security concerns for why she could not confirm or deny whether she or a group of house lawmakers will visit taiwan during this multi day four of asia. military officials say that they are fearful that the trip to taiwan can further escalate tensions between the u.s. and china. we are already seeing things escalate. we saw chinese state media tweet on friday that the government of china has the right to shoes down pelosi's plane if necessary. chinese embassy officials are even calling a house lawmaker i'm pressuring them to get pelosi to call this trip off. despite all of these tensions, we have seen democrats and republicans here on capitol hill unites behind pelosi's trip. they say it shows a message of unity. it shows that you united states cannot be bullied. that is likely where that unity and. as we saw, in a vote last night, , house democrats passed a ban on assault weapons for the first time since 1994.

overwhelmed. close to 300 rescues as of yesterday by boat and by air. of course, we know that the death count here, as you said, just keep soaring from 16 yesterday, 2:23 overnight. the governor saying multiple of the victims are children. also confirming that as they go to search for more people as these missing person counts and reports keep coming in, again, first responders are having a really hard time getting to those who are stranded in these really rural areas. take a listen to part of what he said yesterday. >> everybody out there that is scared, that cannot get in touch with one of their relatives. cell phones are down. so many of these regions, i know how you feel. i could not get in touch with members of my family after the tornadoes. please, continue to hope and pray and we will try to connect as many people as possible. >> the governor is touring the

4:07 am
this new golf series has suffered controversy. since it started last month financed nearly two billion reports so far from saudi arabia's southern wealth fund. some are calling that blood money. the country has a history of human rights abuses and then 2018 fbi concluded that the crown prince had authorized the murder of washington post journalist, jamal khashoggi. this year we join extra scrutiny because of the former president donald trump's westminster golf club, less than 50 miles from ground zero. as we mentioned, 15 of the 9/11 hijackers were from saudi arabia. osama bin laden boarded in the country. saudi nationals helped to fund the terrorist group al-qaeda. donald trump, yesterday, on the course defending his imports involvement saying that no one has gotten to the bottom of 9/11.

family members of victims of that horrible terrorist attacks are coming out against this and protesters with the group, 9/11 justice, are protesting the tournament this weekend. we spoke with them. here is what they had to say. >> how much money does it take to turn your back on your country, and on the american people. according to certain individuals, nicholson, koepka, to sambro, johnson, and trump's, the amount of money is just a few hundred million dollars. >> those pockets are deep, katie, they are spending top dollar to push players from the pga. justin johnson, excuse me, reported more than 100 million dollars for the signing contract. this is such the tournament for 1 million dollars. that is about 1.5 million more than the masters top prize. and additional 5 million could go to slip through the top

three teams. there will be another tournament at a trump golf course later this year. katie? >> thank you to liz in bedminster. coming up later i will speak with the son who lost his father on 9/11. he is outraged by trump's decision to host that tournament. that is a little later in the hour today. now we will move on to the widening january six investigations. as the justice department keeps asking questions the 16 committee is focusing in on trump's cabinet. multiple outlets reporting that steve newton has already been interviewed by the committee. former secretary of state, mike pompeo, is scheduled to meet with the committee in the coming days. nbc news has not independently confirmed those reports. former acting chief of staff, mulvaney, testified to the committee. he said he was asked about the text message he sent to rnc chairwoman, rhoda mcdaniel, in the days after the 2020 election. meanwhile, we have another

4:11 am
reportedly engaging with the 16 committee without even having to be served with a subpoena? >> it tells me that the 16 committee is getting somewhere. they see it, they know it, and they would rather go voluntarily than the subpoena. obviously the committee has the momentum. what's fascinating about what is coming up this week is there is a whole collection of emails and lawyers who i cannot wait to hear from, who were hiding with they were doing from the white house lawyers. a lot of the lawyers involved in the electoral scheme, they are also out there sending emails back and forth in the 16 committee. they are finding out about them in the new york times is reporting about it. it is almost like there were two sets of lawyers working on the whole unless tour scheme. one set saying this is completely illegal. and the other side saying you, let's put a little smiley face and keep going.
4:12 am
it is fascinating how it is finally, finally starting to come out. >> it would not be the first time, cynthia, that there are two friends to something, right? i want you to help us understand the significance of the recent nbc news reporting that the doj did. asking about trump's actions, has it opened a criminal investigation of him yet. what does that mean, exactly? >> it is semantics. that is basically what it is. if the investigation is open, and then witnesses are being called and they are going to grande prairie, whether it is on the rubric of trump's admonition dictation, for purposes of the investigation it is just semantics. if ever they do shift and say, trump is a target of the investigation, that would be a big change. for now, let's have a hallelujah moment. when witnesses are going into
4:13 am
the grand jury. they are moving forward. i do feel sorry for them. it is overwhelming how many investigations they have to be doing at the same time. there is a reasonable concern that they need more people. not only do we have this investigation, but now, as we mentioned in the opening, we have the investigation into the disappearance of all the tax from the fiery and the inspector general. they are hiding them. that is going to be a whole other investigation. it will require more grand prix work and more lawyers. i feel sorry for the attorney general. it is just cascading. >> cynthia, let's talk about the missing text messages. from an investigative standpoint, and an evidentiary standpoint, if you cannot recover those text messages for any reason,. -- should the doj say come over
4:14 am
here, we will do it on our side? >> i'm with you, i think the doj, what they need to highlight for the viewers is, inside the department of homeland security's inspector general office there are two camps. there are the career people and there are the trump people. what we learned from the washington post reporting is, the korean people were trying to get the phones and get the information. faris team said, do not take the phone. >> this to that >> waukesha it looks like we lost in the. and we will make sure we get her back. we might actually have her now. cynthia, are you back? >> i am back, i do not know when you lost me. let me say one more thing that is important for viewers. that is there are obviously two camps within that organization. one of the career people who are trying to get the phones
4:15 am
back, where trading memos, let's get the phones back and get the information, and to fareed's team is saying no, do not take the phone. that clash is perfect for a grand jury investigation. let's find out who is stopping getting the information, and that referee requires them to open up a separate investigation into this missing text evidence. >> i do not know about you cynthia but that fiery guy still being here kind of makes me scratch my head and wonder what you are doing. >> you can't get rid of him. >> that is part of the investigating general law. obviously there is a huge problem as the investigator has to find 20 more lawyers. >> cynthia, thank you for being here this morning. we appreciate your insight and analysis, as always. i'm going to get into hall all of what we talked about with

4:21 am
emerging consensus is forming in political party some girls, including trump's with the rank and file which is tiring of the nonstop series of revelations about trump. in fact, a new york times siena college poll finds that while 75% of primary voters say donald trump was just exercising his right to contest the election, nearly one in five safety threat and american democracy. that same poll shows that nearly half of republicans now want someone other than donald trump for president, in 2024. with florida governor ron desantis posing the biggest threat. of course, before we even get to 2024 voters have to go to the polls this november. many trump endorsed and aligned candidates are on the ballot from coast to coast. joining me now from her insight in the analysis is our congressional voter and msnbc political analyst and democratic pollster fernand amandi. good morning gentlemen. fernand, i will start with you.
4:22 am
as a pollster you are the numbers guy. so, what do you make of the latest. should trump be worried, especially this far out from 2024? >> you know, katie, you have to look at it from three different lenses. from a political as if i am not so sure trump still needs to be that worried. the polls show that at least within the republican primary vote he still has his very strong face. the vast majority of republican voters continue to believe the big lie that the election was stolen and denied donald trump. however, from a legal lens, does trump have reason to be worried? the answer, i think, is yes. it is precisely because of the work these committee hearings have done. katie, you may recall on this program we preview the impact on what these hearings would be before they started. i said, they are going to be the most important hearings in american history. i think they have not only lived up to that billing, i think they have serbia passed
4:23 am
that building. part of the reason is, we are seeing in realtime that evidence is being uncovered as these hearings unfold. that is also acting as resuscitation that you could hold to the justice department investigation. the new york times even reported this week that and michelle donald trump was not the focus of merrick garland's investigation. i think that has changed now, precisely, because of the january 6th hearings. is there legal fallout for trump? absolutely. is there political fallout with his republican base note? that still remains to be seen. >> cell, you go, a potential achilles heel for donald trump. these committee hearings, you have been following them extraordinarily closely. what parts of them have noticed registered with your readers, and followers? one additional revelations would the committee provide in hearings to come? >> the one reoccurring feature that keeps coming up is the
4:24 am
lack of evidence, and missing evidence, in respect to january six. and all sorts of different quarters. we first learned that there was evidence missing back in february when the secretary got the presidential corners and presidential diaries from the national archives. they presented this in one of their final hearing saying look, all of this evidence is somehow gone. there is no record of what trump was doing that day. they used that to make the case that trump failed to do anything, and effectively obstructed the certification on january six. more recently, we also see secret service text messages. the more we look at best the more the committee looks this. there is a pattern of evidence destruction. or evidence retention. this is problematic. the committee has honed in on this as the line of inquiry. the fact that secret service text or missing, the fact that chad wolf and could chevy have talked about this, and their

stuff is missing. and we don't have any of the presidential logs from january six. the committee seized this and we smell a rat. >> as i tweeted, there are no coincidences. try to go? fernand, the rolling stones reporting that trump is obsessing over the fact that fox news is covering him versus 's potential rivals for the gop nomination in 2024. it is top of mind. he is very concerned that he is losing the so-called, fox news primary. when trump smoke before cameras in d.c. this week fox news did not air. it however, the network did show a speech by mike pence for roughly 17 minutes. fernand, how big of a deal with it would be if they turn their back on donald trump? >> it would certainly be a big deal, katie. i think, again, the question remains, donald trump is the head of the republican party. this is donald trump's republican party. so, the sun is him. the party revolves around it. fox news has tried this before.
4:26 am
they have had stages in the past where they have tried to backpedal their coverage of trump. inevitably, it is the fox news viewers who have demanded the coverage be re-tuned itself to trump. so, if that phenomenon happens again where trump can basically say, and declare war or many more, or a temporary war, on fox news, and forces the coverage back, i think it will be all right. until though, however, we see him drop precipitously in these republican presidential standings for 2024, i am not sure trump still has to worry about this. trump has a total name identification. every republican presidential primary voter in america knows who donald trump is. we had their opinions about him. it remains to be seen if fox turned the tide, and goes back to covering trump. or if this blackout causes them to lose out. i still think they will come back to trump and it is all said and done. >> you go, quickly before had to let you guys go. it seems like every day, or
4:27 am
every other day, there is a new revelation about missing tax or record, people, or witnesses. what do you now with your so say about whether or not the timing of this january six investigation is going to be done in terms of wrapping it up in a timely fashion? we know that trump had been flirting with a possible announcement of a 2024 run before the november midterms. do you know anything about what is going on with the further hearings and the timing of the investigation that is happening by the 16 committee? >> i checked in with a couple of my associates and sources. it feels like this investigation could go all the way up until the midterm. it could even bump into the midterms. that is because the investigation is gaining new steam. i think some of them august had members on the committee who are the most busy in the work period for the committee and investigation yet. it is really significant because we have already been up this for 11 months. this might be the busiest month
4:28 am
yet. it is really telling about how the investigation is coming along. the one thing that was made to me clear was that if trump's allies had been stonewalling at the very start of this investigation -- and remember, it took three or four months for them to comply with the subpoenas. you may already be done with the investigation. the bumps into the midterms trump asked himself to blame. >> i think there is more just asked that would be blaming him, if you blame some self. hugo and fernand, thank you guys so much for being here. we appreciate it. a quick programming note. monday, steve kornacki returns to the house and governor races, this mid term season. what each party needs to do to win, and how the midterms could affect the next presidential election. much decision 2022 at 10 pm eastern only on msnbc. coming up, defending his decision to host a saudi funded golf tournament and new jersey.
