8:01 am
insurrection and now all eyes are on her next move including will she add to the committee, will it be another republican. >> we will proceed in this. as i said they're in the process of the committees and they're in the process of hiring staff to that end. it is my responsibility to get to the truth of this and we will not stand in the way of this. house leaders call on their supporters to get the vaccine. but is that enough on the ground at the local level. in arkansas cases are up and the vaccination rate is abysmal.
8:02 am
ahead i will talk with chris jones, a democratic running for governor there that could face off against sarah huckabee sanders. let's start with new developments. the battle over investigating january 6th. leann caldwell is on capitol hill so look. speaker pelosi knows what she has done in taking these members off of the committee. she thought she had to do it anyway. what are the other big headlines from the press conference? >> speaker pelosi wanted to make clear that it is not because of representative banks and jordan's votes as the reason they were removed from this committee. it's important to note that another member that mccarthy
8:03 am

8:04 am
if she will appoint anyone else to the committee. she has five open slots now. i'm told there are discussions about appointing representative amend kinsinger. he has been very vocal and what happened on that day. and i'm told that speaker pelosi is going to meet with him in the next hour or so. so we'll see how that develops. but you know speaker pelosi rejected the premise that this will look like a partisan circus because of the republicans that mccarthy said was not going to be on it. she insists that the members of the committee will be chosen reason, right? >> kinsinger is not necessarily besties with mccarthy. i think this was from political. gop leaders wanted to scare him
8:05 am

8:06 am
>> it is very strong on that workout. where we're left right now. it is a republican on the select committee, and she minced no words. let's listen. >> at every opportunity the minority leader prevents the american people from understanding what happens to block this investigation. i think that any person third in line must demonstrate the rule of law. >> what do you make of that and how important does she remain now to the committee? >> yeah, representative cheney's

8:09 am
constellation or galaxy. i think you can see president biden is allowing speaker pelosi to take the lead on this. but the president has expressed over and over begin his desire for it to be bipartisan. back in the days we were talking about a commission, and that was since derailed. the president said he really wanted to see it happen and when that was not the option and now we have the select committee again and the president stressed that he thinks this should be done by democrats and republicans. now republicans are using a little bit of the biden administration on january 6th as a talking point when there wasn't one. that was under the prior administration. the white house is making clear that the distinction, the
8:10 am
delineation, and where he believes an investigation is essential to get to the truth on what happened. it is a very dark day that he spoke to repeatedly. >> i want to bring in lisa who is a politics correspondent. good of you to join us as well. when we look at this dichotomy, how important is the january 6th position and the way it is run by a gauge of who we are and what we stand for. >> it is deeply important, and i think the fact is that she is really going to face a uphill battle to get a lot of the american public or a portion that are republican to see this as a nonpartisan inquiry. it is deeply divided politically. they share a common set of facts and you can say i have been
8:11 am
spending a lot of time talking to republican voters and listening to focus groups and republican voters are where mccarthy is. they have been questioning what happened since september 6th. they question the violence and how bad it was. they see it as the work of a couple bad actors. so i think they're going to, a lot of those voter wills look at this effort by speaker pelosi. it is technically bipartisan. they join her on the committee but i'm not sure that many republican voters may perceive it that way nap is really a struggle for the country as we move forward and we're trying to firth out what happened on january 6th. who was responsible. we know some extremist groups were involved. it was really important that the country established a couple set
8:12 am
of facts. >> and they are seeing what is before their eyes. but i want to make sure we have time to talk about infrastructure because republicans blocked that test vote in the senate on wednesday night. >> i am told they are finalizing details with the white house waiting on this final budget analysis of how the legislation would they are giving democrats some time to get their ducks in order on a 3.5 trillion partisan climate infrastructure package they want to pass.
8:13 am
so things will continue slowly for the next couple days and early next week we could really see if it has any legs. senator schumer is indicating that he will do the vote again. the bipartisan negotiators are indicating they would vote for the process to start early next week. i think they have most of the things under wraps. so we still have a couple days to go where things could really fall apart or they could really jell and come together. >> modern history tells us that what is phenomenally popular doesn't always translate to what happens on the hill and in congress. having said that when you have something that is so phenomenally popular with the american people that answers a lot of the complaints that if you can't get infrastructure,
8:14 am
what else are you going to get done. i don't think if they are unable to get a deal on this, i don't think it will boost anyone's opinion of covet or congress, but that opinion is not particularly high right now. but i think it could pose a big problem for the biden administration. let's not forget that president biden made a lot of promises being able to work across the aisle, ushering in some bipartisan cooperation. there is a few discreet areas. this is really the administration's best shot to get bipartisan cooperation, infrastructure is something both parties talked about for a very long time. it is something that affects every american and that has you point out is really popular. everyone loves a road that doesn't have potholes. so if the administration can't find a way for congress to get
8:15 am
some bipartisan deal, on some pieces of legislation, it's hard to see if they accomplish that goal in other areas. that could end up being a problem for them. >> thank you all so much. rising covid cases and rising tensions. what happens when kids go back to school this fall? what is one school district doing to keep students safe. >> plus, gun violence is up and attorney general garland is out with a new plan for the problem. gun traffickers. those details are coming up, too. details are coming up, too. ♪ when technology is easier to use... ♪ barriers don't stand a chance. ♪ that's why we'll stop at nothing to deliver our technology as-a-service.
