see you back here monday night. >> if you score the meek mill interview, we are going to fight. we are going to fight for that interview. it has to be your lawyer. i would love to get that interview. can we do it together? >> you know what, we had our other artist on together. i would love to do a joint interview of meek mill with you you. >> officially we have pitched that just now on national tv. let's do it. >> to the world. >> have a great weekend. thank you. all right. cheers. all right. good evening. we begin the reid out with a hearer story. today issed from the 13th. most of us old enough to remember, that conjures up members of jason vorhees and his murdering rampages near crystal lake.
4:01 pm
so spooky. 2021 the nightmare has been replaced by another horrifying reality, the modern republican party. for many hardcore trump followers and the orange emporor with no clothes himself. this day of friday the 13th is the day of his return to power. the military, which is secretly in power will hand over the white house to the bloated -- according to one report trump is telling people he would be reinstated as president. that explains why the hashtag trump is a laughing stock trended. it was cooked up and pushed by
4:02 pm
right wing heretics. >> the morning of august 13th, it will be the talk of the world. hurry up. let's get the election pulled down and right the right. >> august 13th, donald trump will be reinstated as president. elias is going to overturn -- >> nearly 30% of the republican party actually believes the nonsense. well, it is past 7:00 p.m. and joe biden is still the president. he is not a holgram. because there is no constitutional mechanism or legal tool to reinstate a man who was rejected by 81 million americans and lost his re-election period. period. the shear stupidity of it all masks the disturbing under belly of the republican party in this
4:03 pm
moment. today is another example of how far the right wing misinformation regime is willing to go. the only american president to try to overthrow a free and fair election prompting the dhs to include a warning about domestic terrorist warning of violence stemming from conspiracy theories about election fraud and alleged reinstatement. the same poison fuelling a two two-pronged attack. this has become acceptable to republicans why did they allow
4:04 pm
all of this poison? the united states is increasingly multiracial and urban and the white population is shrinking. more interesting, the majority of the americans under 18 are ethnically diverse, the majority. the census showed us is that the bulk of the population growth is in states like texas and zone where republicans get to draw the lines in a way that ensures they keep more power than they deserve. that is what we call gerrymandering, folks, when old america keeps the new america from bully blossoming. democracy can die in broad daylight. every time democracy ekes out a victory republicans throw up more hurdles. the next few months will pose a
4:05 pm

4:06 pm
wider investigation to tie what happened january 6th to the day of the election or immediately this after. as the revelations come out about the white house influencing the justice department and getting people there to say that the election results were fraudulent and use it as a basis to over turn the election results, i think this calls for an expensive review of what happened. the important thing is to look at all of the things can be shared with the american people and with history. criminal investigations, you know, a lot of it happens in grand juries and a lot is not revealed to the public. there has to be an accounting of who was involved and what did they do.
4:07 pm
>> there is not a history in this country of prosecutoring a former president. right now the former president, donald trump. election officials opened it up in february about that phone call. and i wonder if combining that fact that he is already under that criminal investigation and they are coming out to look at what could be crimes. if you were still in a position to do so, would you be open to the idea that perhaps donald trump should be prosecuted? >> yeah. i certainly think that, you know, everybody that was involved in that matter, and i
4:08 pm
mean you can't look at it. you can't just say january 6th is the only thing we need to look at. we have to go back a couple of months and everybody involved in that should be investigated and potentially prosecuted. prosecution of a former president involves a range of things. there are national interests and divisions that would unleash. and that is not to say he shouldn't be held accountable. at a minimum an investigation needs to be done to find out who exactly was involved and what was the connection between the people in the white house and the people who were there. >> you were there when merrick garland was chosen to be on the supreme court.
4:09 pm
do you get the sense he is over cautious in that regard and others that might have been complaceit in a insurrection? >> maybe 25, 30 years at this point. i think he is a person that is going to do things by the book. he understands what happened on january 6th and the negative impact it had on the nation. i think he feels that and understands that and is prepared. you know, i think merrick went
4:10 pm
in to the job understanding this. i think he has got the type of backbone that will let him make the appropriate determination in the cases. now let's get to the other half of the threat to democracy. republicans are using the big lie if they believe it or not. they are deciding to use it to their advantage. you sued multiple states here in these red states and now have it happening on steroids. in your view, how do we put the brakes on that enough to allow enough people to be able to vote so we have a free and fair election in 2022. and are you worried we will not have a free and a fair election?
4:11 pm
>> i am concerned if we do not pass the for the people act that we can get to a point where they will put measures in place that will be irreversible. there is a notion that you you could overturn a vote by the people in a presidential election. the best way is to pass the legislation the house has passed and is pending in the senate. >> the reaction among the republican party does not seem
4:12 pm
to be adjusting the policies. it seems to be they are gearing up to gerrymander the hell out of the map meaning even if democrats win huge majorities they will not get the seats that will go with it. what can we do about that? >> well, you pass the for the people act banning partisan gerrymandering. we have been working on this since january 2017 and we put people in place in the states who control the process. governors and secretaries of state in a variety of states all acting as a check against republican legislatures.
4:13 pm
there is an advocacy campaign. we know the population is more diverse and more young. all of these things tend to favor democrats. the overall population was fueled by 90% of that from people of color. you should have a greater democratic representation from texas, as well as from other states. >> yeah. before i let you go, do you have any scoops on whether or not you think any version of for the people actually will pass.
4:14 pm
it looks like the original for the people act. it should be called the john lewis act. that is the one his team wrote. is any of it going to pass? >> i hope so. i think leader schumer has ideas. senators seem to be more concerned about the filibuster than about our democracy. i am cautiously optimistic that this can happen. senator schumer said this is the first thing they are going to take up when they come back from the august recess. but that is a vital, vital piece of legislation. all right. and coming up next on the reid out, the cynical covid politics
