good afternoon. i'm aaron gilchrist in for yasmin vos began. new information on the man who took hostages at a texas synagogue and what he was asking authorities to do. a major winter storm hitting

overwhelming cooperation with the local authorities and the fbi and they did one hell of a job. this was an act of terror. not only was related to someone who had been arrest 15 years ago and been in jail for 10 years. and they did just a great job. i also told him i wanted to make sure we got the word out to synagogues and places of worship that we won't tolerate this. >> nbc's sam brock on the ground in texas for us now. bring us up to speed on the investigation there and what we know about that who is tage taker. >> reporter: good afternoon. there is activity here. we saw a couple dozen what looked like investigators in all black walking into the beth israel congregation. the fbi's response team is on

scene. the joint terrorism task force is working to probe any links for terror. the question is what were his mottives in this? we heard from his brother from a statement who suggested he was suffering from mental health issues. was anti-semitism at the front of it. the fbi has not weighed in on that matter part of this investigation. senior law enforcement officials have informed nbc news that the demand in this case from the suspect was the freeing of a federal prisoner 20 or 25 miles away from where i am. a person convicted of attempting to kill people. is it coincidence that it unfolded at a synagogue? these are open ended questions. from president biden the top of

rain and heading into the reasoning hours that's the big concern because that could lead to icing, a quarter or half an inch of ice on power lines and limbs could lead to power outages. duke energy warned that residents could see widespread powe autoyou knows but ahead of the storm the utility said they mobilized 11,000 workers and pulling resources from other states. earlier today i spoke with the spokesperson who gave us an update on where things stand now. >> we have outages. we have 75,000 right now throughout the carolinas and scattered so we are getting precipitation all over north and south carolina pally here in charlotte. >> reporter: is it nonstop for the crews today? >> it is. i think it's been all week.

since thursday. so this is what it looks like right now on radar. the blue is the snow. you can see the last few frames that cold air filling in the state of tennessee. and then you see the pinks and purples. the yoel lows and greens are ra. that's what we look at right now. you can see that line further to the north. started in the plains and then sort of took a turn to the northeast. right now towards the northeast. winter alerts from new england to the gulf coast starts. the ice storm warning is big concern here near purple. south carolina. that's where we are most

concerned with the thickest ice. this is sort of an explainer. you have the glaze on the trees, slick roadways. quarter to half inch you see the tree limbs breaking. road conditions are dangerous and then half an inch to an inch is impossible to travel. power lines down. multi-day power outages. we have seen up to nine inches in mississippi. aaron, this map really i think just when i look in mississippi that snow line is so far south and had flurries in florida. we're going to continue to track this for you and up to a foot of snow in the a southeast tonight. that's in a bit. >> michelle, cathy, thank you both. turning to philadelphia

something mist change? >> thank you. this is a very difficult time for democrats, for this country. of course we have republicans who are basically following trump and the kind of division that he's causing among not only people of color but the kind of divisions he's causing between the so-called haves and the have notes. and so republicans are not going to confront trump. they're going to do whatever they're told. they don't have the spine to stand up against him and so we are in a difficult position. we have two democrats, manchin and sinema. they are holding up the democratic agenda. they have decided that they're going to stick with support of the filibuster and they don't care whether or not they undermine the rights of

minorities and blacks in this country. you know, blacks have fought very hard to make this a stronger democracy. we have worked hard for equal rights, for civil rights and voting rights and these two are basically saying to us they don't care. they don't choir about us. they don't care what it means to weaken the ability to participate in this democracy. and what everybody better understand is this democracy is at stake. and these domestic terrorists are organizing. the president is helping them in the way he speaks to them. the way that he encourages them. and so, we're in for it. i would love to be able to come out of that senate with the votes for voting rights but it is going to be very difficult if not impossible. >> given that reality and you mentioned senator sinema and manchin, what does the party

need to do. what do democrats need to do to change the narrative around this particular issue particularly going into the midterms? >> it is not what democrats need to do. we are doing everything that can be done. it's what republicans need to do. why is it we don't have one republican that will stand up for the voting rights for people in this country? and so i hear a lot of talk about our president. he is fights as hard as he is. i don't know why people think that he can make manchin and make sinema do what is right. they have sent this signal. they have been very clear about it. they don't care at minorities and blacks. they don't care about people. in their own districts who they deny the voting rights. undermine the voting rights. and so it's not so much what can democrats do. we're doing everything that we can. it is up to the republicans to

stand up. one republican. just stand up. we have two serving on the commission of january 6 and only two on that issue. where are the republicans. where's one republican who's going to stand up and stay to manchin and so sinema i'm with you if you decide that you ire going to do a carveout on filibuster to get voting rights passed? >> talk more about the mid firm. the former president focused a lot on their goals after potentially taking pour there in congress. i want to play congressman andy biggs. >> 2022, let's take back the u.s. house. let's take back the united states senate. and let's take back ever governor, attorney general, education leader and the down ballot tickets.

chuntd. with me to discuss is bobby ghosh and rabbi rick jacobs. bobby, who is sadiki and why is the release an important thing for suspect? >> a pakistani woman picked up in 2008. and by american forces. and interrogation she tried to shoot at her captors and seemed to have injured some of them and she's been held in fort worth not far from where this hostage situation took place and become a sort of icon in the jihad community. she is very frequently cited as a great example. this is not the first time somebody tried to exchange hostages for her release.

isis has done that on at least a couple occasions. pakistani government suggested that she should be released at one point when bergdahl was held. she is held up as an icon, been associated with the senior leadership of al qaeda. she was quite close to the mastermind of the 9/11 bombing and briefly married to his knew few of a guantanamo bay prisoner so very well-known in jihadi circles and getting her release seems to be sort some of a -- very important to various strands of the jihad world. >> rabbi jacobs, given what bobby laid out for us and what we know about the history and this did happen yesterday at a synagogue, do you think federal

authorities too readily dismiss the possibility that this was motivated by anti-sometism? >> there's no doubt that the underlying whole premise of yesterday was anti-semitism. the hostage taker didn't go to an mcdonald's or a random place. that's the story of anti-semitism, to single jews out. it is parent of a larger pattern and i don't know one jewish person in the dark about the attack. it is important to discover what we know about the hostage taker but a community gathered in prayer and somebody came in benlt on harm. that is hardly what we call a detail. that is a focal point and grateful that president biden was right on point.

uptick in all forms of hatred, racism in our society. so it is not an accident that anti-semitism which is a root hatreds in kind of human history and would be a focal point and the truth is that we as a community are feeling particularly vulnerable at this moment and it is a natural time to focus on security, the thing that is will give us greater safety gathering as we did yesterday for a sabbath morning service to pray for peace. that should be something to do without fear. it is not something in this moment we do. the community is focused on how do we build more security, more protection? what are the different things to do to keep the community safe?
