with usher. >> ryan stephenson, man, amazing to be able to be a part of this. you're receiving the global citizen of the year. >> i'm so honored by this award and this recognition. on behalf of everybody at the equal justice initiative who have been fighting this fight for a long time, we are really humbled by this. >> what spurred the creation of the equal justice initiative? >> before i got involved in this work, i didn't really appreciate all the damage that was being done. we had politicians debating crime policy in this country and they were debating as if they could put crimes in jails and prison and they created these very harsh sentences and punishments. the truth is we can't put crimes in jails or prisons. we put people in jails or prisons.

>> is there anything that you feel best effects change? >> you have to get approximate. you cannot stay isolate from where the problems are. i think that all of us have to find ways to get closer to people experiencing inequality and justice. we will never prevail in changing the world if we only do the things that are comfortable and convenient. >> i read an article that said you only stopped fighting for legal assistance when the incarceration system and justice system works fairly for everyone. do you still feel that way and are you optimistic and hopeful for the future? >> i am. it's partly for me kind of an orientation. they sang "we shall overcome"

20% of all maternal deaths in the world today occur in nigeria. following her own childbirth scare temie giwa-tubosun decided to take on a problem that had seemed unsolvable. she created an extraordinary organization called life, using mapping technology to source and deliver essential medical products to african hospitals. the winner of the 2020 global citizen prize for business leader, temie giwa-tubosun. temie, congratulations. how does it feel to be honored for your extraordinary work? >> it feels amazing. i'm just so glad that our work here in africa has been honored in this amazing way. >> i know you were raised in nigeria, but your parents moved to minneapolis when you were a teenager. how do your mom and dad feel about your work? >> in the beginning, my mom didn't quite understand why i

would leave this amazing life they've been able to give me in minneapolis, but now a couple of years back i brought her down to nigeria and i showed her what we did at lifebank. now she's the biggest fan of lifebank and my parents are incredibly supportive every single day of the work we do here. >> the idea to create lifebank i know came from a personal experience. what happened and how did it motivate you? >> about seven years ago i had a baby boy, and i was very lucky to have him in the united states. i had quite a lot of complications. he was born early, but i got access to the best health care, and that was where this passion for maternal health care became more personal, and i felt like i could help build a system that delivers a similar type of care that i got in the u.s. here in nigeria. >> what is your vision for the future of lifebank? >> i have great big giant dreams for lifebank. you see, the problem we're

my name is moses obeniah, amidst this challenging year being an african-american and my father being a doctor, i knew what was at stake. i knew i had to act more so now than ever before, so i had the idea of giving free laundry and dry cleaning to the immediate family members of front line responders. commission in such a crazy time? >> well, i remember a year ago when i started as the president of the european commission, the world was completely different. the corona crisis was unprecedented for all of us, and yes, as a medical doctor i might have had some advantages in understanding the dynamics and the challenges of the pandemic, but having said that, for me there is no doubt this double crisis, it is a double crisis,

the health and the economic crisis of unprecedented scale is definitely the biggest challenge in my life and you can only be prepared to a certain extent to deal with a crisis like this. >> another big agenda for yours has been to encourage the adoption of the so-called european green deal. can you tell us about what that is and why you think it's important? >> well, plain and simply because time is up. climate change is a crisis that threatens the ability of mankind to live on this planet. as gloomy as the picture is, the good news is that it is up to us to bring about change, and we just have to gather our courage and act bold and smart. >> now, obviously we're still in the middle of this pandemic, and maybe it's too early, but what are the biggest lessons you've learned from managing this response in europe? >> well, nikolaj, it's very simple. the lesson i have learned is

unity pays off. we've learned, for example, here in europe that when we join forces we get better at containing the virus. this saves lives, and that's the most important. it's a simple lesson, but it's the most important lesson we've learned. >> finally, this award, the global citizen prize for world leader, what does that mean to you? >> nikolaj, i'm deeply honored, and i'm truly humbled to receive this prize because i know this prize is a prize for all of us, for my great, great team, which has been in this with me from day one, and you have my word that team europe stays on the ball because as much as the global citizen award is a moment to celebrate, and we'll do that, we cannot stop with our work until we have overcome this pandemic and its impact. so thank you very much for the prize. it's a tremendous motivation to

how -- are you surprised? >> surprised. nick, the work we do keeping water running for hundreds of thousands, we're going to scale to millions because we're tackling a challenge that affects 400 million people across africa and over 2 billion worldwide, and we're growing right now, and in ten years we'll be servicing 30 million and more. we're going to create over 13,000 jobs. so when we give water, we also create jobs. this is huge, i still cannot believe.

and '90s when the hiv/aids crisis took hold. family and friends, co-workers and neighbors shunned, discarded, ignored, forgotten and left to suffer, many alone in walled off corners of hospitals. the stigma was so deep and treacherous and wrong that the ignorant called the virus the gay cancer and delayed testing and treatment for years. but in 1992, he decided to use his standing as an artist to save lives and launched the elton john aids foundation. it has raised more than $450 million supporting programs around the world that improve testing, treatment, and ending the stigma. may we never forget that his work, his art is why countless can still do theirs and bring more light and love to this world. here to present the prize for artist of the year to sir elton john is miley cyrus.

>> elton, thank you so much for allowing me to be here and talk about the elton john aids foundation. >> you're so welcome, and thank you for all that you've done for the foundation. >> many people don't really understand what the atmosphere was like that led to the aids foundation, so can you kind of walk us through it? >> it was awful. during the 1980s it was a gay plague and took a young boy to bring people's attention to it. and ryan was an enormous tipping point for the disease. then things began to change. during the '80s, i did a couple of benefits. i made a record with stevie wonder, knight, i didn't do enough as a gay man to -- i should have been there, i should have marched, i should have been much more political than i was. so many of my friends died. so many of my friends still had hiv and aids. when i got sober in 1990 i realized i wanted to make a difference not just for gay people but for everybody. i decided from my kitchen table in atlanta to set up the organization. but, you know, as the disease

developed, we changed from being a direct care foundation, mother to child transmission, orphan care, to targeting marginalized groups all over the world. now we got a covid emergency fund to cope with both pandemics at once. our motto is "nobody gets left behind." >> you've won a lot of awards over the years, not just with your foundation but so many accolades with your talents, but why is being given the global citizen artist of the year prize mean so much to you? what makes it special and different? >> it's so amazing. i'm extremely grateful for this accolade. i'm so grateful that people know about the elton john aids foundation and consider it a wonderful organization to contribute to and to work with. but for me, it reminds me of all the work yet to do. we've got our foot on the accelerator. we cannot take it off. if the message is by getting this award, thank you very much, from a 73-year-old man who still wants to work tirelessly for
