greene to congress. they said their support of trump will carry them to republicans on the ballot. we have ellison barber. why are people focused on these trump voters? where you are is a solidly red district. nobody there has carried the vote like donald trump did, but people there seem to believe that the enthusiasm around him is transferrable. that's notable because that hasn't been the case in other places. >> reporter: right, and here that does seem to be kind of the difference. when you talk to people here and you ask them questions -- you mentioned the congressperson who represents this district, marjorie taylor greene, the support for donald trump here, and it's probably not a surprise when i tell you they don't trust the media here, they don't trust many institutions, they don't fully trust the election process. but despite all of that, they

still say that they will vote, and it really is two kind of key reasons. one, they do not like the direction this country is going in, they say, particularly when it comes to the covid restrictions, mainly vaccine mandates. they believe there is a snowball to this country becoming a socialist or communist country, ask they don't like that and think maybe if the process isn't perfect, it's worth at least still getting out and voting. but what seems to galvanize people here and why they keep telling us they will show up nd vote in the midterms even in there is not a candidate they like on the ballot. abortion is not just an important issue for many of them, it is the issue, and it will make them show up at the polls. listen. how important is religion to you in your personal life and does it impact how you vote?

>> it's very important, and yes, it does impact how i vote. >> reporter: you'll see mostly values aligned with the christian faith, so those protecting our freedoms, protecting life. does your faith impact how you vote? >> yes, it does. it has a lot to do with it. because god is the creator of life. >> reporter: and that last voter you heard from there, he told us that if a republican, even though he identifies himself as a republican, if a republican candidate identified as pro-choice and supported abortion rights, he said he would absolutely not vote for them. geoff? >> ellison barber there, thank you for your reporting. for a lot of americans faith guides them in both life and

politics. but increasingly among some white evangelicals, faith and polarized politics are dividing the church. that's a focus in"the atlantic" says, when the christian faith is politicized, churches become repositories not of grace but of grievances, places where tribal identities are reinforced where fears are nurtured. every line was lyrical. in the piece you ask why is it that white evangelical christianity has become political? your reporting, how did it answer your question? >> thanks for having me on, geoff. several things make it a

complicated subject. it was a convergence of a number of factors. once, in the early '70s and early '80s, evangelicals in particular weighed on politics, and over time politics became central to their identity, really actually more central, i would say, to their identity than their faith. i think a lot of people didn't know that, they weren't aware of it. i think sociology and culture and politics became the interpretive lenses where they understood faith. i think a deep fear if you talk to evangelical christians, a direction the culture is going in. when you are seize by a lot of fear, that capitalizes on a lot of bad things, including hate. a couple other things, grievance

and see resentments that have been part of the evangelical culture for many years. and the last thing i would say as part of a feedback loop of social media, cable news, people are getting 15 to 20, 30 hours a week of this and it shapes the order of their loves. i think it's causing an inversion for the proper christian of where the love should be. >> how do you interpret donald trump's influence in this entire process? you didn't mention him my name, but majority, start of when evangelicals started to enter into politics. i think the george w. bush era, a lot of evangelical christians would see as the high point given he was one of them. george w. bush had a testimony. write inscriptions and hymns into his speeches, and then

track that line to donald trump. what does donald trump mean to the evangelical church and what does all of that mean for our politics? >> you ask a good question. he was a huge factor. something of an inflection point, because i think he normalize the mode of discourse, destructive and embraced by a lot of the evangelicals, a lot of evangelicals, not all, but a lotfeature. trump didn't come out of nowhere but he was the product of these currents. he won in 20916 primary and amplified all of the worst tendencies. his mode of politics, cruelty, dishonesty, pathology, conspiracy theories, that was definitional to who he was and over time it became definitional to what the evangelical political movement was. so its affect on politics is very, very bad.

martin luther king said that the church shouldn't be the servant of the master of state but the conscience of the state. in this case i think it's the opposite but i would say worse is its effect on politics, considerable, it's effect of the church. i'm a christian and it's painful for me to see christ to be deformed and watching the world seeing this thinking this is is a moral freak show. why would i want to be a part of this? i think it's bad for politics, worse for the church and i think in the end the people of the christian faith need to be more faithful and -- if they do, i think they could become a more inviting community to a world that's in a lot of pain, and experiencing a lot of division, and hurt. >> and peace for the atlantic, titled "the evangelical church is breaking apart." great to have you with us.

news, white house counsel says that president biden determined that keeping the documents from congress "is not in the best interests of the united states." joining us now is nbc news justice correspondent pete williams. pete, the white house rejected donald trump's requests. so what happens now and will the national archives then turn over those documents to the january 6th committee? >> reporter: depends on what a federal judge says. there have been three letters from the white house now waving executive privilege. first sort nf response to a request from the committee that the archives be passed along. two other letters include the one last night directly responding to president trump's assertion of executive privilege and the white house saying "we don't agree." the former president asked a federal court to block this because without intervention by the court, the archivist will begin handing them over november 12th. a hearing november 4th evalue
