good afternoon. i'm steven romo live. happy fourth of july to you out there. a lot to get you caught up on, including protests overnight in akron ohio following the death of jaylanalker after new and disturbing body cam footage was released showing police shooting the man more than 60 times as he ran away. also today, questions and frustration from democrats over
9:01 am
the president's response to the supreme court ruling on roe v wade, arguing he's not doing enough to protect abortion rights. and millions of americans have found traveling for the fourth to be less than a happy experience. thousands of flights delayed across the u.s. since saturday and nearly 1100 more today. of course, today is the last day of the holiday travel rush. millions of americans either heading home or getting ready to. it has been a rough ride for many. more than 11,000 flights in and out of the u.s. have been n 1,00 have en cancelled. >> reporter: here things are pretty smooth sailing today. as you can see behind me, i'm at
9:02 am
departures right now here at newark. this is a completely different story when you compare it to friday and through the weekend. right now this morning fewer than ten delays, just a couple of cancellations. across the country this morning, fewer than 1,000 delays. again, very different from the weekend with thousands of delays and hundreds of cancellations each day. i've been speaking with people who for the most part haven't had issues today but did have issues earlier this weekend. spoke to a couple headed to their honeymoon and still haven't been able to get a flighting to their destination. there are a variety of factors reports of one delta flight
9:03 am
offering passengers $10,000 to rebook onto other flights. there's also short staefstaffin issues. we're in a pilot shortage with many pilots during the pandemic being offered retirement packages, leaving and not coming back. today most people are at their destinations right now. it's the holiday. it's july 4th, so we're expecting to see things pick back up later tonight as well as tomorrow. on friday, record numbers of travelers, tsa screening about 2.5 million people. they hadn't seen those numbers since before the pandemic, february 11th of 2020. those numbers have stayed high throughout the weekend, although they've declined every day slightly as people have gotten to where they're spending the holiday. >> so glad to see some relief. it was quite a mess for so many
9:04 am
people this weekend. we appreciate it. now to akron, ohio, where the city has issued a 9:00 p.m. curfew for the downtown area and completely cancelled tonight's fireworks as officials brace for new protests today. so far we've seen a handful of people on the streets spending their fourth of july calling for justice for jaylan walker, the 25-year-old black man who led police on a high speed chase and tried to escape after they pulled him over. police have now released multiple body cam videos of what happened next, eight officers opening fire on walker as he ran, hitting him 60 times and killing him, according to the chief of police. we're going to show you a portion of that video with a warning. it is difficult to watch. [ inaudible ]

>> don't [ bleep ] move! >> don't [ bleep ] move! show me your hands! show me your [ bleep ] hands! [ gunshots ] >> now, we paused the video there, but you can hear all of the gunfire that continued. nbc's kathy park is in akron. there's obviously a lot of outrage over this especially after that video was released. what's the latest? >> reporter: that's right. it is the fourth of july holiday, but it certainly doesn't feel celebratory or festive here in downtown akron. as you mentioned, fireworks have been cancelled for today. a curfew has been issued. i can tell you here in the downtown section, the landscape has quickly shifted ever since
9:06 am
the release of that body cam footage. you'll notice snowplows barricading some roadways. last night there was some unrest with demonstrators. the window of that snowplow was blown out. the mayor of akron did issue a statement because of what happened yesterday with police. it says as night fell and others began to join, the protest became no longer peaceful. there was significant property damage done to downtown akron. small businesses up and down main street have had their windows broken. we will not tolerate the destruction of property or violence. he also stressed that anybody who is out breaking curfew between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. could potentially be looking at a fine or jail time. you mentioned there are demonstrations scheduled throughout the day today. you have a small group in front
9:07 am
of the justice center right behind me. it's been relatively peaceful and quiet for the most part. we know eight officers are on paid administrative leave and the state is handling this investigation. eventually it will be handed over to the attorney general's office for further action. >> what are demonstrators calling for? are they calling for outside agencies to continue the investigation or punishments for the officers? >> reporter: talking to folks on the ground, a lot are just outraged but what they saw yesterday. i think the biggest thing they want to underscore is it was excessive force. they didn't have to have all those officers fire on one individual like that. they're extremely disturbed by that video and they want accountability. they want the officers to be held accountable, whether it be fired. as i mentioned, they're on paid
9:08 am
administrative leave. >> thank you. across the country, the supreme court's reverse flal of roe v wade is still top of mind for many voters, particularly democrats now ten days since that decision. their goal is essentially twofold. first, to protect abortion rights whenever and however possible. and second, to keep the issue front and center as we head into the midterms. i want to bring in lauren leader, cofounder of an organization dedicated to empowering women. and adrian elrod, former senior aide to the biden/harris campaign. i know democrats are hoping the supreme court's decision gets more young people and moderates out to vote in november. but republicans also have reason to think it could motivate socially conservative voters who want to get the court to go even further. could the two sides cancel each other out? >> no, they can't. this is what mystifies me about why republican voters are saying
9:09 am
this. the numbers are on the side of democrats. no matter what poll you look at, between 70 and 80% of people in america regardless of political party want roe codified and the benefits that come with it. that means the numbers are on the side of democrats. sure it's going to rally a very small sector of the republican party base, the hard core base that wants to go further, wants to have even more restrictions on a woman's right to choose. right now the numbers are on the side of democrats. what we have to do going into the midterms is keep this momentum and make it clear that the only recourse with a 6-3 supreme court that leans very heavily in terms of creating an environment for women that is not productive, the only way to fix this is vote in more
9:10 am
democrats at every level. >> lauren, hhs secretary was on "meet the press" yesterday and talked about the administration's response to that ruling. >> we have to heed the word of the supreme court. so we will, but we will continue to find every avenue possible to make sure women have access to the care they need, including abortion care. i think we're continuing to explore everything that's out there. the difficulty is that simply because it's an idea doesn't mean it can go out into practice. >> do you see the solution more coming from this administration, or is it something that's more effectively addressed elsewhere? >> i think it's an all of the above. adrian is right about the numbers. the polls on the attitudes of voters relative to the dobbs ruling in september before roe
9:11 am
was overturned and just last week found there is a massive surge in democratic female voter engagement, especially among younger women. among younger women 18-29 we saw a 26 point increase in the commitment to voting in november. but there's absolutely a case for looking at every conceivable option. i think as we start seeing more threats to basic access to health care, including the potential to limit access to plan b and birth control, drugs that have been approved by the fda, it's going to require a super aggressive response on the part of the administration. when the states overstep their rights, the administration needs to push back hard. what's frustrating to those on the left, it's been a very short time, but i think we need to see some very serious work on the part of the administration to work with the senate to see if
9:12 am
we can get the filibuster overruled for some basic protections, especially protecting the life of the mother and in cases like rape and insist. let republicans try to vote against that. this recent story of the 10-year-old girl who had to cross state lines because she was pregnant from abuse is the kind of story i think is going to start to hit americans in a real way. if we start seeing limitations on things like ibf, you're going to see more crossover and pressure. democrats in the house and senate and white house are going to need to push hard for solutions at every level. >> lauren, part of the problem for democrats is there are a ton of other issues happens all at once, inflation, the economy, gas prices. with all of that going on, how do you keep issues like abortion
9:13 am
front and center? >> i mean, people walk and chew gum at the same time. yes, obviously inflation is an issue, but i'm telling you the data we're seeing is that this is a profoundly galvanizing issue for a specific coalition that have helped democrats win over and over again. it is essential for the roe issue, obviously, for democrats to hold the majority and even to pick up seats in the senate. but it doesn't mean those other issues don't matter. everyone needs to look at that closely over the summer. ultimately this is an existential crisis for those on the left. i think that's why we're seeing the polling data not showing this is galvanizing more republican voters. they had more enthusiasm earlier in the year and we're seeing
9:14 am
that wane now. >> adrian, it's continually shocking how short of an attention span voters seem to have. what do you say about keeping this issue front and center? >> this happened obviously in the summer before the midterms. i do think the momentum will continue. we're just a few months away from voting in a lot of key states. i'm not necessarily worried about that. the key here is the fact that we are getting younger voters motivated and mobilized. we aren't having to do that much work because it's happening right in front of us because women are fed up and frustrating and they are looking at the contract of the court and saying, my gosh, we may have to deal with this for the next
9:15 am
decade. with no end in sight, they know that the only way to protect a woman's right and keep our rights from eroding further is to vote for more democrats so we can codify roe. we just need two more democrats in the senate to make that happen. that we expand our number of senate seats in north carolina, for example. there are a lot of things we can do. i think younger voters are saying they are the only solution to making sure we can change the direction our country is going. >> so many people seem to want those specific details. we are following breaking news. our chicago affiliate reports that police are responding to an incident in the north suburban town of highland park.

welcome back. new indications of what's to come from the january 6th select committee as members of the panel appeared across the sunday shows this weekend. lawmakers are now looking ahead to the next public hearing which will focus on the efforts to assemble that pro-trump mob that attacked the capitol. the panel says it has evidence about who participated, who organized it and who financed it. the committee is discussing potential criminal referrals. >> so the committee will or will not make a criminal referral? >> we'll make a decision as a committee about. >> so it's possible. >> yes. the justice department doesn't have to wait for the committee to make a criminal referral. there could be more than one criminal referral. >> joining me is harry litman. harry, the department doesn't
