" i'm natalie morales. thank you for watching. hey there everyone. good to be with you. i am ayman in washington d.c.. 17 months after the attack on the u.s. capitol, the house summits committee in charge of investigating that attack is charged with showing us and the american public its work. with its first live televised hearing on thursday. what did we learn that we did not know before? that is an important question. and the short answer is, a lot. we saw new footage of the violence from that day, and new clues that point to new planning and deliberation by

the proud boys and the oath keepers. we're gonna go more on that point later on in the show. but we also learned a lot more about what was happening in the white house, in the lead up to the insurrection. testimony from donald trump's lawyers, his attorney general, his son-in-law, and his daughter. also just saying that trump knew what he was doing, and he knew it was wrong. for example, trump knew that he had lost the election to joe biden. how do we know that? because his own top data analyst came into the oval office and told him specifically. according to his campaign insider, jason miller. >> i was in the oval office. and at some point in the conversation, the league that a person was brought on. and, i remember, he delivered to the president in pretty blunt terms that he was going to lose. >> but trump, reportedly, argue

that his legal challenges over election fraud would change the result. the only problem? there was no such thing as election fraud and the white house knew it. how do we know that? because of committee testimony from a trump lawyer, tasked with finding that specific fraud who told chief of staff, mark meadows, he was coming up empty handed. >> i remember, a call with mr. meadows. where mr. meadows was asking me what i was fighting. and if i was finding anything. and i remember sharing with him that we were not finding anything. that would be sufficient to change the results in any of the key states. but according to last night's hearing, the flimsier of those election fraud claims. the frizzy air they got, the

harder donald trump lead into it. even after the advice of his attorney general, and his own daughter of onycha, who actually agreed with it. >> i made it clear that i did not agree with the idea saying the election was stolen. and putting out this stuff. which i told the president was bs. >> how did that affect you when he made that statement? >> it affected my -- i respect attorney general barr. so i accepted what he would say. >> but donald trump did not accept what's the attorney general said. in fact, he still doesn't. he responded to the hearings in a series of angry tweets, not tweets i'm sorry. posts, or whatever they call it on his twitter like's social media called truth social. he quote said, it is a one-sided, totally partisan,

witch hunt. the so-called rush on the capitol was not caused by me, it was caused by a rigged and stolen election. he went on to call barr a week and frightened attorney general because he was not man enough for the non existence election fraud. but also, donald trump's an ableist in congress. like this guy, republican scott. who aided trump. and he planned to install a loyalist as acting attorney general, who would use his department to challenge the election outcome. on thursday, panel vice chair liz cheney, trump this bombshell. >> as you will see, representative perry contacted the white house in the weeks after january 6th, to seek a presidential pardon. multiple other republican congressman thought pardons in their roles to attempt to overturn the 2020 election. >> multiple other republicans.

what a bombshell! but a spokesperson for perry called it a loop chris, soulless lie. if we can prove this point, it raises an extremely important question. if you are not doing anything wrong, let alone illegal, what are you seeking a pardon from the president who may have asked me to do this for? all of this is just a little bit of what came out thursday. but all of this is extremely important. because it all suggests that trump's inner circle, his most trusted advisers, his own daughter knew what the rest of this country know. they knew that he had lost the election. they told him that they had lost the election. they knew the election was legitimate, and they told him that. they knew that it was dangerous for the country, for trump, and for themselves. to pretend that the election was stolen. and yet trump did it anyway.

let's parse this all this now with our panel of -- . former prosecutor, barb mcquade. also with, us tara setmayer. as well as daniel moodie, host of the daily podcast and co-host of democracy issues. it's great to have you all with us. but let's start with you. as a prosecutor, who are all these details from the insider interviews on thursday. or at least those that emerged on thursday. tell you, and what is your big picture takeaway here? at is youri think one of the rey important things that was established during the hearing last, night that was new, where the repeated people who told donald trump that he lost the election. we had previously known about some of them, brad raffensperger in georgia, william barr, we knew about the 60 failed lawsuits where the judges told them there was no

fraud. but i think hearing from these insiders's data specialist, his campaign lawyers, culminating with this video of william barr saying very forcefully, these claims of fraud are bs. i think it's more important towards establishing that donald trump acted with fraudulent intent. and big picture, these hearings are really about to eliminate what happened. and document our history, fill in any gaps in the law that needs to be enacted by congress. but going forward, whether this results in some sort of criminal referral, criminal prosecution by the justice department. the fraudulent attend is intentional. it's hard to prove in any white-collar case. you have to prove the person knew that what they were saying was wrong. and to date, we thought there were few instances where they may have told most of us that there was no there there. but now we know that donald trump actually knew this in november, and december. and yet continue to persist in

this lie. i think that some really important evidence that put together a really important criminal case against donald trump. >> tell us what's surprised you the most about the things that we've heard. from all the republicans and insiders for the trump world. what's surprised you? what was your take away from last night? >> yeah, so i was surprised to see how many of them were honest about what took place. because in public, they were saying very different things. the jason miller's of the world, and also bringing in some of the inner circle trump folks who we did not know. like the trump lawyer, and some other names that were not household names. seeing that they were on the ground. the frontline saying that they were no there there, that this happened. i also thought that that was very compelling. and the fact that the committee, right away went straight to the video depositions where there was no mincing of words.

using bill barr, who was the top official in the country at the time. saying this is bs, and letting trump know that early on. set the tone for the legitimacy of what the committee was trying to demonstrate here. and also the fact that liz cheney was, the words concerning her thoughts and the illegality of what trump had done. that was key. she used the word illegal many times. and i think that was for the audience of one. signaling to the justice department, hey mayor garland, we have a case here. we can't profit cape but you can't. and we have the goods and the -- and there was a grand conspiracy that started with the president of the united states. committee chairman bennie thompson said that the people who justified the actions of the insurrectionists reminded him of voices back home in

mississippi, the try to justify slavery. and racist violence in general. did any of that come through in what we saw yesterday? >> i mean, all of it comes through. i think that i want to say that with the he's committee laid out yesterday was been just so clear and stark and grave. right? for months now we have the republicans lying to the american people saying this was a tour. this was regular political discourse. we actually saw the pictures of a gallows. with a noose on it. when representative thompson was making that connection to racist violence, that was what this was. thousands of people believed donald trump's big lie. believed in white supremacy. believe in patriarchy. and are about violence. so when you are making these connections for the american people like they did so eloquently last night, there is

no way that you don't connect those dots. i think that is the purpose of this committee, connecting the dots for the american people. and also to let them know that this coup is not over. the insurrection on january 6th stopped, but the coup is continuing. and the fact is that you would not have these these republican seeking pardons if they did not do something illegal. but we need a pardon for if everything you want to do it on the up and up? >> it's exactly the point that i was making as well about representative perry. why would you be seeking a pardon if you felt you did nothing wrong? >> let me ask you about the kinds of conversations that might be taking place this morning at the department of justice and in the office of eric garland? what does this first hearing need for merrick garland and the broader justice department? what's this due to their own january six investigation? i would expect they are feeling a bit of pressure this money because of what was presented

last night. >> to his credit, merrick garland has said that he actually plans to march watch as much of the hearings as he could. i can imagine an attorney general, saying that is all nonsense and irrelevant i'm tuning in to the noise and just focusing on my job. to his credit, he is interested in hearing information. we know they have asked for the transcripts of 1000 witnesses, and the committee has said not yet, but eventually we will give it to you. so i'm really interested in what the committee has to say. but of course, the jobs of the two and these are very different. the committee here is telling lisa or, documenting it for history, and identifying any gaps in the law where legislation might need to be enacted. justice from his job, will be reared, used to prosecute criminal offenses. there is overlap. lead counsel for the committee is a man named tim hey fee. he is a former u.s. attorney from virginia. really sharp guy. his fingerprints are all over this. we saw on some of the sickness last night conducting some of the questioning's at the video

deposition. they are very much putting this together in the elements that would be required to charge crimes. it's a conspiracy and fraud in the united states, or conspiracy to construct an official proceeding, or both. putting with those elements out, they're defrauding, them they are helping the justice department to see the path. i am confident that the justice department will get their on their own anyway. but it doesn't hurt to get the leaves that they are getting from the committee. then, as or pressure. i do not know. they are under pressure all the time. as we didn't used to say, they are damned if they do and damned if they don't. they might as well just do the right thing. i think that is what they will do. here though and figuring that out will be a challenge. >> all, right taylor, i have to ask you really quick about liz cheney. she released that last night. especially for the fact that you such a prominent figure within the republican establishment. she had this really powerful moment which we did not just say that some of the republican house colleagues sought pardons from trump. she went a step further, talking about the insurrection.

watch this. >> i say this tomorrow publican colleagues who are defending the indefensible. there will come a day when donald trump is gone. but your dishonor will remain. >> powerful words. lofty russian. is it really right? how dishonored are republicans if they are still running on the big lie, and still likely to take back the house in november? >> that is part of the problem. there is no bottom, now, for these republicans. the amount of pocket coming from the party is astonishing at this point. from kevin mccarthy on down. the people who are supposed to know, better the adult in the room. the fact that that long, like we, would be stork lord when the history books are written, concerning her. people will remember that. those, like myself, who are part of the republican party for so long and who left because it had to base to the party became. and because of how dishonest it

is. that right there will always resonate with me. and i think that she knew what she was doing which she said that. will it make a difference? probably not. but when they sleep at night, when kevin mccarthy and the rest of them that have been these absolute hypocrites concerning january 6th, knowing that they violated their oath of office. when they go to sleep at night, on the part of themselves? i don't know for sure. the point is that she is calling him out, and they have the receipts. we saw video footage of kevin mccarthy's own staff running for their lives on january six. and we have that she called it to mccarthy begging donald trump do something that day, because he was, quote, scared. if he still wanted quest to the ring. what does that say about them? it gives you no confidence whatsoever. that today's republican party is capable of actually upholding their oath of office to the constitution. because they demonstrated their fealty to donald trump, and

information revealed in there goes january the 6th hearing is the sheer scale of planning among extremist groups like the proud boys and the oath keepers, in the lead up to you insurrection. in, fact in the lead up to the -- two dozen on the capitol and she began in december 19th. immediately after president trump tweeted out about a big protest in d.c.. adding, be there. we will be wild. he said it was rigged a call to arms. he revealed that the proud boys created a self-described ministry of self-defense leadership shot to discuss these command structure for

january the 6th. and the oath keepers created quick reaction forces to be on standby. with weapons in case president trump invoked the insurrection act. one of the witnesses to testify was a documentary filmmaker. this guy named nick quest at. he filmed this meeting between proud boys leader enrique toronto keepers leader stewart rhodes, the night before the insurrection. and while he did not capture all the audio of the two spoke about, the justice formula that the pair did reference the capital. both pleaded not guilty to seditious conspiracy charges related to the capitol attack. questest also revealed when he met with the proud boys again in the morning of the insurrection he realized that they weren't there for trump's speech. >> they were starting to walk down the -- in an easterly direction towards the capital.

there was a large contingent, more than i expected. and i was confused, to a certain extent, while we were walking away from the presidents speech. because that is what i felt we were there to cover. >> i documented the crowds turned from protesters to rioters to insurrectionists. i was surprised at the size of the group, we are gravely anger and profanity. for those who didn't understand the violence of that event, i saw it and documented and experienced it. i heard incredibly aggressive chanting, and i subsequently share that footage with the authorities. >> we saw new and at times disturbing images of that violent insurrection. that's crowd that breached the capitol with proud boys and oath keepers among women searched for nancy pelosi. they chanted hang mike pence. meanwhile, vice president would

liu left to call for the national guard. and republican lawmakers major peanut calls to the white house. they took 187 minutes before trump finally tweeted a video telling those rioters that he loved them, and to go home. which raises another important question. what exactly was trump doing in those 187 minutes? according to a hearing thursday, he was not doing anything to protect and save his vice president. >> aware of the rioters chants to hang mike pence, the president responded with this sentiment. quote, maybe our supporters have the right idea. mike pence, quote, deserves it. >> let's bring back our panel. danielle moodie, host of the woke a f democracy progress. lincoln project advisor there erik seth meyer. she should be back in just a. moments lost reconnection.

-- before trump began speaking at the january 6th rally, members of the proud boys were already making their way to the capital. hundreds of them, he said. what does that tell you about the level of coordination and the intention of these organizations on that day? >> that was a new factor to me as well. it was not one i had appreciated before. and it does suggest, does not prove it does suggest, that there was concerted activity. conspiracy, planning. between the trump campaign and these two groups, the proud boys and the oath keepers. the other new factory was a. numbers 100 and 50 to 200. we know from those indictments there were a handful of proud boys and oath keepers who participated in these stacks breached the capitol. i had no idea they were talking about those kinds of numbers. 200 and 50 to 300 of them. one possibility is, because he cannot go to the speech.

it was until about noon that donald trump, said we're gonna march to the capital. the crowd went there, in from earlier appearances got a little unruly and out of hand. it entered the capital because of their rage. with this could be against the putin for you to remember the people breached the capitol and knock down the doors so that the mob could follow them in. we can increase the likelihood that vote could be strong. i still want to hear more direct evidence that this was a plan, and it could be that this evidence was established. at least two members of this militia group have pleaded guilty and are cooperating including a man named joshua james. who was a videoed with roger stone on january 5th and january 6th. so if there was a plan between the willard hotel roll room of the trump campaign and these militia groups, that would be a really explicit fact. so i think we have right now is a potential inference and a suggestion. which would cause me to want to look a little further to find out whether this was a plan. ok a little fu rther to fin meanwhile, back at the white

house. they were busy with -- 87 minutes of course, according to his chief of staff. they said this was testimony from the joint chief, mark milley. watch. >> they said, we have to kill the narrative that the vice president is making all the decisions. we need to establish the narrative that the president is still in charge and that things are steady, stable. that kind of thing i immediately interpreted that as politics politics politics red flag for me personally, no action but i remember it distinctly a mob descends on the capitol and it is all politics politics politics coming from the white house. make sure trump still looks like he is in charge and

meanwhile it was mike pence telling general milley to stand in the guard and all of the politicians on capitol hill bracing for the attack where is the accountability for that lack of action to the white house for those 87 days? >> here's the thing aim in, donald trump was in charge he just was in charge of the white house. he was in charge of this insurrection, so when we're looking at that 187 minutes we have to remember when we were introduced to the proud boys and oath keepers. where was that that was during the campaign when donald trump. onstage with then candidate joe biden said to them, stand back and stand by. so these are things that we know to be true. no i am not a lawyer. but i have to tell you that in this department of justice. it does not act on the information that we have on hand. the democracy is done you don't move on from this for 187

minutes while the mob was chanting to hang the vice president of the united states. while members of congress are being evacuated. donald trump was doing something, but he wasn't doing it for the american people. i believe that he was acting in coordination with the people that he told to stand back and stand by. we have got to continue to connect these dots. this is not an accident. this was not something that just happened, happened in the air, or passionate and these people got caught up. it was a coordinated act, a coordinated group that had donald trump, their leader, in charge of what it was they were doing. >> so tara, one of the things that i was talking to barbara about was the role that the oath keepers play in this and the evidence that emerged yesterday in the possibility that there was coordination beforehand. but it raises the question into whether there was a link between the proud boys and the oath keepers, and somebody at the white house. and that is where, the focus of roger stone comes in. because he is a close trump

ally. he was not mentioned yesterday, but what questions remain for you about his involvement in the attempt to overturn the election? where does he said in the nexus that links wet the proud boys and oath keepers were doing on the day, or the weeks before the insurrection. and the white house on that day. and in the weeks before the insurrection? >> he's right in the middle of all of it. and, i think that there has to be a department of justice investigation looking into this. they have already charged a bunch of them with seditious conspiracy. they had to have dots connected for all of that. i think there is more to come. a link to find out about that. i also know that there were others who had proud boys at their personal security. besides roger stone. there were others, i saw these other rallies as well. allies of the white house. then you also had that war room at the willard. who was present there? giuliani was there.

you had steve bannon. some of these other cast of characters. that all have direct links to the white house. and i just want to say something else about this. the intelligence community, the fbi, dhs, came out earlier this week. and talked about this rise in white supremacist, an ex white wing extremism, and usually we have this as a recruitment tool. there are recruitment tools like the proud boys, oath keepers, others. that it resembles isis. and how savvy they were in using social media as a recruitment tool. we just saw the tip of the iceberg during this hearing yesterday. the communication between these groups, on telegram, and other social media platforms. how they plotted and plan here. they learning this from terrorist organizations and they are adapting. this is something the american people need to be fully made aware of. may tundra stand. the seriousness of what these people were doing. so i think that is something that we are going to hear more

and i mean, what it is really like, to live in an alternate universe, what the right-wing media coverage of thursday night's hearings, that is perhaps a great place to start. take an opening statement from congresswoman liz cheney, where she outlined some of what happened in the immediate aftermath of the january six insurrection, leading up to the presidential transition on january 20th. including communications between fox news correspondents and white house staff. >> most emblematic of those days is this exchange of texas between sean hannity and former president trump's press secretary kayleigh mcenany. sean hannity wrote, in part, he now, no more crazy people. no more stolen elections to

talk. yes, impeachment and 25th amendment or real. many people will quit. ms. mcenany responded in part, love that. that is the playbook. >> all right. so, behind the scenes, fox news personalities like sean hannity and press secretary kayleigh mcenany were in agreement that it only did to stop. that, quote, crazy people were peddling this stolen election top. but during hearings on thursday you did not hear anything about that on fox's coverage. in fact, it's as if those tax exchanges never even happened. >> we have all three major broadcast networks, fake news seeing, and missed tmz, all happily broadcasting legalized, most boring, absolutely nothing new multi our democratic fund-raiser masquerading as a january 6th hearing. make no mistake. tonight's so-called hearing is not in good faith.

like cast to tell, the eyelid chief of staff, talking about the security response that day in his communications with trump's chief of staff mark meadows. republican congresswoman elise stefanik, who replace cheney's republican leadership after 20 dared to criticize trump after the insurrection, she has called the hearings a sham. it has called the illegitimate january six committee of the greatest destruction on earth. if you tuned into newsmax, which actually did place some of the hearing on the screen. as to why there was no primetime hearing on president biden and inflation! anything but the insurrection itself. if you are watching the one america news network during the hearing, instead of seeing the hearing, you would see this guy. scott perry. the republican congressman who refused to testify in his role in attempting to overturn the 2020 election results. he called it all the circus.

look, the massive right-wing ecosystem rejected the whole thing. we get it. a separate reality was manufactured in a ten month long investigation with thousands of documents, witnesses and videos backing it all up. that was effectively ignored. this nation is facing a profound democratic crisis. and if one we are not even on the same page, what happens is there, we can't get that if it with our democracy intact. joining me now is angela -- present of -- leaders for america. they've been monitoring the right wing coverage of these hearings. good to have you. anything about the way these numbers cover these hearings surprise you at all? >> now. it is exactly their playbook. which is either to distract entirely, to hide. as you pointed out, they played the hearing without sound.

the crazies and the right-wing party in this country. >> no. there is always going to be extremist operations. there was always going to be fringes. so certainly we could find some consensus even with the fringes. but there is no way to ever get past this. or even just sustain any kind of civil society our democracy as we understand it, when you have a network like fox news giving its role and its prominence and its place in the information landscape. operating in the way that it does. because even after january 6th, there is a brief moment where we did have consensus. even after the election was cause, fox news except the results for a whole full three days, until they turned on a dime and spent 774 segments over the last two weeks in november 2020 undermining the election and helping literally build a scaffolding for the attack on the capitol on january six.

they can actually shift a very large amount of the consensus amongst the population. they have not scored it is if they are news network for quite some time. when i fact they are just a partisan outlook. and in this case more conspiratorial by the day. we will never find consensus. i think that is the one big takeaway for me in all of this. even for something as significant as this, which feels so clear cause, whatever the outcome is, whatever we do about it, the idea that we can't even agree anymore that there was an attack on the capitol on january 6th, i mean, fox was hosting people calling a false flag. they were actually saying the officers were testifying were crisis actors. i mean, this was what was happening on fox news. and this is a network that has the legitimacy of journalism. they are part of the press pool. they are treated like all of the networks are. i'm not saying to abolish fox, i get it, we live in a free society, but fox is treating it with the same regard as new york times is when it comes to all of the major
