5:10 am
>> that's a great question, especially for july 4. trump, based on talking were with people who were close to the president, he feels that these charges against the trump organization, as long as he isn't personally charge it is a benefit because it keeps his name in the news. they keep going after people that are close to him but at the end of the day he is not charged. some of the things he was saying yesterday, i had to reread them again to make sure i didn't imagine it. he claims they are going after people who are avoiding taxes like on cars or children's tenement tuition. he talks about that avoiding taxes is the american way. and all the allegations that are yet unproven.

americans. as people consider the totality of his achievements, his legacy has been affected in terms of his rankings among these historians. really, really interesting to think about the most recent president in light of that and then how he will be remembered. i think it's something that all presidents, whether they admit it or not, are thinking about as -- maybe not as they are governing, but on the way out, how history will remember them. i'm sure that even applies to the last president as well. >> if you look at that list of presidents, it's not very clearly partisan. when you go back to some of the older presidents, the parties were very different. steve there are republicans who have presidential aspirations. we were talking about it in the last block.

they sort of want to follow in the mold of donald trump. it's not just a good mold. >> no, of course not. here we have a president twice impeached. he tried to overturn our democracy. he was the first president in american history to ever try and overturn an election that he lost. this is a terrible model to follow. in fact, i think erin is right in terms of the historical context. over time, we reassess, we re-evaluate the presidents once we have the benefit of hindsight. in the most recent rankings, we see andrew jackson and woodrow wilson dropping. in the not too distance future, i think he will be lower when we reassess and re-evaluate and consider how tragic his failed term was. >> erin, i want to talk about philly and this new project you are on. it played a remarkable role prior to the period -- or during the civil war. it was a center for the underground railroad.

it had quakers who believed in abolition. a lot of racist institutions there, too. some of the most racist things that happened in american history were written and conjured up in philly. >> listen, thank you so much for mentioning a more perfect union, the project that we are launching at the enquirer. this is my adopted hometown. being here in philly, i think a lot about what kind of the ongoing revolution is which we saw in these protests for, frankly, who these -- our founding deals were going to apply to in this country, in our democracy. yes, philly, we celebrate -- probably more than any other city in this country as the place where democracy was born.

but we also have to acknowledge that many of our first institutions, the first hospital, the first university, the first -- our financial system, the u.s. mint, stock exchange, these institutions were born here. if we acknowledge that freedom was born here, we have to acknowledge inequality was born here. yet, we can be hopeful that we are in the spirit of our framers and our founders. we can chart a new way forward so that those ideal dozen apply to everybody in a way that they still have yet to do. that's what we mean by having a more perfect union as it says in our declaration. >> thank you for that. thank you for your writing on a daily basis, steve. if you don't follow steve, you should. his book is out in paperback. it's called "the imposters." erin, editor for "the 19th," which you should subscribe to and follow her on twitter. she's contributing editor to a more perfect union launched

today. don't go anywhere. we have more on the way. the january 6th select committee is about to start digging into how the capitol insurrection happened. i'm going to be joined by two members of the committee, the chair congressman thompson and pete aguilar. i will ask them whether they are going to use their subpoena power on the 45th president of the united states. the next hour begins right now. good morning. happy 4th of july. as many of us prepare for cookouts and safe gatherings, let's look at where we were one year ago today. covid-19 was raging out of control. hundreds of people were dying every day. the president, who had quaintly only been impeached once by then, didn't care about that. instead, held a party in the midst of a pandemic. while at mount rushmore in south dakota, the president did
