right now on this labor day weekend, it appears president biden and democrats may be riding a guy surprisingly high ahead of midterms. while the opposition is sinking to new lows, both to blunt the joe-mentum and to defend the former president at the center of what some call an espionage investigation. and as this busy summer turns to election autumn, democrats have seized on possibly the largest political opening presented by republicans. the ripple effects of mar-a-lago investigation, and steal january 6th on the midterms. the president has both commander, in chief ahead of

november calling the maga stranglehold on the gop nothing less than an existential crisis for our nation. that is why civil rights leaders, including myself as the head of the national action network, traveled to washington yesterday to warn the president about the dangers white supremacy poses to the united states. so yes, i was happy that we had the meeting the day after the president made such a passionate speech about democracy. but we also felt the need to remind the white house that black americans have had a different experience of democracy than other americans. we urge the president to do more on voting rights, if democrats kept control of congress in november after the midterm elections. naturally, trump supporters are complaining this weekend about what they cast as a divisive

message from the president. but they are not refuting the content of his message. probably because the ongoing mar-a-lago investigation bears out more of the former presidents disregard for political norms. even when those norms literally uphold our national security. all of the latest from both the white house, and trump world, tonight on politicsnation. plus, the water crisis gripping the city of jackson, mississippi. residents and activists like myself calling on the administration to come back decades of disproportionate neglect that has left thousands of mostly black residents heading into a second week without clean water. that is coming right up. but first, joining me now is congresswoman madeleine dean. democrat of pennsylvania, and vice chair of the judiciary committee. congresswoman, first of all,
2:04 pm
thank you for being here. i must ask you your reaction to president biden's speech about the dangers to our democracy. specifically the part where he said that it is within our power, it is in our hands to stop the assault on american democracy. but is that the case? if for example, for a year, are democrats in congress failed to punish national voting rights legislation that would have overridden voter restrictions, and republican led states, is it really in our hands? >> well, what an honor to be with you this labor day weekend. i was there in philadelphia the evening of the speech with the president there, independence hall, that is my home city. i just thought the setting was absolutely valuable, important, central to the presidents message about protecting our democracy, making sure we

protect our right to vote. the presidents messages spot on. this is not just for elected officials to make sure we protect our democracy, it is on every single citizen to ensure we protect the right to vote. we protect women's rights, we protect our children's rights to the protection of our planet, to their education, and equal education for all. so you bet i thought what the president said, summoning every single one of us to be engaged, to vote, vote, vote as he said, right there where it all began in philadelphia. the message, i think is extraordinarily clear. it is on every single one of us. >> you know, according to an nbc poll, threats to democracy is now the top voter concern ahead of the midterm election. above even cost of living, and jobs, and the economy, and abortion rights. do you really think that
2:06 pm
democracy have become a motivating factor on the left, that can rally in space? >> you know what, reverend al i had a town hall, an in-person town hall about the exact same time that that poll was revealed. and to me, that was a relief that the american people are awake, and aware of the threats to our democracy. whether it is taking a look, very seriously, at what happened on january 6th, the lead up to it, and what happened after. and now, of course, the search, the unprecedented surge of a former presidents home revealing that he took with him thousands, and thousands of pages of documents that are not his own. hundreds of pages that are confidential. you saw today what was revealed that in addition to the top secret things that were found,
2:07 pm
42 folders marked confidential were empty. where are those documents? so, i am relieved, and i am glad you pointed that out. the american people are keenly aware that our democracy is the number one thing. if we cannot protect our democracy, climate change, voting rights, civil rights, women's rights, and all the rights aren't forgotten. we have to make sure we protect our democracy. >> you are the vice chair of the judiciary committee. i am sure you are following all of the developments in the trump related investigations. the mar-a-lago case, the january 6th committee, what is the point of all of these inquiries if we have the former president saying that he will look favorably on pardons for capital rioters if he runs and winds the white house? >> are you as shocked every time by what the president says? i know i should stop being shocked, but i can't help it. think of it the president who
2:08 pm
incited a riot upon our democracy, who has attempted to remain in power even though he previously lost, we have learned through -- that he actually wanted to go to the capitol along with the insurrectionists to be there with them. and just this week saying he would pardon, and offer a note of apology to those who have been convicted of attacking our capital, attacking capitol police, many of whom, hundreds of whom were wounded. many of whom died. this president i guess there is no lawyer that can help, or advise him. every single day he reveals that that is exactly what he wanted to happen. he wanted that level of criminality, that level of attack on our own country he sadly preyed on americans to go attack americans and our democracy. he reveals the truth every

4400 children. gun violence is now the leading cause of death for american children. can you imagine that? so you are right, i am on the bipartisan gun violence task force. i am proud that for the first time in nearly 30 years, we finally passed some measures to prevent gun violence, to save lives. but for nearly 30 years congress, and former presidents were not able to do anything. i will continue to fight. you know, we passed in the house an assault weapons ban, that of course went nowhere in the senate. but it is time we passed an assault weapons ban. those weapons of war that were used on our children and uvalde, or on seniors shopping in buffalo, and of course, many other places have no place in our society. we have got to do a whole lot more. >> thank you for being with us this holiday weekend,

congresswoman madeleine dean, joining me now is former obama white house press secretary robert gibbs. thank you for joining me today. mister gibbs, i want to start with president joe biden's primetime address this week where he warned that former president donald trump and his closest allies, and followers are actively undermining american democracy. now, you know that i know well, you worked in the white house during the contentious 2010 midterm elections when republicans took back the house during former president barack obama's first term. do you think this is effective messaging for president biden to appeal to americans voting base ahead of the midterm elections? >> absolutely i do think it is, reverend all. you mentioned it just a segment to go with your guest. democracy issues have become even more important right now as voters are thinking about
2:12 pm
who to support in this midterm election. maybe that wasn't something that we thought was altogether going to happen, but i think every time you see donald trump out there, campaigning for somebody who denies the election results of 2020, who thrust forward a nominee that wants to push the big lie, i have no doubt he has got a rally tonight in pennsylvania. he will recounted all over again. i think that is what it has done is take democrats, more importantly swing voters, and push this issue up their concern list. this is donald trump. i think joe biden is extraordinarily happy, the white house is extraordinarily happy to have donald trump on the stage of this midterm election. you know, reverend, that in 2010 we got -- president obama famously said a shocking, because it was a referendum on an economic recovery that was happening too slowly. we will get into why it was

happening to slowly, but it was happening too slowly. with joe biden, democrats the supreme court, and donald trump has all helped do is make this coming election a choice. competing visions. those competing visions were laid out in philadelphia just this week. you see it with donald trump, and i think that is a recipe for democrats to get excited, and for democrats to do well in november, despite the predictions of really only a few weeks ago. >> president biden's address comes as the fbi's search of a former president donald trump's mar-a-lago home found more than 40 empty folders with classified banners, without any clear knowledge of what happened to the information that had been inside those folders. according to the justice department court filing, which was unsealed by a judge on friday, the filing also revealed that investigators found over 10,000 u.s. government documents, and

about this, democrat or republican, you should be alarmed that anybody leads with a document, let alone a top secret document. all of your viewers have seen the famous photo of the iranian documents at mar-a-lago. if you look at the folders, you'll see something called top secret sci. sci is special compartmented information. it is a classification higher than top secret. just because you have top secret clearance, does not mean you get to see that information. that means what was at mar-a-lago was deeply dangerous not to be secured. this is absolutely a national security concern. it is why the former attorney general, who are rarely agree with, brightly states that it is shocking that this is happening, that the justice department, the archives and everybody have wanted that information back, and for some reason, donald trump both had
2:16 pm
these documents and would not give them back. i don't know why he had them. at some point, we will get to that question. the how is what we are focused on now. it is a deep national security concern. >> i want to ask you, robert, while i have you about big news this week out of jackson, mississippi. it was a major part of our discussion with president biden yesterday. derek johnson of the naacp lives in jackson. it's a city that is majority black and has been devastated by a water crisis that has rising floodwaters overwhelming the main water treatment facilities and brought it to the brink of collapse, leaving more than 150,000 residents without access to clean water. on tuesday, president joe biden approved a state of emergency declaration, ordering federal assistance to supplement the states response efforts.
2:17 pm
although mississippi officials said on thursday that they had no clear and date for this water crisis. jackson has a long-standing problems with its water system in the past due to under investment in the city infrastructure, dating as far back as the 1970s. how else do you think the white house can mitigate this water catastrophe. that not only has no end in sight but also shakes the confidence of black voters what confidence they have ended democrats in power? >> that's a great question, reverend. first and foremost, that story is remarkably set. that a capital city for the state of the united states of america does not have safe drinking water is something that should alarm and shock all americans. i do think it's a good thing that the president declared it
2:18 pm
a major disaster. that frees up federal aid to get some fresh water down there to people drinking in the short to medium term. i also think, i would like to see this white house, and i am sure they had meetings about this, reverend -- we just passed a huge infrastructure bill. we have a history in this country of under investing in places that are poor and are populated by minorities. we just celebrated an anniversary for the devastating impact of hurricane katrina, and what happened there. i would love to see, and i am sure the white house would love to see some of that infrastructure money going to investing in what has been on their invested in in so many minority communities. that is the critical infrastructure that allows people really to survive. you can't run a business. you can't raise a family in a place without safe drinking water. i think everyone would love to see the investment needed in
2:19 pm
jackson to come to jackson for that water system to rebuild, be rebuilt and for people to go about their lives with confidence that the drinking water does not have to be horrible. >> believe me, that was a large part of our 90 minutes with the president is the day, infrastructure, vital, and we have a disproportionate impact in the black communities and communities of color. you are right on the robert gibbs thank you for being with us. after the break is the jackson, mississippi water crisis led to gop attacks on democracy. first my colleague just delay in within a stop new stories. jessica? >> hey there, reverend al. here are the stories we are watching this hour. police in mississippi have identified the man accused of stealing a plane and then threatening to crash it into a walmart. police say corey when patterson stole the plane this morning, circled it in the air for hours before finally landing.

a lot of ground with that in the voters. nearly half casting ballots for former president trump in 2020. why are we seeing the shift among latino voters in florida? and can you speak to the differing viewpoints in the latino community that have been wrongly generalized by the democrat party? >> i think the issue here is the way we message our issues. a lot of times there is one issue that rings to latino voters and that is almost always immigration immigration immigration. that is important but my mom came here in the late 1960s. she has -- all undocumented folks in the country. however latinos also care about having a driving livable wage. they also care about clean environment living free of gun violence -- i think it is important that our party not pigeonhole

certain communities into specific issues. it's the same thing with the black community, the way a lot of the times, we are only spoken to about criminal justice reform, which is incredibly important, but black folks also care about having a good wage in living in a clean environment, as well. for me, it's taken this message that is really about love in the community. when you love somebody, you want them to have the resources they need -- meeting them at their table, not always invited them to ours. >> let me ask you this, maxwell. florida governor ron desantis has had a meteoric rise to national republican party prominence over the past two years with him eyeing the 2024 presidential race. you said the governor has scapegoated every vulnerable community, including black folk, the algae tp cute immunity and democrats.
2:49 pm
explain what you mean. >> we see it through his loss, right? what he is doing is targeting vulnerable communities. we look something at the stop woke, which makes it essentially illegal for teachers to teach about true history of the country, a country that although we are pushing to have a great country where everyone has the opportunity to serve, as scary things and it, but on the back of black folks, indigenous folks. it is important that history is taught in a lot of times. the best education does make you accountable. we see it through his anti-lgbtq plus policies. a lot of folks know as the don't say gay law or don't say lgbtq+ law. these are laws meant to stop the flame, people who are races, people who are homophobic, islamophobic antisemitic to really show them look, every problem you are experiencing, it does not have to do with inequities in our system, it has to do with gay folks, nestle with black folks, it has

to do with immigrants. that is what i mean when he scapegoats communities due to his failures. he is trying to make a stage because he is more interested in running for president then running the state. we need folks to step up and call it out for what it is. >> very glad to have you with us maxwell alejandro frost, thank you and good luck. just ahead, my final thoughts. guess who just turned 11? i will tell you in a moment. l you in a moment. my most important kitchen tool? my brain. so i choose neuriva plus. unlike some others,
