this is the katie phang show live from msnbc world headquarters in new york city. we have lots of news to cover a lot of questions to answer. a busy day on capitol hill as the united states senate gets ready to vote on the inflation reduction act. potentially delivering a big win for president biden's domestic agenda. we are live in d.c.. and the far-right conspiracy theorists, alex jones ordered to pay up more than $45 million over his sandy hook lies. what is punishment means for the disinformation epidemic. glenn kirschner is here. plus abortion rights supporters

look for lessons. from the kansas vote as a republican scramble to soften their messaging ahead of the midterms. and later, a popular female politician is quote, not ripe enough to be president. gas was notorious conservative tv personality said that. the right is taking the war on woman to a whole new level and you better believe it, i have some thoughts on that. all of that and more is coming up, so let's get started. we begin this morning on capitol hill. senate democrats are just hours away from starting the lengthy process of passing a signature package aimed at tackling climate change, expanding health care and capping drug prices. and bc, julia jester is on the hill with the details. julia, it's an understatement to say that this is not a long time in the making. can you walk us through what will happen today?

saturday in d.c.? >> good morning katie, that would be an understatement. lawmakers have been working on this bill for over a year and there are a lot of components that have changed and shifted. the part of the bill is the same. take a look at what is in, it tax reform, climate investments, deficit rejection, drug price and reform and health, care subsidies. the bill has change in recent weeks due to opposition from kyrsten sinema, and negotiated some concessions from the majority leader, schumer. what is out an accelerated depreciation component of the corporate tax action. as well as the carried interest loophole that would've raised 14 billion dollars to pay for the bill. however, will not add it was a 1% excise tax on stock buybacks which will raise 74 billion and she also got four billion upshot relief funding added to the bill. so with these additions and

concessions, senator schumer is optimistic that the bill will pass in the coming days. take a listen to what he said about that. >> this is a very, very big deal. including, reducing prescription drug costs, flooding climate change, closing tax loopholes exploited by big corporations and the wealthy and reducing the deficit. i believe we'll have 50 votes to pass this legislation at the end of the day. >> and so and just a few hours, the senate will be over saturday session and which they will kick off a 20 hour vote ramah in which both republican democrats get equal amount of debate time on this bill. senator lindsey graham saying that he will quote make it help for democrats. not make this an easy fight. the bill will be passed at the earliest, tomorrow and possibly monday. but for any of that happens, all eyes are on the senate parliamentarian to rule that

every measure in the bill, aligns with the bird bass. it's related to the budget. katie? >> julia jester, live in d.c. with the latest on the inflation reduction act. we appreciate it. this week's, several election deniers backed by former president donald trump defeating that primary opponents and closely watched gop primaries. in arizona, republicans embracing the big lie and they won primaries for secretary of state, governor and senate. in michigan, gop primary voters chose a candidate for governor who falsely claimed that trump won the 2020 election. and in missouri, republicans nominated a united states senate candidate, who backed a lawsuit seeking to overturn the 2020 election results in four key states that trump lost. these results coming in just before the conservative political action conference, cpac hacked off in texas. conspiracy theorists and election deniers have taken center stage there and it's not

over yet. tonight, former president donald trump will deliver the keynote address. for more on all of this, we turn to nbc news reporter, gary grumble quiz in dallas, texas. >> good morning katie, ever since the rain here, cpac has been a place for conservatives to gather, share ideas and prop incoming republicans to get noticed on a national stage. but ever since donald trump took the stage, physically and metaphorically over the past few years, it is turn from conservatives and conservatism to trump world and trumpism. just this week, here at cpac in dallas, we have heard from officials sharing false and misleading information about the direction of the country. we are far from popular conservative figures, sharing false and misleading information about the 2020 election. it's through assault and we've also heard from so-called, medical experts sharing false and sometimes dangerous information about vaccines and the medical world.

here is a sampling of what we have heard onstage over the past few days. >> last week, we are with the militant left is now proposing is not simply wrong, it's evil. >> my name is ted cruz, my pronouns are kiss my body. >> what we are tired of as a political persecution. i would like to know when the democrats and the liars in the media and the people that canceled all of you and me on big tech, when will they pay all of us millions of dollars? >> the political nature of the justice department is frightening, that is something that if we get the majority, we need to look at. and a host of other issues. >> and it is not just the folks onstage, attendees here at cpac up and telling me that they believe that we have been croat pre-hell, another woman telling me that she was tearing up when i asked her about the direction of this country. katie? >> gary graham boxing better you than me having to deal with that, thank you gary for your reporting. rhea preceded.

the united states economy adding a shocking number of jobs in july. smashing economists projections after a lacking start to the year. 6.4 million jobs have been added to the country under the biden administration. compared to just 2 million under biden's predecessor. sectors are bouncing back, others are struggling. and bc jacob ward has more. not only was the job support a blockbuster blowing away economists expectations, and also seemed at least in the numbers to signal the end of the pandemic. we are now back to unplug mid-level and a number of jobs created that is basically the same as february 2020 the month before the pandemic began. and you can see and sector after sector of the parts of the industry that were basically destroyed by the pandemic are now coming back. you've seen leisure and hospitality leading the field with 96,000 new jobs. nursing has come back and health care in general.

professional services, even government jobs coming back. a very positive, overall picture and hopefully, a sign that the pandemic and it gets economic defense may be in the rearview mirror. now here is the subtlety that's important to understand however, not everybody is feeling this equally. here i am standing in the bay area, who have both big tech companies and finance companies, big banks praying for barr to other laypeople offered a slowdown hiring. talking about headwinds coming up. they are deathly word for the future, right now we're looking at almost 35,000 people have been laid off in the tech sector in 2022. we are just in the second quarter, according to crunch base. when you look across the bigger picture here, it's very positive. there was 1.8 jobs available for every american looking for one. but the higher paying jobs, the jobs they can put it through college in, those might be a bit harder to come by. we all have to just remember the pandemic, up and in the world. it moved money in ways that it is never been move before.

system. therefore you have to respect our decisions. it's all fake for what they are trying to do, it's propaganda purposes and pour brittani is in the crosshairs of this. it will be a tough negotiation, we saw the secretary of state plank in come out and publicly say, while the united states is engaging with. and offering to try to put pressure back on russia because russia is as we are seeing in ukraine, exorbitant and its demands. >> joel, one of the chances of russia saying that hey we want victor boot and let's just throw on a few more other russians as a part of that deal? does the united states say no, we are not going to do that, we will stick with the britney griner and paul willens and exchange for the victor boots? >> well if there's one thing that we have learned from russian about biden mapleton, in the recent months that he's always been asked for more and certainly, you will see it as an opportunity to keep an increasing the anti. that doesn't mean it will actually happen. victor buddha somebody that he wants back, somebody that

russia has been looking for for multiple years. buto over a decade in american prison. he is a celebrity at this stage because putin has made him one. there is a benefit to putin to getting victor boot back. and so right, now because the trial is over, it does give russia and putin at least some plausible argument and domestically. to say i cannot make a deal and so it's in a different phase of negotiations. certainly they will look for more and this is what they do. >> joel i want to quickly turn to china, clearly dominating the headlines of the last 24 hours. after nancy pelosi went to taiwan, china put a pause on a military and climate discussions with the united states. beijing has been increasing military drills around taiwan. this morning, taiwan reporting that the chills appear to be simulating an attack on its main island. how concerning is china's reaction and coming off military communication lines with the united states at this time? >> my goodness, what an

overreaction. -- you, know putin wanted to meet with president xi in beijing before he invaded ukraine. i was in the front but we did not respond by encircling russia and attacking its neighbors. it's ridiculous, it's in china's interest to get back to discussions on military security and climate negotiations. it likely will be china certainly trying to set some lines because nancy pelosi did the right thing by going to taiwan. she said we stand for democracy, we stand for our allies and countries in the region are nervous about. this exact situation and so by going there and pelosi make sure the allies in the region understand the united states has their back. you're not going to just look at these kinds of western threats and turn a blind eye. >> joel reuben we thank you for being here and giving the and said at the clarity at what is going on, we appreciate you. coming, up it's been called a political earthquake. how a victory for abortion

amendment that would've paved the way for an abortion ban there. there was record turnout at the polls, nearly 60% voted no with support from moderate republicans and independents. as kansas as a deeply conservative state, the result shocked the nation's. and caught republicans off-guard. now it seems republicans are realizing that telling women what to do with their bodies isn't as popular as they thought it would be. the new york times reporting, in swing states and even conservative quarters of the country, several republicans have shifted their top on abortion bans. newly-emphasizing support for exceptions. some have noticeably stopped discussing details at all. for more on all of this, i'm joined by heather air, camping quarter native for the american civil liberties union of kentucky, who is fighting a similar proposed constitutional amendment in her state. and kristen roe, the executive director and the ceo of moms rising. an advocacy group that supports abortion rights.

>> good morning ladies, thank you for being here. how their eye will start with, you your coalition is trying to achieve a repeat win of what kansas did but in kentucky. you have said you guys are using a very similar strategy. here's an example of an ad that was put out by an abortion rights group in kansas, let's take a quick listen. >> they called the constitutional amendment, the truth, it's a strict government mandate. designed to interfere with private medical decisions. a slippery slope that can put more of your individual and personal rights at risk. the ballot language is confusing, but one thing is clear. kansas doesn't want another government mandate. so on august 2nd, send a message. say no to more government control. vote no on changing the constitution. >> how, there is being framed as a government mandate can bring it to a mask mandate which we know rows that many conservatives and libertarians and not once or not add was the

word of abortion mentioned. do you think that strategy will translate work at kentucky? >> we are focused on here in kentucky is meeting voters where they are and we want to talk to voters all across the commonwealth to ensure that we are letting them know what's a no vote in november means on amendment to. we are working to ensure that they understand that if the constitutional amendment passed this in november, there will be no access to abortion. with no exceptions for rape, incest or life of the pregnant person. >> christiane, kansas that see record turnout as you mentioned, drawing photos from conservative corners and it off your midterm election. and as we also mentioned, republicans are already shifting their tune. should republicans be worried in other states like kentucky? >> republicans in any state, at any place should be worried when they are stripping the rights of people from their economy. luck, these decisions need to

be made with people's doctors, their faith and their families. and moms know it. there are over 80 million mom voters in the united states of america. they overwhelmingly support the access to abortion care. and in fact we can see not only in polls, and votes like places that we just saw, this tuesday in kansas. we can see also that six and ten people who need and have abortion care our moms. moms are not just worried about their own bodily autonomy, they're also worried about their children, having their rights restricted more than they were. this is a moment where people are standing, up speaking out, voting and organizing at every level of government because we know that it should be our body and our choice. >> had there, republicans are not asleep at the switch all of the time. they are aware of that successful strategy in kansas. to use messaging like in that ad that we just played, messaging that does not have any kind of party affiliation. what efforts have you've been seeing from the ground, in

kentucky that the gop is kind of been putting forth to count a program when you're trying to educate the voters on? >> so, hair in kentucky, we are nonpartisan organization and what we are seeing really is that this is a policy issue. in some people who are encouraging people to vote yes on the amendment, are really doing so from a more extreme point of view. they are saying that there should be no abortions at all in kentucky. we already know that here in kentucky, it's extremely hard to access abortions for a lot of people and so they are playing off of that and what we are really trying to emphasize is the importance of ensuring that people are able to make the best health care dishes and for themselves and loved ones. >> how they're, in order to get the information out though, are you guys just relying upon door to door messaging?

are you doing ads, what exactly are you deploying in kentucky to make sure people are truly educated and can make an intelligent thought about what the amendment means? yes so we are doing door knocking, we are doing text banking, phone banking and encouraging people to host their own house parties. get involved and communities because we know that getting the message across will be most effective when it comes from people who others already, know they already have a relationship with and so, we are also putting ads on the air. we are going to learn a lot from kansas as well. and so we are doing a whole approach when it comes to talking to people here in kentucky. >> kristen, the time i have left with the guys, i would be remiss and not talking about indiana. now the first state post roe being overturned to pass a law that is banning most abortions. that is despite the vote result in kansas. are republicans digging in their heels and waiting to see if they could survive electoral

backlash in november and in the future? >> republicans, most certainly one of electoral backlash in the future when they take away our rights to bodily autonomy. what we are seeing kapan in legislatures and trying to happen at the ballot box, people will not let stand. republicans need to have a giant wake up call, the polls are right, the overwhelming majority of people in the united states of america support the right to choose. and people will keep rising, as we'll keep speaking, we'll keep voting and will not let that law stand. moms are definitely, rising we are hearing about it every day. >> heather air, kristen roe, keep on fighting that good fight exactly where you are. we appreciate you being here this morning to let us know what's going on. >> thank you. >> a quick programming note, this weekend in the latest installment of velshi across america, velshi host live from tuscaloosa, alabama to take a closer look at post-roe alabama. he will speak with the panel of ella payments, affected by the

to great -- >> the drift goes on and on. conspiracy theories and alex jones begging for money earlier this week as he waited for a texas jury to decide how much he should pay in punitive damages to the parents of a six year old boy who was murdered in the sandy hook elementary school shooting. the jury is in and the verdict is 45 point $2 million. for years, jones rents of years of the show, and for worse that the massacre at sandy hook was a hoax. any claim that the 20 children and six adults killed in the attack were not actually dad. tones also falsely declared the victims parents were crisis actors, and part of an elaborate plan to push new gun control measures. the victims parents testifying that jaundice actions for islam to endure a decade of additional trauma after the loss of their son, has joined his followers harass them relentlessly. jones eventually conceded the attack was quote 100% real and that he was wrong to have lied

about it. while joins portrays his business as a media outlet, and reality it's his online story that uses his commentary to sell merchandise like vitamins and coins. the sale about stuff allegedly making jones a very rich man. his company worth upwards of 200 and $70 million. this by filing for bankruptcy earlier this year. for more on all of this, we are joined by msnbc legal analyst, glenn questioner. glenn, what do you make of this punitive damages award? do you think it is going to turn alex jones into something of a martyr? as we showed at the top of the segment, he's still broadcasting on the site, even saying the trial itself was quote staged. >> you know katy, as you say grifters were grift. this may make him look like a martyr to some of his gullible followers who are willing to stand him money. i have to hope it sends a message to other conspiracy theorist who have a platform and who can broadcast that this

hate and that these lies. a new body would profit off of the pain of sandy hook parents, it's no word to describe. just how despicable that is but you know? what alex jones will brag one day about how richie's and then talk one day about how broke he is. obviously now, he is trying to avoid having to pay out wet totals nearly 50 million in punitive and compensatory damages. i have a feeling he will not find that kind of loose change in his couch cushions. i also don't think he will make it easy for the sandy hook families to recover this serious monetary damages award for their pain and suffering. and anguish that was just handed down. i am sure alex jones will try to hide his money and fight them every step of the way because that seems to be who he is. >> you know when every case is

different and the facts are different from every case. one message to think is being sent to others because you mentioned it a few minutes ago. others who are spreading this information about say covid 19 or the 2020 election. i'm looking at those dominion lawsuits for example. against fox news. do you think there is a strong enough message that being sent from what is happening to alex jones in this particular trial? >> katie i think things are moving in the right direction. we all know that one trial court decision, for example the aggregate $50 million and $50 million in damages by which is handed down in this case, that isn't really a presidential value but i think it does happen i would call atmospheric value. the message gets sent. stop peddling in these hateful and damaging conspiracy theories. or you will be ready to pay, you will be polite out of business on your platform may

be taken away from you. i think that's a message that today needs to be sent loud and clear. because of what we are experiencing on the propaganda and disinformation. the conspiracy theories front that seems to have gained so much traction in recent years. i think the verdict will send an important message to the people who paddle these kind of lies. >> so glenn these are civil actions that are happening to alex jones willis hawk about the new attention that's coming from the january six committee for alex jones. after an attorney for the victims branch revealed in court, jones's attorney mistakenly sent him the entire content of election to cell phone from the last two years. a january six committee wants those tax and emails now because of this. take a listen. because of tpresident jump in ty morning hours today tweeted that he wants the american people to march on washington d.c. on january six, 2021.

he is now calling on we, the people to take action and to show our numbers. that time for games is over, the time for action is now. >> that video, december 2020 right? klein alex jones had a big role in whipping up public support -- what more might those text messages and emails reveal about jones's involvement and perhaps even donald trump's involvement? >> katie this fumble by jones's lawyer turning over a couple of years worth of his tax, actually maybe a boom for accountability and justice. think about this. as reckless as alex jones is in his public comments, on his podcast, how reckless might he have been in his text messages to his close associates like stewart rhodes? head of the oath keepers who appeared on his podcast several times and the oath keepers provided security for alex

jones. how recklessly do you think he communicated with people like stewart rhodes, who we know is indicted for a seditious conspiracy. in his private messages, i think it's fair to ask the question. why he have been communicating with others? in an out of government, how about mark meadows and we don't know but what we do know is that federal prosecutors got mark meadows cell phone records back in april. courtesy of the grand jury subpoena. i suspect the prosecutors will now be carefully looking at those records to see if stewart, the cfl extra himself phone numbers pop up on mark meadows cell phone records. hold on tight, this could really be a boom for justice. >> we know the committee is very busy this month of august. and that the hearings are to come, as of this will be adding perhaps, perhaps the elegance text messages of emails to be

and jaguars kick things off in the hall of fame game and that means for millions of nfl fans in the united states, the regular season is now just days away. but no matter who wins and loses, it seems that women will always be on the losing and where the nfl is concerned. cleveland browns quarterback, deshaun watson has been sued by two dozen women accusing him of sexual misconduct during massage appointments that he made while playing for the houston texans, two of them alleged sexual assault. watson is settling 23 of those lawsuits, the last one was dropped. watson has also denied the accusations and has never been charged with the crime this week the nfl's independent disciplinary officer issued her decision on the situation. so spending watson for just six games of the 17-game season. as soon as that decision was announced, there was an uproar for a harsher punishment. the nfl has appealed the six game suspension, and hopes of a longer suspension. what it was super cute through
