good evening, i'm mehdi hasan. we begin tonight in florida. land of endless sunshine, citrus fruit and senior living. welcome to the villages. the florida retirement community is so big it's the same size as the city of gainesville, florida, just off the interstate. also its biggest waco texas and the village is a big deal politically as well. it's a regular stop on the campaign trail for right-wing republicans. donald trump spoke to supporters there in the final stretch before election day. he signed an executive order on medicare there in 2019. while matt gates and marjorie taylor greene took their traveling gave a gifts act there in 2021. when ron desantis said he was stripping disney of his self governing power in the state when he sought to control higher education and when he briefed people on his coronavirus response in 2020, he did it all from, you guessed it, the villages. if something major and

5:48 pm
one of the were all true? why are the republicans upset with the tax police having guns? i thought they backed the blue? trump derides, gun carrying irs agents as if gun carrying is a bad thing. i thought it was the most american thing possible? i thought we were all supposed to carry guns. anyways, it is all nonsense and conspiracy. yes the irs is getting almost 80 billion in new money over the next decade from the inflation reduction act, but no we don't have a biden helmed dystopian police state ahead of us, and neither are the irs on track to become the new gestapo. here's some good old-fashioned debunking. let's deal with the armed agents hysteria. look our they're irs agents who carry guns? yes. what's the gop is trying to win or exaggerate, these are the guys who literally got a

component. today they can pose a small sliver of the workforce, with some 2000 agents, they represent less than 3003% of the irs employees. their goal is to take down modern-day occupants. just this week, i repeat just this week they put a whole network of cocaine traveler traffickers behind bars. you think republicans would be happy about that. apparently not. they don't want the irs stockpiling animal they say, which spoiler, is actually bs. yes the internal revenue has bought some $700,000 worth of ammunition this year. remember the cocaine traffickers they have to deal with? but this is not some new, unusual development that the trump administration spent that a same amount of money on the irs. so they are not uniquely stockpiling ammo and they're not 87,000 armed agents coming to get you. so wooded this much repeated and ominous 87,000 figure come from? seriously, it's become a

5:51 pm
the rest of them are i t personnel, backup staff, technical, rough janitors and the rest, not auditors, not enforcement agencies, not members of the criminal investigation division. many of these new employees will simply be making up for cuts to the irs workforce that took place over the last decade, taking the irs back to 2010 staffing levels. because following the 2010 teen party election way, republicans in congress got irs funding by more than 20% ice -- making it easier for rich tax papers to avoid paying taxes. so why do republicans hate the irs? why are they bent on demonizing irs employees right now? it's not because they are looking at for you. oh no. as one tax expert told time, the largest corporations in the united states with over 20 billion dollars of assets have had their rate of audits go down for nearly 100 percent to 50% over the last decade among wealthy individuals when a positive income of 1 million dollars or more, the rate fell

from 8.4 in 2010 to 2.4 in 2019. are you starting to see the big picture now? as propublica reports, over the last ten years as the irs resources have steadily disappear, so too has their inability to monitor the rich. in some recent years the likes of elon musk and jeff bezos paid very little, sometimes nothing in federal income tax. so let's be clear. these conspiracies about the irs on the right are really about republicans looking up for their donors. it's always been about the gop protecting the super wealthy. so when joe biden and congressional democrats announced the ire it would be fought the irs's capacity to audit the super wealthy, republicans had to act. they don't care if people get hurt in the process. has ron wyden warned this week, these are incendiary and
