congress we'll have over sight responsibility in terms of looking back at what happened to perfect the responses moving forward and hold anyone accountable for behavior that crossed the line. >> i'll send a couple ideas up for you. if you do hearings. which i hope happens. thereto are stories about rich countries hording vaccines. for their use. so poor countries are missing out. that's on the table.

and i wonder what you make of the example that we're getting out of the white house. mixed messages. mike pence will get the vaccine in public. the first lady when asked if she was going to get the vaccine she said that's not something she'll likely share. privately. is there anything like a message that is useful out of the white house at this point regarding the vaccine? >> not at all. that's no surprise. this white house from the beginning that has been characterized by chaos and crisis, confusion and corruption. so it's no surprise this particular moment that we're not getting a responsible clean direct unified message. help is on the way. i'm thankful for the leadership that joe biden and kamala harris will provide. >> very quickly, you live in new york. i'm from new york.

times. russian hackers targeted multiple government agencies and private companies. through corrupted software. that was down loaded by nearly 18,000 public and private users. and it's been going on for up to nine months. today federal investigators warning the hackers have found ways to penetrate the system. that pose a graef risk to the federal government. trump said not one word about the cyber attack on the country. which poses a clear and present danger to the security. his former homeland security adviser is speaking out in a new op-ed. warning. we must act as if the russian government has control of all the net works it penetrated. it's unclear what they intend to do next. the access the russians enjoy could be used for far more than simply spying. he adds it will take years to know for certain which net works they control. and which ones they just occupy.

that's terrifying. joining me now congressman schiff of california. chairman of the house intelligence committee. i read that the article twice. scaring is caring. i was terrified. you have the story come out saying the nuclear weapons agency was also breeched in this attack. and hackers in that case access systems at the national nuclear security administration which maintains our nuclear weapons stockpile. how much trouble are we in? >> we're in deep trouble. this hack and pen traetration w on for months without detention. the bad actors here used good -- that is they may have exfiltrated so much data in the way they wouldn't tip their hand. and probably had the ability to do more. but didn't want to disclose their presence in our systems.

at the various agencies. it will take months maybe years before we know the extent of the damage. when we have seen other similar massive hacks and attacks like this. sometimes we have never been fully able it determine the damage. this is i would agree with the "new york times" a massive intelligence failure and defense failure. cyber security failure. and we'll have to do very serious examination about how this happened. if the public reporting is accurate it was the private sector that discovered this. that's the big question we have to answer. why didn't you catch in? >> absolutely. i'll play a russian president vladimir putin dismissing it. and saying it wasn't them. >> russian hackers have never interfered and the election. they have never helped trump get

trump and suggest it's all part of the same hoax. none of it happened. he can really appeal to trump where he lives. and this maybe why trump remained silent. i can't confirm the attribution. part of the establishing a deterrent. it will need to go beyond that and impose sanctions. i don't have a lot of expectation trump will do that. if the public reports are accurate and russian actors behind this, trump has shown no willingness to confront putin. i wouldn't say he's deliberate ri sat down the cyber guard. we have good people at the agenci agencies trying to do their best. we have had one weakness, that is we have not had a deterrent because trump has been so sycophant toward vladimir putin.

just days before critical economic relief programs are set to expire for millions of americans, congress is working out the details on a new stimulus package estimated at $900 billion fp a major climb down from the $3 trillion house democrats sought. the last minute scramble to come up with something follows a flood of new data. nearly 900,000 people applied for jobless benefits. the highest since september.

the eight million americans have slipped into poverty since this summer. the new plan is expected to include direct stimulus checks of $600 per person. half the amount provided in march as well as extension for unemployment insurance and money for businesses as well as rent and food assistance. what's not expected to be in it is funding for state and local government and liability protection for businesses. congress faces upcoming deadline including a midnight friday deadline to keep the government open, extended unemployment insurance expires the day after christmas and a national eviction moratorium expires on new year oos eve. joining me is co-chair of the poor people's campaign. i know you met with members of the biden team today and presented to them what you and the poor people's campaign and your allies would like to see done. what was said in that meeting and what do you think came out of it? >> we got about 22 people that

met with them. we had impacted people in those 41 people that have died from covid. we had white farmers. we had latinos, fast food workers. we had public health professors and economists. we basically said when you lookt the reality of where we were before covid with 140 million poor people in this country and 700 people dying a day from povrerty and now we have over 8 million have been added and nearly 3,000 people who die from poverty, you can't heal the nation without healing the body. the body is sick with systemic racism, systemic poverty, ecological devastation, denial of health care and misguided spending. what we laid out for them 14 point, i think you may have them. 14 points that we have to do beginning with comprehensive just and full covid relief. not one policy, not just one

negotiation that will get the average person 600 bucks. >> we have people in congress who get free health care, who make nearly a quarter million dollars a year. now they are compromising and negotiating on the backs of low income people. low wealth people are dying. white people and so forts. then they want us to call this a christmas miracle. it's not a christmas miracle. it's a christmas mess and it's meanness. mcconnell has only wanted to give immunity, liability for corporations and not want to do right by all the people. you know, it is -- if i was in the old testament, joy, the praise that would be using is the bands of wickedness. this is out right meanness and wickedness in the middle of time when people are dying. they're so mean, they're hurting

their own constituents. it's not compromise. it's copitulation. it's the least amount they can do. we were already in a whole lot of pain. what we said today in this meeting going forward, liberalism is not going to get us out of this, trickle down economics will not get us out of this. you'll have to focus from the bottom up on poor and low wealth people. the blood of the people that are dying are on the hands of mitch mcconnell and these senators who refuse to do right by the people in this country. it's just mean. it's a mess and it's a form of political wickedness and political violence. >> i want to note that mitch mcconnell is only asssaying he wants to do a bill because he's worried it's hurting to two senate candidates in georgia. among the people who have gotten relief have been megachurches. joel olsteen got money.
