9:00 am
second good day to all of you. welcome to our special coverage, remembering the queen, ushering in king charles iii. i'm alex witt in new york. >> and i'm katie in london. it is unfolding in spectacular fashion, history, we are expecting at any moment to learn exactly when the funeral will take place. today, britons are observing a combination of pomp and circumstance to mark the proclamation of a new cane, and public mourning for a beloved queen who reigned for 70 years. thousands laying flowers and paying tribute outside of buckingham palace. back at home, of the british embassy in washington d.c.. >> she played a grandmother role to our lives. we can relate to them. the royal family was a human family. they had their conflicts.
9:01 am
they had their squabbles, the sibling squabbles. and yet we watched them whether tragedy after tragedy. i admired the queen so much for her resilience, for her fate, for her integrity, her grace. >> i am christian. christiane idiot today needs the grace of the queen -- that she had. that is how she lived her life. >> the british parliament is still meeting in a rare saturday session as elected officials pay tribute to the queen, after swearing allegiance to the newly declared king. prince edward and princess and we're seeing greeting well wishes at balmoral in scotland. lindsey joins us now. lindsey, this is a ten-day, a
9:02 am
highly choreographed period that has been in the planning now for decades. we're just getting some confirmation about what we will see and when we will see it in the coming days. we also just heard from the very news prince of wales-hyder. as i've just heard in my ear, lindsay, the funeral for queen elizabeth the second will be held a week from monday. >> that's right, katie, monday the 19th as you mentioned. these plans, this period of mourning has been in the works for decades. of course the royal family revisits them to make sure they're still in keeping with the queen and family would've wanted. speaking with the family, it's not the first full day of mourning, that was yesterday. today are off of work. the crowds are the manse. people are going through throngs of foot traffic just to be able to lay some flowers,
9:03 am
not directly on the power -- palace steps, but around trees. and you see here, right now, indifferent patches of grass. people saying it's very important to them to be able to show their respects. the queen, so beloved. many people feeling they did so much for them and their country. one note i read, said, thank you so much madam, we will miss you. in reference to that video -- with paddington, -- another note saying thank you for being the most versatile human and magnus of his queen. we know that the funeral on the 19th will be a big holiday, that was proclaimed by the king today. the king, from the ascension council, made the council -- we also heard from the king, let's listen to what he said. >> i take this opportunity to
9:04 am
confirm my willingness and intention to continue the tradition of surrendering -- surrendering the hereditary revenues, including the crown state to the government for the benefit of o in return for the sovereign grant which supports my duties as head of state and head of nation. and in carrying out the heavy task that has been laid upon me, and to which i now dedicate what remains to me of my life, i pray for the guidance and help of almighty god. >> again, renewing his veil of lifelong sovereignty, much like his mother did, committing himself and his life to the people here of the nation and the commonwealth. of course it will be a slew of changes. the queen is ubiquitous in this nation. as one can see with all the
9:05 am
billboards around honoring her. but as well as the money, in the mailboxes, this is ushering in a new era. people who have lived here have only known when monarch. of course, now king charles became the air at just the age of three when his mother descended to the throne. so, katie, well people are hopeful for the future, and believe that the king will lead them into that in stride, believing that they were well prepared by his mother, it is a period of economic and -- uncertainty here, and the period of mourning continues here. >> a lot has changed in a short period of time. the prince of wales, prince william, released a statement a short time ago. my grandmother famously said that grief was the price we pay for love. all of this evidence that we feel in the coming weeks will be a testament to the love we felt for our extraordinary queen. i will honor her memory by
9:06 am
supporting the king in every way i can. let's bring in this british historian. let's talk about what kind of king, king charles will be. there's a lot about -- a lot of talk about whether he'll be more outspoken. he has a lot of issues that he's outspoken about. climate change, architecture, being two of them. but he has said repeatedly that's not for him any longer. as the monarch, he said he will have to give up his issues -- lead them to the side. what will he be like as monarch? andrew, what do you expect? >> as he said, he has very strong views. but now he will keep them to his weekly tuesday audiences with the prime minister, which of course can be and private. we're not going to hear about them. he made it clear in his speech that he was hoping that his son, the prince of wales, would pick up some of his causes. i can see that happening,
9:07 am
especially as you mentioned, climate change and others on which prince william has been outspoken. but i think, the nest -- the next stage is going to scotland and ireland, and then after that i would expect the commonwealth to follow not before too long. and then he settles down for the often boring hard work of being the king of england. >> understand, lizzy, you have a few more details about the funeral which was just announced a few moments ago. it will take place on monday the 19th. >> this is information coming, and you have to forgive me that i'm reading from my phone. the queen's coffin will move to edinburg sunday, tomorrow. the queen will rest at the hollywood house, and the king and camilla will fly to a
9:08 am
number from london. this is multi days plan in, which has been in planning for decades. we now want tuesday, the content will travel to the edinburgh airport and fly to london. the king will return to london the same day. the coffin will be drawn by gun carriage to the palace of what -- westminster on monday. that's when the lying instate commences. this is the period that precedes the queen's funeral. then we have friday, the king will travel to wales. of course, katie, as we've been talking about, the state funeral on monday followed by a procession through london. a transfer them to windsor, and then the procession through windsor before the service at the chapel, katie. >> traveling from edinburgh to london in the coming days. i know that the lying in state, there were questions, andrew,
9:09 am
about whether they need to extend that period of time and push the funeral back, given the number of people that they expect to want to come here and pay personal tribute. >> people are going to be coming from all around the world. they've already started. you're going to see hundreds of thousands of people sneaking along. the lines will go all the way across the bridges, down to the city center of the old city of london. and they're going to walk past the coffin of the queen. they'll have to do it two or three or more a breadth, and they may have to do it swiftly. -- we're going to have to fit all of those people into relatively short period of time. >> andrew, once again, it's alex in new york. i want to ask you about where the queen will be entered. that will be in windsor, i understand it, and she will be
9:10 am
not only with her parents but also prince philip, the duke of edinburgh who proceeded her in death in april of last year. but he has to be moved, correct? to join her,? >> that's right, it's getting a bit crowded, under the chapel. there are all the kings and queens of england varied at windsor since your last king, king george the third. queen victoria lives buried outside the chapel. but pretty much all of them are in their. i think there's only space for two more who have course will be king charles, and queen camilla one day. but yes, it's a question of fitting them all in, frankly. >> andrew, we've talked about king charles now having to go around the commonwealth and travel and reintroduce himself. but what is there to truly
9:11 am
reintroduce? he's such a well-known figure. he's been preparing for 70 years since the age of three for this role. how do you think he will be seen and really approach now his constituents differently? >> well, of course, one difference is that he will in fact be king. he'll be taking camila who hasn't been to the entire commonwealth as his queen. there will be a slight addition to the story. of course the commonwealth, which is an entirely voluntary body of 54 countries, 15 of which he's the head of state. it's a growing institution. it's got 2.6 billion people. it covers one fifth of the world. all in all, it's going to be quite a task, really. >> andrew, thank you very much. and still to come, how the
9:12 am
queen's death could put an end to the rifts within the royal family. also coming up, the latest -- i'm sorry alex. i stepped on you >> all finish it up, but of course you're welcome anytime to join me in any way. also coming up for any -- all of you, who will be appointed special master in the trumps documents case. and we'll be continuing coverage on the uk remembering the queen. >> we are here to pay our respects to the queen. she's in heaven, even though i'm nine. most people around here, the quite sad. >> it's a sad time. s a sad time and i just didn't feel well. but then i found clearchoice. [ forde ] replacing marcia's teeth with dental implants at clearchoice was going to afford her that permanent solution. [ marcia ] clearchoice dental implants gave me the ability to take on the world.

9:20 am
somewhat surprisingly, and welcome to many, we are seeing harry and meghan with them as well. it was not known whether meghan would be traveling to the united kingdom, but she has arrived. so, we have katy, and andrew roberts joining us as well. katie, i will go to first. you and i both have been covering this dynamic for -- foursome which has been struggling to be designated and seen that way in recent months. this is really nice to see all of them there together, don't you think? >> you saw the brothers sticking to each other. this is going to be dissected by the world's press and the people here in the uk, to find out if there is anything to this rift that we've been talking about between the family and whether or not the death of their beloved grandmother will have helped heal this. yesterday when the king spoke to the nation for the first time as king he made a point of
9:21 am
mentioning that he loved harry and meghan. many saw that as an olive branch to the couple. i could be wrong on this. i do think the last time we saw the four of them together at windsor castle was for the funeral of their grandfather. before that, it was the wedding of harry and meghan, which i was here for. it was such a joyous moment. so much excitement in the air. so much optimism from the british public, only to be dashed so quickly. andrew -- when you're go ahead. >> i was just going to say, at one point you remember absolutely the wedding, it was a joyous occasion, i should remind viewers that meghan did not make it to prince philip's funeral because she was heavily pregnant at the time. little bit was on her way.
9:22 am
i think megan was, little bit was born in june. that was a mid april funeral. doctors wish she would've traveled. now go ahead. your question to andrew. >> now that you said it i'm so happy you corrected me and there is so much attention to the three of them as they spoke. and katie was the one between the governor -- the brothers which has grown wider. you can see them they're taking it all in. it created a lot of emotion on her face, as they took a close-up shot. we'll see if they address any of the crowds. this is an important image for the royal family. >> it's encouraging. it's heavily choreographed, of course. but the body language --
9:23 am
, nonetheless it's very encouraging to see them taking this opportunity for a possible ending of the rift. they also met, the brothers also met at the unveiling of their mother's statue, not long ago. nbc covered it. there, to, the body language was good. but a few days later, the whole thing collapsed. the key thing, of course, is going to be what harry says about his family in his forthcoming book. that could mend the rift or it could widen it to the point where it's unreachable. >> andrew, it's alex, when we talk about a rapprochement between the brothers, how important is it that we distinguish between the two of them becoming close again? certainly, as their father clearly wishes for. the mother would have abhorred
9:24 am
what happened to them. but it's really important that these two brothers manned defenses between them. but in terms of going forward, and royal representation by prince harry, he and meghan have clearly made their life to be somewhat as outsiders looking in. how much would you expect them to be part of the monarchy, and official activities going forward? even if they're not, does that mean something with a negative ten or two at, or is it just as it is? >> it's largely as it is. but they do have the capacity, hugely, to embarrass the royal family and to cause unhappy and unwelcome headlines. really, forevermore. that would be the thing that the palace will be hoping to put a stop to. if these photographs and video
9:25 am
is anything to go by and they do manage to end this rift, then that will be very good for the reputation of the house. >> andrew, just taking a look at the wide shot we had a moment ago, the overhead shot of the sheer number of flowers that have been placed at the gates. i know this is windsor, but it does look strikingly like all of the flowers that were placed at the gates at buckingham palace, i wonder, for william, and for harry, how this must feel. just the image of it. and what it must feel like for them. because the image is so strikingly similar to what they say after their mom died. >> this has not been done in royal funerals before. it was the death of princess diana that began these great seas of flowers in front of the palaces that we've seen. and what you also saw at the
9:26 am
late queen mother. it's an innovation, a search where. but it must have tremendous flashback potential for both of the princes considering how many flowers were laid out 25 years ago, when the tragedy took place. >> andrew and katie, we're going to bring in another voice to the conversation. julie montesquieu, levi countess -- the royal expert and a very american girl. i like to categorize my friend as that. julie, what are your thoughts as you're watching this. it's really something of a surprise. we weren't expecting to see harry and meghan coming out. nothing had been announced, certainly. >> absolutely extraordinary scenes that we're seeing here. this was of course well choreographed. put into place, but it's wonderful to see these two brothers together honoring
9:27 am
their late grandmother like this with both, of course, now the princess of whales, and the duchess of sussex. this is what the public wants to see. this will make a stronger monarchy if we can see these two brothers in some way reconcile. this is the hope. whether or not this is the beginning of it or if this is just choreographed, because it's the right thing to do, it's too soon to tell. hopefully, it's a start. wow, i think everybody across the globe is with eyes light open looking at this scene, hoping that the reconciliation might have started. >> you know, we just got word that it was the prince of wales, according to his team, that invited meghan and harry to this. a spokesperson for the prince william said they invited them to join them. the princess of whales, earlier,
9:28 am
i want to underscore what this means for the royal family, the image of the royal family during this transition, andrew. prince charles, now king charles, did not enjoy the same popularity as the queen did. well william and kate are pretty popular, harry and megan's popularity has gone down. the queen has always said the strength of the institution was the family itself. you need 2%, i'm paraphrasing obviously, you had to present unity. and this is an attempt to do that. >> that's right, a united front is something they've been very good at doing for a long time. of course, there were sometimes that it was impossible. the -- crisis was one moment. and the rift between the brothers was another. there were not standing -- these popularity's go up and
9:29 am
down quite a lot. the things -- certainly his wife, the queen consort has, she's very popular now, where she wasn't sometime ago. these things need to be seen in a wider context, rather than assume they're fighting a constant battle. >> what about the body image, the body language that we're seeing here? we're seeing a lot of touching between harry and meghan. he puts his arm around her a few times. she around his. obviously the prince and princess of whales, a little more reserved as they are in line for the throne, as prince william is in line for the throne. do you read into that at all, andrew? >> can you please ask somebody else? i'm not a body language kind of person. >> just my point is, when they
9:30 am
stood back from their royal duties, the constraints of royal life was not something that harry wanted any longer. they stepped back as royals and they started to redefine what their lives would be like. and i just feel like we're seeing this here with the touching between the two of them. it's striking to me. alex? >> you know, katie, i think it's interesting. we both observed these two couples from their courtship through their weddings and marriages. it seems to me, by observation, that harry and meghan are always holding hands. i think most every picture you see, they're very tactile. and maybe that is opposed to will and kate. there's a different formality, perhaps, that they hold. let's put it this way. we don't -- we never much saw the duke of
9:31 am
edinburgh and queen elizabeth holding hands. maybe there's something in a royal presentation, it's just my humble opinion, but i think harry and meghan have always had a very tactile display, always. but i'm being told, molly hunter is with us. and particularly because molly is outside windsor castle, emily, what are you observing? >> so guys, we came here with the expectation that the prince and princess of whales would come out and greet the thousands of people who are here at the long walk. but i want to see if i can get you any closer, when the new prince and princess of whales got out of the car, ten minutes ago, harry and meghan, as you saw also got out. let's put the camera over here as you can get a good glimpse. you can see harry over there, and the princess of whales. and the crowds are huge. there was an absolute gasp, a really big cheer when all four
9:32 am
out came together. then they split off into two different sides. they've been going down, slowly greeting all of the people who came with flowers to pay their respects to the queen. the expectation people thought there would be a royal visit. no one knew they would see all four. and particularly they would see the brothers together. excuse me? i'm live on msnbc. did you know that you would see the prince and princess of whales today? >> no we just came with flowers, and then we saw people waiting. we thought we were just -- >> lets you name? >> filip a. what was it like to see all four come out? >> i haven't had a great view, but a real surprise. i've moved up. it's hard to see. but my daughter got near. >> you're daughters right there? taking video? you guys, the crowds are huge, and it's gone from a somber almost moment of reverend
9:33 am
brings, to real excitement. that's cover here to see if we can get another view, if you guys can bear with me. i know it's very crowded. very crowded just on the side. did you get a glimpse? who did you see? >> i saw harry. is this your father? >> hello! >> we're on american television, did you know you were gonna get to see them? >> we just came to pay our respects, who we are. what was it like to see them? it was really cool. >> who did you see first? >> harry. >> harry first. >> what's your name? >> isabelle. >> i will do? you >> nine. >> who's your favorite of the four? you don't have to have to have to answer. >> thank you both so much. guys, it's so amazing how the
9:34 am
crowd has shifted. everyone came with flowers, lined up. they knew there was a visit. now suddenly, the crowd is giddy. everyone has their phones out. you see the prince and princess of whales on the other side, really talking, housing to have meaningful conversations. slowly. and you have harry and meghan appear. i think i heard you guys talking about, have been holding hands. i'm going to walk over. yes, i can hear you. >> so, a question here, we've been talking about the queen, having said there's strength in numbers in her family, i'm famously reminded of prince charles when he and princess diana went to australia on their first big overseas tour, when they took baby prince william and he joked about the crowds that loved so much to see diana, and it would it
9:35 am
would've been much more convenient for him had he seen -- that he had two lives, and could have locked down the center of the street directing traffic. because of the popularity. but what you're seeing here are these two popular princes, throughout their lives, and now actually taking each side of the street. it's almost as if the british people can be more enveloped and encompassed in this experience, getting to see will and kate, or harry and meghan. >> there is equal excitement for both, without a doubt. and every time one of the moves on, everyone gets excited. we've got prince william, the prince of wales, right in front of us. the crowds are so excited. everyone has their phones out. absolutely, you have equal excitement on both sides. i'm looking at these excited women over here. did you guys expect to see them? >> no idea.
9:36 am
>> you came to lay some flowers? >> you're smiling. is it exciting? >> it's quite unexpected to have this. it's amazing they came out today. >> and to see the brothers together, what is that like for you? >> hopefully it's good news. >> lasting? >> we hope so. they've been through a lot together. i think it's important to get back together. can you help me explain to an american audience how the mood shifted here? it was very somber when we arrived. and now everyone's excited! >> it's an ex -- it's a feeling of expectation, we thought, where can we lay the flowers, and they said, we're not sure, but if you hang around something might happen. that's how it built. >> so you hung around. thank you so much for your time. guys, it's completely changed, the atmosphere. you've got families. you have people who've been waiting out in the hot sun for
9:37 am
the last couple of hours. i'm going to walk you down a little bit more. i want to give you a view. i know you've been seeing agency pictures, but look how many people have come here. most people came very quietly, to lay flowers, to pay their respects. they had no expectations that this is what they would see. >> it is amazing, molly, amity people were seeing there. that's called the long walk, and it's got a long line of folks. >> we can see where harry and meghan are. the prince of wales is stopping, his leg behind the others. the stopping to have long conversations as he goes down with everyone who puts their hand out. he's having a very long conversation with a man. they're smiling, of course. this is a moment of mourning
9:38 am
for him. of course, he's lost his grandmother. but he smiling, he's taking his time to talk. he shaking hands right now. it's pretty extraordinary to see. they're going down, katie, as you said, this long walk. i can't estimate how many people are here. there's a lot of hands to shake before they get to the end. >> we'll see how far they get before they get through this. it's remarkable to see the time that they're spending with each individual. you can see, katie, they're putting the dogs. catherine, petting a dog's head. taking flowers from people. now getting a opportunity to directly hand those flowers to them. everyone likes a happy story, and this has been on the front page of tabloids day in and day out. so much coverage about what might or may not be happening behind the scenes. how william or harry might feel.
9:39 am
what someone said or did not say. what that woman a moment ago said, she hopes so. everyone wants a happy ending. >> julie? >> yes, sorry. i was looking at the screen. it's making me smile as an american, seeing this, there is such love, remember, for princess diana still to this day. especially over in the states. americans just want these two brothers to reconcile. we saw them at the platinum jubilee and over four-day -- days, we never saw the two couples together. not once, not talking. they were completely separate. that's when the conversation started coming up saying the rift is real. it's a big, it's going to take a long time to heal this. but here we are, just three months later, after the jubilee. you see the four of them
9:40 am
together. they're talking to each other. they are engaging with the crowds. king charles the third in his address to the nation yesterday mentioned meghan and harry, of course, in his address. when you're talking about the body language, for me, personally as an american, it doesn't surprise me. the body language, the holding of the hands, and the caressing of the back, between meghan and harry. she's american. we are very touchy-feely. that's just how it is. come over here, and live over here. it's not quite like that. so it's just wherever you live, and whatever your background is, that is what you -- what you're going to do. that's clearly what's happening between these two couples. i don't think there's more to observe about that apart from cultures. american culture, we are much more touchy-feely than over here in britain.
9:41 am
>> i'm glad you point that out, julie, because, a lot of people might say, oh, they might wonder if there's more of a distant relationship between william and kate, yet it's truly apparent that their best friends. they rely on each other. the three children, as harry and meghan embark on parenting their two children, as they grow from tyler to school age. i think you make an astute observation. being american, that we have an american as half of that couple. let me ask you about these sense of concern that has emanated from buckingham palace over the potential book that is being written by prince harry. it is something that there's been speculation -- it's been almost a cathartic thing for him to air those very conflicted and heartfelt tragic feelings that he's had since
9:42 am
the death of his mother, and that meghan has encouraged him to do so. it was through this process that he would get that. you know, as well as i do, that buckingham palace has been concerned over that book. what are the expectations? might this book now just fall by the wayside quietly? is there any chance of that? >> you know, i think anything is possible right now. what we're seeing right now is that we do know that the duchess of sussex has her podcast out and she has referred to the royal family in that podcast, of course, in not a good light. it'll be interesting to see after this if that stops on her podcast in the upcoming episodes. as far as prince harry -- of course there's nervousness around that. perhaps, it is done, it is a signed, sealed, delivered deal. that book is potentially

supposed to be coming out by the end of the year. it's not as if he can rewrite it or it can be reprinted. but there is the chance that perhaps, if it's too revealing, and it's going to hurt the royal family, there's the chance that it could be pulled. we don't know what's the queen last wishes where. we do know over the course of the past year, this was being prepared. we saw prince william at the time, and prince charles, now king charles iii, working together. engagements having much more for them, becoming more of a team. whether or not conversations are happening about the upcoming book, we won't know until it does or does not come out. >> he had a sizable advance -- he might have to give it back, anything is possible up until
9:44 am
the end, they're even re-writes -- who knows what those conversations he might be having with his publisher and his editor if he is having those conversations, that is still on if. it was, i believe, pushback. it was supposed to be coming out now. it may come out by the end of the year. but again, who knows. who knows what is in it? there have been a lot of allegations, a lot of interviews that have revealed some ugly stuff. ugly ways that harry and meghan say, that they were treated in the royal family. it's a tough thing to overcome. it's nice to see them together, though. andrew i want to ask you about the relationship between william and kate, and how it mirrors the relationship between queen elizabeth and prince philip. they were together such a long time. for longer than she was queen. >> they were, indeed. i think there's a natural attraction, almost an
9:45 am
electricity between them. they are tremendously popular in this country. kate and william. they've known each other since university. it's a true love. and you can see from these pictures, it really captures peoples hearts. if anyone doubts anything about the future of the royal family in this country, they really need to look at these pictures. people of all ages are coming together to be there, and greet the principles and princess of wales. and indeed harry and meghan, of course. it's really genuine, and emotional affection. it's something -- something -- sometimes you hear negative things about the house of windsor, but this video footage undermines that. >> you hear negativity
9:46 am
surrounding the relationship between prince william and the princess of whales, this new version at least, -- you never do. it's hard to be clean prince philip was the queens rock, help to get through it. it's hard to be married, anyone will tell you that. it has its moments. what is it going to mean for william once he does take the throne, whenever that may be? to have somebody like kate by his side? what will she be to him? >> she'll be his strength and stave, just like prince philip was for queen elizabeth the second. it's an essential part of royal life, really. we've had a couple of people who have been battling things. it never turns out very well. you need to have somebody who,
9:47 am
at the end of the day, you can turn to, you can talk to, you can trust with complete confidence. and who you know is going to be on your side. not out for themselves, in any way. being a royal consort is an incredibly difficult part. and both king charles the third, and prince william has those, thank god. >> they've been talking to this crowd for quite awhile, shaking hands. having conversations with a number of people. taking back a lot of bouquets of flowers. it is a long walk, quite literally. that's what it's called. it's filled with tens of thousands of people, by first glance. molly hunter still there in the crowd. emily, take us through it. >> katie, we're waiting -- we just met father and son?
9:48 am
>> no actually, good friend, and good friend. i just came in from new york. >> what did you guys see? >> harry and meghan. >> did you see prince william and kate as well? what was that like? >> it was interesting. >> what did you see, what were they doing? >> there is speaking to people. >> what's your name? >> ben. >> how old are you? >> 11. >> why did you come here? >> we came to this it, and we didn't know this was happening -- and to pay our respects. >> thanks guys, i appreciate it. you have a better view than i do. we're going to try to get in there. we're speaking to these women, those women who are speaking to prince harry. we were waiting at the back of the pack. you see megan inspecting -- accepting flowers. people are so excited. putting babies there.
9:49 am
getting their kids up close. excuse me? >> you're seeing a little bit of meghan through that camera phone. i'm going to try to take the idea that we're getting through this agency feed to see -- see if we can hear anything of the conversations that they're having with the crowd. [inaudible] yeah? [inaudible]
9:50 am
>> thank you so much! >> who's that? >> william! william! >> very nice to meet you! thank you. >> william! >> katie, i'll share with our viewers some details. you brought up the fact that it's called a long walk. in fact, it's over 2.6 miles long, that long walk.
9:51 am
notably it was created by name, by the predecessor of king charles iii. that is the state entrance to windsor castle, there. but andrea as, we're watching both sides with these thousands who gathered to wish controls well, and pay their respects to queen elizabeth, and now we have the bonus of seeing the prince and princess of whales, and the duke and duchess of sussex. i'm curious about the line of succession. we have prince william, first in line in terms of succession. his three children, george, charlotte, and louis. and then it goes to prince harry. but there was that tradition where for a while, certainly, a monarch would not travel with the next in line of succession for fear of something happening and literally taking out those that are next in line. if that still in effect?
9:52 am
do you know? >> well, it's broken quite recently. a few months ago, prince william went in a helicopter with -- and i have to say [inaudible] thankfully -- it's too great a risk for kate. you can't do that, because essentially, were something to go wrong, you would put the entire succession for two generations onto a different footing that it originally is. you won't see that that much. you will certainly see the -- sign together anytime at all. it's a very sensible thing. you just take a different helicopter. thereby say an awful lot of trouble should anything happen. >> of course, you wouldn't wish that at all to happen. katie, i'm just curious if
9:53 am
you're a better judge of distance than i am because i'm not good at that. i'm look at the long lines that are extending -- were watching them, i suspect it's a good hour at least, more, you see there's a partition there. people have come around the sides of that, if these four intend to create as many people as they can, we are going to be here for a while. >> if they make it to the whole crowd, you can imagine that people are still showing up now knowing that the four of them are there. we'll be here a while. there's at least, i'm not the greatest stretch, but there's at least a mile of people there. i would be surprised if they make it through the entire crowd. but, i mean, i don't know. it's a surprise for us, alex, we are not expecting to see this. we are given no indication that it would be the four of them. we had no clue whether we would see these four together at all in this next ten days.
9:54 am
the anticipation was that potentially the first time we would see william and harry together for a long period in public was when they were walking behind the coffin of their grandmother. certainly not that we would end up seeing this. you can tell from the faces in the crowd that it does mean so much. the faces does remind me a little bit -- i know we are in national mourning right now and people every sad about losing a beloved figurehead, the queen. the faces do remind me of what it was like at windsor when harry and meghan got married and the excitement people felt to see them and to celebrate this moment for them as a couple and the hopes that we're poured into what it would mean for the mood --
9:55 am
modernization of the royal family. what this would be, the fearsome foursome -- what they would do together. those who are very quickly dashed. it wasn't just what the fearsome foursome would do together, what -- our will and harry ever going to get along again? will the rift between them ever be bridged? i know what we're seeing right now, it is happening. i know everyone is hopeful about it. but it remains to be seen whether this is something that goes on longer than this. if this is really a rift healing. or if this is just a moment for the country to try to bring the country together and unify them under their father king charles. the queen is credited as saving the monarchy. it is prince -- king charles going to be
9:56 am
extending it long enough for william to take over. >> i think you make a really good point katie. i'm going to ask julie this. when you see these four together, how much do you, julie, think that this is going to help bring eight tenths of unity for all to their approach and their feelings for their monarchy? there are those, the republicans and alike -- but for those who have been divided for various reasons on the rift between william and harry, how much do you think, seeing, this brings a lot of hope and potential goodwill down the road? >> you can't help but hope when you see images like this. let's remember that the state funeral is on monday the 19th of september. today is the tenth that gives these two couples who are now based at windsor, the opportunity over the next ten days to have dinner together. to have conversations.
9:57 am
i can't imagine that they won't see each other for a meal of some sort or chat over the next ten days. that is a long period. it has been reported that the duke and duchess of sussex will be staying up until and beyond the funeral. we can hope that this is the beginning of some type of reconciliation as far as talking. it's all about communication. that hasn't happened between these two couples for a very long time. maybe these next ten days will allow this, sort of, carrying out and the communication, seeing each other face to face, rather than a podcast. or seeing a -- through an interview that's been aired. discussing what went wrong, how can we fix it? how can we bring unity together? that's what the queen stood for. >> i can't help but think the queen would be watching this
9:58 am
from wherever, potentially, and be very happy with what she is seeing. the beginning of a rapprochement between these four. that is something she wished for, and certainly to the point earlier, can charles having put out the olive branch, earlier, i know you read with all of that, katie. >> it's also so modern. a family in crisis. relationships going through ups and downs. we all go through this in our own families. we are seeing -- this it's familiar. for them getting together and talking about it. it might not be much precedent in royal history for that. but it would be a familiar to a lot of people. there is symbolism in this, and i'm not a windsor, but the clouds have parted, and there's a bright sign at buckingham palace. molly what's it like over there?
9:59 am
>> and molly -- molly's shot just went to black, i have incredible top timing don't tie, alex? >> live television! >> andrew, what is your expectation for what is coming up? we have molly again, we see some cars that are lined up next to harry and meghan and wonder if this means this lock about might be coming to a close soon? molly, you've made it to a railing, what do you see? i have forged my way through the crowds, made it through a railing. we do see those cars and these rulings actually only go down about halfway up the long walk. i do think the walk may be coming to a close for the rain comes down and i do want to say it's interesting talking to everybody here, they care so much about the two brothers and everybody here is hopeful that maybe but the fact of the four them came out together. they see the brothers together,
10:00 am
means a real healing. the one thing that yesterday heard from a lot of people as people were very sad, watching what's happening there in case they will get in the car. people were very sad to see harry traveling alone katie. there was a lot of sadness and yet people young and old, i spoke to people in harry had not traveled -- with his brother. or his uncles, and so i think that you could see the four that is too beautiful for the people there. the other thing i've been hearing from a lot of people, when we talk about what kind of king king charles iii will be, what might help him reach a younger audience and resonate the way that his mother did. everybody said it seeing the younger royalty. seeing more of the new prince and princess of whales. it acing their brothers together. these four are -- popular katie. they are so much more popular then came charles has ever been. and so i think this will do an unbelievable amount to kind
