12:00 pm
uvalde, texas we want to bring you this hour. the embattled school police chief saying he's going to resign his city council seat. reaction to that in a moment. millions are hitting the road and hitting the packing -- and continue airline delays and cancellations. also this holiday weekend, concerns at beaches about shark attacks after a terrifying influence in florida. we are also following allegations that people in donald trump's orbit try to influence and intimidate witness cassidy hutchinson -- , as an american, i was disgusted. it was unpatriotic, it was un-american. we were watching the catheter
12:01 pm
building get to faced over ally. hutchinson they're testifying. coming up, i'll talk to alexander vindman, who knows what it is like to face the trump intimidation machine will coming forward to tell the truth anyway. also florida's don't say gay law takes in effect with schools banning rainbows and -- a report on that is ahead. we want to begin this hour once again with that breaking news out of, uvalde texas. and battle school police chief pete arredondo says he will step down from the uvalde city council, according to the uvalde leader news. an official from uvalde said, peter redondo indicated that he intended to resign from the city of uvalde city council. while it is the right thing to do, no one from the city has seen a letter or other documentation of his resignation or spoken with him. and quote.
12:02 pm
let's bring in state senator roland gutierrez who represents uvalde. thank you so much for being with us senator. you've been on the frontlines trying to find out what happened on the day of the shooting. what is your reaction now that arradondo allegedly intends to resign from city council seat? is it enough? have you heard from constituents about if this will bring any relief to them? >> certainly those a number of constituents that are looking for accountability here. this is perhaps part of that accountability. it remains to be seen what the department of public safety is going to do. at the end of the, day they were the ones that first initiated that pete arredondo was the in incident commando. he of course is that he is. not he was a person of a one of six person police force. -- there was law enforcement failure at every level, system failure human error, you name
12:03 pm
it. we can't get to accountability and to the department of public safety, this district attorney and this governor let us know what happened here. we cannot fix the policy problems this policy makers going forward if we don't know what happened in those 48 minutes. >> arredondo is of course on leave as police chief. is that enough? many people are still asking that question. a few weeks back use that is narrative on the shooting was in direct contrast to -- reports. is there any indication that he intentionally misled the public? -- >> i will leave that up to the school superintendent, that i will tell you that again, you have these two conflicting narratives. we've seen a lot of holes with what the department of public safety, my own police troopers are suggesting happened here. i think there is not
12:04 pm
culpability but there is accountability that should be spread across the different law enforcement spectrum that were at the scene. not to lay blame but to figure out how we're gonna solve things in the future. it is unfortunate that this district attorney in this department of public service safety director have chosen to shroud all of the facts that have occurred here under the cloak of a so-called investigation. every mass shooting that we've had in this country over the last several years, we have had answers and days, even as recent as tulsa, oklahoma. we have the answers as to what when wrong and days. here we are, over almost approaching 40 days from this incident, and we still don't know what happened. because dps has chosen to cloister all of the evidence. >> it is one thing to have an investigation that takes a long time to get information out of the public because it is specific and pertinent to the
12:05 pm
investigation. it is a whole different thing for this 12 already happened, for this babies have already had died, and to have this information not be available to their families. you heard from the city statement that they have heard indication that arredondo will resign. but they have not received any documentation yet of his resignation. does this seem strange to you? >> if he has indicated to the newspaper that that would intends to do, i have no reason to doubt the newspaper's credibility. at the end of the day, i know i have spoken to the mayor. the mayor is trying to do what's right for his constituents. but he wants his answers. he's had district attorney's office says you can talk to anybody. you can't even talk here on police officers. he's had dp asked, the department of public safety say he cannot even talk to his own police officers. that is ludicrous. the shooter is dead. this mayor in the county judge of the region should be able to
12:06 pm
talk to their constituents in a right in proper way. this district attorney and the department of public safety have chosen to not tell us the truth. i do not know what they are hiding. i think we all can see that there was a whole lot of error, human error, system failure, communications that simply did not even work in that entire building. we know what happened. we just need to be shown it in the light of day. it is my hope that we can get to that here in the next few weeks. and not have to wait a year or two as the district attorney has suggested. >> for those families, that is simply unacceptable. texas state senator roland gutierrez. we appreciate your time. we appreciate your straight talk. we want to turn out to the january 6th investigation. one thing that could be next out of the committee hearings, criminal referrals to the doj to anyone who try to influence testimony to the community. that according to vice chair liz cheney, who reveal the
12:07 pm
message that -- a source familiar with hutchinson's deposition says that the unnamed person appearing to push pressure on her was white house chief of staff mark meadows. her former boss himself. hollywood, are we learning about any potential criminal -- >> well corey, we know mark meadows himself is a recipient of one of these criminal referrals and he's facing criminal charges perhaps for not replying to the subpoenas from the committee. -- telling us in a statement quote, no one from metals, captive, self-or otherwise, has ever intended to intimidate or shape miss hutchinson's testimony to the committee. regardless of whether or not he has been involved, this reaction testimony is sparking some reaction from this -- >> the text messages or phone calls or whatever kind of
12:08 pm
communication from somebody connected to the former president to somebody who was gonna be offering witness testimony is extremely troubling. i know as a lawyer the only thing, number one, you would interfere interfere with somebody testifying with possible adverse consequences to you. but number two, the only thing if you were ever cutoff in somebody would be to just tell the truth. that's all you gotta do. tell the truth. you don't say do the right thing. he'll be reading depositions. he'll be transcripts. very strange. very intimidating. >> so the big question now is really how does this committee handle this? how do they move forward? we've heard some committee members say this is witness tampering. this is a form of obstructing justice. we are looking into how or whether the committee changes how they're laying out their case to justice department officials. we know they set so because they're watching these hearings. we are also looking into whether these messages have impacted the testimonies of
12:09 pm
witnesses that they have already spoken with, perhaps there are more messages that committee members don't know about, preventing witnesses that the committee members still want to speak with from feeling comfortable in doing so. this is definitely something they're looking into during this calm and quiet period here on capitol hill. that they're really busy looking into back in their districts before this next set of hearings kick off the second week of july. >> ali, thank you. coming up all be speaking with someone who has firsthand experience of the intimidation tactics from former president trump that his inner circle. alexander vindman, former european affairs director for the security council. and wnba star brittney griner now shifts to the courtroom. the american basketball star stratus is underway in russia and drug charges. griner could be looking at a ten-year prison sentence. oh -- >> cory, we don't see britney
12:10 pm
griner often, but we did see her yesterday as she was walking into court. she had handcuffs on. keep in mind, cameras are not allowed inside the courtroom. only two journalists are allowed inside. but what we know is that she was accompanied by members of the u.s. embassy. we know that inside the courtroom, which took place for about two and a half hours on friday, she was read her charges against her, she acknowledge those charges. we understand that she did not enter a plea. that but that there were two witnesses who testified against her yesterday. these are officials from the airport. you remember it was february 17th that when britney griner was at the airport. that is when russian officials say they found cartridges containing hashish oil, these are vape cartridges they say. ever since then, she has been detained. we have been talking with experts around knowledge around russian law and they say this is a sham. this is a political sham. this is a show. the likelihood is that she will
12:11 pm
be found guilty, and sentenced to the maximum of ten years in prison. which is why what is happening at the highest level of our government is so important. what is happening behind the scenes at the state department is critical to to try to secure her release. we have been hearing from cheryl griner, britney griner's, wife is that she is losing trust in the u.s. government. she believes they are not working as hard as they could be to secure her wife lou released. with president biden.eet she's also saying if a president swap is needed, to secure her whites release, that is what she wants to see happens as far as these and -- so they tell us she is doing as well as can be expected. she is expected to be back in court when the trial resumes next thursday on july 7th. >> thank you. -- this weekend 13 million people
12:12 pm
are expected to fly, and another -- million are expected to travel by car according to -- thousands of flights have been canceled due to severe weather and like in airline staffing issues, even if you make your, flight there's a good chance there will be delays. -- drivers are facing the most travel costs for the 4th of july weekend in history. joining me now from reagan national airport in washington, d.c., is gary rumba. tell us about these airlines. why they are struggling to handle the holiday surge when they know these holidays are coming up? when can travelers expect to get to something normal? >> there's a shortage of pilots and whether that is calling the messy situation airports across the country this weekend. yesterday we saw 2.5 million people watched two tsa checkpoints across the country. that's the most and busiest day of air travel since before the
12:13 pm
pandemic began. people are clearly getting out and enjoying themselves this weekend. but the delays and cancellations are coming along with them. we saw 7000 delays across the country. 600 cancellations. today we are seeing numbers that are likely going to match that. so far today, about half an hour ago, we have seen 2800 delays, 600 cancellations. unfortunately, if you're trying to avoid the airport and drive this weekend, it's not a whole lot easier. on the roads. because those high guise prices. this is the weekend that we have never seen gas prices so high on a fourth of july weekend. there is some compassion out there. there's a little bit of good news. here's what one woman had to say. >> it's tough. i don't want to false anybody. i think it's probably a number of things are going on right now. i think we all have to look at the working conditions and what the volume of people that are trying to travel, a lot of people have been sick. ferron and all fairness, who we
12:14 pm
just have to relax. >> oh so where is this all going to get better? when is it gonna get back to normal? that's the big question that everybody is asking. delta, united, american all say they are trying and working on it. yesterday they reset their questions to align more with pilot schedules and with the increased passenger load. the tsa administrator said yesterday things may not get back to normal until labor day. >> i was just thinking, let's get back to the story on labor day and let's see where we're at. because it seems like we report on this every holiday with the scratch happening. thank you so much gary. still ahead this hour, it is not just travel creating concerns for the 4th of july weekend, we will give you the latest on the updates on the extreme weather that gary mentioned. and a warning about sharks. plus nbc news investigates state funded crisis pregnancy centers now facing backlash due to misinformation.
12:15 pm
-- but first, the repercussions of florida's don't say gay law are already taking effect, well as some teachers were told to hide their photos of their same-sex spouses. told to hid told to hid their photos of thei spouses. it's easier to do more innovative things. [whistling]

plan with the provision to alert parents of a student who is quote, open about the gender identity, isn't their child's physical education class, or with them on an overnight school trip. parents in that school district faith voicing that fear is that that policy could and in outing children let's bring in emily -- the political editor for the tampa bay times. emily, thank you.
12:20 pm
welcome. what more are you hearing about these restrictions that similar coming very quickly for the lgbtq community? >> yeah, so it is very early like you said. the bill just went into effect officially yesterday. and so we are still sort of seeing early reports, but i've also seen reports of uproar over a district employee, some of the florida panhandle, including her pronouns and in her email signature. teachers being asked to remove flags pride flags, like he said. and being asked to avoid mentioning their partners. and so it is all very early. there is a federal lawsuit in federal court now over this bill. and so, you know, we are kind awaiting this you have is next. >> so you heard the teacher there, off the top from longtime brier county teacher who is openly gay, and has mentioned that potential of this encroaching on their civil rights. that is the first thing that i think of when hearing about some of these restrictions. is there any talk of that,
12:21 pm
could this lead into that very scary territory for that community. >> will the federal lawsuit is a lodging discrimination on the state of florida. so that's a legal question they'll be decided in the courts but, one thing that opponents of the bill warned very early on was at the language in the bill with some of vague and, more than that, there's been so much confusion seeing messaging surrounding the bill. sort of fun being one. the bill is amended at first it would've prohibited school staff from encouraging classroom discussion about sexual orientation and gender identity. it was later amended so that it is only classroom instruction, and not just discussion. and so, it's sort of what constitutes instruction. it is huge or mentions their spouse, is that instruction? i think that governor desantis and the proponents of the bill have long argued that the bill
12:22 pm
was being sort of blown out of proportion of people need to stick to that text. but i think we are seeing here is the impact of sort of that vague language, and you know like i said, very early on there were concerns that there would be sort of a chilling effect with districts trying to be extra cautious to make sure they weren't running afoul of the law. and i think that is what we are seeing sort of start to take place. and >> yet he would have institutions they violate the policy? >> that is a great question. what's interesting is parents are actually empowered in the bill to bring complaints if they believe their child's teacher that's violating the law. the parents go to the school district, the parents can also file a lawsuit sort of as the enforcement mechanism here. and so, the exact penalties of that aren't super clear, that is sort of how they are envisioning this lobbying forced.
12:23 pm
>> so we know the state education department is expected to release more information with the parameters of the standards later this summer. governor desantis saying this, back in april,. governor, you did the bill about k and pre-k 33, why just over three? that's without a. no >> law does, it says anything about that has got to be developmentally an age appropriate. so it a florida department of education will be putting some meat on the bones of that. >> would you be. -- >> okay, the last part of what he had to say, there want more to be coming down the pipe from your understanding of reporting on that? >> so, as he mentioned, the bill explicitly prohibits classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in grades k through three. so that part has taken effect as of yesterday. but it also prohibits a type of classroom instruction in a way that is not age-appropriate for older grades, as well. so the department of education is working on the framework asked you what it would define as age-appropriate for those older grades.
12:24 pm
and so we are expecting to see specific language come down from the state on that. >> and who makes this issue in the new makes the decision that somebody spouse being, a photo on their desk, with anything to do with curriculum within the classroom? >> all, right just things simply musing on this and we mahoney we appreciate your reporting on this. thank you. >> also from florida, miami pediatrician has been kicks off a seat health board over comments about covid vaccine policy. dr. lisa has been a visible advocate for vaccine access for younger kids. she was removed from the state appointed florida healthy kids aboard this week after criticizing floyd's decision to delay access to covid vaccines for children under five. an email from the office of the florida chief financial officer, informing of the decision, said she was booted from making quote, some very political statements that do not reflect cfo's point of view. and quote. well up next, as more witnesses testify in front of the generous its committee, the more we are hearing about the
12:25 pm
intimidating messages sent to them from trump allies. retired lieutenant governor alexandra -- was a key witness in the impeachment hearings, the first, months joins me next with his own experience, including going after zone brother.

hi. we're zerowater. and we believe everyone deserves the purest tasting water. that's why we strive for zero. you see, to some it means nothing. but to us, it means everything. here, take a look. this meter showing triple zeros means our five-stage filter did its job, and that virtually
12:29 pm
all dissolved solids or tds have been removed. and all that's left is the purest tasting water. let's compare. a two-stage brita filter stops here. but our five-stage filter doesn't quit. new details unfolding now zerowater. we strive for zero. doesn't like witnesses, and this witness messages revealed by january six committee chair liz cheney this. week and central witness champ tampering, if you have to the setting tempted testimony by kathy hutchison. former aide to mark matthews. listen here. >> well our committee has seen many witnesses, including many republicans, testify fully in forthrightly, this is not been true of every witness. and we have received every evidence of one particular practice that raises significant concern. our committee commonly asked
12:30 pm
witnesses, connected to mr. trump's administration are campaign, whether they have been contacted by any of their former colleagues or anyone else who attempted to influence or impact their testimony. without identifying any of the individuals involved, let me show you a couple of samples of answers we received to this question. first, here is how one witness described phone calls from people interested in that witnesses testimony. >> quote, what they said to me is as long as i continue to be a team player, they know i am on the right team, i'm doing the right thing, i am protecting my need to protect, you know, our good tuesday in good graces in trump world. and they have reminded me a couple of times that trump does read transcripts and just to keep that in mind as i proceed through my depositions and
12:31 pm
interviews with the committee. here's another sample in a different context. this is a call received by one of our witnesses. quote, a person let me know, you have your deposition tomorrow. he wants me to let you know he's thinking about you. he knows you are loyal, and you are going to do the right thing when you go in for your deposition. i think most americans know that attempting to influence witnesses to testify untruthfully presents very serious concerns. we will be discussing these issues as a committee, carefully considering our next steps. she did not name them, but we now know that one of those messages was said to cassidy hutchinson urging her to quote do the right thing. and the individual reference as a person, is in fact meadows himself. meadows spokesperson denies he tried to intimidate her, denies
12:32 pm
that that message was sent on his behalf. joining me now is the former director of the european affairs national security council retired colonel alexander vindman. i first want to address your own first hand knowledge of trump world texas to intimidate. you have extensive experience in that world. you filed a civil lawsuit including donald trump jr., rudy giuliani, and others engaged in -- which you give of the woods -- >> unfortunately, this is like some bad mafia movie. these are real life characters that are in leadership positions. in my, case i didn't have a vast amount of experience in the trump administration. i was the professional staff are coming out of the department of defense. i did not have the long-standing ties with the
12:33 pm
this is a different interpretation. the transcript tells the story pretty clearly. it was maybe slightly more sophisticated because they were more professional staff, but mark meadows, the giuliani's out there, trump himself, are pretty have handed. there is something closer out of a movie or a comic book. and this is the way they operate. >> [inaudible] >> [inaudible]
12:34 pm
immediately after telling my brother the most glowing performance review, they turn around and try to give him a terrible performance review to milk harm's military career. -- the department of defense investigated and determined that it was a result of retaliation. this is the way they operate. it wasn't just against me. it was against my brother, against my family, anyway that they could pressure a witness to bend to their corrupt practices. we will see more of this now, god forbid there was never a second trump administration, for any kind of trump-like figure emerges after 2024. we're gonna see even more blatantly, nobody will be safe. anybody runs foul of the administration. they won't be a rule of law, it
12:35 pm
will be rule by law. -- that's why i'm so adamant about ensuring that we don't have another trump or trump-like figure rise to power. that would undo our democracy. >> lieutenant colonel, do you think you speaking out and hutchinson speaking out, giving testimony, could help inspire others to continue to come forward and not be intimidated by the trump machine? you tweeted out on tuesday that cassidy hutchinson has more guts than mark meadows and the rest of trump's henchmen combine. do you think people like pat cipollone will come forward and tell the truth? >> the problem with some of these figures that they were both intimidated and they still see some sort of way to keep in good graces with the far-right republicans. i don't know if pat would be one of those folks to step forward, but there are plenty of public servants that have stepped forward. everyone that has testified in the january 6th hearings has been a republican figure.
12:36 pm
i think it is going to inspire a courageous act by custody, a 25-year-old woman with her entire future in front of her, should allow some older, more established white men to stand up and shoulder with fortitude. i hope they follow her example. >> in april, you argue that the january 6th insurrection was a signal to russian president putin to begin building up its forces on the ukrainian border. what do you make of what has happened since? >> to me it's absolutely clear that putin saw an opportunity in trump and trumpism. he saw an opportunity in trump that was like-minded in a republican party that was going to support putin, as opposed to the democratic the elected president of ukraine zelenskyy, any acted on that basis. of course putin was disastrously mistaken about who the american people were.
12:37 pm
they rejected putin and putin -ism. you had the republican party attempting to dig itself out of that hole. but more importantly, it underestimated the ukrainian people and he continues to get punished for it. this past week there have been major developments on the geopolitical front. finland and sweden joining nato is a huge boon to the alliance. these are powerful members that will be great security providers. regards to the war itself, thank island, russia being forced to vacate snake island because of the weapons that are being provided by the u.s. on the west, are having an impact. they are striking deep targets. they are striking ammunition depots. it will be an increasingly costly campaign for putin moving forward as these weapons come online. it is not doom and gloom. we are seeing some really terrible losses on the ukrainian side. multiples of that on the russian side. the russians are gonna break sooner than the ukrainians are.
12:38 pm
>> i was gonna ask you what your prediction was, and you have a right there. retired colonel alexander vindman. thank you for your time. prince william and his brother harry on near their late mother yesterday on what would've been diana's 61st birthday. -- it is an accolade given to young people for the social or humanitarian work. prince william writing quote you truly are the personification of my mother's legacy and i know she would be so proud of you wall and quote. prince harry releasing this video message. >> and now as a husband and a parent, my mother's voices even stronger in my life. all of you have kept her voice alive by showing the world how each small action helps. >> coming up and nbc news investigation, the reversal of roe v. wade is putting a new focus on crisis pregnancy centers that will now outnumber
12:39 pm
abortion clinics ex positionally. how helpful is a counseling that provide? >> a female staffer applause replied abortions can cause cancer and infertility. she's then played a video and said they also calls meltable illness. all of that categorically false. illness. all of that categoricall false.
12:40 pm
12:41 pm
12:42 pm
a troubling new report on a state fronted crisis pregnancy center in texas has been
12:43 pm
accused of providing misleading or false information to women in order to discourage them from getting abortions. >> we are heading to a crisis pregnancy center in texas, one of more than 2500 in the country. they say they provide free services and abortion information for pregnant women. but they don't say is that they are often affiliated with groups supporting abortion alternatives. to learn more about what happens inside, we sent to nbc news producers to ask for pregnancy counseling. in the dallas area, a volunteer told our producer they don't offer abortions, banning abortions can cause infertility. when asked about the abortion pill, the volunteers said my job is not to scare you, you'll never get overseeing that baby. she then pointed to a small plastic model saying, can you imagine one of these in your panties? oh my gosh.
12:44 pm
>> oh so as a taxpayer, this is infuriating. a horrible thing for a woman to be told. and medically, totally inaccurate. >> as a nurse, as a mom, you told a shock me with that. it's a lie. and it is shaving. it is grotesque. >> texas state representative donna howard, a democrat, found an unlikely ally in former republican representative sarah dave it's. they are calling for these nonprofits to be regulated. and calling for accountability. -- in texas, they all number abortion clinics 9 to 1. >> when i say alternatives to abortion, what is the first thing that comes to mind,? >> a waste of money. a waste of taxpayer dyers. a lack of accountability and
12:45 pm
actually no metrics that indicate it has anything to do with governing abortions is this a program to make republicans feel good, like they are doing something feel good? >> does it help women? >> no. >> the program will cost texas taxpayers 100 million dollars over the next two years. this is the only program that i am aware of where the legislature basically writes a blank check without knowing they are getting. >> well some of the centers provide for services like diapers, ultrasounds, and that's detesting, none of the texas facilities are licensed medical providers. though some women her report believing that they are. another center are producers visited near the border, a female staffer implied, abortions can cause cancer, and infertility. she then played a ville video saying they also caused mental illness. all of that, categorically false. alternatives to abortion in texas, is also receiving federal tax dollars.
12:46 pm
$45 million over the last 15 years. money intended as temporary help for needy families. >> these are does for people he need these funds, and instead of just going to program that provides things like pamphlets, that provides some classes. would >> you go so far as to say that in some instances they are actually committing fraud? >> yes. >> yeah. >> they point to the misinformation, and a case currently being investigated in which state funds for the program for allegedly used by the president of the center, to buy land for hemp production. >> who is to blame? >> well the legislature. >> yes, but the leadership that we have in the state has pushed and agenda that has made it impossible, to have any real dialogue about what is really going to make a difference in the lives of these women and
12:47 pm
their families. >> cindy emmett fatten, reporting there thank you. after the break, extreme weather and short concerns the solid a weekend how tropical storm colin is threatening the carolinas as authorities are warning beachgoers on both coasts to watch out for sharks, after an attack in florida, and multiple shark sightings near shores. attack in florida, an multiple when you have technology that's easier to control... that can scale across all your clouds... we got that right? yeah, we got that. it's easier to be an innovator. shores so you can do more incredible things. right now tropical storm warnings are in effect among along the carolina coast. heavy rainfall has led to localized areas of flash flooding both north and south carolina couple storm collin first formed about 50 miles off the coast of myrtle beach. it has currently sustained winds about 40 miles an hour. it is expected to head north east up the coastline this weekend forecasters are predicting it will dissipate over the atlantic by monday in the meantime, at least four inches of rain are expected to d.c. area over the holiday weekend. and the weather isn't the only
12:52 pm
thing to watch out for if you are by the shore this summer. several shark encounters have been reported on beaches around our country over the last week. while there have, thankfully, no fatalities. authorities are urging great beachgoers to keep their wits about them out the in the water. nbc's kathy park, reporting on this morning. >> well that possible shock brier here on long island is still under review, and experts say that shark attacks are very rare. but officials here are not taking any chances. they're ramping up the shark patrols as we can to ensure that people say safe in the water. this morning as beachgoers get ready to settle in by the shore this july 1st holiday, a warning to visitors who plan on getting in the water. >> we are asking people to be shark smart. >> in florida, a nine-foot-long shark, like this one, bit addison buffet who is out looking for scallops in five but deepwater. she spoke exclusively to abc news. >> elections something latches on my leg, and i'm like that's not right.
12:53 pm
and then, i look and it's a big old shark. >> a family member pulled a shark away until it finally let go. doctors are now doing everything they can to save addison's right leg. >> that sharp wasn't laying loose, and it kept thrashing around. meanwhile, officials on long island or boo controls by land, air, and see. after probable monitoring attack earlier this. week >> a 40 year old man was swimming. he had a bag, we think. >> from long island to cape cod, sharks are on the move. this week, a in massachusetts state helicopter captured a shartner group of seals, and officials briefly closed a beach after a great white was spotted nearby. more than 20 shark sightings were reported off the coast of massachusetts since late may. the large predators ending up in these waters by following their food source. >> the seal population was lower for a while in that area
12:54 pm
up in cape cod. and it is growing. we also have issues of climate change. and then there's just more people in the water. . >> what are the chances that you will get attacked by a shark >> the chances are very slim. most of the time, if the shark is in the presence of a human, they are going to swim away >> but in a rare shark attack off the california coast last weekend, a swimmer suffered serious injuries from a suspected great white >> you can see they had severe lacerations on his arm and leg. >> these stunning encounters, another reminder of what is lurking beneath the surface. >> if you respect their space, they will respect your space and, we definitely coexist. >> so, if your plans take you to the beach this weekend, a couple things to keep in mind to avoid a possible shark encounter. try to swim in a group rather than being alone. also, avoid getting into the water at night, don, or dusk because that is when sharks are the most active. and also, if you are wearing a lot of jewelry, consider taking
