but intended to forcibly reinstall donald trump as the president. and how they planned to do that is frightening. one said quote we're going to defend the president. you can call it insurrection or war, or fight. their goal was for trump to declare insurrection and use the insurrection act and then quote call us up as the militia. given the go ahead, intended to arrest members of the congress. oathkeepers prepared to execute a literal coup by former and current members of the military on trump's orders. not only ones. michael flynn appeared to say a coup in this country is not only possible but actually should happen. flynn instead as much during a four-day conference in texas for believers in the qanon conspiracy theory. latest sign it's gone mainstream

inside the republican base. according to poll last week, 23% of republicans say they believe in the premise of the qanon conspiracy theory, that the government is controlled by group of satan worshipping pedophiles who run a global child sex trafficking prachlgts operation. i know, it's bananarama bonkers. but one in four republicans believe it. videos appear to be designed to inspire if not incite violence against political leaders in washington, including president biden. some of the imagery is so violent and suggestive, i can't show it to you. another portion of the videos also appeared to predict that the united states government would be overthrown this year and trump would seize power. against that backdrop a person

january 6th and sigh the desire has not gone away. former now convicted felon michael flynn, former national security adviser is saying we should have a military coup, we should. when we see the indictment that dropped on the oathkeepers this weekend and planning of what happened. and what was it that actually kept the president from invoking the insurrection act? it was the fact, read the indictment, that no counter protesters, blm, antifa, showed up and actually got into it with the insurrectionists. if they had, this would be the trigger in their minds that would have created all-out conflict that would have allowed the president to invoke the insurrection act. >> to stay with that for a moment, right. you had immediately some republicans even who tried to say it was antifa and black

lives matter and shift it on to them. leads one to think anyone knowledgeable about the plot or thought could happen, crossing fingers for conflict, really believed and hoped that black lives matter and antifa people, antifascists, would show up. then the white nationalist groups and i don't know what they call themselves, proud boys and all the different groups with military members in them, could and did military maneuvers, hoped to have fight, insurrection act called, martial law. fact that's a real thing, is that what chris wray was warning about? is that what we have to fear in 2024? >> yeah, not only not gone away with trump leaving office, it has gotten worse and emboldened trump and those around him who is talking about coming back into power magically in august. they think can happen, we better

leader said he got tour of the white house. didn't say he met with trump. guy who started this, organized the events who is now in hiding, saying that he got help from members of the congress to organize these events. andy biggs, mo brooks, paul gosar, who keep repeating claptrap, white nationalist, black people shouldn't vote. your party is taken over by this. you once telling me the republicans felt with the tea party they had tiger by the tail and felt could ride it to power but didn't know what they were dealing with. this is worse than that, michael. >> it is worse. and you can't emphasize enough what frank has just laid out. it's not just the stupidity, because we get lost in the stupid and people dismiss it. but this is dangerous. it's important to note that folks like michael flynn are

manipulative at the same time as dangerous. all part of the narrative. premise of the entire operation starts in 2015 when you had folks buying this idea of deconstructing the administrative state. they've now found the tools to do that. wasn't just what trump was doing administratively inside the government but what had to take place outside the government. mike flynn is saying the quiet part out loud. people who have amassed massive weaponry and ammunition going back to 2009, 2010, in the obama era. seeds have been planted, narrative is being reeled out to us. question we have to make real for ourselves, this is no longer about what republicans are doing. we know anything that happened post january 6th is on the hands of the individuals not only

named, the folks you listed. proud boys, whomever, but members who perpetuated this. that's why the january 6th commission is so dangerous to them, it exposes what they have their fingers in, or what they've turned a blind eye towards. i think now it's incumbent on us as citizens, joy, to really ratchet up our concern here, to frank's warning, and to be clear about the dangerousness of what is unfolding in front of us. not just focus on the stupidity of it. yeah, child -- this that or other, cabals here and there, it's underground thing becoming commonplace. >> and when i had a day side show and reporting i did on isis, i watched it to see what i was reporting. these videos they show looked a lot like isis videos, even with

just a couple of hours ago joe biden became first sitting president to commemorate the 1921 tulsa massacre. one of the worst incidents of racial violence in our history. in his remarks, slammed the republicans attack on voting rights. john lewis on his death bed. >> what john said, called the right to vote precious, almost sacred, said the most powerful, nonviolent tool we have in democratic society. it's under assault with intensity i've never seen. house of representatives passed the for the people act to protect our democracy.

first want to thank you and your colleagues for showing us the meaning of fight. there are some democrats, no disrespect, but might have needed that demonstration. that's just me talking here. ask you about a provision. travis collardi bill negotiation claimed that gutting souls to the polls is just an error and he looks forward to fixing it. your thoughts? >> first of all, thank you for having me, honor to be with you. all 67 members of our caucus led on this and made it possible to defeat this bill. all credit to our caucus in texas. provision on the bill, i spoke at length about that. it is a direct attack on souls to the polls. many churches in texas and across the country have

time-honored tradition of getting out the vote after sunday worship. changing the start time from morning to 1:00 p.m. is attempt to cut off access off church and create a line when they do finally open at 1:00 p.m., both have suppressive effect on right to vote. and i talked about this extensively as did other members. not once did a republican say oh, it was a typo. that's a little bit of revisionist history i'm afraid. >> did the same squeal and retreat in georgia when they tried the same thing there. the most terrifying aspect of this bill and all of it is bad, is the idea a judge could simply say i overturn this election, don't have to prove fraud. this is straight-up tyranny. i don't know if you're a lawyer but how can that be legal? >> i'm not a lawyer but i agree with the analysis. it's terrifying to think a judge

could overturn the election without any evidence essentially. it's important to note this provision had never been seen until the final version of the bill was filed some time on saturday. neither the house nor the senate had to consider this at any point in the legislative session. it came out of nowhere. just one of the many outrageous aspects of senate bill 7, which is why had it to be defeated. >> governor abbott who would benefit from the provision, stay in power as long as he wanted. judge could say he won even if o'rourke beats him. he's going to have special session and threatening to fine y'all for walking out, the house democrats. my understanding is you make like $600 a month, so it's not like -- what do you make of his threats? >> that is our salary, a per

diem too in session. it's capable branch of government to the governor, idea he can zero out the legislature is absurd. i don't know what he's talking about. he should be calling special session to address skyrocketing rate of uninsured in state of texas and address the winter storm grid failure we suffered a few months ago. those things the governor should be focused on, not passing voter suppression bills and worried about legislative appropriations. >> challenge is he doesn't have to do that. problem with the authoritarian style governments is you don't have to take care of the people, give them heat in a winter storm because they can't vote you out. they're in there and stay forever. that's what texas is starting to look like.

attacks on the press, kicking out reporters so they couldn't observe. straight-up authoritarianism, what republicans in washington want to replicate. is there any push back from businesses, same reactions as when georgia tried this? >> i hope so and that's the right question to ask. in texas we saw american airlines and dell computer and others come out with strong statements in opposition to the voter suppression measures but we need to see more do that and keep up sustained campaign against further efforts to pass antivoter legislation like this. republicans will bring it back, it's wrong and we need to defeat it. >> and would the bill in congress help you guys? >> absolutely and need john lewis voting rights act, strong

pattern developing. i was there watching the bitterness grow at home about the vietnam war. dots on the screen. last several months, president who said the previous president was illegal immigrant, absurd, awful, racist comments. now a former president, thankfully, calls this president illegal. says he's not president. 2/3 of the party of lincoln saying that joe biden is not president! it's gotten worse and worse and they go from relying on the electoral college because they can't get popular vote. lost in '16 by almost 4 million and lost again in '20. think it's cute to win by the electoral college but now they can't even win with that. trump doesn't believe it.

joe manchin saying we don't care, won't change. >> usually local politicians think it's all local. hear that school bus is going to run across the dangerous bridge, they get calls from the parents. i think that's where you get people. it's not ideology, are you going to fix the damned bridge or not? if anything happens, it's your fault. old politics does work sometimes. kevin mccarthy embarrasses me, because i think having become leader he's capable of leading conceptually, but great thing about reagan which is odd for me, and tip o'neill, when they led, they led. said we'll fix social security for good, their people followed. is kevin mccarthy a leader or follower? why don't they get leaders?

republicans. >> joe manchin, what is something you could say to manchin who loves the filibuster more than democracy apparently? >> you're being optimistic here. do you think he and sinema are only two aren't against getting rid -- >> no, of course not. >> this time lately? >> they are standing in front of at least nine of them, letting kyrsten sinema and joe manchin take all the bullets, that's clear. just covering for other people. but -- >> here's the question, ask this. voting rights coming up. has to be passed by legislation, under the current law, filibuster could kill it. you know you have to do police reform, guns, what else? infrastructure. might be able to get infrastructure without getting rid of the filibuster, but everything biden is talking about needs 60 votes right now.

are you willing to go to the polls next november with nothing? that is also mitch mcconnell's goal. he wants the democrats to get nothing done so he can go to the regular middle of the road deciding voter next november and say the following -- crime's up, inflation is up, the border is not under control. old republican trick of three issues about your opponent, all negative, nothing else to talk about. they'll get that if there's no program, no agenda, nothing passed. what is biden going to say? we're not so bad on inflation, crime and border? it's all playing defense. you can't win. got to pass stuff. covid relief was very smart. if they get real -- you know what, i don't like the word infrastructure but construction.

voting laws in texas. we've seen them in georgia and florida as well. are you concerned even if in theory you're able to get more votes than ron desantis, the way that florida has now structured its laws, they would just overturn and not allow any democrat let alone you to win? can you get democrats past all the hurdles? >> i do because what i have seen on the ground throughout the entire state is the people of our state is are going to rise up against this. they know the system is corrupt. they know the system is designed to break their will. and if we don't break the system, then we're going to continue having republicans dominate our state. so we need the people of our state to understand we've got you. we're going to back you up. but we need them to understand the system that's operating in the state whether it's -- is designed to keep them down. so the system is rigged. the system is corrupt, and i'm asking the people of our state to stand with me, to vote with me so that we end this corruption of 24 years of
