trump's big lie in tomorrow's hearing. one of the witnesses on the docket was a former fox news staffer, potentially putting the right-wing network in the spotlight. plus, brand new reporting on what mike pence knew, and to plan. with my panel of experts. later, the victims of disgraced lawyer larry nassar suing the fbi for $1 million. saying that they bought investigation and could have shaved saved more young women. i will talk to -- survive about why this lawsuit is so important. all of that and more is coming up. and a good sunday morning to you. oh, sunday, actually. i am katie fang. we begin with our breaking news in idaho where police arrested more than 30 people of allegedly affiliated with the hate group patriot fund. just outside of a pride event.

according to police, they were there to cause trouble. msnbc correspondent maggie vesta joins me live with the latest. maggie, what can you tell us about what happened yesterday? >> yes, katie. you are exactly right when you say they were there to cause trouble. that is according to police and idaho who were charged 31 people with conspiracy to commit riots. this after images were making the rounds on social media. there they. are they, polled they say, dozens of people out of the back of a u-haul. packed into that u-haul. just blocks from a local pride festival. police say they were wearing shin guards, shields, face masks, and shirts that said things like reclaim america. police also say that they were affiliated with the hates group patriot front. here is part of what's the chief of police in idaho had to say about this group yesterday. take a listen. >> these individuals come from

all over. we have not booked all 31 individuals. at this point we have individuals from texas, idaho, south dakota, arkansas, white awning, oregon, in virginia. the bookie process is not complete yet. >> police reportedly in idaho. they are working with the fbi on this case again, pulling over the u-haul trapped with over 30 people. now being charged with conspiracy to commit rise. they say they were, again, pulled over near cortland idaho's pride festival. june is pride month. so there are festivals like that playing out across the country. police crediting a concerned citizen who called 9-1-1, telling police they have seen these people dressed, again, with that riot gear and face masks. saying they look like a small army. and that is why police say they were able to stop this before

it started. katie? >> all thanks to maggie vasquez. now we are going to move on to our nation's capital. the january six committee is preparing to kick off a second hearing on the capitol attacks tomorrow morning. the hearing is expected to focus on the spread of disinformation, and donald trump's embrace of the big lie. despite him being told repeatedly that the election was not stolen. for more on what we can expect tomorrow, we are gonna turn to nbc news correspondent allie raffa, who is live on capitol hill. >> good morning, katie. the committee second hearing of at least six will begin at 10 am tomorrow, when we expect the panel to present more compelling testimony to lay out this case into what we call a, quote, seven point plan by the former president to overturn the results of the 2020 election, despite being told repeatedly that they had lost. we heard some of that prerecorded testimony from former attorney general bill barr, as well as the daughter ivanka trump. by saying that the justice

department look into this and did not find any evidence of fraud that would've changed the results of the election. and ivanka saying that they accepted bars conclusion. the committee, tomorrow, we expect, will examine how and why the former president tonight except his former attorney general's conclusion. and how that directly led to the chaos at the capitol on january 6th former fox news political editor chris dyer wealth is expected to testify. and really shed light on why the media amplified that big lie. trump's repeated false claims that fraud -- he, as you remember, came under fire with a network's top brass. the former president himself. trump's supporters. after he defended the networks just decision to be first network to call -- for arizona in the 2020 election. that was really the first sign that trump not win his reelection. so we expect to hear that

tomorrow as well. as a two more committee hearings scheduled for later in the week on wednesday and thursday, where we expect to hear from former justice department as well as lighthouse officials -- white house officials. >> thanks to allie raffa, live on capitol hill. let us be clear. there is a common thread between those two stories that we just presented to you. a massive, violent insurrection at our nation's capital, and more than a year later, cases of extremism like what happened in idaho yesterday. those are on the rise. that is why my next guest is so important to join in on this conversation. christopher goldsmith is an army veteran and extremism analysts. as well as the ceo of barbarious. he has in the past infiltrated patriot funds. the very group that police have named unidentified in yesterday's idaho incident. christopher, thank you so much for being with us. what can you tell us, based upon your actual experience, through the infiltration of this group, patriots fund.

with a stand for? >> thank you so much for framing the story in this way, katie. because we have been trying to get out for years. i was first introduced to pay for it funded 2020 by a friend friend of mine who i served within the army. who infiltrated the organization. and he wanted my help to take it down. since getting to know patriot front from the inside, and having access to their rocket check, which is like an open source version of a slack, i got to learn over the course of a few months of watching their internal communications, how they brainwash one another. how they do their recruiting in plan there are events, and the true ideology they have wrapped in red flags. patriot front was born at the unite the right neo-conservative meeting in --

car came crashing into a group of counter protesters. this young guy at the time, he was a teenager, named thomas or. so now living in -- texas, had become the grounds commander. that is what he called himself. of the unite the right rally. he was the one who got the murder -- i feel that day, much like the feels that he is a showing to his members of the patriot front a day. he realized after heather hire was murdered that they need every brand. so they dropped vanguard america called the patriot front really put it from this red white and blue. the goal here for these folks was to basically try to be sympathetic to conservatives. to be sympathetic to the fans of donald trump. now, these folks are an explicitly neo-nazi

organization. when i use the word nazi, i need to be clear. i am not being hyperbolic. and talk about swastikas. roman salute. these people read things like mein kampf. they believe in things like the great placement theory. and they celebrate every day as folks like tucker carlson and fox news take their talking points that used to be on the worst parts of the internet, and put them in front of millions of americans on a nightly basis, to distract them from what happened on january 6th. >> christopher, there is a number that i want to highlight. i'm going to bring it up. now 21 republican state lawmakers were at the january 6th insurrection. do you believe that extremists are seeing this as permission or even encouragement for what they are doing? almost like an explicit okay for them to be able to get together and try to inflict the chaos in the room and even

violence we've seen them do? >> absolutely. all the people think since january six a brew groups like the proud boys just burst and are no longer. and since january six, they realize that the centralized and very conservative structured leadership structure that they had taken was a liability. so they started to disperse nationally. right now, the miami day republican party had been taken over by members of the proud boys. members of an extremist organization are making decisions on the executive committee. that is exactly what happened. and people might find this to be godwin's law, right? first person to say that they are nazis lose as the arguments. but these people believe in a theocratic government. the end of democracy.

and they are doing it by obtaining actual, legitimate political power. we are taking over small parts of the republican party. that is why patriot front wants to idaho. right, now the state of idaho is having an extremist rise because they believe it is a white part of the country. so if we move more racist people there, we can push minorities out. we can terrorize communities like the lgbt community at these private events. and they believed, until they are to hopefully's pulled that u-haul over, that they would be able to get away with it. thankfully, there are concerned citizens who saw these are people getting into the back of this u-haul, and made a call. what is ironic here is that the patriots usually call the cops on themselves, so that they can get an escort when they show up in a city like a d.c.. we saw in both december and

january, as soon as it got out of their trucks, they are were met with police. police surrounded them and kept them away from counter protesters. that is not so they can avoid conflict. that is so they can create the image of them having support from the police. therefore turning the counter protesters, people that they perceive as their enemies, into believing that the police are endorsing these neo-fascist organizations. -- >> i am really hoping that they trained for this is going to get better, not worse. but we are definitely going to have to have you come back to be able to do a deeper dive into what is going on with extremism in the united states. thank you for being here this morning. >> thank you. >> coming up, will the spotlight be on fox news into morris january six hearing? testimony from the former political editor there will

wouldn't have called it. >> that was former fox news political editor, christine wall in 2020 defending the decision to call arizona for now president biden. it was days ahead of other tv news networks. it was correct! a couple of months later, star walt was fired by fox news. the channel denies it was because of the outcome of the election. tomorrow, he will be the star witness at the second hearing of january 6th committee. the committee is expected to focus on how donald trump and his allies promoted the big lie that the election was stolen, despite being told that it was not by his own team. stalwarts testimony comes as the editorial boards of two papers owned by foxes rupert murdoch published blistering op-eds against trump after the first january six hearing. ironically, fox news is the only major news network who refused to air the first

january six hearing. for more weakening here tomorrow we are joined by political correspondent betsy woodruff saw an msnbc political and -- juanita tolliver. juanita i want to start with you. it does appear that the big focus tomorrow will be on the big lie. you know, the idea that there was this joint coordination between trump and media outlets like fox news to push this concept. why do you think this angle is so important to the 16 committee? does it make sense to have this be the focus after we've heard in the first hearing? >> it is a key priority for the hearing because part of the case that they are making or they are trying to make is rather than simply being duped by bad actors surrounding him, trump himself had noon he lost the election but was still telling ally on purpose. they believe that that argument being able to make that case, is really, really, important. steyer wallen and the fox news arizona call, by the way, presented such an important

encapsulation of the trump administration's efforts to contest the election before it was even called. before the result even came in! jared kushner another trump administration officials in the lead up to the election were hoping that on election night when people went to bed it would look like trump was winning, even if he wasn't. he wanted people to go to bed, see lots of red states coming in on that map, see lots of undecided votes with some sort of question in their mind. then, when they woke up, if biden had made a comeback with mail-in ballots came in, day in votes came in, the trump folks wanted to be able to say, look, we were robbed! fox news calling arizona for biden blowtorch that strategy. it took what would've been part of this big swath of red in turned blue. as soon as fox made that call, the trump administration officials and campaign officials started bombarding the news network with phone call saying, what are you doing?

retract this call! they called everyone. up and down within the organization trying to pressure them. trying to twist their arms into rescinding that call. in that interview you shared with star wall was so striking because, i cannot think of another time ever that a media outlet, a journalist has faced criticism from his or her peers for getting something right from trump and his team when they could not control voters they were trying to control the message they were trying to control the narrative in this desperate last if narrative of hanging on power. that is key to the january six committee broader view of why january 6th was such an awful day and why the threats that exist that they still persist. >> juanita, to betsy's point, controlling the narrative following that first hearing report word ox wall street editorial -- the trump bears responsibility ended the president support prompted about the election?

he invited groups he riled up the crowd and urged it to march on the capitol. after violence began he dawdled instead of sending help. juanita, why the divergent takes between murdoch's wall street journal and fox news? steyer waltz has been on record is basically saying fox news it's an arm of the republican party why is it so different in terms of that messaging? >> i doubt that there is a 1 to 1 transfer of fox news viewers to wall street journal real either ship i think that there is a moment for that divergence. they know that wall street journal's audience will accept some part of it, even considered the validity. they are more responsive to facts, they are more responsive to truth. and evidence being laid out especially by this like him 80 who did it masterfully in their thursday night primetime hearing. i think that is why this is happening now. but it sounds like, what it reminds me of is the same type of language that we heard from private conversations that have been recorded about mcconnell, mccarthy, lindsey graham. hours after january 6th, they

all said that trump was responsible. just days later mccarthy went to mar-a-lago to kiss trump's ring. let him be the forebear for the 2022 midterms. we also know that mcconnell fell in line. we know that lindsey graham fell in line behind trump in telling his lies. that is but i think this moment is. it is the moment to hold up that mirror. again, i am not sure how this will translate to fox viewers versus the wall street journal readership. >> betsy, you have some pretty amazing reporting, new and political. saying that the day before, the insurrection the legal team for then vice president pence concluded that if pence were to embrace trump's demand that he single-handedly blocked or delayed the counting of electoral votes pence would be breaking the law. pence's attorney is actually scheduled to testify on thursday before the cy committee. betsy, sounds like a pence and had a different legal team things may have gone differently on january 6th. >> that is right, behind the

scenes legal fight that played out from election day until january 5th was one of the most consequential legal debates that has happened in modern american history. the document, i have it here, that we published at politico just yesterday. folks can read the full thing, it is only three pages. it is the only -- pence's top lawyer jag greater made to the vice president laying out why john eastman's wildlife theory regarding the electoral count act were illegal. the way that greg jacob ultimately subs it up is, look, if pence were to defy the norms -- if he embraced eastman's bizarre, novel theory of the way that january six was supposed to work. pence would find himself on an island. isolated against each legislature, court, against even perhaps the voters of the united states. he would kick off a national

crisis. the other thing that greg jacob says the, reading between the lines almost sounds a little cheeky to me, he points out that even if mike pence had agreed with eastman proposal, even if he had taken the steps that easement had recommended they still would've lost! there were not any state legislatures that we're ready to vote at that moment to override the will of the voters in their states. jacob is basically saying, this is my read of it. again, reading between the lines. not only is eastman's argument unconstitutional. not only is it illegal, it's also pretty stupid. the memo is worth a read. it's really a perfect encapsulation of just how tense and how high stakes that final 24 hours before the electoral college certification became. >> juanita, do you think focusing on trump's role in the promotion of the big lie and his conduct on january six is a smart tactical move by the

01-06 committee. do you think it alienates those who should be tuning in and listening? >> i think it's incredibly smart. honestly, i think it will go back to as early as summer 2020 when trump descended -- claiming that mail-in ballots were in a legal way to vote. when in fact it was about accessibility to voters during a pandemic while keeping them safe all practicing their basic right of voting. i think we will see a lot of footage that shows, trump at these rallies and giving speeches where he is trying to say the election is rigged if he loses remember this is not a new line that he said in 2020 and 2016 even i think that the select committee is using this oven on route to undermine any credibility that trump had when we know all the claims that he had were false. he says he will -- tell this live for years. there is never any evidence to back any of it up. i also appreciate the other memo that political released emphasizing that pence's team,

went line by line -- and showing that there was no evidence of any fraud. i cannot wait to see the justice position of trump speeches and rallies during that same time period when we know that pence and his team were looking at the state by state analysis that show that there was no wrongdoing. i expect the select committee to have great production value behind that the same way that they had production behind him on thursday night. >> but see, juanita tolliver we have three hearings this week. i know all of you will be tuned in like i will. i just have to say before we go, think oscar mike pence's legal team. i never knew i would say that! thank you both for being here this morning, i appreciate it. >> thanks. katie >> do you remember when hordes of conservative voters used to gather for a donald trump's waterways here? these boats are rallying for a different republican leader. yesterday's and mongrel ron desantis flotilla may signal for donald trump and the inevitable gop leadership race, coming up.

battle royal could be brewing between donald trump and florida governor ron desantis as speculation grows about 2024 bid for the white house. you are looking at the first ever desantis flotilla in jacksonville. organizers saying that over 1300 boats registered to honor the governor. remember, flotillas have been a hallmark of pro trump floridians to express their support while he was in office. but are moderate republicans slowly moving on from donald trump and his weighty baggage? in favor of perhaps a more palatable leader? according to the washington post desantis has been quietly building his fundraising networks while gaining national attention for his attacks on president biden and his focus on culture war issues. plus, the second year in a row desantis has been donald trump in a straw poll at a

conservative gathering in colorado. joining me now to read the tea leaves and help me figure this out is a florida state senator jason kidd zou, also a good friend. senator, thank you for being here. you know both trump and desantis. i get it, it's demonstrative. but do you think it signals perhaps a move by floridians to have, i have had enough of donald trump and his drama. i am ready for ron desantis a leaner, meaner, sinner, donald trump? >> i think ron desantis has done a very good job of telegraphing headlines and bullet points and buzzwords and bus races. they are all out of the same playbook, i exclude donald trump. desantis, to -- they are jockeying and distancing themselves and positioning cells between each other. you had on earlier, critical race theory, don't say gay, women's reproductive rights, abortion bills. it's all the same playbook. they are trying to distinguish themselves. desantis is resonating by

saying very little. just on messaging. he looks like the more tame donald trump. >> why? why is desantis resonating so much better than perhaps some other people? mike pence for example? there are rumors that he has been staking his plane, i am not donald trump! but you would think someone like an incumbent vice president would eventually have a better chance than ron desantis. why does ron desantis just so fancifully favored at this point? >> donald trump's greatest tactic or utility as a politician was to enable and empower people not to feel -- to some extent, bad about who they are. perhaps he tapped into that, you know? i'm not that bad of a person! i shouldn't have to be made to do this. how it is marketed in florida as free florida, freedom florida, all that stuff. really it goes back to a very simple tenet which we all

learned in school. justice brandeis is not in the constitution but it's well understood to be a right. it is the idea of being left alone. the droves of people who are moving to florida every day, moving out of places like new york new jersey, connecticut. high state income taxes. it is really the idea being left alone. it's not a new taste of anything. he will continue to talk about lockdowns, mask mandates, those things in florida we are free. but it does come at a great expense. >> what are democrats doing in florida to be able to secure the state again. obama won twice, but then trump one. what are floridian democrats doing to make sure that perhaps this becomes less of, i was gonna say purple but it seems like we are pretty red. >> not enough! shortly, we have three branches. the florida democratic party as a whole, statewide. inside the legislative chamber we have the house and the senate. it is a 40 member senate, we

are trying to secure more seats. everyone is up for reelection this year the florida democrats were gonna be rolling out an agenda that are really not very partisan a deals like things like affordable housing, health care those issues certainly not enough i'll tell you katie candidly with the exception of july 1st and surfside in my district where joe biden came. we haven't seen the president in florida either. >> and that is a problem. the present needs to come to florida to try to secure more of a stronghold, foothold, in florida. >> to show that they are not given up in florida. >> and the interview the people feel in florida, democrats especially, that the administration is just not paying attention enough? what is going on? there >> is definitely a top-down kind of dynamic. and they tell, you can only go so far. you watch some of the elections from the u.s. in the gubernatorial candidates for the democratic party here in florida, and it is over weight with criticism from the other side, as opposed, to okay, you

got my attention. but now what are you offering? we need to much better job of that. other than, just rhonda saint has to. go or marco really has to go. what are we selling? >> quickly before have to let you go i want to switch gears. back in 2020 you proposed the legislation that would make it illegal for children to post pictures with unlawful guns on social media. considering the state of recent horribly tragic mass shootings, are you going to try to reach a venue mall with that legislation? >> every year. i participate in one of the 400 demonstrations yesterday for north carolina's continuing year after year. especially in places like miami, -- county more kids are killed by hand blackmoore communities than any other. if a kid says, i'm going to shoot up the school tomorrow, law enforcement gets to go to the house. but a 15 year old in possession of a loaded firearm staying down the street rocking and loading it, which i putter somebody was, of we cannot do anything about, because right of the law says the officers to be physically there to make

nassar. and i also blame an entire system that enabled and perpetrated his abuse. >> gymnast legend simone biles back in september, reporting to the judiciary committee the horrific abuse that she suffered for years at the hands of disgraced doctor larry nassar. this, week she along with 89 others filed a one billion dollar lawsuit against the fbi for what they say was a botched investigation. the usa gymnastics first reported the abuse back in 2015. but according to a report from the justice department, the fbi did nothing. a second claim against nassar was filed filed in may of 20, 20 but no action was taken. 70 women and girls were

victimized between that first report to the fbi and his ultimate arrest in the fall of 2016. nassar was eventually sentenced to over 100 years for the sexual assault. the fbi watchdogs stated that the fbi mishandled the earlier in file investigation and violated multiple policies. the doj said that they will not charge the agents who made these major missteps. when one of the younger survivors of larry nassar's abuse was marianne miller, a competitive dancer who sought treatment at michigan state university. she was 15 when she testified at the sentencing hearing. >> i have never hated somebody in my life. but i hate towards it was uncontrollable. larry nassar, i hate you. >> now she is one of the woman seeking accountability from the agency that you said was supposed to protect her and others. emma ann joins me now along

with one of the attorneys against nassar's abuse, nick -- i want to say that the fbi has declined to comment on the lawsuit, but, emma ann, you are a plaintiff in this lawsuit. going down this road has to open old ones that you are trying to actively heal. tell us why you want to join in on this lawsuit. >> i wanted to join in. i think it is very important that we hold this institution accountable for the mistakes that they made. they need to know, and everyone else, watching that it is not okay. they need to be held accountable. >> emma ann, how are you doing these days? can you tell us a little bit about how our recovery is going. how you are doing in terms of trying to find a better page in your journey to get better? >> honestly, i think that my healing process is backwards.

covered it up. so you have the highest level law enforcement lying and covering up the documents on these young women. >> mick, the fbi does have three months to respond to the claims that you filed. -- did issue a public apology claiming that the fbi's failures were, quote, inexcusable. based on that admission of liability, how do you think the fbi is going to respond to this lawsuit? >> i would hope that they would respond, i actually hope that the attorney general merrick garland would respond. i am flabbergasted we've not heard anything. these women deserve answers. they have fought for change in culture. they are looking for the truth. all they want is transparency. accountability. and justice. that is what we want in this case. if we want to change as a society, we have to hold the highest level of enforcement accountable for the actions -- or in this case lack of actions.
