handled by professionals in the to protect the homeland on the eve of his second impeachment is where we start this hour with some of our favorite reporters office that sherwood runs but it and friends. reminds me a lot of 9/11. ashley parker, byline is on that the mass story, which was stunning piece of reporting in the "washington post," also terrific, is about much like joining us, jason johnson, professor at morgan state after this september 11 attacks, university, contributor to the we learned of these clues that had been out there and yet not grio, and axios political fully processed or not fully absorbed or not fully acted upon reporter. ashley, jason, and alexi, lucky and in addition to see in the for us, all msnbc contributors. days of come, more of this kind start with you and your of thing. reporting. i would read the whole thing out it's a failure of imagination as loud but i might get so mad i would break my table. well as anything else. a lot of loose talk, you can see take me through the portrait that you reported on in today's on the internet, people say radical crazy wild incendiary "washington post." >> sure. so, we decided to focus in on a things and most is just talk and pivotal six hours during the when do you move from talk to action but the failure to attack wednesday, basically from just before 2:00 p.m. when the imagine that the words or in that memo from the fbi could capitol was first breached to just around 8:00 p.m. when the capitol was finally secured and lead to what happened, you know, focus in on how the president has to shock the system at this was spending his time. point. >> i remember that memo. i might get the name wrong but and one thing that we learned is
1:07 pm
it was a female agent in the fbi that you had all of these people field office who had sent a memo frantically trying to get through to the president, trying to get through to the white with some details, i believe, house, lindsey graham calling about one of the hijackers ivanka's cell phone, kevin mccarthy getting trump and attending flight school. finding him distracted and it was central to what ended up happening and it is the calling jared kushner, his son-in-law, and begging jared, appropriate historical parallel to what you've reported, matt. who had just returned from a trip to the middle east, to get over to the white house and try let me read some of your to help. reporting. you have kelleyanne conway, quote, a situational information who's very close with the president, but no longer in report approved for release the government, getting a call from day before the u.s. capitol riot painted a dire portrait of dangerous plans including the d.c. mayor's office because individuals sharing a map of the they need help in getting the complex's tunnels and possible rally points for would-be administration to call up the national guard and calling a conspirators to meet up in kentucky, pennsylvania, close personal aide of the massachusetts, and south president to relay that message, carolina and head in groups to and donald trump is, as we wrote, he was watching this all washington. as of january 5th, 2021, fbi on live television and he was norfolk received information paralyzed but i think it is indicating calls for violence in important to note that he was response to unlawful lockdowns willfully paralyzed. he was fully aware of the to begin on january 6th, 2021, situation, and in some ways, we were told, especially initially, in washington, dc. he was watching it somewhat the document says. gleefully. an online thread discussed he liked what he was seeing. he was sort of in awe and specific calls for violence to include stating be ready to fight. proudly so of the fact that his congress needs to hear glass

1:09 pm
certainly, i think they're under an attention disorder, that he was riveted by the live a lot of fire for at least not pictures. if it was tivo, he would stop it girding the capitol a little better. and take calls but because it they told the joint terrorism was live, yoo hoo, live tv can task force and maybe it was incumbent on others like the be paused too if the capitol's burning as it literally was and capitol police but the fbi has tough questions to answer the vice president's life has been engaged by you. because what is described in he seems incapacitated and i that memo, the fbi's own memo is wonder if you could just flesh out this description of paralysis and inability to hit eerily similar to what actually pause on the tv. transpir what did the people say who transpired. handed him the phone? >> dawn edwards, this is a hard obviously, people were handing him the calls from kelleyanne and lindsey. thing to put out there but the reality is the members of congress are being briefed on was he, like, was he drooling? acts of violence that law was he not able to hit pause? was he just cheering? what was his state? enforcement is now preparing for in the future and this is how >> well, another striking thing connor lamb reacted on cnn in s is how much the president and a number of people around him really had to be prodded into briefing to what the insurrectionists and what the doing the right thing but what trump supporters have planned should have been a no brainer, still. >> the threats we are facing are which is trying to quell the violence that left five dead on very specific. the government that he actually i don't want anyone watching at home to think we're sort of leads by a mob that he actually imagining things could be bad. they're talking about 4,000 encouraged, right cef of staff, armed patriots to surround the
1:10 pm
capitol and prevent any democrat from going in and they have meadows, had to be sort of published rules of engagement, bucked up by his team to go into meaning when you shoot and when the oval office and before he went in, a staffer said, look, you don't. so this is an organized group lives could be lost. that has a plan. you had a moment where you, >> so dawn, when he said when again, you have kayleigh you shoot, i was reminded back mcenany, white house press to peter's point of 9/11. secretary, mark meadows, ivanka trump in the oval office trying it wasn't a question of if we to tell the president that this is urgent, that people could would get attacked but where and when. die, that we are literally connor lam is talking as though the threat assessment is so hearing from members of congress who are huddling under their dire, they're just trying to desks as nancy pelosi described, understand when and where they will be assaulted when they go staffers who have barricaded the about their job on capitol hill. doors, turned off the lights and >> i know, this is really are sort of, you know, shivering shocking, nicole, and i think in terrified silence, and you, mr. president, need to do something. that for members of congress to and those tweets that they put be told now that they can use out that were insufficient, i was told, while this was as much their representational as the president was willing to allowances for their offices to do in this moment, and one more striking thing to me that we reported was you had republican purchase bulletproof vests so that they can be protected, i lawmakers, republican house members, calling top people in the white house and begging and actually have not understand why saying, look, i'm a loyal supporter of this president. it is that members of congress, i'm still going to vote for his
1:11 pm
up until this point, have not baseless claims to try to overturn the results of the been protected in the way that election, but i fear for my life. just please have him do they deserve and that we all something. so it's not just, like, deserve. we could see that happening at democratic leaders were calling. these were loyal members of maga the capitol and those of us who track some of the stuff online nation, the vice president was could see the increase in the whisked away to a secure location with supporters of the discussions, the message president chanting to hang him, hang mike pence, and even with all that, donald trump did not threads, the quotes online that bother and no one from the white led up to this and so, why is it house actually bothered to reach out to the vice president to see that the fbi and other law if his team or he was okay. enforcement could not imagine at one point, the vice it? i think this is a huge question, president's chief of staff but we need to get to the called after radio silence from the white house to kind of say, security of the capitol and of hey, guys, don't worry about us, individual members of congress we're still alive, everything's fine. who themselves are threatened by but that is how things played out during those terrifying and these insurrectionists and i get incredibly disconcerting six the sense from that briefing hours. >> jason johnson, the floor is yesterday that members know that this is not the end of it. >> olivia, to that point, just yours. >> first, this is amazing reporting, and i read this and i anecdotally, on live tv, jim was infuriated and disgusted and not surprised.
1:12 pm
one, it highlights how ridiculous trump's plan was from the beginning. heinz said they weren't in the this idea that he actually thought that this armed capitol and then she told her insurrection was going to stop husband where her will was on the count, which is sort of the tuesday night. political violence equivalent congresswoman barbara lee wore of, if i pull this fire alarm, then my teacher won't grade my sneakers in case she had to run to the office on wednesday. paper. you know, at some point, she's they knew exactly what was going going to come back and grade your paper. to happen and now we know the like it was a ridiculous idea fbi knew exactly what was going from the very beginning. but i think what was even more to happen. what is your sense of how telling is this reminded me, quickly all of these, i mean, it nicole, of what i have never believed all along during this took weeks and months to make administration, which is the idea that there were adults in the room, that there were people in this administration that some of the policy changes after 9/11. could hold donald trump in we have a larger higher check. every single person they thought they could call to bring this intensity event in joe biden's together couldn't do it. they probably would have been more effective calling sean inauguration next wednesday. hannity or steve bannon or alex >> well, i think, first of all, jones because those are the only i think what happened at the people that donald trump capitol, honestly, could have believes. the only people that he'll been prevented. listen to. i mean, this was a lack of so, i mean, is it compelling? implementation, of executing yes. is it terrifying? intelligence that was readily yes. is it a reminder of how available that they had. so to me, it's not really an dangerous and incompetent this person is? yes. intelligence failure that it's also a reminder of the fact happened. that anything that we can do to it's more the, it was a failure get him and everybody around him
1:13 pm
to act upon the intelligence and out of office as soon as to me, that says a lot about possible is absolutely necessary because there are no guardrails what happens with the trump and there are no adults in the administration and certainly people who are complicit in room. >> and i mean, that's such a allowing this to happen. good point, and there probably moving forward, i think i'm never really were. worried. we have a president who sat that the ones that were there have been fired by tweet. day and a complete dereliction the people that seem to run the of duty. he did not deploy the national complex to the degree that anyone runs it seem to be the guard. we saw an incident where he sat family members, jared, you know, and people in the pentagon sat on the request. so i have significant concerns and i hope that the good people pardoning his dad, among others, and ivanka tweeting, my best life photos. in her eyes, it would appear that still exist at these from her instagram account. agencies at whatever level they're at are going to do the what is the picture, alexi, on right thing and any kind of preparation they can for this capitol hill on a day when mitch inauguration and across the mcconnell says purging trump country to make sure that we from the republican party would keep our lawmakers safe that be a good thing, that he is coming down on the day. >> peter baker, olivia's on to pro-impeachment side. you've got chris christie, who something, i think, really crucial to understand. was donald trump's debate coach i spoke to someone on the through the first disastrous incoming biden white house staff debate until he ended up today who said, this is our problem in one week and we know hospitalized with covid saying that if insurrection isn't it and it will all be on us but as olivia just said, for the impeachable, i do not know what next week, we're depending on is. where do you think -- it's not the third, fourth, fifth, sixth going to be a flood gate because
1:14 pm
in command. there are not enough -- you just the people who didn't walk out can't wash the big lies off yourself fast enough for a after yesterday's to the floodgate to open but what do insurrection to protect the you think the trickle will look incoming president, three former like of republicans moving toward impeachment as a solution presidents, from what is an for purging trump from the ongoing threat. party? the briefing connor lam had was about threats that continue >> well, we've heard that there today, that's about what the are concerns that there could be insurrectionists plan to do in anywhere between 10 and 20 house the future and donald trump republicans who end you have today, i promise we're not going defecting and voting for to broadcast this here, but understand what he did, he went impeachment. that's a large number considering the way that the to a microphone, went to cameras party has coalesced around and he did not apologize. president trump over these last he did not call for calm. four years but earlier today, i he did not condemn or call was speaking on the phone with congressman connor lamb, who was criminal the contact of last talking about this capitol police investigation and wednesday. does the president want more everything going on and i sort of asked him, did you think that you would find yourself in a violence? >> well, whether he does or position to impeach president doesn't, he's raising that trump twice in the time since question, right? you have been here? he doesn't look like somebody and he said, no, of course not. and while he knows that it's a who is taking strong action to painful thing for the country this time around, he knows that it's the right thing to do and last wednesday. in the aftermath, return to he also said that he -- what's our 9/11 analogy of the pentagon the big difference to him between this time and last time and world trade center being is the number of republicans who hit, meeting after meeting after have come around publicly and meeting in that white house with privately to supporting the idea
1:15 pm
top law enforcement intelligence hat this was an impeachable military security officials, very intent on making sure there it is something that he needs to be held accountable for. was not a repeat of what had the other things i'll mention to just happened and you don't tie all this together, when we sense that urgency from the think about ashley's reporting white house right now. and all the points that jason you don't hear a president just made, i think the big saying, you know, we are taking picture is that president trump all new measures to make sure has been unreachable for a number of weeks. that this city, this capitol, i think back to reporting that swan had for axios on december this democracy are safe. 19th in which senior trump hear us talk about how impeachment is somehow divisive administration officials were and the 25th amendment will come alarmed by the fact that they said trump was surrounding himself with people they back to bite joe biden and his considered to be crack pot talk at the rally last week was conspiracy theorists, nicole. i want to read one quote to you. completely appropriate. >> please. and so you're right. it's left to the people >> from december 19th, because it's really chilling to think underneath him to sort of take about it in this moment. charge and fill that vacuum. a senior administration official a lot of them are very told swan that when trump is, quote, retweeting threats of experienced and responsible putting politicians in jail and actors but there is a reason why spends his time talking to we want presidential leadership in moments of national crisis. conspiracy nuts who openly say declaring martial law is no big >> you know, donna, it's not clear to me that the president deal, it's impossible not to is functioning as the commander start getting anxious about how this ends. in chief. both matt and peter's papers and now we're seeing exactly how this is ending. reported the president was not in the chain of command when the >> i think i read that on the national guard was called in to

1:17 pm
chain of. titan, horrifying encapsulation of that but we had written this is not a democracy when you stories and others had reported remove the commander in chief. how he basically abdicated his responsibilities, for instance, for handling the coronavirus that is not a functioning crisis, which, while we're all democracy and i think all the focused on other things, hasn't more reason that the congress gone away. more americans are dying and needs to act even if there's one getting sick and being hospitalized every single day. hour left in this presidency to there's not one person who has remove him from office. stepped up to take over, but you >> olivia, your group is putting know, there are people here and money where all of our mouths there that are doing what you are, pledging $50 million to traditionally expect of a president, and perhaps more defend republicans who support disconcertingly, there's people who are not doing that, right? impeaching trump. we are preparing for one of i was struck by jim jordan today these times that in the best of refusing to say he accepts the occasions, national security folks tell us, is a very fraught results of the election. he's about to have a medal of and dangerous period and creates a potential power vacuum. freedom hung around his neck the reason we have such a robust that might explain it but surely the infection that had made the transition is because of what whole country sick and leaves happened on 9/11 and how those people like connor lam and all attacks were able to sort of of donna's former colleagues and fall through the cracks as we moved from one administration to another. anyone in the media covering this story in danger, the so this is an already dangerous infection is the lie. time and the idea that any of and the refusal to push back these things are not being against the lie.
1:18 pm
so talk about who the money goes handled is just incredibly to. what your standards are and how problematic. and they are not being handled. >> jason, i mean, the picture -- you define pushing back. i keep asking that question >> we've been working on this for the past week. because the picture that we've been talking about how do emerged -- is emerging cries out we support the few republicans for some sort of leadership, and and i say few because it's been in the vacuum, we're learning very, a small number, few and from members of congress that at far between who are going to stand strong for the country, least a couple, maybe more like show moral courage and do the a few members of the capitol police force have been suspended right thing. and so we've started this and even more are under project to let them know we will have your back. it will be easy. investigation. we know it's hard. there's some reporting in the "times" and other places of some the trump machine is out there, contacts between members of it's powerful. congress and the rioters. trumpism isn't going away right they could all be seen at a rally with donald trump and his after january 20th. it's something we'll have to son and his son's girlfriends or contend with into what the wives or whatever they are, project is going to say we're speaking to them, riling them going to be here for you. all up. >> we're going to watch that we played the language they used with you. yesterday. i'm not going to replay it i think this idea of having today. but in your eyes, it seems so money and donations dry up for abundantly -- in my eyes, it people on the wrong side of the lie, people supporting the lie seems abundantly clear that this was a trump-directed, and having money flow to people
