4:21 am
he thinks it will help his career. but, you know, the fundamentals are, once he is in jail he sort of disappears. he cannot podcast from jail. and, this audience is very short with their attention span. it is not likely will be waiting for him. and, you know, i think it is like with other members of maga world to get deplatformed. they sort of think they have more power than they do. this world has a very short attention span. my guest is that if he disappears he will sort of disappear. >> and yet, i feel like bannon is one of those things that never really goes away, despite all efforts to do so. joe, we have to talk about josh hawley. how could we not? the missouri senator became the butt of many jokes after the 16 committee showed us this video. this was in realtime, and slow-mo. this is josh hawley fleeing from the insurrectionist just hours after holding up a fist to egg them on. joe, he immediately tried to

you do the exact opposite because what we learned, horrific lee is that after donald trump launched when knew was an armed attack on the capitol, he sat in his private dining room for more than three hours, watching the attack on fox tv. and refusing, refusing to call it off. and refusing to send law enforcement or military reinforcements to the capitol to protect the lives of the people who were under attack by the very attack that donald trump launched. you know that is criminal. that is criminal, it's a criminal failure to act. of course also a criminal act because he launched the attack in the first place. that kind of dereliction of duty at a bit about needs to be taken, needs to be taken seriously. he needs to be held accountable for it. when they are in concluded the january six, hearing hours left feeling like donald trump

secretary general of the united nations, this week, has the globe boiling over. there is one tiny problem. republicans do not seem interested in collective action, or any action at all, for that matter. right now, millions of americans are experiencing the country's deadliest weather phenomenon. temperatures are set to break records this weekend from arizona to new york. in europe, it is literally in flames. intense wildfires are across spain, france, and portugal. it was so hot in the uk this week that a fire broke out along this town, east of london. it took just three days for ice covering greenland to melt enough to cover west virginia and a foot of water. well, that state, joe manchin is from, west virginia, he blocked a major spending bill to protect the climate last week. fine, listen, we can call of joe manchin anytime.
4:44 am
but, i have to point out that not one republican supported president biden's climate plan. instead, they want to prioritize slowing inflation. it is important, don't get me wrong, but the new york times is saying, delay is the gop's new denial. delaying action will not stop us from suffering the consequences of climate change, together. illinois democratic congressman, sean casten, joins me this morning. he's a member of the house select committee on the climate crisis. congressman, thank you so much for being here this morning. this is a really important topic. a lot of people tell themselves, i do not have to deal with it now. it will be something that i will cross on a bridge later. many republicans are actually insisting that solutions like comforting to solar, and wind and read, would actually end up hurting the economy. but you have to say to those particular lawmakers? >> luck, but they are afraid of is actually the economic savings of green energy.
4:45 am
i am not trying to be cute about this. every single time we build a clean energy assets it displaces he 31. because, it is cheaper. if you have a solar panel on your roof you are not as long as it is sunny. then you do not buy power from the coal plant. if you have an electric vehicle in your driveway you do not buy gasoline. but putrefy's, not just the republicans, because i like to say get 52 problems in the senate on the democrats had to, but what petrified the republican and now caucus in the senate is that if we stop subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, we will effectually -- from energy producers to energy consumers. west virginia as a state does not know how to operate in the 21st century without subsidizing coal mines. louisiana has a real problem operating without the subsidies of the oil and gas industry. we subsidize the sectors by 650 billion dollars a year. if we are committed to an

economically viable future, and environmentally viable future, we should take off the brakes and actually find these incentives. but they are doing is working hard to protect their local, stroke we all interests, their donors. we are stealing money from american consumers today and future generations would like to live in a world that is not on fire. >> congressman, ben, for someone like joe manchin, and i hate to keep on bringing him up, but he seems to be the poster child for why there is this conflict. he clearly has interest in coal. and, he is voting, like you say, to support parochial interests that are, perhaps, in his backyard. why is there not more screaming and yelling about the fact that someone like joe manchin is standing in the way of progress on climate change? why is there not more being done to highlight that particular conflict of interest that someone like joe manchin would have? >> like, i think it is a question for the leadership of the senate. why, if we believe as democrats,
4:47 am
and i certainly believe this is an existential crisis, this is a massive opportunity, why are we putting people in positions of leadership who are actively thwarting that opportunity? you know, as i said to some friends this week, i do not claim to know where all the wedge heads are in washington. i just know that no one's democratic leader took mr. manchin out to one. if this stuff matters that cannot be a political issue. her children were not judge us by where you better than republicans. we will judge us by saying to give the co2 down? did you give us two for energy? did you give us clean energy? did you put this in a position where we can deal with the challenges of our generation and not the ones who would guard? that is not just manchin, it is not just schumer. this is the history of the u.s. senate. the u.s. senate voted 95 to nothing to not join the kyoto protocols, nearly 30 years ago. they have had a structural problem for decades. dealing with what is completely

proven science. i think it is a deficiency in the structure of the senate, just the senate have to fix. we have to fix it yesterday. >> congressman, there was some polling by the new york times. it says, only 1% of people, only 1% of people say that climate change is the most important problem facing our country today. how do we encourage the voters, both democratic and republican, to make this a priority? >> the basic answer is leadership. i had a meeting with president biden awhile ago. i said to him, if that which is necessary exceeds that which is politically possible, then we have failed as leaders. you know, condoleezza rice uses great language. our job is to make the impossible seem inevitable. and, i think, we have these deficiencies in the republican party. we can talk about these. i think there is a real problem with people in the democratic
4:49 am
party seeking polling like that and saying, i would rather focus on other things if i'm just going to run on this messaging. whatever that is, that is not leadership. that is follower ship. if you are following the polls. i say this is someone who flew to sleep in 2018 that was republican since 1972. by campaigning on climate. it was not a top issue when i started campaigning. it is now. i think folks understand, once you start taking the time to walk through with them and say, you know, wouldn't you like to pay less for energy? would you like to have a more efficient, insulated home? would you like to save on gasoline? why is it hard for you to do that. people understand, they are smart. we are sitting here, as members of congress, and we have access to all the smartest one world. we have access to all these great briefings. we know that this is urgent. do we then go out and lead the public? if the polling is down 1%, the answer is. now we are not doing good enough job. we need to put people in the leadership group will not only advocate for these things but really understand.
4:50 am
they will get down in the weeds and lead, as we do on other issues. we are, basically, failing on climate. we have had control of the house for the last four years. we've had control of the house in the senate for the last two years. point to the big, when have we had last had a hearing on this? one heavily really last expanded political power on climate? one heavily decided that we would actually do what we campaigned on and not whatever senator manchin will allow us to do? our track record on here is not the best. i think we, and people in positions of leadership, need to start leaving on these issues. >> it sounds like the future of our children should not be held hostage by the idea that it is of -- congressman sean casten, thank you so much for being on this morning to highlight this really critical issue. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> the patriarchy is alive and well in minnesota, my friends. a republican politician there
