11:02 pm
with us. there are reports of a number of explosions in the ukrainian city of lviv. now lviv is close to the polish border, and the place where hundreds of thousands of refugees from ukraine have fled through, or pass through, as they look for safety from the russian invasion. let's go live now to the city where -- . good morning to you sir! what can you tell us? what's happening this morning? >> so around 6:15 this morning, that's been the case for many days now. airstrikes. the town is becoming used to having their nights disturbed by air sirens. about 15 minutes later, i counted 23 or 24 explosions. it came from the direction of the city airport. which is about three or four kilometers from where we are. now there is differing reports about where they're the airport was struck. or the eight aviation repair

ukraine. >> concerning development, as to, as you mentioned. you think this was perhaps cruise missiles that was fired? specifically targeting that airport? because we know that lviv, as we said, is where many ukrainian refugees have fled to or pass on the way out of the war zone. >> well, both ukrainians and nato that are doing the re-supplying, are incredibly cagey about the routes that they are using. and the locations where things like new ammunition are going into. and where they're being stored. before they're distributed further in the field. but i think it's a pretty good guess that various locations around lviv, and this part of ukraine, are part of that resupply operation. hence why, i think russians are targeting it. if it was the airport, they've hit directly, then i think we
11:05 pm
can conclude that what they probably want to do is take the runway out of action. and stop the functional airfield for the ukrainian fighters. if that's what they want to use it for. if it was the aviation report facility which was what was struck, then i think it is evidence that we could take out of facility that was helping the war effort. and keeping the warplanes up in the air. >> i do appreciate that reporting. more for you about the day. for now. >> the uk's ambassador to the united nations has told sky that russia committed war crimes in bombing of its theater in mariupol where facility were taking shelter. -- the building had the word children, written on the -- outside of it. but russia says its country was not responsible for the attack. reporting, from united nations

11:32 pm
that's been the case for many days now, the town is becoming used to having their nights disturbed by air sirens. about 15 minutes later, i counted at least three or four explosions. they have come from the direction of the city airport. which is about three or four kilometers from where we are now. there is differing reports about whether the airport was struck, or an aviation repair facility next to it. -- airstrikes to a military base over the weekend. the expectation was that russians might targets deliberative airports, it remains untouched until now. but it looks like it's exactly what they have done. a strategic target. in the report of russian bombers up in the air as well, around that time. at the moment, we see air sirens warning since those strikes. we don't know whether or not it was from those bombers, that
11:33 pm
the missiles came. or perhaps neighbors from the black sea. which has been the case before. but my hunch, is that it would be precision guided missiles. it does look like they have a particular target in mind. and they have hit that target precisely. which is the mayor port area, here in lviv. again, russia showing that it can and is willing to reach very much into the depths of western ukraine. >> a concerning development as you've mentioned. you think that this was perhaps cruise missiles that were fired, specifically targeting the airport there. is that being used for resupply? because of course, our viewers would know that lviv is a city that many ukrainians have fled to, or pass through, on their way out of the war zone. but >> both ukrainians and nato who are doing the resupply in

let's now bring in matthew. she is from the un agency. it's been of the polish ukrainian border. matthew, good to have you with us. of course, being part of the border that is not too far from lviv. people have been exiting the country, going through it. so your thoughts on the fact that the city now seems to have become under some rocket attack this morning? >> good morning. across the, and there's red certain parts of ukraine, have been considered slightly safer parts of the country as you know. there has been fewer attacks in those regions. and we are aware that a number of internally displaced people have moved to the rest. particularly to lviv, because it was seen as relatively safe. we do not have any confirmation, or update on these reports. and of course, we would reiterate the importance and
11:37 pm
how imperative that it is that civilian structures are not targeted. are not affected in that international, humanitarian law. and that it is upheld. but of course, if we seen more conflicts in and around lviv, there is a big chance that more people know. particularly to the polish border which is not far from that city. at the moment, the number of refugees and poland is already very close to 2 million. so there is that possibility that more people move in the coming days. if indeed there is an intense -- around it. >> yes, very concerning that lviv now seems to be coming under attack by the russians. and what is your standing by how many people have come here by the way out of the city? i assume that people have already fled from lviv. -- embassies have moved to that city as well. >> that is our understanding as well. we do not have any exact
11:38 pm
testament that some people are talking about. maybe a couple million people in and around the lviv. i have course, that is very concerning. at the same time, there are big concerns throughout the country of ukraine. >> yeah, and matthew just take us through what's been happening for you guys in the past couple of days or so. what is the situation like at the borders? we know there are many and -- millions of people who have passed out of ukraine. describe for us the embassy -- the exit points out of ukraine? >> for the last carpal of days, the borders have been quieter. the -- or ten days ago. but refugees are still coming. they make it through the border points, which are now, seven in the main one in lviv is now more structured, more ordered. they are more tense. there are better systems in

11:40 pm
>> near the border, there's a couple of giant form are shocking depots and warehouses, instead of being converted into reception centers. so that refugees have the option of sleeping, of course. but there's also intervention there. medical support, food, registration, the police are there as well. and -- that's very much a temporary solution. provide information. and to former refugees about their options. from there, they are generally, taken away on buses. or sometimes trains. >> -- increasingly the polls are trying to move them away from krakow, from warsaw, from the biggest cities. and they are calling on under municipalities to step up and
11:41 pm
provide reception. there has also been a very generous offer of hosting in this country. citizens and individuals are also taking ukrainian refugees into their homes as well. >> thank you for that math you, my apologies. a little bit to matthew there for poland. but matthew, with the news that lviv seems to have come under some kind of attack. you mention that too many people have gone into that place and got into that city. what kind of things would be put in place if there's gonna be another exit of people across that city and across the borders? >> i think the problem is that the support of poland, particularly united nations partners, but also the polish humanitarian sector. are aware that this is possible. and aware that this could be coming. and having extra resources in the country, in the cities of
11:42 pm
course. which is where the majority of people might end up. but also around the border. and that's things like specialists in child protection agencies, and much more work on human trafficking on the border. but also, the provisions of basic needs, of things like blankets. and -- . and information for refugees. and trading, and volunteers. so, all that kind of stuff has been happening on a bigger scale, i think. in the recent days. >> okay, matthew. stop motion for the agency. thank you for your time. thank you for your work. we'll speak to you again. >> the uk's ambassador to the united nations has told sky news that russia yates at war crimes after the bombing of a theater in mariupol, that was sheltering hundreds of civilians. the ambassador says that his country is not responsible for
