investigation into what happened will finally start laying out its case to the american public. thursday will be the first primetime hearing of the committee and we're already getting details on what they'll present including tapes and interviews with first daughter, ivanka trump and jared kushner. this is happening as committee members say their goal is to give everyone the overall big picture. >> the american people i think, we've seen a number of bombshells already, there is a great deal they haven't seen but perhaps most importantly the public hasn't seen it woven together, how one thing led to another, how one lying to overturn the election led to another and ultimately led to terrible violence. the first non peaceful transfer of power in our history. we want to tell that comprehensive narrative. >> comprehensive narrative. in a moment i want to break down what that could mean with msnbc legal analyst joyce. the latest details on police inaction in the texas school shooting from an investigative

retort or who has been big into this. and another record americans didn't want to see, gas prices jumping yet again a live report on the inflation just ahead. and later on this hour, a story that will give you some hope, hopefully on this sunday. i'll talk to a boy who stories getting -- brody reiter and his mom are ahead this hour. don't want to miss that. we begin today with no reaction to thursday's long-awaited history from the january 6th capitol attack. expect to be the most comprehensive record yet of what led up to the insurrection, the committee planning to present in primetime live witnesses pre-taped interviews, and previously unseen video. gary graham bob joining us now from capitol hill. also joined by msnbc legal analyst and attorney joyce vance. gary, let me start with you and talk you through what -- i want we can expect to hear this coming week? >> well, yasmin, after more than 100,000 documents photos

and videos, talking to more than 900 witnesses, january six when he started ready to start presenting but they may know, who they heard it from to the american public. it's all part of their efforts to show that there was an effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election and to threaten the american people, and show them exactly how this happened. who is this for, this isn't for the committee on thursday night, everything you'll hear on thursday night they already know. this is gonna be a presentation to the american people, analysts cheney one of the committee's coast chair is gonna tell us what's she learned throughout this process. >> let me say it this way, i have not learned anything that made me less concerned. >> what made you more concerned? >> well, i think the extent, the expats, how broad this multi prong effort was. >> was it a conspiracy? look, if you look at the court

filings -- >> do you believe it was a conspiracy? >> i do. it's extremely broad, it's extremely well organized, it's really chilling. >> represented adam schiff, another member of this committee, said this morning that they're targeting this audience that still has an open mind about the facts given. and of course, yasmin, this has become so politicized. there's also a race against the clock here, this is the first of a number of series of hearings they're gonna be holding, and it's in november of course this is the big midterm election. kevin mccarthy has made it very clear, this committee does not exist in this current form after the midterm, if the republicans take the house, yasmin. >> key word, there if. come midterm election, gary graham back i know you have reporting to do, i'll let you go, thank you for that thorough report i appreciate it. joyce, let's talk through some of this. essentially, adam schiff saying as gary reported, targeting an

audience who has an open mind. i'm wondering, joyce, is any of that audience left? >> there is that audience laughter. is a lot of people who haven't made up their mind which i think is very difficult for those of us who follow the details of this investigation. but that's the important issue for the committee, can they breakthrough, will their prime time showing serve that purpose of letting people, who might otherwise hear this evidence, actually take a look at it. >> what are you to be looking for this thursday, the beginning of this kind of public phase of these hearings, these primetime hearings types of evidence, witnesses will you be looking for? >> i suspect, will get thursday night will include an overview of the entire process. what the committee expects will be establishing the scope from the hearing, so it's precisely this notion that liz cheney is raising. this notion that there was a conspiracy, and agreement among

two or more people to achieve an illegal object to have, and one of the challenges that the committee has always faces that the evidence is very complicated, it runs down a lot of different rabbit holes. the challenge thursday night is to provide some context, to give the american public a sense of what they can expect to hear, and how will all fit together ultimately. >> you know it's interesting, we've been talking about the fact about navarro, bannon being held in criminal contempt. we know that we're not gonna have that testimony obviously, meadows as well, we won't have that testimony. he has provided significant amount of met evidence, text message exchange, specifically on this program throughout this network. dan scavino has also cooperated to a certain extent without providing testimony, do you think there's gonna be any smoking gun as we approach this public phase of the hearing, considering the fact that we don't have testimony from some key individuals inside the trump white house? >> members of the committee

have suggested that are various times about using this precise language, that there will be smoking guns. -- j.b. raskin said that he will expect that the hearings will blow the roof off the house. what might they have if they don't have these witnesses, it's possible that they'll have their staffers, for instance cassidy hutchinson, who worked with mark meadows has given the committee voluminous evidence. we haven't heard a lot of the little details, whether she can talk with some precision about this story that meadows actually physically burn documents in the fireplace, in his office, after meeting with the representatives who had introduced former president to this official doj, jeffrey clark, was part of the plot to turn doj to a political arm of the former presidents can't pain. there's a lot a very interesting information, that

can come to light. >> quickly joys it's up to the doj, not congress, to file any charges especially after the public phase of this hearing. what would the bar be for something like that, considering how it seems the doj has been quite resistant up until this point to in fact file criminal contempt charges? >> the doj is working on a separate trap from the committee, i don't think the contempt charges really have a lot to do with these sub the investigation into january six. doj will take a look at the evidence from beside -- merrick garland has repeatedly made it clear that he will follow the evidence wherever it leads. >> joyce vance, as always great to see you, thank you. all right, we're following breaking news out of west ponce, and retired judge who was shot to death in a targeted attack by a gunman with an apparent hitless, that hit list included -- tony evers, senate leader mitch

mcconnell, a michigan governor -- u.s. district judge -- lost her only son in a similar attack almost two years ago said this of the killing earlier today. >> we took an oath to do our job. we took an oath to uphold the constitution. we stand on the front lines protecting to moxie in this country. and yet, we are not protected, some things gotta be done and this is not gonna be the last judge who loses his or her life. it sickens me to say that, but it's just a matter of time. >> it's unclear what the suspect motivation may have been, police say it's related to the judicial system. all right let's talk about the gas prices, continuing to climb to record highs, nationwide but nowhere is feeling that climb more, acutely than and california as i mentioned earlier. scott cohen is in watsonville, outside the bay area, scott, everyone's been i billy sunburn

it was mendocino, if i am correct, where we saw $10 a gallon for gas. which is mind-blowing, what do you see there where you are? >> well, it's statewide, it's not necessarily that bad but we're talking it's upwards of $7 a gallon in parts of the state, well over six on average. 6:32 on average. you can see how that sort of filters through to inflation in general, and really leads the way on inflation. this is the april figures that we have, we'll get more figures at the end of the week for may. but 8.3% overall, 9.3% on food, more than 30% on energy will get the may figures on friday, experts are expecting that overall rank to come down to about 8.2%, barely budging. it brings us to this farmer market and watsonville, we're all these factors come

russia fired cruise missiles from the capital striking a rail car repair facility. ali, good to see you and so this is happening the strikes coming as you have vladimir putin, making another warning to the west, as they prepare to deliver those missiles, what are we learning about that today? >> that's right, yasmin, this morning a series of explosions ships to capitol at about 6 am local time, ukrainians rays say that the russians launched five x 22 cruise missiles from the caspian. as you mentioned, these are the first attacks on the capital since the 29th of april, they shatter this relative calm that's existed in the city for about a month now. as soon as the attack happened, clones of blacks local bc billowing over the city, i see not many people have seen here. the russians said that they

were targeting a delivery of tanks that had been given to the ukrainians by eastern european allies. but people say that's not true, the russians had a rail repair, and they destroy grade wagons which earn essential lifeline to world food supplies as we seen during the course of this war. and of course, these attacks yasmin, i'm in a time when the russian attacks on the east and front -- robe ukraine seems of gain some momentum on the eastern front over the last 24 hours. also, quite frightening, yasmin, ukraine states the nuclear power operated give -- one of those cruise missiles -- nuclear power plant here in kyiv. which is obviously very worrying concern, putin said that if more advanced missiles come to ukraine, he's gonna target, fresh targets in this country. >> some troubling developments

[ normal voice ] whoa. >> another weekend marked by gun violence. at least seven are dead, more than two dozen injured after shootings in three separate states. -- multiple gunman began shooting into a crowd on -- south street. the sheer search for the suitors it's still ongoing but investigators say they now believe one of the disease was previously involved in a physical altercation with one of the suspected gunman just a few hours later. multiple gunman also shot 14 people, three others were hit by cars amid k off in chattanooga, tennessee, in total three were killed. no shooters are in custody.

finally, eight people were shot including multiple children, and one person killed during a graduation party in summer ten, south carolina, just about an hour east of columbia. the investigator they're saying the incident appears to be gang related, arrest once again have not no arrests have been made. sheriff saying these act of violence cannot continue, if children are suffering the consequences. all right, new details continuing to emerge about just what happened in uvalde the day the shooter. a man who first encountered the gunman spoke exclusively to nbc news. this is what he said about what police told him when he tried to enter the school with his own gun. >> he told me, you stay the half back, he said he's already in the school. stay back and shut the bleep up. my intention was to pass some.

i feel guilty, man, because i could've stopped it. >> this is all coming as a bombshell accusation from state senator roland gutierrez, who -- he told nbc news according to a law enforcement official, school police chief pete are john doe, did not have his police radio during the shooting, that hasn't been publicly confirmed. i want to bring in austin american-statesman tony -- who's been doing good reporting on this as well. i. bigot tony, thanks for joining us, at first i want to dig into reporting when it comes -- to the breakdown of it all, tell me what you know about this missing ready of truth or redondo, at what point it is that he put the third officer on the scene, that's when he fell back, what more are you learning as you're digging into this reporting? >>, while this is all consistent with what our own recording -- on taxes has confirmed.

which is that law enforcement sources who are part of this investigation to confirm that based on their work, they don't believe that the police chief, again, this is the school district police chief. had his communication equipment with him when he arrived at the school. that is critical because not only is he the chief, he was also the incident commander. so, this brings questions into focus about what he was learning about this incident as it was unfolding, as 9-1-1 calls were being made by teachers and students still inside that school, or providing information to dispatchers about the number of entered students who were dead at that point. >> i want to remind folks, once again as we talk about the, if he didn't have his radio on him that does not mean that the chief was not hearing gunshots going off inside those classrooms repeatedly, they

heard gunshots going off until 12:21 that day. if there was in fact a barricaded situation, as they say, that means that there's no immediate danger, gunshots going out but no -- all of that aside, let's talk more about what you're learning when it comes to this state senator. he's been talking at the fact that local law enforcement, aren't speaking to him as a display, they're not responding to, i'm not getting in more details. as you do your reporting, are you getting any response from local law enforcement? >> it's striking. as a matter of fact, we are getting no response, frankly the people of uvalde owe the public, the officials of the while they owe the public some sort of explanation. we can all appreciate that there is an investigation going on, that they may not have all the upper, some people have some answers. this is a community that is still reeling from unimaginable

grief. and who are frankly do answers not in the future, but right now the police chief is one person in particular. i think everyone has the desire to hear from. his ability to put us in his footsteps, explain the decision that he was making and potentially not making as this was all unfolding. what he knew, what information was he getting, and how he was acting upon that information. >> you're right about the dead suspect loophole, it might be changes to that as well, tell me what it is in texas, and what the changes may be in the pipeline? >> so, essentially, the dead suspect loophole in many instances has prevented family members as well as journalists here in the state of texas from obtaining information from an investigation, even in cases when a suspect dies in custody.

because the law allows and investigating law enforcement agency to decide itself, want to release our wet not to release when a suspect is -- so, there are concerns that law enforcement could potentially invoke this act of the law, to prevent the public from for example hearing 9-1-1 calls, doing security camera video from the school, body cam footage from the arriving police officers. there has been some discussion though in recent days, as more intention has been placed on this loophole -- saying, he would like to work in the nice -- which by the way does not begin until january to end this loophole. >> let me quickly ask you johnny, people you've been speaking to you, do they think arradondo should step down, as

well as leave his place of police chief, the public -- ? >> certainly, there are people that feel that way. i think the overwhelming sense is that, just tell us what happened. released a statement, a written statement, have a news press conference. do something to make yourself available, to provide a narrative, and accounting for everything that you know that happened that day. he was quite literally, had a front row seat to that tragedy. and was calling on number of shots. >> yeah, and the less available he is, the more -- credibility. that is really laugh which doesn't seem to be much at this point. and prolong the pain, great point. -- thank you tony, great to talk to you. i want to turn now to americans

congress went on vacation and it happened well -- now they're back. they're not gonna let them forget us. our plan is to really flood congress this coming week to take action. and look into our eyes and make a decision on what they're going to do to help young people going forward. like the gun violence generation. >> what is your feeling and your sons? do you think this time is going to be different? >> yeah, since 2018 following the tragedy in parkland, over 156 lifesaving laws have been passed across the country and we helped register young voters. we also brought the nra to their knees and our efforts over the last four years and really what's making this particular moment feel different. instead of lawmakers running away from these tragedies and hiding behind the nra, they're

reaching across the aisle to find common ground. >> white common ground, common sense gun legislations to actually want to see past right now? what do you think is feasible or doable. >> we know that -- they've been sitting in the senate for quite some time -- to figure out a version of that would look like. we are willing to explore that and are cautiously optimistic and hope we can bring something next week to address the issue. >> i want to get a reaction this morning. ruling out an assault weapons bans and background check. let's play that for you. >> oh sorry, we don't have it. a senator saying this that they are going to approach that is -- the senator knowing the reality

on the ground, -- we know they're not even approaching an agreement on assault weapons bans and background check. what do you make of the possibility that they're going to make these changes for gun legislation? >> you know, background checks, for example are kind of the bottom, something along the lines of that will definitely meaningfully reduce gun -- the thing to convey is we really need to get something out now, and we really need to keep fighting for things like safe storage lazar weapon bands, and there's a lot more here. we are really trying to figure out what is feasible in the moment -- and be able to go after that. >> thank you so much. good luck this weekend.

the reopening of a key factory from the largest suppliers of baby formula in this country -- how soon will the formula be available and is it safe. jesse curtis is joining me now in michigan. so, jesse, if you're a parent at home, you're having an issue when it comes to baby formula, you need that formula as quickly as possible, you worry about your kid growing, developing without this formula, when are they gonna get a? >> yasmin for some people

breastfeeding isn't an option. other types of formulas are not option. some of the first formula that's gonna be released from the air when it is released, it's hypoallergenic for me, allen care, when four people left specific dietary restriction. this is not some aren't where we've had auditoriums. we've been stalled [inaudible] with a shortage that was already going on, it became worsened in february when this plant had this shut down. right now there's a lot of scrutiny on abbott nutrition, after they shut down the fda mandated changes before they could reopen. abbott nutrition said they've met an initial requirements, there's a lot of scrutiny being, a lot of eyes on them right now. asked for when we can see this formula released, they started production again, however abbott nutrition doesn't plan on releasing any of this formula, until around june 20th. so, again releasing the formula doesn't necessarily mean on store shelves across the country. also, around june 20th, this

isn't the flip of a light switch. you're not starting back up to the formula -- they're just starting brand that said >> -- hypoallergenic in other specialty formula. they're trying to prioritize the most vulnerable people at this point first and foremost. you could see the timeline is still fluid there. some other good news, obviously it's encouraging for families to hear that formulas being produced here again. -- the u.s. is planning to bring more formula this time from melbourne, australia, to the u.s. on thursday to try to alleviate that stress. here is the reality check that we're looking at, according to data assembly at last look the quarter out of stock rate across the country is around 75% just below 75% and there's something that's upwards of 90% -- so, we are nowhere near the shortage it seems. >> we're looking at about possibly until it's released

student at a colorado school had an opposite effect thanks to other students at the same school. the 12-year-old was actually heartbroken when kids in his class, the academy school of westminster, refused to sign his yearbook as they ended the sixth grade. when he told his mom gets andra she did with moms do. she posted a message on a private facebook -- facebook group to encourage parents at the school to talk to their kids about bullying. the parents vowed to take action lining up and let him know he was not alone.

you think? why did you say? >> it broke my heart. just seeing him -- he was upset. he did not want to talk. he just wanted to listen to music. i just knew that something was wrong, and i knew earlier that day they got their yearbook, but they asked him about the yearbook and he said he didn't have a lot of kids sign it. >> so you decided to post it and say hey, bullying is not okay. he did not tell -- you did not tell brody and went ahead to do it anyway. you wanted parents to be aware that they were being mean to your kid. what happened then? >> i decided to post that mostly because i wanted parents to talk to their kids about bullying. i don't want children to feel that way. and then after i posted it i just received overwhelming

support from the parents at school. they all reached out to me. students reached out to me. the next day these wonderful sky high school students went to brody's yearbook. >> you are one of those high school kids, your mom texted you about what was going on. you were bullied yourself when you are younger. you decided no, that's not happening. i'm showing up for the skid. why was it so important to you? >> it's important for kids, especially at his age. they really did not feel that bad. just being that people were not signing his yearbook were being nice to him. it really hurt. i just wanted to be there for someone to make sure that they could feel better. >> we've got pictures of rudy and all his new friends. brody, how did that feel? when day you have no kid

signing your yearbook and suddenly you've got all these friends showing up for you. big kids, by the way. cool kids showing up for you to sign your yearbook and be there for you? >> so hello whenever a few kids came in, i just knew right away, mommy posted something. >> [laughs] >> that was only one wave of them. then the next day two more waves came. and, yeah. >> how did that make you feel, brody? >> happy. >> happy. it feels good to feel happy, right? >> yes. >> and have friends show up for you in waves.

cassandra, as a mom who continues to embarrass your kid a bit, post away. keep looking through his backpack as moms do. how do you feel now that he's happy now? >> it makes my heart feel full. i just feel so much love and excitement for brody, because he said he's actually excited to go back to school next year, which i've never heard him say anything like that before. he is excited for what the future holds. >> joining us -- , it's so cool, you are in brody's position at one point, joanna. are you excited to go back to school? what is your message to other kids in situations like this? >> my main message is being able to reach out so people can help you and make you feel better. it was just a simple act. yet, right after we did it so
