5:00 pm
alicia will be back next weekend for american voices. right now it's time for the mehdi hassan. joe hey, julián, i'll see you tomorrow morning on peacock. we'll be previewing the 16 live hearing. we'll have much to discuss. that and >> absolutely, looking forward to a. >> have a great rest of your night. tonight on that mehdi hasan show. -- with democracy itself at stake, are democrats admitting the messaging war, all ask planes keeping democrat congressman -- and a bipartisan group of senators will announce it could be the first consensual gun control package and decades. but is it all talk and no real action, we'll discuss. and how to fight the right wing propaganda machine, also getting advice from former obama congress boy, author dan fiver.
5:01 pm
good evening, i'm mehdi hasan, tomorrow morning the house select committee investigating the january 6th attack on our capitol. will hold its second public hearing, if it's anything at all at the first hearing, it's set to be explosive. tomorrow the panel will zero in on trump's lies, his efforts to spread debunked claims about the 2020 election, witnesses include b.j. pak, former u.s. attorney for the northern district of georgia -- fire him for not backing his election lies. i'll schmidt, the republican city commissioner of philadelphia, that there wasn't fraud in his city. and bill stepien, and trump's 2020 campaign manager, in thursday's hearing and everybody seen video interviews, we learned the former president's inner circle as well where the big lie was just that. alive. attorney general bill barr revealed that he told his boss, allegations of election fraud
5:02 pm
were quote, bs. trump's own daughter of rank agreed with that assessment. putting the committee that she respected barr, accepted what he was saying which prompted her dad to lay later attack even. her the calls were even coming from inside the trump election campaign, former campaign adviser -- will told committee that they saw no evidence of widespread voter fraud. perhaps the most stunning revelation for me was this moment from vice chair liz cheney's opening statement. >> as you will see, representative perry, contacted the white house in the weeks after january six. to seek a presidential pardon. multiple other republican congressman also sought presidential pardons for their role in attempting to overturn the 2020 election. >> let's take a second and really let that sink in. multiple cities of congress asked for then president for a pardon during his last few weeks in office which begs the
5:03 pm
question, why would you even need a part of immediately raising concerns about the election. now, i'm no lawyer but in ohio state law provided -- rule call seeking a pardon of for a crime usually means that they knew their actions workload, at least legally questionable if not fully illegal. we should note, republican congressman scott perry of pennsylvania, voted to overturn the election, even after the insurrection. called the notion that he never sought a pardon quote, an absolute shameless and soulless lie. well congressman, if you really want to set the record straight and clear your name, you can testify under oath about his supposed innocence. oh wait, you already given the chance to do that, congressman perry is one of five house republicans subpoenaed by the committee last month. but instead of going on the record against the so-called lies, perry ignored the subpoena declined to participate in a deposition. the obvious course of action when you allegedly have nothing
5:04 pm
to hide, but seriously, this pardon news is a big deal. and just might have the power to change public opinion, especially concerning the role that sitting republican members of congress play in trump's effort to overturn the election. is it current lawmakers after all. but the truth is, these kind of revelations only breakthrough if democrats take them and run with them. and that's where we come up against a major issue. it's no secret democrats suck at messaging. later this hour, i'll speak with dan fiver, former communications record for barack melbourne as wide as about his party struggles when it comes to messaging. but i should be clear, there few elected cramped apps trying, trying to turn things around on the messaging front. take representative alexandra ocasio-cortez, following cheney's remarks, aoc took to twitter to -- asking far-right gop house member like paul gosar, marc gates, jim jordan, marjorie
5:05 pm
taylor greene if they were some of the and main lawmakers reference during the hearings. she just wanted to know. we don't know how one of them wanted to respond. you are yes, democrats can be that easy. every house democrat should follow aoc's lead. and publicly ask one simple question of their gop counterparts. did you ask for a pardon, did you? but this isn't just about january the 6th, democrats need to toughen up on their messaging across the board, just over a month ago -- the perfect talking points. so for a leak decision, the very ultra conservative court -- 's roe v. wade, and sure there was real anger among democrats in the first few we. as usually, i'll be honest, the media has moved on. as we often. do and, again after a string of horrifying mass shootings are seeing the exact same pattern when it comes to gun control. we just got word today that a group of bipartisan senators announced a framework deal on gun violence on preventing gun

guides, ten republicans have signed on to the framing, meaning a final bill shouldn't get support of those ten republicans, that will bypass the filibuster. but it also means, the barely bipartisan bill that the vast majority of the gop -- and not taking any meaningful action on gun violence. effectively, democrats handed over another possible midterm talking point to the republicans. -- new can't run on gun violence, for that bipartisan deal. so, what is a concern democrat to do when doesn't see really stepping up to the plate in midterms yet. on the night of the uvalde mass shooting, after an 18 year old gunman wielding an air 15 style rifle killed 19 students and two students etymology show, a rifle that won't be banned under the bipartisan. dual -- niceties and enforce congressional politeness. rubin guy a go called out texas senator ten crews and twitter, questioning the republican supposed pro life stance which

coordination that had happens i do think it's a right approach for us to be questioning, why are you even asking for. this unfortunate is a lot of elements in my -- different levels of judicial proceedings. growing up in the south side chicago, when you're asking for forgiveness it usually means you've done a crime. and that's clearly what happened here. i do say in addition to aoc doing aggressive tweets, there was -- -- members who are all taking notes not to and handing it off to other people, that's what we contribute during the whole time and last but i think it's important for democrats, you are never ever gonna get faulted for protecting democracy. no one's ever to be mad at you for saying that you went to overboard in protecting democracy, you went too hard, i think that's the one thing i've seen a lot of democrats really hold back on. they need to get over that, we have an opportunity to really reclaim the idea of patriotism over this party, the current public party that has basically,

5:10 pm
six hearing so far, the judge could've had access to many, many moons ago. we have a recording of donald trump trying to pressure secretary of state saying, i just need you to find 11,000 foreign and six votes, or something around that. that's illegal. what more do you need, you have it on tape, you have it on record. where is our department of justice, hopefully i'm wrong animal to get yelled out by people at 2 am or, slamming the attorney general, i want to be proven wrong. but we're not there yet. at the end of the day, unfortunately, the real kind of the ladies gonna come from the da at fulton county prior to the attorney general united states. it's a very sad statement that's how it's gonna end up. >> yeah, i'm with you. i hope to be proven wrong about doj but so far i haven't been. if i or any of the viewers at home -- in january 2021, to brad raffensperger, we would've seen

the inside of a jail cell by now i'm sure. let's move to the gun legislation framework, announced we're about small bipartisan group of senators, what do you make about that deal that doesn't ban assault rifles, doesn't raise the age for purchasing air at 15 to 21, but does bring a new money for mental health, school security, does have enhanced checks for under 21, there is good but mile proposals, there's a lot lacking from it, how are you concerned certain that the democrats are -- proper majority, so we can pass proper legislation. there's a weak bipartisan dual gives republican an out here? >> well, unfortunately for i take that back, fortunately, we are the responsible party and we're not gonna walk away from doing something that could actually incrementally improve the lives of americans just for a partisan attack point. that's something republicans would. do we can't do that at this
5:12 pm
point. i also think unfortunately, gun issues there ever gonna go away, i think there's gonna be more mass shootings, there's certainly gonna be more crime in our streets of our cities, and even now you see crime increase in the rural areas of this country. this will continue to grow. it does go back to how we end up in the situation, we ended up in this situation because we're stuck with this old acronyms jack rule, that basically discourages compromise. if we didn't have the filibuster, we actually see a very, very bold and compromising, compromise bill when it comes to gun safety legislation. that's where we are right now. so, kudos to -- the best he could. that's a very hard thing, i hope there's good things that come out of. this at the end of the day, we're dealing with the situation because we decided to constrain ourselves, not because of the actual dynamics of the politics, gun reform right now is extremely popular in the country.
5:13 pm
we could be doing a lot more aggressive than we are right now. >> i guess my worry is, the only way to get action on this is public anger, doing a bipartisan duel that the majority of republicans don't support. well, we don't want this issue, let's move on to gas projects. i >> get what you're saying. at the end of the day [inaudible] >> can't walk away from the deal. we're out of time, all throw one quick question out of you. 31 people affiliated with the white nationalist group, patriot front, were arrested in idaho near up lgbtq event, the suspects were booked on can -- reaction to something in 2022? >> well, we need to be very careful this is a very concentrated effort to basically intimidate people, to being who they are, try to intimidate americans, and what's not the republicans trump vote. they're using this anti-lgbtq rhetoric, being afraid of trans people, this qanon white
5:14 pm
opportunity to basically scare a lot of people to vote republican, but to incite this type of violence. you see marco rubio talking about -- taking their kids to drag joe, as you know at, minder on business parents can do what they want with their kids. it's nothing like now we're seeing a rhetoric coming off the right, basically trying to create an environment where it's going to be difficult for our lgbtq people to actually live the lives that they deserve. the rhetoric that is being brought on by the right is going to bring on these types of really violent actions. we should not let the conquerable get off the hook for that. >> we are way over and time. my producer will be mad at me. quick question. when you say to people who say if members of congress should not be calling a member of congress and effing baby killer. >> you have members of congress that are called pedophiles,
5:15 pm
members of congress who called us everything else. also, 19 kids were killed and two teachers. 19 kids. this is not the america than anyone deserves. and for us to have to control our rage and control our rhetoric as of this is normal. it's not normal. we try to normalize it rather than deal with the problem, because we care more about the -- niceties instead of kids lives. >> congressman, you're on my show. your mic up 50. i appreciate righteous anger. thank you for your time. tomorrow, join a soberana 70 see on peacock for day two of the january 6th hearings. the coverage kicks off with me and i am eastern. continues with the morning team at 9:30 followed by the hearing in full stream. january 6th hearing is tomorrow on msnbc at peacock. more on the gun story.

violence better than no deal little? personally, i happen to think this narrow agreement gives the republicans an easy get out on gun violence. are we to pretend they have responsibility to a mass shooting? gas prices? but the founder of moms demand action, shine and what's, tweeted today that this bipartisan framework is a major step in finally getting federal action to address gun violence. shannon watts joins me now. shannon, thanks so much for coming on the show tonight. i get why you've welcomed disagreement as an activist. there wouldn't be an agreement if it wasn't for people like yourself. but i have to ask. i have to cut right to it. would anything in the steele have presented the mass shooting in uvalde? or buffalo? >> that's sort of a strongman argument. this is a historic agreement. we've been waiting for this for 26 years. that is the last time we had any kind of significant movement on gun safety legislation in congress. so, for these senators to come
5:22 pm
together and finally break the logjam around gun safety legislation, it shows that this is not just good policy. it's also good politics. i'm very hopeful that once they start with the language we will get to a place where this is historic. it will be life-saving. you are talking at -- you left out a really important part, also around domestic gun violence where this would address what we call the dating partner loophole and right now, 70 women are shot and killed every single month this in this country by intimate partners. now, as many women are killed by dating partners as they are spouses. this is a loophole we've been trying to close for a decade. that's hugely significant. this is not a political game. the lives of children and people in their communities are not political ponce.
5:23 pm
we have to be open to this compromise, and then if there is an action they'll be consequences for that. shannon, the two are not mutually exclusive. you are right to say that closing these loopholes is a big deal. you are right to say -- i pointed it out in the introduction. it's an impasse. at the same time, i don't think the strongman -- witness have prevented the shooting that has made its get to this point? if our lawmakers can come up with a deal that does not address what happened, 19 kids killed, it's legitimate to ask how good is the steel? >> first of all, it would've made it harder for an 18 year old to a 21-year-old to access again. there would be a framework including provisions where you would reach out to law enforcement and find out, check databases, find out of there's a red flag with this kid, essentially. trying to buy a semi automatic rifle. could that have made a
5:24 pm
difference? for sure. i want to remind you that mass shootings in this country, about 1% of the gun violence, the daily gun violence that kills over 110 americans, and wounds hundreds more, is tearing the fabric of our communities. the framework, as laid out so far, would be significant. i also want to say this isn't where the work ends. we are not just waiting around for this moment to happen in the senate. we are working in city council, school boards, state houses, corporate boardrooms, to make a real change. in the last week we passed legislation in new york that raged the age to buy a long gun. we have legislation that just passed in rhode island that we do the same as well as other things. we've passed gun safety provisions through city councils, five of them in colorado, one and water creek, all in the last week. this is because we have a grassroots army that can finally go to toe with gun lobby in this country. i want to be clear. when i started moms demand

action, about a quarter of all democrats and congress had a -- reading from the nra. today, not one does. that's a political movements work. i understand the incremental changes frustrating, but that is what leads to revolutions. we are well on our way. >> i guess my worry is that the incremental changes, not that it's frustrating, but it allows republicans to not do the major changes. that's my worry, that they will say next time there's a shooting, next time there's a mass shooting, we did it. we did that great deal. we should get a pat on the back. i hope to be proven wrong. as i say -- >> i would argue with you that what they might say is, maybe with this does is get republicans to be on the right side of this issue along with democrats. to see that they can make this kind of vote. that they can pass this kind of legislation, and that americans will be with them, in particular women and suburban moms in this country. the swing voters that they need
