usually prohibited during, or do you rather to the voting rights act. but when has president ever seemed to matt into this conservative court? let's be frank about it, because on monday's 5 to 4 ruling, the court actually agreed to take up the case next term, and issued a stay on the lower court's decision. chief justice, john roberts, sided with the liberals, and that's pretty significant. let me explain why. back in 1981, john roberts joined the justice department as a special assistant to the attorney general, focusing on voting rights. now, at the time, there was a battle in congress over the reauthorization of parts of the 1965 voting rights act. congress wanted to make it easier for voters to fight discriminatory practice. roberts was tapped by the reagan administration, to leave the charge against that effort. he drafted dozens of speeches, oh peds, and talking points. in fact, and one of those memos,

the future justice said the changes would lead to a quote, quota system for those who had elected office. now, it's important to know that roberts and company actually feel back then. in 1982, the real authorization passed with bipartisan support. but once appointed to the court, roberts continued his crusade against voting rights. in 2013, he offered the majority opinion and shelby county, which effectively ended the preclearance process, guarding a major part of the voting rights act. last time roberts joined his conservative colleagues holding arizona's voting restrictions. so how do the conservative on the court manage to lose this guy? well, we should be clear here for a moment. it is not that roberts disagreed with his fellow conservatives on the substance of the alabama case, no. in fact, his opinion hinted that he is open to reconsider the governing standard used by the lower court. his real problem here is more

earned the name, or the nickname, i should say, tough on ron because criticisms of him rarely seemed to stick. it was also apply to criminal gangsters, you know, and mobsters. but trump truly seems to have taken that ability to another level. i would argue a rogan roy level, if you are familiar with the show succession. you've seen republican officials sensing a momentary weakness to criticize trump after january six, only four to go nowhere. i think that only people like lindsey graham, marco rubio, ted cruz, that list can go on and on. will republicans ever be able to escape the grip of donald trump? >> yeah. we it's not even necessarily -- it's a testament to donald trump. he's managed to turn criticism into feel that he can then used to pump more kinetic energy into the right-wing base. but the reason why i think the answer to question is know is,

trump is a reflection of the larger right-wing echo chamber. so even if you take trump out of the equation, in some way, all he's really doing is channeling and harnessing what is happening in this cauldron of extremism. and the fever swamps. so, at this point, it's bigger than trump. he is a reflection of, it so he gets the harnesses. there's clearly a back and forth, and obviously, he's the beneficiary politically from that relationship. but at this point, and i think the clearest illustration of it is, of the power of the right-wing echo chamber, there was only one major voice on january 7th, 2021. that was attacking republicans for not being pro january 6th insurrection enough, and was russian bow, it was one of his last podcasts. his party gift to the party was to tell it to embrace what happened on january 6th. and in a way, he's sort of signaled where they're gonna go. he got a kick start of that process. and if that's really his parting, if it's because of where he sat in the right-wing echo chamber. so the answer of your

white house staffers said that they were taping documents back together that he ripped up and tried to throw away. so he's doing exactly what's the were criticizing hillary about. using private servers for communication etc. taking documents down to mar-a-lago, which, you know, it is as secure as it could be. probably reading them on the golf cart on the gulf courts to show off to his friends. but there won't be any backlash. this is the problem. with watergate, all joking aside, watergate brought down a president. it brought down a president. but this, it's just sadly, it's just another talking point. it's not going to bring down trump. and, you, know when you are talking about his followers, mcconnell, i think mitch mcconnell just figures, hey, i'm old enough to end my career if this doesn't work out. but all the other ones are like, we need trump support because

we need to move on. we want to move up. mcconnell's like, listen, i have one more chance to stop a supreme court justice and then i'm done. that's pretty much it for him. so he's almost speaking the truth. the fact that they -- they tagged this genie freedom fending america, i cannot recognize the republican party anymore. it doesn't make sense when you yell about american patriotism, and then you censor the one republican who says, hey, maybe we shouldn't attacked the capitol after a legitimate election? i can't figure them out, as a comedian, i can't tell you how hard it is to make fun of them i come up with something crazier than what they actually do. that >> molly, speaking of republicans, let's talk about florida for a moment. ron desantis signaling his support for a particularly sociopathic piece of legislation making its way to the floor state house. lgbt groups are calling it,

published a story about the african cup of nations, one of the world's biggest soccer tournaments. let's be honest. you have to get into the results of the tournament, like how senegal won the trophy for the first time by defeating, my heavily favored egypt, i'm just getting over it. but instead, let's take a closer look at the article itself. amid goose and covid, africa focuses on what's important, soccer. so let me get this straight here for a moment. if african nations are playing in a soccer tournament, and africans around the continent, which are about 1.3 billion people in total or watching it, somehow it means they prioritize watching sports over military coups and a deadly pandemic. it seems a bit too humanizing, no? well, the new york times was awkward at best, or flat out offensive, and they later updated the headline to read this. africa cup of nations: soccer

failure. you know, in a bad way. and i wish there had been more. >> alonso, and the aftermath of all the nfl's, news, about racial issues, the mother of cincinnati bangles player, eli apple, had an idea to issue a challenge to nfl teams, which i just had so much respect for. she challenged nfl teams to post a picture of their front office. to, their social media staff. and number three, their cafeteria and cleaning staff with the quote, let's see what we'll see. teams, as you can imagine themselves, did not response. you can imagine why not. would you make of the spotlight being cast on the nfl for these issues? would you make of that framing? >> well, and by the way, that tweet was just absolutely brilliant. so good for her for doing that. and you know, regarding that, regarding jay-z, regarding the

issue of the few black head coaches and these fake interviews that they're giving two coaches, to be a black head coach, the owners of the nfl, it's a very tight, very small club. they will pretend to care because it's good for publicity, or whatever. and then, that issue blows over. and they keep going business as usual. you know, i think, i'm sure jay-z tried, and i'm sure he had good intentions, and maybe believed that they were going with some sort of good faith negotiation on it, if they were gonna actually listen to him. but of course, they didn't. and it's all very obvious. you have brian flores with his lawsuit about, you know, inviting him for an interview for a head coaching job, and then bill belichick accidentally sent out the tweet, congratulating him, which was supposed to someone else, because the job had already been given away when he was interviewed. the owners, the commissioner, they have a club.

they're not letting anyone into the club. they're not letting anyone of color into the club,, unless they absolutely have to, even to the detriment of teams, not winning. getting rid of coaches that are good or not promoting coaches that know what they're doing, but there's nothing you can do, right? it's a private club. the only time their public is when it comes to getting a tax break from congress. they are public institution, otherwise, they are completely private institution. and i don't know if there is a way to force them to open the door. they don't care. all right, i think we've reached a connection with andrew been. andrew, i don't know if you've had a chance to hear my initial question to you, it was about whether or not you agreed with the assessment that jay-z was basically being used as donny foxx worth was saying earlier, former nfl player, that he was being used as a cover to the real problems that the nfl has

without actually bringing up any meaningful or substantive -- substantive change. >> dominick fox worth as one of the most thoughtful people on his issues and he's not the first person to bring this up. this was a topic that was a real business software jay-z the moment he announced the partnership of the nfl. there were players among whom eric reid, for example, who was one of the players who kneeled with karl kaepernick and he called jay-z a sellout. and what he said we've moved past kneeling and it's back to this distance the players had this vision for what they wanted, but the nfl wanted may have been a live different. there have been a lot of initiatives and teachers with the players, they wanted to feel like they were heard. and against the backdrop of international -- racial protest in 2020, we saw the nfl issue this really striking statement, roger goodell said he was wrong, and he should've listened to the players earlier on these topics. >> let me switch gears really
